Doug saw The Odyssey on opening weekend. Justin saw it the following Wednesday in IMAX 70mm. They both walked out saying the same thing: that is cinema at its finest. The full review is here. Justin's IMAX 70mm experience gets the full breakdown first. Every frame deliberately composed, the sheer amount of visual information on screen, the walk back to see the giant film spools running the projector. Then the film itself: what Nolan got right about scale, spectacle, and practical effects. The Cyclops was built using a combination of a massive puppet for the actors to work around and a real actor in full prosthetics and makeup on a scaled-down set, composited together the old-school way. The giants were played by actual seven-foot-tall people standing next to a stunt double under five feet tall. No CGI shortcut. No painted-in crowd. A thousand extras on the day they shot the Land of the Dead. Jon Bernthal in the water for half a day, approaching hypothermia, refusing to come out until they had the shot. Also in this episode: a significant announcement. Mind Gap Podcast is ending at Episode 550. Steve opens with a pop quiz: name a South Australian product that just outscored Glenmorangie, Highland Park and a 31-year-old Crown Royal at a fraction of the price. It’s whiskey, specifically Renmark’s 23rd Street Distillery, freshly named Australian Distillery of the Year at the New York International Spirits Competition, with their single malt scoring 96 points against entries from 39 countries. Head distiller Paul Burnett, returning for another visit, credits the win to restraint rather than showmanship: a low-level peat profile, around half a percent in the finished blend, used as what he calls a “complexing agent,” paired with an unusually wide range of cask finishes, from first-fill bourbon barrels to old tawny, muscat and Tokay casks. Steve, tasting alongside him, works through notes of honeyed fruit, fig, all-spice and a citrus edge that shifts as the glass warms in his hand, while Paul walks through the distinction between “heads, hearts and tails” in distillation and how the team’s small-batch, six-way finishing blend has quietly shifted in proportion release after release. The pair also compare notes on serving it right: a proper tulip glass, a touch of water, room temperature rather than ice, and, in Paul’s case, a slice of chocolate or nuts alongside it. Steve, for his part, admits an evening spent testing whiskey sours and old fashioneds the night before only confirmed his preference for drinking it neat. 00:35:20 Mark Rowland and Adelaide Climate Action Week Steve opens by declaring his hand: he uses AI daily for work, has solar and a battery, drives an EV, and admits the more he learns about what sits behind that lifestyle, the less smug he gets to feel about it. It’s a fitting frame for a conversation built around nuance rather than tribal certainty. Mark explains why Adelaide Climate Action Week chose an actual Oxford-style debate over a polite panel discussion, tapping into people’s competitive instincts to get them to actually take a position rather than scroll through it. The audience voted before and after: undecided voters dropped from 24% to single digits, and belief that AI will be a net negative for climate rose from 56% to over 70%. The real story, though, was in the follow-up conversations, where the deciding factor wasn’t the argument itself but the time horizon people used. Ask about the next five years and the mood turns pessimistic; ask about 20 to 50 years out and people start to believe things will improve. The pair dig into the “carbon glutton” case, distinguishing AI-specific energy demand from data centres in general, since cloud storage and streaming were already drawing power long before AI arrived. Mark points out that air conditioning, EV charging and industrial electrification are all expected to outgrow AI’s energy demands in the years ahead, and that steel and concrete for data centre construction already account for roughly 14% of global emissions. He also raises a genuinely alarming case: a data centre approval in an African nation that led authorities to cut off a village’s water supply, with fatal consequences, the kind of guardrail failure he says South Australia needs to avoid as its own data centre legislation opens the door to rapid growth. On the more optimistic “silicon saviour” side, Mark describes a proposed Barossa data centre project that would generate two to three times the renewable energy it needs, feed the surplus back into the community, and capture atmospheric moisture from its waste heat to supply water to nearby farmers and wineries, reducing pressure on the Murray. He frames this as “hybrid intelligence” in action: letting machines handle the split-second optimisation work, like grid load-shifting to squeeze more renewables in without new poles and wires, while humans retain the judgement calls machines aren’t suited to. Steve presses on the Jevons paradox, the pattern where efficiency gains simply invite greater use rather than genuine savings, and confesses to his own sprawling AI toolkit, from Claude to NotebookLM to Suno. Mark’s response is refreshingly proportionate: an individual’s prompt volume is negligible against industrial-scale use, and Google’s own sustainability reporting shows the energy and water cost per prompt has dropped by roughly half in a couple of years, even as overall usage climbs. The conversation lands on the “time value of carbon,” the idea that AI’s emissions are happening now while its promised climate benefits, if they arrive at all, are speculative and delayed. It closes with Mark’s own conviction, shaped by a master’s degree in climate change, that humanity’s Anthropocene-era warming is real, drawn partly from personal memory of snow days in his native England that simply don’t happen anymore. Asked to leave listeners with something to hold onto, Mark returns to a theme James Clear would recognise from Atomic Habits: start with the smallest available step. Downloading rather than streaming a favourite album, watching YouTube at 720p instead of 4K on a phone, deleting old emails sitting in a data centre somewhere: none of it solves the problem alone, but it restores a sense of agency against the temptation to slide into overwhelm or apathy. We are in the thick of it. The penultimate issue of this run. Fights occurring, punches throwing, dreams invading, words writing, etcetera ectering. This is a book with both pictures and words. There is plot, there is development. There is a podcaster who is struggling to write on a Monday morning. There is a problem. And when there is a problem, you need a team to deal with it. Assembling your team is important and vital. You should be careful in choosing, or else you will get stuck with a throwaway 90's character. And nobody wants that to happen. When putting your team together, first impressions are everything. You should think about how you present and introduce yourself. Hugging your interviewer during the meeting process is not a good start. Fighting with your team is good. Fighting against your team is bad. Know the difference. You should know how to pose for team photos. Some say teamwork, some say power compatibility, I say it is all about how you all strut. You need balance or an understanding of lead and support. You need to show power, to be power. After your team has successfully mastered posing in front of a camera, and testing your super-powers at least once, you should be ready to face an evil super villain. Go big or go home. Either way, you will probably go home in a box, but you will look good doing it. Alternatively, you can just do it all yourself and smack fools. Gather your team, and listen to our podcast. Doug's daughter watched all four Hunger Games films in the span of about a week, and her takeaways were something else entirely. During the emotional final scene of Mockingjay Part Two, while Katniss and Peeta are shown living out a quiet life with their children, her primary concern was the gender of a background baby who has approximately three seconds of screen time and zero bearing on anything. She also forgot what propaganda meant two minutes after Doug explained it, needed a full pause-and-debrief when Johanna Mason got naked in an elevator, and spent a significant portion of Catching Fire asking questions that the movie was about to answer on its own. Doug is coping. The full debrief covers what she liked, what confused her, what she's going to ask about Se7en when the time comes ("What's lust, Dad?"), and the ever-growing list of films Doug is planning to work through with her next. Jaws, the full X-Men series, Knives Out, and eventually Deadpool when she's old enough to understand the references. Before that: the episode opens with a butthole tattoo guessing game where each host picks which of six illustrated designs they would choose, and Doug correctly identifies Justin's pick on the first try. Many Sublime songs are workshopped for thematic accuracy. Several are surprisingly applicable. Justin explains why the Sublime Sun is the objectively correct answer and cannot be argued with. Then: two embarrassing social moments that have been living rent free. Doug told his daughter's softball coach "I walk by your house all the time" while shaking his hand goodbye and has spent 48 hours replaying it. Justin misunderstood his neighbor's yard waste bin request, said "anytime buddy," walked inside, closed the door, and watched from the window as his neighbor retrieved the bin himself. Neither man will be recovering soon. Also: Marvel Rivals gave Captain America a summer skin with a historically significant bulge that had to be patched. Doug pulls up the before photo for viewers. It is substantial. The word "nerfed" was used in a sentence and everyone understood what it meant. Then the new game: Doug pulls Urban Dictionary terms including Canon Event, 404 Coded, Soft Blocking IRL, Noodle Groove, and Oil Up, and Justin has to figure out what they mean. Justin's definition of Noodle Groove involves falling asleep face down on sand and being dragged by his friends. It is not correct. It is better. This week's recommendations: Justin — Project Hail Mary (HBO Max). Not the movie he expected going in. Fantastic anyway. Go watch it immediately. Doug — Book of the Dead by Ringo Z. A LitRPG series about an 18-year-old given the outlawed Necromancer class at his awakening ceremony, now on the run from authorities while learning dark magic alone. Five books in the series. Justin has one free movie pass left before the month ends and needs to use it tonight, so Doug helps him choose between Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and Masters of the Universe. This somehow turns into a 45-minute deep dive on everything happening in Hollywood right now, and honestly, it's one of the best movie conversations they've had in a while. First: the online hate for Supergirl is examined, dissected, and found to be exactly what everyone already knows it is. Same goes for the discourse around casting in The Odyssey, the Little Mermaid live action, and Dune. The pattern is not subtle and Doug has words. Then things get genuinely interesting. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is coming and Doug is all the way in — Greek mythology, massive ensemble cast (Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliott Page), and the first narrative film ever shot entirely on IMAX cameras. The IMAX conversation goes somewhere unexpected. Spider-Man Brand New Day gets the full breakdown: the Punisher's role, what the One Last Kill special means for his arc, and why having Frank Castle in a PG-13 Spider-Man movie is either brilliant or insane depending on how you look at it. Then: Avengers Doomsday. Are Doug and Justin cautiously optimistic or quietly terrified? Both. RDJ as Doctor Doom, the Jonathan Majors pivot, what the comics actually did with colliding dimensions, and why the Magneto limited series is the template they should be following. Plus, Marvel forgot Shang-Chi exists. It has been four years. Someone needs to answer for this. Also: Jared Leto — what happened? A genuine conversation about acting as a craft, why celebrity corrupts the thing that made people good at it, and how a handcrafted maple dresser at a consignment store connects to all of it somehow. Then: Doug and Justin review Backrooms (A24). Justin gives it three stars. Doug is closer to three and a half. They agree the production design is stunning, the acting is strong, the jump scares land, and the story leaves too many character motivations unresolved. A making-of documentary is urgently needed. Also also: Million Dollar Nannies on Hulu is a show that exists. Beth found it. They did not make it past the intro. And a brief, uncomfortable look at Love Island, reality TV, and why some people unwind by watching train wrecks. Movie audio clip guessing game: Justin goes three for three on Hook, Elvis (Baz Luhrmann), and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective — including a line from Ace Ventura that lands very differently as an adult than it did at age ten. This week's recommendations: Justin — Backrooms (A24). Not perfect, but worth seeing. The environment alone justifies the ticket price. Doug — Mecha Chameleon on Steam. Six dollars.
