On this episode, the era of excitement for the new official Mormon home in Nauvoo gets to the leadership’s collective head. Wreck-it Bennett gets up on the stand during his mayoral inauguration and sets out a number of decrees Nauvoo would need to fulfill if it’s to last into the coming decade. The Nauvoo government establishes a small number of committees and passes ordinances to set out the letter of the theocratic law. Nauvoo would be a temperate society, but effectively fostered an underground market for liquor, just like the U.S. government in the following century, but Jo and Bennett had their fingers on the knobs for who could buy and sell liquor within the city limits. This episode is all about organization by a group which had suffered from lack thereof for over a decade up to this point. After that we’re joined by Jack Naneek of the Mormon Awakenings podcast to discuss just what it means to be a member of the church and seek validation from our Mormon community. Welcome to another episode of The Podunk Polymath Podcast. In the pre-ramble, I read a new iTunes review, which was written by Charone Frankel, host of a funny podcast called Habeas Humor, in which she talks about news stories about court and crime and gives it a funny twist. I then talk about Secular Saturday, which is a convention coming in July to Chattanooga, and yours truly will be on another podcaster panel! On the palaver, I talk to the hosts of The Ginger Snaps Podcast, Amy and Nadya. We talk about their podcast, what topics they have covered, the intersection of trans rights and social justice, and many other topics. Oh, and there is much laugher and bad jokes as well. Our conversation was very loose and jovial, and I really enjoyed talking to them. They are above all kind and funny, and those are qualities that endear me to them, and I think y'all will agree. In the post-ramble, I tell y'all I was on The Imaginary Friends Show, which I talk about here because I forgot to mention it on the pre-ramble. Damn bad memory! I hope y'all enjoy the show! Thanks for joining me for another installment of The Podunk Polymath Podcast! This week on the pre-ramble, I talk about positive things, because we have enough negative news to go around. First, I tell about new likes and read new iTunes reviews. I then mention that I was Country Fried Freethought, as well as my impending appearance on the Imaginary Friends Show. Finally, I talk about Macron's victory over the far-right nationalist and Putin ally Marine Le Pen in a landslide. So, at least for now, the march of toxic nationalism in Europe has been halted. On the palaver I speak to former minister Joshua Richards. We talk about his journey from faith into atheism. He is a very charismatic speaker, and his story is one of struggle and pain, but ultimately results in revelation and freedom. Joshua's story is an inspiration to anyone who has taken the often difficult path out of religion. His message : it does get better. Music by Dot Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash
In this week’s episode, special guest masochist Nick Morgan-Moore joins us to break down Brother White, a movie that falls somewhere in the racism spectrum between War Room and Mein Kampf. If you can’t get enough of Nick’s sexy Australian accent, you can also hear him on The Imaginary Friends Show and The Atheist Apocalypse. You can also follow him on Twitter, or subscribe to his YouTube Channel. And if you’d like to hear more from our maestro, Ryan Slotnick, you can check out Evil Giraffes on Mars.
