Born and raised in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, Jason is the founder and principal of the Bronx School of Hip Hop, the first hip hop high school in the world, opening in New York City in September 2026. Before launching this groundbreaking school, Jason served as principal of MS 129 Academy and built his career around helping young people discover their identity, their voice, their brilliance, and their power. His journey was not easy. Jason grew up in foster care, experienced family loss and adversity, and still chose to dedicate his life to education and service. His story is rooted in resilience, culture, strength, and a refusal to let obstacles determine what is possible. In this conversation, we talk about how the Bronx School of Hip Hop came to be, why hip hop belongs in education, what it means to build a school around culture and identity, and how Jason is handling criticism from people who are not happy about his role as principal. The free annual festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29. The festival includes more than 80 juried artists working in a variety of artistic media as well as a stage with live music. This year's author's tent includes authors writing romance, crime and thrillers, and Austin history. The festival kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. with a talk by mystery writer William Kent Krueger. Ramlo says she is looking forward to that event as well as a film screening of the documentary “The Life & Art of Eric Anfinson.” Artists respond to Operation Metro Surge in Northeast Minneapolis exhibition Tricia Heuring is artistic director of Public Functionary in Northeast Minneapolis. She's excited about a group show taking place in her neighborhood at a nontraditional space: findfurnish on Central Avenue. Titled “The Radical Act of Having Each Other's Back,” the exhibit features the work of 26 artists created during and since U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements' Operation Metro Surge. There is an opening reception Thursday, Aug. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m., and the exhibition remains on view through Sept. 20. At the center of the exhibit, four graffiti writers have created their own black-and-white version of Picasso's painting “Guernica,” his response to the Nazi bombing of Guernica, Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. Heuring says this version, and the show, allows artists to reclaim the narrative following the height of ICE enforcement activity during Operation Metro Surge. Visitors can add magnetic pieces to the Guernica mural as a way of interacting with the story it is telling. “I really hope this is the first of many, many shows by artists processing what's been happening in our cities and and in our country. And I really hope that it inspires more artists to start opening up about the narratives that they want to share, so that we can continue just resisting and talking about the things that are happening.” Dede Decker transforms latch hook into contemporary fine art Jes Reyes is an artist and arts administrator in St. Paul. She wants people to know about Dede Decker's latch hook exhibit at Fresh Eye Gallery in Minneapolis, which runs through Sept. 27. Reyes says: “I'm drawn to artists who embrace intuitive making, blur the boundaries between craft and fine art and create work that is both joyful and deeply personal. As a fiber artist myself, I feel a particular connection to Dede's practice. I'm fascinated by the way she transforms latch hook — a medium many people associate with craft kits — into contemporary fine art through her own original designs. El recuerdo del cantante, actor y bailarín Bobby Williams nos trae de vuelta aquellas emisiones estelares de la radio independiente cubana de los años 40 cuando el swing y el bebop cautivaron a los músicos de la Isla. Transmisiones en directo donde también sobresalieron voces femeninas. Delia Bravo y Marta Pérez llegaron a los discos, sin embargo el rastro de Julieta Peñalver sobrevivió gracias a estos antiguos registros de la CMQ radio cuando sus estudios se encontraban en Monte y Prado y la orquesta de Armando Romeu (Jr) era una de las bandas que acompañaba a los intérpretes en ciernes. Más de aquellas emisiones históricas. Orlando Guerra, el original "Cascarita", uno de los más influyentes cantantes de la música popular cubana de los 40, afianzaba estilo y popularidad en el show radial patrocinado por el ron Pinilla y animado por el decano de los presentadores Germán Pinelli. Mambo, swing y bebop en su estilo formidable. Unos minutos para recordar la impronta del swing en el cauce artístico musical nuestro. Los tesoros de la música popular cubana, cada domingo, los traemos aquí de vuelta. Feeling en discos Panart gracias al empeño de Julio Gutiérrez, otro notable pianista, compositor y arreglista. Casi en el centro de los años 50 la boricua Lucy Fabery con el conjunto eléctrico del autor de "Inolvidable" incluyó en su repertorio algunos clásicos de ese importante movimiento autoral. Y en los mismos estudios de grabación Panart, unos años más tarde, Ramón Sabat produjo las hoy clásicas "Jam sessions". La categoría del jazz en la isla cobraba auge en el mercado discografico. A los minutos finales le pone sabor y sentimiento la banda del "Casino Parisien" que hacia 1958 dirigía el percusionista Walfredito de los Reyes.

In this episode I spoke with Xavier Aldana Reyes about his book "Body Horror". Xavier Aldana Reyes provides an engaging introduction to the inner workings of body horror, tracing its evolution from foundational works such as The Fly (1986) and Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) to recent films like Raw (2016) and The Substance (2024).

Jeffrey Epstein's final weeks at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan placed him in close proximity to several inmates who later became important witnesses to his state of mind and the conditions surrounding his death. One of them was William “Bill” Mersey, who has described himself as one of Epstein's closest jailhouse companions during the final month of Epstein's life. Mersey later said that he spent hours talking with Epstein and came to believe that Epstein was increasingly despondent after being denied bail and confronted with the reality of spending years, perhaps the rest of his life, behind bars. Mersey has since argued forcefully that Epstein died by suicide, saying the circumstances he observed inside MCC and Epstein's deteriorating outlook made that conclusion overwhelmingly likely in his view. He also described a jail environment plagued by dysfunction and incompetence, themes he later explored in his memoir about serving time at MCC alongside figures including Epstein and Paul Manafort. Mersey's recollections are significant because they offer a firsthand account of Epstein during a period when investigators were trying to determine whether his behavior suggested suicidal intent, although his conclusions remain those of a fellow inmate rather than an official forensic finding.Another important figure was Efrain “Stone” Reyes, a Bronx drug defendant who was reportedly Epstein's final cellmate before being transferred out of MCC shortly before Epstein died on August 10, 2019. According to accounts attributed to people who knew Reyes, the two men formed an unlikely relationship inside the jail, talking about Epstein's wealth and life while sharing a cell under extremely restrictive conditions. Reports said Epstein sometimes helped Reyes obtain medication to sleep and that Reyes later spoke with federal authorities about what he had observed inside MCC. After Epstein's death, Reyes was reportedly questioned repeatedly by investigators and was said to have told associates that then-Attorney General William Barr personally questioned him about staffing and conditions at the facility. Reyes was subsequently moved to a detention center used in part for cooperating witnesses, later contracted COVID-19, was released, and died in 2020.
