Matilda Reyes writes urban fantasy, paranormal, and supernatural adventures. Recent works include The Daughters of Night Chronicles which follows the seven illegitimate daughters of the Lord of Night. This week she is my guest. We discussed her decision that it was more important to write and share her self-publishing journey. She also shared how her work as a grant writer informed her ability to tell engaging stories and how she transformed those skills as a sci-fi author. You are going to love this conversation, especially if you are into sci-fi adventures. Matilda’s series The Vespers Chronicles follows the adventures of Jasper Andrews and her initiation into a paranormal world of beings called The Order of Vespers. She was born and raised in New York City. Later, she relocated to the West Coast. She spent an eight-year stint in Los Angeles. Fast-forward to today, she moved to South Florida, which she's still trying to love. She loves living by the ocean and bookstores and loves supporting indie writers. Matilda loves books of all genres but has a special place in her heart for urban fantasy like the Dresden Files and the Iron Druid series. She owns more books than she could possibly read and has a passion for buying books from indie authors. Today, in addition to a new chapter in the Vespers Chronicles, Matilda is working on a witchy tale and another about death dealers. Matilda lives in Miami, Florida with her husband and dog. Tune in to hear Matilda’s thoughts pertaining to: What gave her the confidence to find her voice and go on this journey of becoming a fiction author. (3:36) How grants and fundraising is a lot like storytelling, pulling out stories for grant writing was part of the process.(6:07) How Matilda transcribes what happens in her head as a sci-fi writer. (10:38) The inspiration which led her to write her self-published book, Vespers Chronicles. (13:01) She introduces her new series, Daughters of Knight Chronicles. (15:17) The co-writing world: how co-writing and writing alone are completely different. (15:45) Why Matilda decided to self-publish her books. (18:19) The pay gap between black as well as brown writers when compared to the pay of white writers and racism in the publishing industry. (24:09) How Matilda connects with writers on Twitter. (25:12) Why she stresses the importance of separating her professional versus. creative life. (29:27) Her new book examines racism through the lens of Latina witches who are fighting. (30:50) Matilda’s thought-process about prioritizing her writing and writing ideas. (33:33) As black or brown people of color, can we embolden ourselves to ask for more? This episode was almost named Toilet Crisis, but we went with A Beautiful Mess because that's what 2BT is! About halfway through the episode a real life disaster injects itself into our fun time, and the result is epic. Topics covered are music and memories, Star Wars Celebration, collecting addiction, the Iron Druid series of novels, mythology, the Netflix Punisher series, the movie First Man, and a toilet travesty. Plus more!
Hey there, listeners! It's time for the next installment of Iron Druid, and in this episode we get into a pretty hairy fight with a gross demon that turns out to be a fallen angel. Oh, and also we meet Mary, Mother of God. NBD. While I still think Atticus is a major shit and hope that he gets smacked in the head a million times, I can at least root for Coyote in the fight against the demon, although the reveal of the thing that makes Atticus so mad at the end of their scene together didn't make a lot of sense to me or the person in the chat with me, so if someone wants to explain that I'm all ears. Thank you very much to Lian for commissioning this episode, and the next episode isn't purchased yet so if you're interested hit me up at unspoiledpodcast.com/shop!
Hey everyone! I'm here with the final installment of Iron Druid, in which a certain freaky witch jumps into the mix and fucks shit up. Also, Atticus does some stuff. This was a really fun book, and I'm a big fan of getting to see new ways of working magic, so there were a lot of little moments in this that were gratifying. From Laksha's sharing a body with Gran, to the way the werewolves communicate, to the fact that the earth can be sucked dry of power if you're selfish enough, there was a lot here that I found fascinating. But I have to say, I don't know that sleeping with the goddess of death and battlefields is the reward I would be looking for. Good thing about that extra sword. Thanks so much for commissioning this episode, Aaron, and I can't wait to get started on the next book!
Thank you so much to anonymous for commissioning this next episode of Hounded! If you'd like to buy the book and read along, you can do so here: https://amzn.to/2xoCBPIShit has really hit the fan for Atticus in these chapters. That damn cop has committed suicide-by-colleague, the gunshot wound that he was able to heal almost instantly is still going to cost him thousands unless he can sue the city, and the cops, namely Jiminez, are pretty suspicious of the fact that he's suddenly toting around a sword after the whole altercation began with someone spotting a sword. Meanwhile, it turns out that the hot bartender is hosting a witch spirit inside her head, and that witch used to be seriously bad news. She claims to want to change her ways, but Atticus isn't totally convinced, and part of the deal they strike up is that if he helps her retrieve her necklace from Radomila, she move far, far, FAR away. Also, Radomila is probably not as benevolent as she appears to be. Thanks so much for listening, and i hope you've been enjoying the show!
Many thanks to Susan Hayes for sponsoring the next episode of Iron Druid: Hounded! I'm really getting into this story now, and I have no idea what to expect next which is always a really fun feeling. So this episode I'm covering the chapters where Atticus has the police absolutely all the way up his ass. They get called over because of the fight he had with the Fir Bolgs to start off with, but then it turns into a whole thing because fucking Aengus is obviously trying to set Atticus off. So they not only figure out that the park ranger was killed by a dog, they even know what kind of dog. Then there's the whole thing with Brighid showing up. Now this bitch I do not trust at all. I don't know what it is about her, perhaps the fact that her motives are a little too pure and I never really believe that's ever the case when it comes to gods and fae, but also because of how skillfully she seems to wring information out of Atticus. Sure, one could argue that she doesn't "wring" anything from him and that he's just telling his new ally some valuable info, buuuuut...I'm not buying it. Hope that you all enjoy the episode, and I will see you this Friday with the next 5 chapters!
Thank you to Aaron Schwartz for commissioning another episode covering Iron Druid! If you'd like to pick up a copy, you can do so here, and support the show as well! https://amzn.to/2CxCzL9The next 5 chapters of Hounded are packed with action and interesting bits of information on how magic works, how Atticus does what he does, and all of that...but mostly what I'm interested in is all the information about witches. I don't think there was any mention of the fact that witches even existed in this world, but we get an introduction to one in particular whom I find simply delightful in her nastiness, and she's part of a larger coven run by an even more powerful witch. Atticus isn't aware of what he's agreeing to do when he makes a deal with her to brew a tea that will make her unattractive, but when he finds out, it just spells way more bad news for him. Thanks so much for listening, and hopefully I will see you soon with some new chapters!
I'm starting on a new book this week, Hounded by Kevin Hearne, which is part of the Iron Druid series. It's got a lot of that Dresden Files flavor, but with a different attitude towards magic and towards supposedly mythical beings than the world Jim Butcher has created. Atticus is a couple of millenia old and he's sick of this bullshit. He's been running from faeries for a long-ass time, and keeps getting jumped, and keeps uprooting his life and starting over somewhere new just because they're on his trail. But this time, the faerie thugs sent to take him down are not motivating him to run away; instead he's decided that he's going to make a last stand and face off with the god that he's pissed off, once and for all. Of course, there's a catch. He's only still alive because the Morrigan, goddess of death and battlefield carnage, has decided that she doesn't like the god who is after Atticus much herself, and she's keeping him alive out of spite. Which is kind of my favorite thing? But she's not the only goddess of death out there, and there's still a chance that one of the others might come for Atticus, in time. This was a lot of fun, and many thanks to Aaron Schwartz for commissioning it! If you'd like to pick up a copy of Iron Druid, you can do that here! https://amzn.to/2PeecU7

Tales from the Fandom presents Book Trek. Jachelle Overstreet joins me to talk about our first series, The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. We start with Grimoire of the Lamb, a novella set 4 years before the events in the first novel of the series, Hounded. We talk about Atticus O'Sullivan, the Iron Druid and cover the plot and characters and what worked/didn't work for us with the novella. For new readers of this series, we recommend reading at least the first novel before reading this novella, as things will make a bit more sense.
