Herhjemme albumdebuterede teenagetrioen Dizzy Mizz Lizzy med suveræn sangskrivning og kyndig musikalitet, mens Kurt Cobain tog sit eget liv en måned senere. Tag med tilbage til det alsidige hårde rock år 1994, på godt og ondt, sammen med studievært Jens "Jam" Rasmussen og studiegæster Steffen Jungersen, Michael Stützer Hansen og Michael Denner. Tre måneder efter udsender de albummet “Time”, der ifølge Michael Denner og Steffen Jungersen ikke rammer det hårdeste eller højeste niveau. -1994 er et markant år for norsk black metal med debutalbum fra både Burzum og Dimmu Borgir og markante værker fra frontløberne Satyricon, Mayhem og Emperor. De to sidstnævnte får særlig opmærksomhed fra Steffen Jungersen. - I Sverige er der bl.a. albumdebut fra In Flames og progressivt goth metal-udspil fra Tiamat, mens finske Amorphis rammer både lys og skygge på deres interessante to'er "Tales From A Thousand Lakes”. - Pantera, Sepultura og Prong giver studieværten en 50 grader varm rusketur i Arizonas ørken, hvor førstnævntes aktuelle album “Far Beyond Driven” holder bandet tilpas på toppen. - 1994 byder på metalrock i alle dets afskygninger, herunder Slayer med ny trommeslager, Testament med en mere growlet vokallyd og Megadeth med et massivt MTV-hit. - Biohazard holder den godt kørende på albummet “State of the World Address”, mens bysbørnene Dog Eat Dog står for årets heavyhop-hit med “No Fronts”. - Californiske Korn lægger fundamentet for en ny lyd til den næste metal-generation. - Marilyn Manson albumdebuterer i retning af det dunkle og bizarre, mens Nine Inch Nails afliver skaberværket med hård metal-elektronik. - Kurt Cobain begår selvmord i sit hjem og tager Nirvana med i graven. - Nordirske Therapy? bryder igennem med “Troublegum” og indspiller med Ozzy, mens Soundgarden udsender det stærke album "Superunknown" og årets hitsingle “Black Hole Sun”. - Året indeholder også tunge og gode album fra C.O.C., Kyuss og Monster Magnet. - Sidst, men ingenlunde mindst, så udgiver Black Sabbath deres 17. studiealbum “Cross Purposes”, hvor loyale Tony Martin er tilbage ved mikrofonen efter det korte comeback til Dio. Interview by Kris PetersWaiting for something you truly desire can be pure agony and loyal fans of Norwegian extreme metal royalty Dimmu Borgir know that feeling better than most. Ever since guitarist Sven “Silenoz” Kopperud and vocalist Stian “Shagrath” Thoresen formed the band amid Norway's shadowed forestlands in 1993 - at the height of second-wave black metal's triumphant aeons - rushing the creative process has never been part of the equation. Especially since Abrahadabra (2010), Dimmu Borgir's latter-day opuses have arrived only when every last detail has been carved into place, never when trends, algorithms, or schedules demanded it. It has proven to be the right path for these northern devotees of the underworld: Dimmu Borgir's records have gone on to become all-time metal classics.Eight years after their previous studio release Eonian, Dimmu Borgir return with thirteen punishing yet remarkably diverse tracks under the banner Grand Serpent Rising on May 22, and even the sheer weight of the album title alone speaks volumes.HEAVY caught up with Silenoz to find out more, asking him to describe Grand Serpent Rising from a musical point of view and what Dimmu Borgir were going for with it."I think we've just approached it like we always approach a new album," he shrugged. "We don't really have a specific recipe in that sense. We get together with stuff that we have collected individually and basically throw it into the pot and stir around and see what brew comes out of it in the end. It's nothing more dramatical than that. But yeah, some songs needs a little bit more time than others. It all it all depends. You don't really have an off and on switch or creative button, so to speak. So you just have to try and go about it while the iron is hot, so to speak."In the full interview, Silenoz described Grand Serpent Rising's background and the band's plans around its release. He revealed the album gathers songs written over several years and that the band achieved its creative aims for this release; explaining Dimmu Borgir's process of assembling individual ideas without a fixed recipe, allowing songs to mature at different rates and intentionally showcasing the band's different eras and dynamics.The conversation covered artistic choices and practical changes. Silenoz explained the opening string-led intro for Tridentium and the decision to keep the album lengthy rather than shorten it for attention-span concerns, and noted that the title serves lyrical depth rather than denoting a title track. Interview by Kris PetersPerth based melodic death metal outfit VANTA returned with their debut full length album Perpetual Selection on March 13, a cinematic andconcept driven record that explores humanity's darker instincts through the lens of cosmic horror, mythology and dystopian sci-fi.Perpetual Selection is a sonic and visual journey inspired by Indonesian dark folklore and survival horror games to the brutal sci-fi landscapes of Dune and Warhammer 40K, transforming real world anxieties into symbolic narratives of monsters, collapse and rebirth. At its core, the album honours melodeath roots by fusing the aggression and heaviness of modern american death metal with the folkiness and melodic sway of early euro death metal.The band literally ‘breaks down' trauma, inner collapse and humanity's obsession with forces it barely understands in songs like Stillwater and Sacred Light. VANTA's creativity and experimentation in different extreme sub-genres can be heard throughout this album and is a bold statement that the pack are not afraid to push the boundaries and even make some of you...uncomfortable. As well as their sound, their art, lyrics and their symbolic music videos such as Kuyang, Empty Shells and Alchemy mirror the reality that is currently unfolding before us.HEAVY spoke with drummer Ferdi to find out more, asking him to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."We want to explore the darker side of humanity and just where we're heading in general," he began. "Like you see all the things unfolding before our eyes and just around us. Compared to our Gravemind era, we sort of like touched on that more traditional Euro mellodeath sound. Like the Gothenburg riffs, the kind of early Children Of Bodum sound, and a mix with Dahlia nuance.But with this album - because we wanted to explore more into the whole narrative about collapse and rebirth and just where the society is heading in general, we wanted something more extreme, more aggressive. And the three of us all love black metal very much. We love the early Dimmu Borgir gear, the Belphegor sort of sound, and the early Behemoth riffs. Han har vært på blokka lenge, og endelig fikk vi det til. Welcome metalheads to another episode of the great metal debate podcast. It's Xander with another back to back album review. Today, I'm probably going to be giggling a lot during this because we're talking about a parody band. Yes that's right, good old fashion spoof comedy. This band is called Dimmu Bongir which is making fun of the popular symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir. This is their brand new album titled Dark Medieval Hash which is making fun of Satyricon's debut album Dark Medieval Times. The black and white album cover even looks similar. Before I go any further, I have to point out that this band actually is from Norway. That is the one thing about this band that isn't a joke. Also, this band is basically the modern black metal equivalent of the band Cannabis Corpse. Those of you who don't know, Cannabis Corpse is a parody death metal band that makes their own original music but just takes small jabs at other classic old school death metal bands by changing around song and album titles to fit marijuana themes. The same is happening here, only its black metal and the music isn't exactly original. I just discovered this band the other day thanks to the YouTube algorithm bringing me to their music video for "A Witch is Stoned". "Bongens kammer del 1" is a two and a half minute instrumental intro track which is clearly a parody title for Dimmu Borgir's instrumental "Sorgens kammer del 1" even if I personally am more familiar with the song Sorgens kammer del 2". Ah, ok I'm looking at the track list. The final track on this album is "Bongens kammer del 2". Makes sense. I'm not really sure what "Du som røyker brunt" is supposed to be a spoof of but next we have the album title track followed by "Deathkush" which is a jab at Mayhem's "Deathcrush". "I troldskogen fyrer weed" is a parody of "Troldskog Faren Vild" by Ulver. I had to YouTube the first part of the song title to see what popped up because I'm honestly unfamiliar with Ulver. However I also have no idea what "Pipens Åpenbaring" and "Tåkeleggelse og røketrang" ... Look, I'm not fuckin Norwiegen here, I have no idea how to read or pronounce this shit. I don't know what they are supposed to be spoofs of. But the idea is still funny. I assume the word "Pipens" has to do with smoking because it sounds like the word pipe. Honestly, if I didn't know this was meant to be a comedy band, I would've never known. The music and vocals both sound great albeit nothing groundbreaking. I'm going to keep this review short since I know this band isn't meant to be taken seriously. As I already mentioned, it isn't bad but it's completely unoriginal. I'll give it a 6 out of 10. Their music is available on all streaming platforms but their physical media is completely sold out on their bandcamp page. I'm not sure if they have plans to do reprints of their "Hvis pipen tar oss" debut that has a colorized parody album cover of "For All Tid". But I don't currently see hard copies of Dark Medieval Hash or shirts available for sale.
