Throughout the Draculae miniseries, about the Swedish and Icelandic translations of Dracula that played fast and loose with the original text, I've been wondering a couple of questions: why are cover versions of songs and remakes of films so normal and acceptable, whereas cover versions in book form cause such a stir? And do these Scandinavian Draculae count as fan fiction? And if not, why not? Fansplaining.com's Elizabeth Minkel explains what fan fiction can mean.Visit theallusionist.org/transformation for more information plus a transcript of the episode. And though this is the fourth and last part of the Draculae miniseries, it is more inspired by than directly connected to the other episodes, so you don't have to listen to them beforehand. But do listen to them, they're very fun and intriguing!Content note: this episode contains some references to (but not descriptions of) sexual content and sex slavery. There is also mention of J.K. Last month, the Wall Street Journal declared this summer to be the era of the “man band.” Those would be boy bands who've grown up — think New Kids on the Block, Boys II Men and the Jonas Brothers — along with their fans, who now have more disposable income to fork out. Exhibit A: The Backstreet Boys residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas last summer grossed more than $55 million. But it's about more than the money. It's about the mostly middle-aged women who are no longer afraid of the cringe — and the mostly middle-aged boys-turned-men who are no longer afraid to embrace the passion of their fans. Novelist Emma Straub saw that fandom first hand when she went on a New Kids on the Block cruise several years ago — and was blown away by the intensity and camaraderie of the now adult “Blockheads.” That visit inspired her new novel, “American Fantasy,” which is a deep dive into the lucrative world of a fictional ‘90s-era boy band named Boy Talk and the woman who still worship them. Straub joins Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to talk about boy bands, the pleasure of enjoying them without shame and how aging changes our perceptions of our past — and current — selves.Guest:Emma Straub is is a New York Times-bestselling author and the owner of a Brooklyn-based bookstore, Books Are Magic. On this edition of Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman, guest co-hosts Alan Minsky and Mel Figueroa present another installment of The People's Game, a quadrennial series that looks at the economic and political subtexts of the world's most popular sport. They are joined by Ryan McKnight, a doctoral researcher at Manchester Met University in the UK who is researching the impact of neoliberalism on what he calls “the opportunity of football fandom.” According to Ryan, football fandom is one of the last remaining forms of large-scale collectivism in the UK, offering a unique window into the nature of society. Next, Alan Minsky speaks to former Congressman Jamaal Bowman to get his thoughts on the World Cup, the victory of his hometown Knicks, and how both are being experienced in Mayor Mamdani's NYC. Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.

Ryan is a musician and founding member of the metalcore band Until I Wake. What began as a fan purchasing merchandise soon crossed a dangerous line. The fan became fixated on Ryan, flooding him with messages, changing their last name to match his, claiming they were married, and threatening to travel across the country to wait outside his home. Today, Ryan shares what happens when fandom turns into obsession, how stalking can impact musicians and public figures, and what it's like to continue performing and living his life while facing an active and ongoing stalking threat. Summer House Fandom Is Doing Too Much (Part 2) ft. Jazmine Henley BrownEmily Rose is joined by Jazmine Henley Brown to talk Summer House and why this season's fandom discourse got so intense. Jazmine shares she's a day-one viewer, but only recently started engaging heavily because of the current scandal, and both agree the show is basically an unserious weekend-party series that's being treated like team sports. They discuss whether West and Amanda “ruined their lives,” arguing everyone will be ultimately fine and audiences move on fast. They also discuss the leaked reunion audio, how editing and IP protection (like In the City) shape narratives, and how fan outrage affects cast behavior and content creators—especially around criticism of Ciara and the tendency to read nuance as taking sides.Follow Jazmine!!https://bio.site/jhenleybrown?fbclid=PAVERFWASmt-JleHRuA2FlbQIxMABzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA8xMjQwMjQ1NzQyODc0MTQAAacRgclWOPDfSEiiRMpFDoQ4ApzqD7wwEZfgeKEf-aWQWpSpgWxdjVQkKxHLhw_aem_Y212FvnTncAYTZhYT_kB7ASupport the showWHO TF KNOWS WITH EMILY ROSE NOW HAS A PATREON, SUBSCRIBE BELOW!https://www.patreon.com/WhoTFKnowswithEmilyRoseDon't want to sign up for something new? Some fires consume, while others transform, but the difference may not be found in the flame, but in what you're willing to place within it.Time has a way of changing people, even if old grievances insist otherwise. Years may dull the edge, but they may not erase the wound that sharpened it, and some flames can still burn inward long after the first spark.Sometimes healing begins when the hurt is forgotten, but other times it begins when both sides are finally willing to set it down. Old names, fears, guilt, and anger may be offered to the fire, but the test is having the courage to let them burn. After all, fire is not only capable of destroying what was, but sometimes it can reveal what remains.---Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/naturalsixJoin our Discord! https://discord.gg/HNV56DADnJFollow us on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/naturalsixFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/natural_sixFollow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@natural.sixLove lore? Well *sigh* how did we get here ??? Always in motion is the future .......... but the question remains STILL how did we get here ??? We all remember how THIS started ..................... Lucasfilm officially announced three major live-action Star Wars films at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, each tackling a different era of the franchise. The projects had included a Rey-centric film, a New Republic culmination directed by Dave Filoni, and an ancient origin story, which was to be directed by James Mangold But then like a disturbance in the FORCE hahahahahahahahaha LOL LOL LOL LOL MORE like Bob Iger bending knee to his shareholder, pivoted away from the previously announced three films .............Disney and Lucasfilm officially announced The Mandalorian & Grogu movie on January 9, 2024. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film was released in theaters on May 22, 2026 *sigh* and in short we are here my friends On the latest episode of Fandom Awakens Radio, "Action, Excitement, Smashing your Toys, Together A Star Wars seeks MORE then these things" LOL LOL LOL hahahahahahaha, your hosts David Senden and Kyle Wagner discuss in FULL Beskarian SPOILER-y goodness the Mandalorian & Grogu, does THIS have the feel of a STAR WARS movie ?? or is it simply what we ALL feared it would be, a glorified episode (or few episodes) of a TV show, I will give it THIS tho and YES this is serving as the next major chapter in the adventures of the beloved bounty hunter and his adopted son obviously, but end of the day ALL the Mandalorian & Grogu is its a apology letter for Season 3 of the Mandalorian which was ABSOLUTE dogwater "HELP me STARFIGHTER ................. your my only HOPE !!!!!!!" a BRAND NEW episode of Fandom Awakens Radio starts RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!
Recorded live at Indiana Comic Convention - Holly Frey and Bryan Young gathered before a live audience to talk about the challenges facing the production of A New Hope, the original Star Wars film as George Lucas worked feverishly to complete the film as Fox got more and more impatient with how over schedule and over budget the film was. Still, he had some decisions to make.

An enduring theme of the Knicks' historic finals run has been squabbling over who and what constitutes “a real fan,” exacerbated by astronomical ticket prices, the intrusion of Kalshi, and the Side Talkification of New York. But what, exactly, is the role of gatekeeping when you want these moments of mass enthusiasm? On the pod this week, we talk about New York after the Knicks' win, why the gatekeeping discourse is almost as annoying as the kind of “GRWM to watch the Knicks at the White Horse Tavern”-type content, and avoiding a Jesse Plemmons in Civil War-style fandom litmus test. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Host Meg Wolitzer presents two unconventional love stories, one classic, one contemporary, that avoid the usual tropes of “meet cute,” “opposites attract,” or “happily ever after” but are still engaging. In “Love in the Slump,” by Evelyn Waugh, clueless upper-crust newlyweds are sent on a comic odyssey. The reader is Jane Kaczmarek. And Esther Yi's “Moon” explores something we often mistake for love—obsession--as a young woman is drawn farther and farther into K-Pop fandom. The story was selected by guest editor Min Jin Lee for Best American Short Stories 2023. It's read by Hettienne Park. And we hear Lee's and Park's thoughts about the story.
