We spoke with Monia Ali, author of the Fandom Exile Substack, about how true crime is becoming more and more like a fandom. We talked about the difference between stans and fans, how fandoms go bad, and how we can all combat toxicity in true crime. In new segment, True Crime Wave, we'll be talking about issues endemic to true crime. At its best, true crime offers the audience a way to learn about stories of crime, social issues, legal realities, and the real human beings at the heart of cases. It can be educational and compassionate and cathartic and thoughtful and incisive, and it can help raise awareness of cases. Good true crime can show case all kinds of different perspectives. It can center journalism, advocacy, legal analysis, investigative approaches, the experiences of survivors or victims' families, and more. That is all very good. But too often, we see true crime devolve. We have seen online mobs, harassment, conspiracy theories, ethics-washing, and more. True crime won't get better on its own. We think talking about these things will help. On the latest Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast, Cam welcomes Seahawks Pro Bowl defensive tackle Leonard Williams for a wide-ranging, funny, and surprisingly nerdy conversation that goes from playoffs to Pro Bowls to Pokémon. Leonard breaks down why this Seahawks squad is the best team he’s ever been on. He and Cam also chop it up about Seattle’s push for the top playoff seed in the NFC, the importance of a first-round bye, and how different it feels playing meaningful December football after years on teams that didn’t win. He opens up about how joining Seattle changed his career trajectory, what it’s like playing for head coach Mike McDonald, and the life of a hybrid defensive lineman. From Philip Rivers NFL return to USC football to anime debates to becoming a father, this conversation is a blend of football IQ, storytelling, laughs, and real insight into one of the league’s most versatile trench players. Kayti Burt—who first wrote for us last spring, in a fantastic piece on the precarity of being a fandom journalist (https://www.fansplaining.com/articles/the-fan-journalist-tightrope)—returns to Fansplaining to tackle the subject of fandom tourism, and how fans can approach journeys with respect rather than entitlement. "Can Fandom Make Us Better Tourists?" In an era of overtourism, South Korea's Jeju Island and international BTS fans are building bridges of mutual respect. In this discussion of Season 4's third episode, we somberly discuss the tragic death of—um, who? Beata? Who the heck is Beata? Sadly, the young refugee was struck down just as we were getting to know…well, pretty much anything about her. But that's okay, we have plenty of other things to discuss over our bottle of Hye-Land 12-Year Single Malt Armenian Whiskey. Like how Regis is clearly just a regular, ordinary human that just happens to have remarkable pain tolerance. And how wearing a bra on the outside of your dress may actually be quite practical. And how you really should aspire to do more with your magical abilities than to be turned into portal goo. But mostly how disappointed we were that Geralt of Rawvia and Yennefer of Bangerberg didn't actually use that unicorn they had on stage. But hey, we DID get the debut of Leo Bonhart, who mercilessly took the life of—wait, what was that Witcher's name again?

Recorded: November 24, 2025 Former NFL linebacker Will Compton and former left tackle Taylor Lewan sit down in the back of the bus for a full Thanksgiving preview packed with football talk, drama, and plenty to be thankful for. The Boys break down what’s been going on inside the bus — including Taylor’s battle with gout, his potential all-veggie Thanksgiving diet, and how he’s fighting through it one step at a time. Bussin’ Head of Social Media Jack McPherson exposes a growing darkness inside the shop: an office troll. Producer Jeremy Klump is forced to defend his honor in a trial by combat, facing accusations of the ultimate thanksgiving-season crime — being a fraudulent football fan. Will and Taylor also question Clay Matthews’ Locker Room picks, leading into a fired-up Tier Talk ranking the best holiday drinks and brews. Then producer JP Hovey jumps into the mix, calling out Will Compton for allegedly lying about watching movies and shows, sparking yet another showdown on the bus. The Boys bring it all home by sharing what they’re most thankful for and what they’d do anything for this Thanksgiving season. Big Hugs & Tiny Kisses! In today's episode, we jumped right back on the Emerald City Express with third-time guest, Leena Norms (she/her). Leena joined us for our episode Wonka x Antisemitism and Censorship in January 2024 and then again in December 2024 for our episode Wicked x Paratexts. Now she's back to help us make sense of Wicked: For Good. Marcelle leads the episode beginning with a quick conversation about femslash, a subgenre of fan fiction which, broadly-speaking, focuses on romantic/sexual relationships between female fictional characters. Before jumping deeper into the history of femslash, Hannah, Marcelle and Leena discuss the essential question: how gay is this sequel? From there, Marcelle takes us into a conversation about subtext and representation. As always, the episode ends with a perfectly sound thesis and discussion of the movie, the media storm around the film, how Glinda is positioned as a hero, queerbaiting and revolutionary politics.Follow Leena on Youtube here! What happens when fans learn their beloved Star Trek is returning, but not the way they expect? This week on The Trek Files, we take a mid-season dive into the pre-internet letter-writing era of fandom with a look at Interstat #109, a Star Trek "LOC-zine" published just after the announcement of The Next Generation in late 1986. With Mission Log host and producer John Champion joining Larry, we revisit that first wave of passionate, skeptical, and sometimes prophetic reactions from fans adjusting to the idea of Star Trek without Kirk, Spock, or the original cast. From fears about recasting to early excitement about a new crew, these letters reveal a fandom both resistant to change and deeply hopeful for Trek's future. And while the tone may be more thoughtful than today's drive-by social media culture, the underlying emotions haven't changed. Together, John and Larry reflect on how fandom evolves, why backlash often masks deep investment, and how publications like Interstat helped shape the Trek we know today—slowly, one stamp at a time.

Doctor Who continues to light up our television screens after sixty-two years. In all those years there have been periodic discussions within fandom over whether a particular story or time period within the series is sexist or even if Doctor Who as a whole has sexist undertones. In recent years, the charge has come that... The post The 42cast Episode 263: Is Doctor Who Sexist? appeared first on The 42cast.
Welcome to the ultimate SPN music nerd-out! This Denim-wrapped Nightmares and In Defense of Fandom crossover dives deep into the sonic world of Supernatural with the dynamic duo behind the show's iconic score: composers Christopher Lennertz and Jay Gruska.Chris and Jay split scoring duties for all 15 years (yes, really—they alternated episodes like the world's most functional musical marriage), and they spill all the secrets: from creating the beloved "Americana" family theme to writing horror music that could pivot to comedy faster than Dean Winchester can inhale a slice of pie.Discover how these fraternity brothers-turned-collaborators blended classic rock vibes with creepy cellos, why Jay nearly got canceled by fans for using the family theme with the wrong character (oops), and what it was like scoring everything from black-and-white monster homages to full-blown musicals. Plus: behind-the-scenes stories about schmuckbait, temp scores, and why sometimes you just have to let the tuba impulses go.Whether you're here for the technical talk or just want to know how they made 327 episodes feel like coming home, this episode is a love letter to the unsung heroes who made sure we felt every Winchester moment—even when we didn't consciously notice the music at all.Special thanks to Rob Benedict and Louden Swain for allowing us to feature a couple of their tracks, which, thematically, are also songs from Supernatural episodes.
