Booty breaks from Chicago's JAGGY is this week's featured mix for 5 Mag's RISE series. East coast transplant Jaggy's love for house music started at Smartbar during a memorable night at Queen in 2016. Since then Jaggy's gone on to play various venues and undergrounds in the city as well as jumpstarting Green Machine, a new and exciting party with a DIY ethos.
Bside Incoming: Alinka For our 186th show we take a trip over the Atlantic ocean to Chicago and warmly invite Alinka to showcase some of her favoruite club equipt house and tech records. "There are at least a few people in this thing determined to keep House Music weird. Chicago's Alinka is one of them." – Terry Matthew, 5 Magazine. Alinka is the kind of DJ other DJs will tell you about. She has a unique power on the decks that comes from lifelong passion and time served, with a focused devotion to her first love – house music. Raised on Chicago's vibrant house sound with toes dipped into Detroit techno, Europe's more robust approaches to bass music and the myriad of genres coming from cities like Berlin, London, and Paris. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Moving to Chicago in the late 80's, she fell head over heels for the chart sounds of Madonna and Janet Jackson. Then came house music from local radio shows where you could frequently hear tracks by Chicago legends like Cajmere and DJ Funk, and shows like Sonic Boom helped expose underground music to the masses. By the late ‘90s, music had taken over her life. Teenage Alinka immersed herself in the dance music scene, spending her summers pulling double shifts at a local pool and moonlighting for rave promoters to build up enough cash to buy decks. After a year of skipping class to relentlessly practice her mixing skills, she began her full-time musical pursuit. Working for various club promoters, doing odd jobs passing out flyers and helping with party logistics - anything just to get into clubs underage to see her favorite DJs - all while spending hours digging for tracks at Chicago's legendary record shop Gramaphone. In 2001, Justin Long recruited her to be the opening resident for his Dotbleep party at Smartbar where she honed her skills for the best part of a decade. In 2012, an impromptu meeting with former Hercules and Love Affair vocalist, Shaun J. Wright, changed her life forever. Their evolving friendship resulted in what would be the first of many musical collaborations. The pair launched their Twirl parties and label, continually striving to inspire each other both musically and spiritually; the result has been an impressive catalog of material for both of them collaboratively and individually on the likes of The Classic Music Company, Jackathon Jams, Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom, and of course Twirl, where as well as their own material the duo have welcomed renowned artists like Spencer Parker, Virginia, LA-4A, Kim Ann Foxman, and Jason Kendig onto the label. Recent years have seen Alinka really hit her stride as a producer with successful releases on world-renowned labels like Rekids, Crosstown Rebels, Need Want, Permanent Vacation, Harry Romero's Bambossa Records, He.She.They, and Peggy Gou's Gudu Records, which is forthcoming in 2024. She also turned out a standout collection of remixes for labels Me Me Me, Live At Robert Johnson, Lone Romantic, Keinemusik, Get Physical, and Pets Recordings. Now living in Berlin, Alinka has well and truly found her feet and inspiration. Alinka has used this base to throw down at parties across Europe from Berghain/Panorama Bar to Circoloco, with regular visits back to the US and Kyiv to play at stand out bars. Her evolution continues with the recent relaunch of her Twirl imprint, highlighted by the ‘Day Dreamer', ‘Sorry For Not Trending' and ‘Edgewater' EPs that finely balance Alinka's future-focused ethos, with an unmistakable, proud passion for her Chicago heritage. Check out just released Edgewater EP here! - https://alinka.lnk.to/TWIRL032 Enjoy the ride. Ariel is a Chicago-based producer and DJ and made her official Pitchfork debut at this year's festival. They discuss the ensemble nature of her 2022 album, Cyclorama, what inspired her to become a DJ and her ascension to resident DJ at Smartbar, and planning her Pitchfork live show, complete with dancers and costume design. Hallo Freunde für meine KK Presents Mix Reihe habe ich diesmal ParkAlemão aus Chicago, USA eingeladen einen Mix zu machen. freut euch auf sehr cooles Set von ParkAlemão Enjoy It Kurt Kjergaard Hello friends this time I invited ParkAlemão from Chicago, USA to do a mix for my KK Presents Mix series. Look forward to a very cool set by ParkAlemão Enjoy It Kurt Kjergaard BIO Park started his journey into electronic music in the world of Trance. Mixes such as the Politics Of Dancing released in 2001 by the great Paul van Dyk left an indelible mark on him. Though a native of Chicago, Parker moved to France in 2009 and soon was introduced to the world of House Music, specifically Deep House. He loved discovering a whole new style of electronic music and a new set of extremely talented DJs. The French people were extremely kind and mentored him in how to properly beat-match and craft sets both on CDJs and vinyl. He mixed live at a few local bars and was instantly hooked. Upon his return to the states, he discovered the roots of House Music in his hometown of Chicago frequenting legendary clubs such as the late Vision, Spybar, Sound bar, and Smartbar. He then discovered a DJ that would change his life, the mighty Guy J. This is when he started his journey in the world of Progressive House music. The rest is history! Parker enjoys djing locally and plans to release his first production this year! He also releases at least one two-hour set a month and enjoys mixing live on Twitch. Follow his social networks below to check out his latest content. He also added a Ferris Bueller's Day Off theme to this one! Legendary film...Enjoy! Since I was unable to travel to the US this weekend due to a spectacularly badly timed positive Covid test, I got on the decks in my bedroom and hit record. Nowhere near as fun as the shows I missed at Flash in DC, Good Room in NYC, and Smart Bar in Chicago, but if you were planning to hit any of those then stick this on for a taste of what I was gonna play. Hope u enjoy the mix. On the eve of a certain very invasive medical procedure for Scott (see episode 54), the guys try to get a little invasive with Metro owner Joe Shanahan. A task that proves to be near impossible, as Joe —writhing and squirming like a goldfish— deflects questions at every turn and attempts to transform the interview into something resembling an episode of “This Is Your Life” for Scott. Crafty. But that's okay — the few times we were able to pin Mr. Shanahan down, we got him to talk about running the best music venue in the world, hanging out at the Hacienda, booking R.E.M., the days (or nights) when Smart Bar was on the 4th floor, helping Dave Grohl get a new drum set, pipelines to Minnesota, the best pizza in Chicago, smoking pot with the Clash, and why love means never having to say “I told you so”. In this special bonus episode of Changes, Annie talks about nightclubs with The Blessed Madonna - their history, their cultural significance and their tenuous future after Covid restrictions ravaged the industry in the last two years. Through statistics, lived experience and passion for what night-clubs can do to and for a person, Marea and Annie explore exactly why clubs matter. We couldn't think of a better person to speak with than Marea; with years of DJing experience at some of the most treasured nightclubs in the world, from Smart Bar in Chicago to Berghain in Berlin. And fittingly, the voice of Fred again..'s ‘We've Lost Dancing' song that documented the sadness, confusion and optimism of the events of last year. In 2021, as countries began to ease COVID-19 restrictions, iconic venues all over the globe reopened their doors to welcome back DJs and dancers. Although there were joyous moments throughout the summer and Autumn, the year of reopening did not mark the “roaring 20s'' we all predicted. While technically open for business, many dance music venues are facing pandemic-related debts that threaten to close their doors for good. A few have been passed over for crucial reopening grants, and others were affected by another round of lockdowns. In 2022, dance music scenes and venues all over the globe are fighting for survival. Join Annie and The Blessed Madonna to hear their unique perspective, as they share their thoughts and stories. In the world of digital marketing, traffic gets a lot of attention. Small business owners understand that without visitors to your site, it's unlikely you're going to be able to grow or sustain their businesses. I'd argue that the focus on traffic isn't helpful unless it's paired with a focus on conversion. After all, you might be able to attract thousands of visitors a month – but if none of those people are buying from you, what's the point? You're paying for traffic without getting any real return on your investment. With that in mind, here are some of the most useful tools I know to help you boost your conversion rate and turn your traffic into revenue. Content Research Tools A high conversion rate starts with great content. If you're not sure what content gets the most traction, then these tools can help you find out. BuzzSumo – BuzzSumo is one of the best tools I know for figuring out what kind of content to post. You can entire a keyword and get a display with links to the most linked and shared content related to your search term. You can then dig in to explore what makes the content shareable. You can get a free trial. After that, the plans start at $99 per month. That might seem like a lot, but there's no minimum subscription period. Similar Web – Which sites are most like yours – and where is their traffic coming from? If you want to know the answers to both questions, you should try Similar Web. Similar Web will tell you which of your keywords is generating the most traffic and give you ideas about where to post and share your content online to increase conversions. They offer a free plan and a paid plan, which is based on volume. You can contact them for pricing. Land-Book – One of the keys to a high conversion rate is a great landing page – but how do you know if your landing page is getting the job done? I recommend Land-Book.Land-Book is a free collection of some of the web's most successful and effective landing pages. It's a great resource if you're not sure where to start with your landing page. Really Good Emails – Do you want to improve the conversion rate of your emails? Really Good Emails does for marketing emails what Land-Book does for landing pages. Browse their huge, free collection of effective marketing emails and use them for inspiration. This is an especially helpful resource if you're new to writing emails and want to up your game. Tools to Capture Leads The next category is a series of tools that will help you capture leads once you've enticed a visitor to your website. HubSpot is a free lead-capturing tool. Its primary feature is an exit intent popup, which is proven to be one of the best-known ways to capture leads. What I really like about HubSpot is that it combines lead capturing with detailed metrics to help you understand the user experience on your website –which can, in turn, help you to increase conversions. Sumo is a suite of tools that you can use to create action-triggered popups that include a Welcome Mat popup, a scroll-triggered popup, and a Smart Bar to help you attract more email subscribers.Their free version is probably enough for most small businesses, but if you want even more analytical tools, you should consider their premium option, which comes in at $49 per month. HelloBar is another tool you can use to capture leads. They have a free plan with limited options that you can use to display a popup opt-in form to every 10th visitor on your site.Their paid plans range from $29 to $49 per month and offer an array of additional features that can help you transform your website into a lead-generating machine. Heat Mapping & Mouse Tracking Tools A visitor's behavior on your site can provide a lot of information about why your conversion rate isn't as high as you want it to be. Here are some tools that can give you the data you need. Clicky offers free and paid plans that will give you detailed information about how long visitors stay on your si...

TYREL WILLIAMS (Immortal Sin, Secret Studio / SF) Tyrel (@tyrelwilliams) was a mainstay of Chicago’s underground scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records, where he spent many years building his collection of vinyl. He spent 2007-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which was an all vinyl dance party in Chicago. In 2009 he took a job working with Jeff Mills and helping with Axis Records. Tyrel moved to San Francisco in 2011 where he is now a resident DJ for Housepitality, Acid Test, and Fleurs Du Mal. In 2014 he started a project with Bryan Bai-ee called Secret Studio with releases on their own label, Secret Studio Records. His next venture is his new vinyl label with C.L.A.W.S. called Immortal Sin, with the two releases featuring I.B.M. on the first record and Bill Converse on the second. This mix was recorded for Housepitalty back in May 2020. Tyrel was feeling his old deep house collection, so he wanted to tap into that and play some of his favorite deep house records. STEVE REIDELL is a typography enthusiast and a Chicago musician: he is one-half of DJ/production duo The Hood Internet, and one-half of the band Air Credits alongside fellow Chicagoan ShowYouSuck. He formerly worked as the in-house art director at Metro and Smart Bar. The First Time is CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series. It pairs a reader’s personal story about a specific "first time" -- a different "first" for each show -- with a song performance. This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by The First Time Four. The band takes special care to perform unexpected song arrangements, so it is hard to tell which the audience enjoys more: the story or the song. The First Time is produced and directed by Julie Mueller with Assistant Producer Bobby Evers and Host Jenn Sodini. Podcast produced and recorded by Jenn Rourke. Engineering by Tony Baker. Ariel Zetina is a Chicago-based DJ, producer, and playwright. She is a resident at the legendary Smartbar and runs many of her own club nights in the city. Ariel has released music on Boukan Records (including underground club hit “Addy:” feat. London Jade), Club Chai, Sweat Equity, and Knightwerk, with a 2019 EP forthcoming on Maija.I wanted to talk to Ariel because she’s doing great things in Chicago, bringing both people and different kinds of music together. I went to one of her parties at the Hideout and had an amazing time, the music and the vibe were great and it was clear that both were very connected to who she is. And then she put out tracks like “Oil Rig” and “Chino” and I became a fan of her music. Also, I was very curious to ask about her work as a playwright.Digital Warmth is presented by Tone Madison. Chrissy is a true veteran of the dance music scene, with a career that spans decades, genres and continents. Hailing from deep in the American mid-west, he came up through the rave scene, first gaining international recognition via his Murderbot moniker pushing his own take on Jungle but, over the years he has never stood still. After moving to Chicago 10 years ago he's continued on his journey of hard work and constant self-renewal, ending up as a resident at the legendary Smart Bar, and running the excellent Night Owl Diner imprint alongside Alex Burkat. I caught up with Chrissy as he passed through London on a recent tour and we had a long, and in-depth chat about the journey that's brought him to where he is today. Instantly warm, funny and with deep knowledge of music, this was one of my favourite conversations to date and my mind was slightly blown to discover that Kansas City isn't actually in Kansas. The Smart Bar resident isn't afraid to name and shame. // As product of the Midwest rave scene, Chrissy has seen his share of sketchiness—from gunplay in Kansas City to troubles on the road in England with DJ Rashad. He admits that the underground environment through much of dance music's history can be a beacon for bad players eager to take advantage of the PLUR. "They were homophobic, and they were misogynistic and they didn't really like the music. They were show up to score ecstasy, or meth, realistically," he says of the crowd the came to many a Midwest party in the 90s. He goes on to rally against the outlaw elements that encourages bad business deals and dangerous venues. The latter of which, sadly took lives in Oakland, including producer Nackt, whose posthumous release just dropped on Chrissy's Nite Owl Diner label. Chrissy recalls his friend and shines a light on raving's corrupt underbelly on this episode of the Rave Curious Podcast.
Legendary Chicago radio DJ Johnny Mars (WXRT) jumps in the car for a (gasp) vegetarian meal at Amitabul (6207 N Milwaukee Ave). We cover a lot of things, including: *Amitabul provides no napkins with carry-out ("that's what pants are for") *Johnny's move to veganism after hard living in the 80s *My move away from vegetarianism after hearing the steak sizzle at Ruth's Chris *XRT in the 80s ("There was a lot of pot smoking. There was a lot of cocaine, as well.") *The club scene of the 80s (Tut's, Smart Bar, 950... ) *Johnny's radio history, from the Loop to Texas to WXRT *My stripper name *Amitabul's food: Sure, there's no meat, but it's awfully tasty... *The car accident that caused me to use a rental car for this particular recording *Johnny being on the air the night John Lennon was killed *The situation at XRT when Johnny was fired and I awkwardly had to replace him *Johnny's all-time favorite album *The "good old days" of record store shopping Johnny Mars is a Chicago treasure. A GODDAMNED CHICAGO TREASURE, I tell you.

Having previously held down a residency at Smart Bar in Chicago for some seven odd years, she now finds herself in Berlin where she has featured on the Panorama Bar line up. Alongside her friend, Shaun J. Wright she has released a vast string of purpose built, club ready tracks. Her tastes range from oddball house, acid, techno, and she tends to rely heavily on weird and wonderfuly bass driven music. Most recently she has released music on Crosstown Rebels and her own founded imprint Twirl Recordings.
We're excited to welcome back AYLI friend Jason Garden AKA Olin from Chicago for his second AYLI appearance. Olin first debuted alongside his Argot brethren The Black Madonna and Steve Mizek last year. We're honored and excited to welcome him back Friday to play alongside Kassem Mosse (live) at F-8.
DJ Nobu has long been Japan's best kept secret, but lately it feels like the cat is well out of the bag as his global touring schedule fills up for 2016. Nobu has been producing the legendary Future Terror parties in Japan since 2001 and launched his Bitta label in 2012. More than anything though, he is known for his completely unpredictable yet always mind-melting DJ sets. We were totally floored by both his prime-time set at The Bunker in Tokyo and his opening set at The Bunker in Osaka in September, 2015. He will be playing the closing set of The Bunker NY takeover of Berghain in February, making his North American debut at The Bunker in Brooklyn in March, in addition to playing alongside The Bunker resident Eric Cloutier at Smart Bar in Chicago. Few DJs demonstrate the depth of vision that seems to come naturally to Nobu.

May 2014 introduces Jeff Craven to the Tahanan family. Very few people can make a claim to success like Jeff Craven. As DJ and Label Owner, he has left an indelible mark on the world of Dance Music. His format and business model for the great Large Music has been copied many times over, a fact that Jeff wryly considers to be "the highest form of flattery." Jeff Craven began spinning records in the summer of 1988 while a student in St. Louis Missouri. His format then was always eclectic, playing alternative records from bands like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb with the occasional House record thrown into the mix. Jeff's love of Chicago House eventually took over, however, and he moved to Chicago in 1990. While making the rounds as a DJ in Chicago clubs during the early 90’s, Jeff found that many Chicago House music artists were struggling to have their music heard. Jeff started his own record label, Large, to feature this fresh crop of Chicago talent. With an artist roster including such luminaries as DJ Sneak, Roy Davis Jr., and DJ Rasoul, Large Music soon became the most prominent and influential House music label in the universe. Large Music’s shining rise to commercial success came in the fall of 1998 when Roy Davis Jr.’s hit single “Gabriel” hit the UK Pop Top 20. A slew of hits followed after that from Kerri Chandler, Miguel Migs, and newcomer Dennis Ferrer. Throughout this period, Jeff maintained a street level credibility with Large, releasing classic records that continued to push the underground sensibility of House Music. As a DJ, Jeff has played all over the world including Germany, Canada, France, England and Sweden. He was the opening DJ for jazz legend Herbie Hancock in Stockholm, and has played alongside Blue Note recording artist St. Germain at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. He has also appeared in almost every major club in Chicago including Smart Bar, Red Dog, Zentra, Spy Bar, Big Wig and Lava Lounge. Jeff has appeared on numerous radio programs including London’s infamous Kiss FM, Radio FG in Paris, and Chicago’s very own Q101. His DJ style has been described as “soulful” and “jazzy” with a slight influence of techno. Tracklist 1. Nacho Marco- Middays- Madhouse Promo 2. Few DJs in San Francisco have the range that San Francisco's Solar Langevin can claim. Having perfected the opening, closing and headlining set, with over 19 years of DJing experience, at Pacific Sound's Sunset parties. You can catch him on the decks most weekends, sometimes as many as three times in one night, in dark basements, large clubs and outside at park parties. We're proud to welcome him back for a special opening set for DJ Koze, Nov. 12, 2011 at the Beatbox, San Francisco, CA. - http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?295494 - This rare recording of Solar is from the acclaimed Acid Test (all vinyl) parties at the Smart Bar in Chicago.
Graced with a 3hr opening DJ slot for the live Chicago debut of one of my favorite producers in Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, this set starts with a deep groove and gets weird, deep, techy, wonky, and traverses a range of tempos from 110-128 bpms, ending with a kiss of favorites... this was a super fun night after a great Summer of wonderful opportunities. Duke Shin & Nate Manic LIVE @ Resonate v.6 Mar 19 2011 (1:32:53)The 6th edition of Resonate sold out the entirety of Metro/Smart Bar, bringing the burner vibe to Chicago's most venerable live music venue and subterranean club. For the 4th year in a row, myself and Nate Manic brought the unpredictable spectacle that is a Bad Advice Bear tag team set, but this time closing out the Freakeasy-enhanced Smart Bar. Colorful jellyfish installations hung from the ceiling around the dance floor. The lounge area was completely decked out as an interactive environment perfect for hardcore lounging (and dare I say cuddle puddles?). Framed, illuminated hologram pictures of Indian deities hung from the back wall behind the booth in front of the usual BZA-designed mural. And the crowd? Lordy, lordy, lordy. Following the blistering bass rumbling of Radiohiro and MC Zulu, from 3:30-5am, in front of a packed house, this is the result... Enjoy!DUKE01.
