Billy Yalowitz: Art & Trust in Treacherous Times

Given the differences in power, and definitions of success, how can arts and change collaborations between institutions of higher learning and their local communities be equitable and accountable? And how can change oriented artists practice effectively and ethically with a foot in each camp? Billy Yalowitz has had a career as a theater director and choreographer that I think provides provocative answers to both questions and more. This podcast features a rich conversation between Bill Cleveland and Billy Yalowitz, focusing on the intersection of community arts and social justice. At the heart of their discussion is the importance of facilitating equitable collaborations between artists and their communities, particularly in the context of higher education. Yalowitz shares insights from his diverse career as a theater director and choreographer, emphasizing the necessity of understanding one's own heritage and community narratives before engaging with others. The dialogue also explores the significance of storytelling as a means of empowerment and healing, particularly in marginalized communities. Ultimately, the episode highlights the transformative power of art in bridging divides and fostering mutual understanding across different cultural backgrounds.A key highlight of the episode is the Black Bottom Performance Project, where Yalowitz worked to amplify the voices of a community displaced by urban renewal. This project not only sought to reclaim lost stories but also fostered a sense of belonging among participants. Yalowitz emphasizes the importance of creating spaces for collective memory and narrative sharing, illustrating how art can bridge divides and facilitate healing. The project serves as a testament to the potential of community arts to address historical injustices and promote social cohesion, prompting listeners to consider the power of storytelling in their own lives. As the episode progresses, the discussion evolves into pressing contemporary issues, particularly climate justice and the disconnection from land that many communities experience. Yalowitz shares his ongoing work in the Hudson Valley, where he seeks to reconnect with his cultural roots while collaborating with indigenous peoples. This aspect of the conversation underscores the interconnectedness of social justice and environmental stewardship.Key Moments03:47 The Keys to the Kingdom: Billy's Building Project05:29 Exploring Identity and Community08:48 Golden's Bridge: A Cultural Sanctuary15:22 The Tradition of Community Arts21:40 The Legacy of Folk and Modern Dance26:05 The Black Bottom Performance Project27:23 Community Stories and Reparations32:15 Migrations and Hyphenations: An Israeli/Palestinian Sago36:25 The Birth Narrative and Twin, Twin Transfusion Syndrome41:54 Challenges and Breakthroughs in Rehearsal47:06 Land Amnesia and Climate Justice51:40 Reflections and InspirationsBIOBilly Yalowitz is a writer, director and community arts practitioner whose writings and interdisciplinary performance works draw from public history and chronicle grassroots movements for self-determination.Yalowitz's interdisciplinary performance works have been presented off-Broadway and internationally. The sounds of groups like the Moonglows, Heartbeats, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers had a great influence on brothers Charlie and Rich Ingui. With various street corner groups, they developed their vocal skills. While in high school, Charlie joined the vocal group from Queens, N.Y. the Dedications. When, a year later the group's lead singer decided to leave, brother Rich was recruited. While performing at clubs in the New York area, they found themselves at the mercy of various house bands and decided to find a group of musicians who would become permanent members of the group therefore creating a self contained unit. The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS.Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Enjoying great success in Philadelphia, they attracted the attention of record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Into the recording studio they went, emerging with " Expressway To Your Heart " a song that would climb to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart and #4 on it's Top 100 list. The success of " Expressway " became Gamble and Huff's first "crossover" hit when it began to be played on both black and white radio stations. It's success enabled Gamble and Huff to reach the large audiences they sought in order to bring their " Sound Of Philadelphia " to the mass Market. In polls taken by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia's City Paper, " Expressway" was voted the number one record ever to come out of Philadelphia. The Democrats have been camping out in Pittsburgh ahead of tonight's Presidential debate, and they paused briefly to visit Penzeys Spices. We're talking about how folks have responded to all the attention on PA, plus there are a bunch of new films and TV shows you can watch featuring the Steel City and its people right now. We're even counting Cam Heyward on “Hot Ones” and Michael Keaton on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” We always cite our sources: Steelers DT Cam Heyward took on “Hot Ones” and shared his favorite Pittsburghese.  During her stay in Pittsburgh, pro-Palestine protesters demonstrated outside of VP and presidential candidate Kamala Harris' hotel.  Harris visited Penzeys Spices in the Strip District. Penzeys owner, Bill Penzey, is staunchly anti-Trump, and there's even a section on the spice store's website dedicated to criticizing the Republican Party.  Watch the presidential debate on ABC News Live at 9 p.m. Eastern. Pittsburgh Film Office director Dawn Keezer is celebrating 30 years in the city.  Check out the new sound stages being built in Rankin, and our No. 13 ranking in Movie Maker Magazine's top places to live and work as a filmmaker.  Dawn Keezer's been on the podcast to talk about film tax credits, projects in Pittsburgh, and the film curse that we finally broke. Pittsburgh-born Micheal Keaton and super fan Seth Meyers talk about their “irrational confidence” as Pittsburgh sports fanatics. “The Pitt,” an upcoming medical drama is filming around Allegheny General this week, but the studio's getting sued by the estate of “ER” creator Michael Crichton. The lawsuit alleges that “The Pitt” is a reboot of “ER” made without permission. Prefer reminiscing about old TV shows instead of watching new ones? It's the Friday news roundup! We're looking at both national political conventions to see how Pennsylvanians talked about local issues and celebrating the golden anniversary of an iconic Pittsburgh landmark. Plus, Covid cases are on the rise, and Giant Eagle is dropping GetGo — but another bird is swooping in. We always cite our sources: Giant Eagle is dropping GetGo but the new owners, Couche-Tard, will keep the myPerks loyalty program. Covid cases are on the rise in Pgh and elsewhere, and the new vaccine isn't ready yet. The CDC tracks Covid levels in wastewater, and so does the state, which has a county by county dashboard.  Only about a quarter of Allegheny County residents got the last Covid vaccine. The stakes are especially high for Allegheny County because respiratory illnesses don't play well with poor air quality. A bunch of PA and Pgh folks spoke at their respective party conventions, including organizer Erin Koper and Senate candidate Dave McCormick at the RNC and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Gov. Josh Shapiro at the DNC. At the RNC, Koper talked about Pittsburgh police staffing levels, which are rising, and homicides, which have fallen since the year she cited on stage. Homicides rose in 2022 all over the nation. The Democratic roll call doubled as a dance party, featuring both “Motownphilly” and “Black and Yellow” for Pennsylvania. Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker, who welcomed VP candidate Tim Walz to talk to the Quips football team last week, gave the first remarks. Point State Park and our enormous fountain are celebrating their combined 50th birthdays. We talk about some of their most fun facts in this week's news quiz. City Paper has a great deep dive into its history, too. Nurses at West Penn Hospital authorized a labor strike this week, and striking workers at the Post-Gazette are nearing two years off the job. The PSO is on its European tour. They'll be back in Pittsburgh to open their new season in September. Besides baton diplomacy, there's a lot of other ways we foster connections with other countries. This Week I Flashback.......The Soul Survivors, originally from New York City, grew up listening to the R & B groups of the 1950's. "Expressway " was followed by two other chart records, "Explosion In My Soul" and " Mission Impossible". Their first album, released in 1968, was " When The Whistle Blows ". A second LP, on Atco Records, called "Take Another Look" appeared in 1969.During this time, the group toured extensively throughout the U.S. appearing with many different types of artists...everyone from Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Janis Joplin, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Sly and the Family Stone and countless others. In 1974, the Soul Survivors reunited with Gamble and Huff to record their self titled album "The Soul Survivors" on TSOP Records. It was written and performed in a style that would define the unique sound of The Soul Survivors. The album produced "City Of Brotherly Love" which would show up on Billboard's R&B Top 100 and become the group's fourth charted outing.Through the years, the Soul Survivors have continued to provide audiences with high energy performances and music that is timeless and authentic ,appearing with 60's contemporaries Felix Cavaliere's Rascals. the Turtles, the Association, as well as fellow TSOP artists Harold Melvin's Bluenotes,Billy Paul, the Intruders, Russell Thompkins' Stylistics and others. The group's CD is called " Heart Full of Soul ", produced by Grammy nominated producers Jimmy Bralower and Johnny Gale. The Soul Survivors recorded new music and covers several years ago, most recently working with David Uosikkinen of The Hooters and his project "In the Pocket" which is paying tribute to the vast catalog of music created in Philadelphia.© 2023 All Rights Reserved© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

It's the Friday news roundup! Residents are raising a stink about bad — and possibly dangerous — smells around the Shell cracker in Beaver County, iffy allergies aren't the only issues with our up-and-down Spring temperatures, and it's Arbor Day! Stick around for how to request a free tree from the city and which little neighborhoods have the fullest canopy cover. We love to cite our sources: Colin's latest reporting focuses on temperature inversions. Part 4 is available via City Paper. The Allegheny Front will have the next report. The state Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the Shell plant. The Beaver Co. City Cast Pittsburgh talked to Danielle Crumrine with Tree Pittsburgh about our city's tree canopy last spring. Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they're about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn't realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John's younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I've spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I'd see the Dugans in Northern Virginia.
