Host Jesse Jackson welcomes Holly, co-host of the mostly '80s music show What Difference Does It Make? Podcast, for a wide-ranging conversation that moves beyond Bruce Springsteen into radio, fandom, and podcasting. Holly shares her early love of AM radio after moving from New York to Los Angeles, her career behind the scenes in radio syndication and production, and how her parents' music shaped her broad tastes. Things have gotten very surreal in the dark corners of the internet. AI-generated prophets are preaching jihad in Facebook groups, Minecraft servers host digital caliphates, and school shooting fandoms gather to study their heroes and plot how to up beat their score. It's a double bill on this episode of Angry Planet as two experts from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a nonprofit that studies and works to mitigate violent extremists, discuss the brave new world of online-born violence.First up is Milo Comerford, the co-author of a study about nihilistic violence. This week, we're stealing a couple hours of your time to discuss The Rats: A Witcher Tale, the prequel movie that dropped at the same time as Season 4 and is designed to be watched after it…despite taking place well before. (The Witcher's up to its timeline shenanigans again, it seems.) Paired with the perfectly-themed Master of the Thieves Guild Blended Bourbon by Quest's End Whiskey, we keep things loose, lively and liquidated as we unpack the plots—meaning both the film's narrative and the Rats' plot to steal loads of cash—and try to figure out just what happened to this thing behind the scenes. Also, we come out in favor of bathing with a drunken Dolph Lundgren, debate the role of cephalopods in sex dens and reveal why when it comes to spider women, most movies just like to tease.

There are stories that live in the moonlight, and carried by voices willing to give them breath. Tales passed down, reshaped, and shared again, woven with hope, wonder, and the reminder that beauty is worth protecting. In the glow of lanterns, a single story rises above the quiet, gathering hearts together in a moment almost bright enough to chase the shadows away. But even the most hopeful tale must make room for truth, and some truths arrive with weight. In the wake of stolen joy, choices must be made, and consequences must be faced. The path to atonement begins slowly, with broken shards and difficult promises, and a plan that asks for courage from those who fear they have none left. Sometimes the only way to defend what you love is to stand before the world and speak plainly, even when the cost is your own peace.Yet shadows do not only fall across cities. They slip between people too, tugging at old fears and stirring doubts best left in the past. A single choice, and tales from the past can echo far louder when witnessed, leaving questions that settle in the space between trust and truth. But somewhere beyond those lingering questions, the promise of celebration begins to weave itself together, a hint of joy waiting to be stitched into something brighter.----Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/naturalsixJoin our Discord! https://discord.gg/HNV56DADnJFollow us on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/naturalsixFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/natural_sixFollow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@natural.sixLove lore? Professor of Journalism at USC Annenberg, Robert Kozinets, and Henry Jenkins speak with us about their ongoing book series Frames of Fandom. Both authors explore how they met, their ever-evolving work in fan studies, and what inspired them to create a 16-book series. Both scholars discuss the complexity of fandom as it intersects with consumer culture and subcultures. They even ask if fandom itself can be considered a subculture or something akin to religion! The conversation ends with a discussion of accessibility to academic texts, their choice of writing personal ethnographies throughout the books, and the future of the book series. Want to know how the sausage was made? Well, in this week's episode of Action Surge, we reveal far too much. Including how Doug removed and ate the filling from a sausage roll, then folded the pastry back together and put it back in the bag. Frankly, abhorrent.Once we have accepted that Doug might be a killer, it is back to D&D. We talk about those little shards of broken gem, and how utterly shocked Harry was when we casually ignored every piece of breadcrumbing he tried to lay down. We reflect on how right it felt for Dolly, Raidion, and Elowen to hang back, making space for some genuinely perfect story moments and very good dice rolls. I might have drugged a guy, but it was extremely cool.We also discuss how much we love piling on Ben whenever he does something silly, and look at what happened this time. We think about Dolly and her plans for the future, how Aoife imagines all of this playing out, and why we are absolutely convinced it is all going to be incredibly important. Finally, we discuss how deeply unfair it is for Alex to claim he is not patient when, in reality, he is just very excitable, and we love him for it.---Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/naturalsixJoin our Discord! https://discord.gg/HNV56DADnJFollow us on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/naturalsixFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/natural_sixFollow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@natural.sixLove lore? he guys tackle the bizarre idea of fans showing up to Yankee Stadium specifically to cheer Pete Alonso as a visiting player, questioning whether that's harmless fandom or just plain weird. Then the conversation pivots to Olympic hockey controversy, as callers debate whether three-on-three overtime is a fair way to decide a gold medal. Is it thrilling entertainment or a gimmick that cheapens a championship? Evan defends his long-standing stance that major titles should be decided under traditional rules, while others argue excitement matters more. They close with a deep dive into Jazz Chisholm's massive contract ambitions, breaking down whether his production, age, and the thin future free-agent market could actually justify the kind of deal he wants, and what kind of season it would take to make that payday a reality.

Fanbases are some of the most powerful forces on the planet. They show up. They buy the tickets. They travel across countries and time zones. They memorize lyrics, study interviews, hunt for Easter eggs, and turn the smallest detail into an entire universe of meaning. They collaborate, they organize, and they care deeply.Fan communities are savvy. They are smart. And when they are invited in, they create extraordinary momentum.Adam Met, best known as the “A” of indie-pop band AJR, believes that this kind of energy can extend far beyond concerts or comment sections. He is asking a bigger question. What if we harnessed that same passion, creativity, imagination, and sense of belonging to improve the communities we live in?Adam has spent years studying how to move people from curiosity to action. He's also a climate activist, the founder of the nonprofit Planet Reimagined, an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and the author of the bestselling book Amplify: How to Use the Power of Connection to Engage, Take Action, and Build a Better World. In our conversation, Adam explains how the same principles that make music meaningful - ownership, storytelling, participation, and belonging - can be applied to social movements, civic engagement, and climate action, to name a few. From designing fan-first concert experiences to rethinking how we engage people around complex issues, Adam argues that emotion is the engine of progress. This episode isn't really about music. And it's not really about climate either. It's about how we bring people together, help them feel invested, and create experiences that inspire them to act. This… is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------To buy Adam's book Amplify: How to Use the Power of Connection to Engage, Take Action, and Build a Better World, head to: https://www.adammet.net/amplifyIf you want to learn more about Adam's climate work, check out: https://www.planetreimagined.comAnd don't forget to stream AJR's latest EP, What No One's Thinking: https://www.ajrbrothers.com---------------------------
