This is it. After 11 years and 550 episodes, Doug and Justin sit down for the final episode of Mind Gap Podcast. They open with one last "Would You Rather" (would you rather know how you die or when you die), announce that the show is moving to YouTube only going forward, and then spend the bulk of the episode reading through the tributes, memories, and messages that listeners sent in from the Discord community and social media. From there, Doug and Justin take a walk down memory lane through 11 years of the show: the guests who became lifelong friends, the legendary "Throwdown" segment that ran for over 300 episodes, and some of their favorite behind the scenes moments. They close things out with one final round of their movie quote guessing game, pulling clips from The Departed, Fight Club, Deadpool 2, Donnie Darko, and one seriously deep cut from a 1985 Christmas movie. Before signing off for good, both hosts share one last piece of advice for anyone listening: create something, be kind to the people around you, and make time for what actually matters. At the height of their power, the Ptolemaic dynasty took a great interest in the lands that lay south of the Nile Valley and the waters of the Red Sea. Explorers, elephant hunters, and mining teams travelled along the coastline as far as Somalia, providing invaluable reports about East Africa that would not be rivaled until the Medieval period. They were also able to exploit the riches of the continent, and built the infrastructure that would lead to the Indo-Mediterranean trade routes. Steve Davis surprised himself this week by liking not one but two posts from South Australian Liberal politicians, so he called in long-time political commentator Robert Godden and geopolitics expert David Olney to ask a pointed question: is Peter Malinauskas becoming the Liberal Party’s secret weapon, not by helping them, but by driving his own supporters into their arms? The verdict: Jack Batty and Ashton Hurn are operating like grown-ups in a party otherwise described as riddled with “decrepit fossils and weird cultists,” and the conversation turns to whether Malinauskas’s drift from consensus premier to contentious premier is manufacturing the very opening they need, while the Liberals themselves remain too fractured to properly capitalise on it. From there the trio put South Australia’s Health Minister through the wringer, running his saccharine response to a horror day of ambulance ramping through The Adelaide Show’s free Spin Detector tool, which diagnoses the reply as “flooding the zone with warmth” while the union’s four specific claims quietly leave the room. This episode did not include an SA Drink of the Week segment. The conversation closes on the value, or otherwise, of protest, with Robert and David comparing Sunday’s planned Stop the Chop march to the Vietnam moratorium marches and the Arab Spring, before Steve rounds out the episode with the Musical Pilgrimage: his own new ska track, For Pete’s Sake, a “streetwise, maybe slightly embittered” take on politicians who set sail from the people who elected them. Running Sheet: Is Peter Malinauskas A Liberal Party Asset? 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week There is no SA Drink Of The Week this week. 00:04:53 Robert Godden and David Olney Is Peter Malinauskas, without meaning to, building the Liberal Party’s next asset? That’s the question Steve Davis put to Robert Godden and David Olney after finding himself, against every instinct, liking videos from Bragg MP Jack Batty and Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn. Godden’s answer arrived with a caveat wrapped in a compliment: “it would have to be said that Ashton Hirne and Jack Batty have only a vague resemblance to the entire rest of the Liberal Party.” He rates them as two capable, switched-on operators surrounded by what he bluntly called “decrepit fossils and weird cultists” — but he’s blunt about where any Liberal opportunity is actually coming from. Asked whether there’s now something for the Liberals to seize, Godden pushed back hard on the framing: “I don’t agree with that… They’re riven with division,” pointing to a 40,000-signature petition against the premier as evidence that discontent is building on Labor’s own side of the ledger, not because of anything the Liberals have done. David Olney sharpened that point into a broader theory about how governing parties eventually lose the benefit of the doubt. “At a certain point, the ideology smells like five-day-old fish,” he said, and once a party in power starts breaking things badly enough, voters go looking for competent alternatives regardless of their politics. In this reading, Batty and Hurn aren’t succeeding because the Liberals have fixed themselves — they’re succeeding because Malinauskas’s own missteps are softening up his supporters and making them receptive to a Liberal alternative for the first time in years. Godden underlined how fragile even that is, noting a federal example where a promising, competent candidate “lasted six months before the rabble that has no chance of winning decided that they’d rather destroy it for themselves than destroy her.” The pair also dismantled the comfortable idea that Labor’s 41 per cent polling represents genuine popularity. As Godden put it, “if a 39, 40% is a big win these days, you know, two-thirds of people don’t actually want you there,” while Olney pushed further into theory, arguing that Australia’s compulsory voting system means elections are increasingly decided by negativity bias rather than enthusiasm: “more people reach decisions in politics not based on who I like, but on based on who I don’t like.” The implication, left hanging over the rest of the segment, is that if Malinauskas keeps generating reasons for his own base to switch off, Batty and Hurn may not need to do very much at all to become the beneficiaries. The discussion pivoted from parliamentary sparring to street-level action, with Steve Davis probing whether Sunday’s Stop the Chop march — protesting parkland clearing for a motorsport event — carries any real weight in 2026. Godden was characteristically unsentimental: “the only benefit you’ll get out of this march is, is publicity, and continuing to maybe foment more anger in the community, because 40,000 quite angry people won’t get it there.” Olney offered the historical counterpoint that protest’s real value in the 1960s wasn’t its immediate political impact but the fact that it taught a generation “relearning collective action, relearning organisation, relearning holding their political leaders to account” — skills he argues have atrophied in a population that has “shrunk into our little black screens.” That theme of decline without a single dramatic collapse ran through the episode’s most striking tangent, when Olney cited historians’ work dating the fall of Rome not to the sacking of the city but to the point where the empire “stopped solving more than half of its problems every year” — a shift he places somewhere between 112 and 142 CE, and which he half-jokingly maps onto Australia’s own trajectory from around 1980. Godden couldn’t resist the follow-up: does that make Malinauskas South Australia’s Trajan? “Yeah, basically,” Olney replied, before noting the state is still waiting on its Marcus Aurelius. 00:45:30 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage this week we listen to Pete’s Sake by Steve Davis & The Virtualosos. For this episode’s musical pilgrimage, Steve Davis premieres his own composition rather than paying tribute to another artist: “For Pete’s Sake,” a comedic ska track from Steve Davis and The Virtuosos, built to fuse the genre’s “upbeat, zany” energy with pointed commentary on the state government’s parklands and MotoGP saga. The song was directly inspired by the premier’s choice of language toward protesters, whom he has variously labelled “ragtag extremists” and “cultural elites,” a framing Davis skewers by noting the real elite will likely be sipping champagne in the “exclusive money can’t buy VIP areas” at the racetrack itself. We have reached the end of Fantastic Four...Again. It is not your imagination, this is not a drill, this is not a test. At the end of every run, it seems to be a big conclusion story, and this run by James Robinson does not seem to be any different. So, this is a big old book, and we are two big old men. Here...we...go...... When my co-host got around to finally reading this book, he was shocked. He was not expecting so many pages. He also was not expecting me to change all of the light bulbs in his house to blue colored ones and to turn his computer screen to red. He never expected me to break into his house and replace all of his furniture with cardboard. I also programmed his phone to identify me as "Daddy" and him as an "Evil Jerk". Mostly because later I wanted to surprise him and say, "Who's your daddy know?". Later I realized that this was creepy. Still, pretty good joke. Later, I sent a team of super-villains to attack him while he was doing yard work. My original plan was to send them while he was sleeping, but then I saw that the cost for them to attack at night was much higher. I took the matinee discount. The best thing that I did was to hire a team of drone operators that had modified their drones to shoot fire. Some people might call it unethical or dangerous, but I just call it the next step in the evolution for our destruction...and pretty cool. This firebug team did multiple flybys of his home in the middle of the night, causing a bit of panic. It was awesome. After the family was outside, I had the drones make a rude gesture in the sky. I mean, why not, amiright? If you are going all out, you might as well be juvenile about it. Needless to say, Jeff punched me. Man, he cannot take a joke. Doug saw The Odyssey on opening weekend. Justin saw it the following Wednesday in IMAX 70mm. They both walked out saying the same thing: that is cinema at its finest. The full review is here. Justin's IMAX 70mm experience gets the full breakdown first. Every frame deliberately composed, the sheer amount of visual information on screen, the walk back to see the giant film spools running the projector. Then the film itself: what Nolan got right about scale, spectacle, and practical effects. The Cyclops was built using a combination of a massive puppet for the actors to work around and a real actor in full prosthetics and makeup on a scaled-down set, composited together the old-school way. The giants were played by actual seven-foot-tall people standing next to a stunt double under five feet tall. No CGI shortcut. No painted-in crowd. A thousand extras on the day they shot the Land of the Dead. Jon Bernthal in the water for half a day, approaching hypothermia, refusing to come out until they had the shot. Also in this episode: a significant announcement. Mind Gap Podcast is ending at Episode 550. The world-building concept is that at age eighteen you put your hand on a stone and get assigned your permanent class, whether that is a farmer, a bard, an accountant, or a banned necromancer on the run from the government. This leads to a conversation about what class each host would want to be awakened into. Doug says cook. Justin says Urban Explorer, which is not a real class in the book but seems accurate. The Urban Dictionary game returns. This round covers Mickey Mousing, Eternity Leave, Werewolf's Dick, and Ottawa Spaghetti. Justin gets closer than expected on most of them. We are in the thick of it. The penultimate issue of this run. Fights occurring, punches throwing, dreams invading, words writing, etcetera ectering. This is a book with both pictures and words. There is plot, there is development. There is a podcaster who is struggling to write on a Monday morning. There is a problem. And when there is a problem, you need a team to deal with it. Assembling your team is important and vital. You should be careful in choosing, or else you will get stuck with a throwaway 90's character. And nobody wants that to happen. When putting your team together, first impressions are everything. You should think about how you present and introduce yourself. Hugging your interviewer during the meeting process is not a good start. Fighting with your team is good. Fighting against your team is bad. Know the difference. You should know how to pose for team photos. Some say teamwork, some say power compatibility, I say it is all about how you all strut. You need balance or an understanding of lead and support. You need to show power, to be power. After your team has successfully mastered posing in front of a camera, and testing your super-powers at least once, you should be ready to face an evil super villain. Go big or go home. Either way, you will probably go home in a box, but you will look good doing it. Alternatively, you can just do it all yourself and smack fools. Gather your team, and listen to our podcast. The Avengers Doomsday trailer dropped this week and Doug has already watched it four times. The full reaction is here: what landed, what it means for the MCU, why the Russos coming back gives genuine reason for optimism, and why Thor not cracking a single joke in the entire trailer is one of the most promising signs this movie is going somewhere real. The biggest moments get the full breakdown. Captain America's return and the Mjolnir handoff. RDJ as Doctor Doom and the most logical in-universe explanation for why he looks exactly like Tony Stark. The Loki TVA card and whether the average viewer has any idea what that means. Shang-Chi showing up despite not appearing in a single piece of Marvel content since 2021. The Fantastic Four's involvement. Gambit getting a moment that made a 10-year-old lose her mind. And the theory that this film is essentially Marvel's version of Secret Wars, a way of pruning timelines, retiring legacy characters, and rebooting the X-Men in a way that actually makes sense. Speaking of the X-Men, Doug and Natalie watched all five original Fox X-Men films over the weekend specifically to prepare for Doomsday. Gambling, specifically the rise of sports betting apps and why that cottage industry is genuinely sinister. Posting everything on social media compulsively. And the hokey pokey. Doug's daughter watched all four Hunger Games films in the span of about a week, and her takeaways were something else entirely. During the emotional final scene of Mockingjay Part Two, while Katniss and Peeta are shown living out a quiet life with their children, her primary concern was the gender of a background baby who has approximately three seconds of screen time and zero bearing on anything. She also forgot what propaganda meant two minutes after Doug explained it, needed a full pause-and-debrief when Johanna Mason got naked in an elevator, and spent a significant portion of Catching Fire asking questions that the movie was about to answer on its own. Doug is coping. The full debrief covers what she liked, what confused her, what she's going to ask about Se7en when the time comes ("What's lust, Dad?"), and the ever-growing list of films Doug is planning to work through with her next. Jaws, the full X-Men series, Knives Out, and eventually Deadpool when she's old enough to understand the references. Before that: the episode opens with a butthole tattoo guessing game where each host picks which of six illustrated designs they would choose, and Doug correctly identifies Justin's pick on the first try. Many Sublime songs are workshopped for thematic accuracy. Several are surprisingly applicable. Justin explains why the Sublime Sun is the objectively correct answer and cannot be argued with. Then: two embarrassing social moments that have been living rent free. Doug told his daughter's softball coach "I walk by your house all the time" while shaking his hand goodbye and has spent 48 hours replaying it. Justin misunderstood his neighbor's yard waste bin request, said "anytime buddy," walked inside, closed the door, and watched from the window as his neighbor retrieved the bin himself. Neither man will be recovering soon. Also: Marvel Rivals gave Captain America a summer skin with a historically significant bulge that had to be patched. Doug pulls up the before photo for viewers. It is substantial. The word "nerfed" was used in a sentence and everyone understood what it meant. Then the new game: Doug pulls Urban Dictionary terms including Canon Event, 404 Coded, Soft Blocking IRL, Noodle Groove, and Oil Up, and Justin has to figure out what they mean. Justin's definition of Noodle Groove involves falling asleep face down on sand and being dragged by his friends. It is not correct. It is better. This week's recommendations: Justin — Project Hail Mary (HBO Max). Not the movie he expected going in. Fantastic anyway. Go watch it immediately. Doug — Book of the Dead by Ringo Z. A LitRPG series about an 18-year-old given the outlawed Necromancer class at his awakening ceremony, now on the run from authorities while learning dark magic alone. Five books in the series. Some would say that this comic represents the real life, not just fantasy. We are going to open your eyes to see that Franklin is just powerful boy, whose entire family loves. These are all fine questions, and the answers are easy come, and easy go. What does Namor think? Just that it is too late, his time has come. Shivers rune down his spine, body's aching all the time. He wants to say goodbye everybody, he's got to go. He has to leave them all behind and face the truth. Rick Sheridan really does not care any way the wind blows. The Thing is very straight forward. He just sees a little silhouetto of a man. Ben wants to do the Fandango. He wants thunderbolt and lightning. The Thing wants to be very, very frightening. And dear Dragonman and Alex.
