We're TAKING YOU BACK to the Third Men Podcast! Jack White's first new solo music in over 3 years is finally here, and we're excited to deep dive into the new single, its gentle B-side, and speculate on what's yet to come! In the reflective spirit of Taking Me Back, we're also celebrating the new by delving into what came before... as we take you back to a little place we call Rock'n'Roll High School. Across geography and generations, the high school experience is rich with the musical discovery and experimentation that help forge lifelong tastes. Jack's time at Cass Tech is a prime example of just how important those late teen years can be, and this week we're enlisting the help of some very special guests to walk us through their own respective high school eras. First up is listener Nick Langford, whose furious shredding helped inspire recent episodes such as Anatomy of a Fandom and Open Show 2021. Next -- fresh off of the release of his band The Bootheels new collection 1988: The Original Demos (featuring bandmates Jakob Dylan, Tobi Miller and Aaron A. Brooks) singer/songwriter/musician Luther Russell is on hand to reflect on his own teen music experience. When he's not releasing solo music, playing with groups such asThose Pretty Wrongs and The Freewheelers, or writing songs for bands such as Weezer, Luther lays down some serious rock'n'roll knowledge on music podcasts far and wide - and he's here to illuminate our discussion here today. We're so thrilled to be joined by Luther and Nick on this special episode, and hope you all dig our venture back into Rock'n'Roll High School! Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 22, 2021. The long-anticipated, and oft-touted definitive, adaption of the science fiction book ‘Dune' is now in theaters and HBO Max. Politics for the Love of Fandom: Fan-Based Citizenship in a Digital World (Louisiana State Press, 2019) examines what Ashley Hinck calls “fan-based citizenship”: civic action that blends with and arises from participation in fandom and commitment to a fan-object. Examining cases like Harry Potter fans fighting for fair trade, YouTube fans donating money to charity, and football fans volunteering to mentor local youth, Hinck argues that fan-based citizenship has created new civic practices wherein popular culture may play as large a role in generating social action as traditional political institutions such as the Democratic Party or the Catholic Church. Hinck considers the ways in which fan-based social engagement arises organically, from fan communities seeking to change their world as a group, as well as the methods creators use to leverage their fans to take social action. The modern shift to networked, fluid communities, Hinck argues, opens up opportunities for public participation that occurs outside of political parties, houses of worship, and organizations for social action. Politics for the Love of Fandom shows how fan-based citizenship performances help us understand the future possibilities of public engagement, as fans and creators alike tie the ethical frameworks of fan-objects to desired social goal, such as volunteering for political candidates, mentoring at-risk youth, and promoting environmentally friendly policy.  Dr. Ashley Hinck (she/her) is Assistant Professor of Communication at Xavier University specializing in digital media, fandom, citizenship, social activism, rhetoric. The Choo Choo Soul brand was acquired by Disney in 2005, when they created new music videos to air on their morning programming block. Fans worldwide loved the funky, fun authentic music and Genevieve's soulful voice. After 4 seasons of original music and Disney Classics, a Parents Choice Award and 14+ years of touring, Choo Choo Soul has become an iconic brand within the Family Music industry. Genevieve's voice can be heard on various Disney songs, including the popular new "Ready for Preschool" and "Disney Junior Music Nursery Rhyme" series for which she also writes and produces. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 15, 2021. With a couple of things for a grownup audience and some choices for the kids in the family as well, there are choices to make when it comes to consuming entertainment. The Last Duel is a brutal movie that might be difficult to watch despite the big-name cast and its epic scope. Over on Hulu, Dopesick is a new true-story miniseries about the beginnings of the Opioid Epidemic in the United States, which might make you start thinking about Big Pharma the same as Big Tabacco. For younger audiences, The Baby-Sitters Club on Netflix is back for season two in eight new episodes on friendship, adventure, and the personal journey of growing up. For more creepy kid fair head on over to DisneyPlus where the Just Beyond anthology series inspired by R.L. Stine's imaginative writings takes audiences down supernatural stories of self-discovery and Goosbumping potential.   Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Brilliant opinions and commentary on all things geek, but surprising knowledge and witty arguments over pop culture, Star Trek, MARVEL vs DC, and a wide range of movies, TV shows, and more. In the first of a 2-part episode (part b to be released on Sunday), Marc and Kristina continue the dive into the GenX-dominated fandom/standom that surrounds William White, a 21-year-old TikTok creator and model from Canada.  During the researching of this project, Marc and Kristina have repeatedly questioned how the fandom went from women sincerely supporting women and together helping to catapult a deserving young man to internet fame, all the way to virtual gang warfare in five months.  We believe that social media (with its promise of anonymity, false sense of intimacy, and a misguided sense of security around expectations of privacy) and the perfect storm of events surrounding the discovery of William White by his Generation X fans (who themselves were seeking fun and perhaps connection and camaraderie on a new social media platform), have led to a standom that is marked on all sides by bullying, organized propaganda campaigns, disinformation, doxxing, threats of legal action, growing resentments that devolve into angry outbursts, and, most dramatically, the involvement of state and federal law enforcement actively investigating various allegations. William White is actually secondary to this narrative.  He is discussed only as and when he illustrates a point within the story of his fandom.  This is not a biography of William or the things he did last summer.  Neither Marc, nor Kristina, is interested in bashing William or hurting him.  We only wish him the best as his career continues.
