He could have built a billion-dollar company, but instead, Jimmy Wales built a movement. When the dotcom crash hit and funding vanished, he didn't sell out or add ads. He doubled down on values, creating Wikipedia, a global temple for the mind that made knowledge free to billions. In this episode, Jimmy joins Ilana to share the story behind that decision, the failures that shaped him, and the community that built the impossible. He breaks down why the best ideas come from doing something interesting, not chasing money. Jimmy Wales is the co-founder of Wikipedia and the founder of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that supports Wikipedia and its sister projects. He also co-founded Fandom (formerly Wikia), one of the web's largest community platforms. In this episode, Ilana and Jimmy discuss: (00:00) Introduction (02:31) How Childhood Curiosity Sparked Wikipedia's Vision (05:59) Turning Crisis Into Innovation During the Dotcom Crash (08:08) The Creation of Wikipedia (14:19) The Power of Community When Capital Runs Out (20:14) Why Jimmy Refused to Monetize Wikipedia (29:54) Early Fundraising Efforts for Wikipedia (34:21) What Makes Someone Truly Notable on Wikipedia (39:11) AI's Role in Wikipedia's Future (46:15) Inside The Seven Rules of Trust (57:17) Jimmy's Ultimate Advice to Just Start Jimmy Wales is the co-founder of Wikipedia, the world's largest free encyclopedia, and Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that supports it. An advocate for open, collaborative knowledge sharing, he has empowered millions to contribute to a global resource of information. Recognized by TIME as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World, Jimmy is also the author of The Seven Rules of Trust, where he shares the principles that guided his journey and offers insights on building lasting endeavors. This bonus episode is a chance to step back and make sense of everything that just unfolded in Cracks in the Fandom. If you listened to the series, you saw how an Instagram unfollow spiraled into harassment, infighting, and full-on chaos inside the SVU fandom. This series was petty, confusing , and pretty revealing about how people form attachments online. I wanted to understand why this happens. Why someone can feel personally betrayed by an actor they don't even know. So I reached out to Bradley J. Bond, a professor at the University of San Diego who studies parasocial relationships for a living. He breaks down what these one-sided bonds actually are, why they feel real, and how they can slide from harmless to unhealthy faster than we think. Over a bottle of Starward Two-Fold, Tim proudly redeclares his love for Milva, while Valerie finds much to appreciate in new character Stefan Skellen…even if she keeps getting him mixed up with Stellan Skarsgård. We also debate the merits of blood splatters, get to the bottom of Yen's portaling problem and settle the question about which actor looks better in Geralt's wig. Plus, we bring back our “hmm” count, elaborate on some book differences and shoot some terrible banana liqueur that haunts our nightmares to this day. In short, it's a truly generous pour of an episode…and we're just getting started! Hold music: "Local Forecast - Slower" by Kevin MacLeod

We'd love to hear from you! Reach out to us via this Buzzsprout link to let us know what you're thinking about this episode!Chrisha and Catherine are BACK to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the "I love you" heard around the world in Supernatural's episode "Despair."They begin with an update on how they are both doing (spoiler alert: shipwreck documentaries and true crime are major pasttimes at the moment) and their take on the current status of fandom in general. They then move on to the events from Purgatory Con 9, which took place in Dusseldorf, Germany, from May 31st-June 1st, 2025. They focus in particularly on Jensen talking about the meaning of "Watching Over Me" and his approbation as he listened to Misha discuss "Despair"'s homosexual declaration of love. As part of this discussion, they contrast their past worry about getting things wrong in their analysis with their current, more relaxed feeling about approaching Supernatural-related material, even without the confirmation of figures like Ackles.Their conclusion: If it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it's a f***ing duck, y'all. And that's how they're going to approach everything from now on.Note: The question Jensen answered about "Watching Over Me" was from @blanketforcas.bsky.social, who kindly provided us with a transcript of what she asked here after this episode went live! That moment, captured on home video, wasn't just about football. It was about the way a team becomes a language between generations. Rewatching that clip sends Cal into a reflection of his own: the passion for sporting events his father passed on to him, and the emotions he passed on to his son. This episode is about the deep inheritance that lives inside sports — identity, loyalty and love. The Los Angeles Dodgers recent World Series win shows Cal how the games can outlive us in the hearts of the people we leave behind.

In the second half of our conversation, we're (at times unseriously) looking at one of the biggest and most complicated conversations in the book world right now: the Alchemised controversy and what it says about fanfiction, publishing, and existing IP.In this episode, we dig into whether the art and the artist can be separated in cases like this, and we bring up some of our favorite examples – Fifty Shades of Gray, The Love Hypothesis, Dead Romantics. But we also look at the bigger picture about how fandom culture shapes publishing, and how we can answer questions about ownership and moral responsibility when AI has also entered the chat.Of course, it wouldn't be a Kristin chat without several tangents, so tune in for additional conversation on our recent reads (including some dark romance), taboos, and where we draw the line when reading these.Question: Do you think the art and the artist can be separated?Tell us in the comments below. If you have an author, book, or topic you want to hear about on the podcast, then don't hesitate to slide into my DMs on Instagram or shoot me an email!Subscribe to my newsletter to keep up to date on the latest podcast happenings: https://in-bed-with-books.kit.com/76d11f1d51Where else to find me:IG: @inbedwithbookspodYT: https://www.youtube.com/@InBedWithBooksPodEM: inbedwithbookspodcast@gmail.com

Hey, it's Javier. Quick update: Meghan Walsh, the subject of my Cracks in the Fandom series, has filed copyright complaints on every major platform. As a result, Spotify and Patreon have temporarily taken down the series. My attorneys are already on it, and we expect everything to be restored soon. In the meantime, it's Halloween weekend — so let's have some fun. I'm bringing back some of my favorite spooky episodes from the PRETEND archives. Today's story? Real Vampires. Yeah, real ones. It's one of my all-time favorites, and honestly, there's no better time of year to revisit it. Stick around... I'll be dropping more eerie episodes all weekend long. Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. It's almost Halloween! So for this month's ReView episode, I'm revisiting a fun-sized shoujo horror OVA. Based on a 70s manga and animated in the 80s by some of the top horror anime staff at Madhouse, it's the Bride of Deimos OVA! At the 2023 Birmingham Mash Up weekend, Caroline saw this in action.Examples include fan appropriation through fanfiction, with eroticised predictions of Chelsea and Freddie, moral realignments like Alan's disapproval of the church window, refocalisations centring minor characters and even trees, and recontextualisations such as panels on men's mental health. Fan creativity also extended to craft, with works made for and during the event. The weekend also illustrated Jenkins's concept of audience–producer convergence. Attendees engaged with producers and podcasters, from DumTeeDum's singalong to One Stiletto in the Grave, as well as presentations revealing the soundscape of The Archers. Social media, especially the Sunday Tweetalong, showcased how fans circulate and distribute their work. Finally, Caroline considers Jenkins's optimism that fandom and digital technology can effect wider social change. The joy of shared fandom, and the charitable fundraising at these gatherings, demonstrates the power of fan communities to create connection and do good.About the speakerCaroline Birks is a writer and researcher with a focus on fandom culture. She has a chapter in Fandom Culture and The Archers and has long explored how communities of fans create meaning and connection through shared storytelling. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

Also, ganz viel Spaß! In zwei Wochen bin ich dann aber auch wieder ganz normal zurück mit einer neuen Folge Deutschland3000. Übrigens auch was für Fans von einer bestimmten Serie: Eine Schauspielerin wird bei mir zu Gast sein. So viel verrate ich schon mal. Jetzt aber erst mal viel Spaß mit „Battle of the Nerds“. Habt ihr Lust bekommen? Ab jetzt gibt es in den nächsten vier Wochen jeden Donnerstag eine neue Folge: https://1.ard.de/BattleOfTheNerds

In this episode, we meet Lauren. She claims to be the biological mother of Mariska's adopted daughter. Her story begins with a supposed secret adoption, and spirals into accusations of betrayal and abandonment. Lauren says the actress is not just stalking her, but working behind the scenes to silence anyone who challenges her. Meghan believes her. To her, Lauren is the missing piece that proves her own story is real. But the more we dig, the harder it becomes to separate truth from delusion. Is this the beginning of a deeper conspiracy?
