Are you on board to join Jeff Bezos as a tourist in outer space? It may take a while to hit the mainstream, but in the meantime, scientists and Intergalactic Travel Bureau members Olivia Koski and Jana Grcevich have teamed up to create an illustrated guide for your trip. Publisher’s Weekly calls it “An ideal introduction to the solar system for younger readers and casual space fans who crave an imaginative trip into the possibilities of real space tourism.” They encourage readers to imagine taking a hike along the windswept red plains of Mars to dig for signs of life, or touring one of Jupiter’s sixty-four moons where you can photograph its swirling storms. With four-color illustrations and packed with real-world science, The Vacation Guide to the Solar System covers all of the essentials for the voyage including how to get there, and what to do when you arrive. A sneak peek of the real thing, Koski and Grcevich take you on a virtual tour of the galaxy. Recorded live at Town Hall Seattle Monday, June 12, 2017
The solar system is full of many wondrous sights, perfect for any vacation and you can already start planning you next trip. On this episode, Jana Grcevich and Olivia Koski discussed their vacation guide to the solar system.
This episode, we go on another vacation! Can you tell I need a vacation? Anyway, back to the episode. What would it be like if you could hop on a space cruise ship, and take a trip to Mars? This is a special episode because our little future intro is actually two real people playing real parts. Olivia Koski and Jana Grcevich are the authors of a new book called Vacation Guide to the Solar System. The book is a spinoff of their long-running project the Intergalactic Travel Bureau, a project of Guerilla Science and a place where people could really come inside and ask about trips to other planets. And they take us on a very fun tour of what you could do, as a tourist, to Mars. Along with Olivia and Jana, this episode features Ben Longmier, a former rocket scientist, and Rebecca Boyle, a science writer who has a true love for Mars. There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to intergalactic travel, so in this episode we focus specifically on tourism. Not colonization, or research, or any of the other things that you could potentially try to do. And we’re also going to focus on a single planet, just because trying to cover all the planets would be really hard. So what would it be like, to take a vacation to Mars. Just… a trip for fun. Like going to Cancun. But instead of snorkeling you hike up Olympus Mons? Listen to find out!
