He has been married to Lindsay for 40 years and has three grown-up children and five grandchildren. His life changed significantly when Lindsay died suddenly nearly two years ago. Steve was a client of mine for several years following the heartbreaking, sudden and unexpected loss of his Lindsay. Steve's journey through grief is exemplary because he diligently put himself out to understand grief, to learn to live with it and integrate the loss of his companion of a lifetime into a meaningful life. I invited him to share his story because it offers much insight. When we began working together, Steve was recently widowed. From the beginning, he wanted to grow not because of his loss but despite it and embrace life yet again. Over the time we worked together, I've had the privilege of witnessing his incredible transformation—how he embraced his own grief and walked alongside the grief of his three adult children. We worked through the difficult emotions, and he ultimately rebuilt his life in a way that honors his late wife's memory while also opening himself up to new love.Support the showFind support: Transforming Your Grief Course Support the show: Become a supporter of the show! There are practical principles and steps that have been proven to work that integrate principles from recovery, wellness, psychology, neuroscience, and personal development that can not only help people live life better but to also prevent or lessen the impact of behavioral health issues. We also have a strong focus on helping families by reaching parents and other caregivers as well as each individual in the family In Steve Ward's words: I struggled with alcoholism and other members of my family dealt with substance abuse, mental health issues, and other problems as well. But I saw there are proven ways to not only prevent behavioral health issues but to live life better. Steve Ward has been fascinated by the unexplained for over half a century. There were two major events that inspired his interest in the unexplained.Growing up in Michigan, the March 1966 UFO flap occurred virtually in his backyard. The following November a winged humanoid chased two couples down a lonely country road near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The legend of the Mothman was born.Steve would be chasing the Mothman the rest of his life. Influenced primarily by John Keel and Jacques Vallee, his views on UFOs became unconventional and moved more toward a more paranormal explanation.Steve's main area of research is, what some call "high strangeness" or "window areas" (as Keel dubbed them) where disparate types of paranormal phenomena all seem to occur in the same location, and he believes that studying these paranormally active locations may be the key to understanding what the origin behind these manifestations may be.He has his own podcast called The High Strangeness Factor on the Paranormal UK Radio Network, and is a correspondent on Mack Maloney's Military X-Files, which can be found on that same network. Website: http://www.paukradio.com/Steve currently lives in Point Pleasant, West Virginia & works at The Mothman Museum. He is also writing a book as yet untitled that deals with the underlying patterns that connect different types of Paranormal Phenomena throughout history.Steve returns to Talking Weird to chat with Dean about the "Summer of the Saucers", that season of the first modern UFO wave. Kicked off (at least in the press) by Kenneth Arnold's sighting of nine strange craft flying in formation near Mount Rainier, Washington, on June 24, 1947. This famous sighting was then compounded with saucer report after saucer report, including multiple influential UFO incidents from Maury Island to Roswell.Dean will also be chatting about his recent visit to Maury Island for the 77th anniversary of its UFO incident. Like Kenneth Arnold's sighting, the event at Maury Island was heavily publicized by Raymond A. Palmer. And via Palmer's publications, it spawned multiple facets of modern UFO lore: From UFO crashes, through government coverups, to the mysterious Men in Black!Do not miss this insightful and fascinating conversation about history's most significant UFO wave.

"My goal for SSLLC is to have a company that doesn't provide stress to somebody's home life or them personally. So the only way that can happen is to teach leadership and lean into those stresses {to find a solution}..." Join Devon as he chats with Scott Sypniewski Sr. & Jr. about leadership! SSLLC was founded on August 1, 2021, by Scott and Kathleen Sypniewski. Scott and Katheen operated a plumbing business in Chicago, from 2000-2018, while raising 4 children. Scott grew up in his father's multifamily plumbing business. In 2018, as their youngest was graduating high school, Scott and Kathleen gave their business to a trusted employee and moved to Colorado. In May of 2021, Scott read the book Extreme Ownership. The book impacted his life and gave him the knowledge necessary to run a large scale business. When the opportunity was presented in July of 2021, Scott was ready for the challenge. With the support of Kathleen, they formed SSLLC and began to assemble their team. As of April 2024, SSLLC has 20 people on their management team and 50 plumbers. Extreme Ownership has provided the foundation for success. They have built a strong culture that people believe in. That foundation allows them to develop processes that structure their operation, i.e., project manuals, 3 week look a heads, quarterly customer reviews, QA/QC implementation and implemented safety procedures, to name a few.  A testimonial from their Leadership coach and advisor, Marcus Aurelius Anderson: “Working with SSLLC as a Leadership Advisor over the last year, I can say that I've never seen a company that genuinely values culture as much as SSLLC. Their employees don't just talk the talk, they walk the walk and lead by example daily. They've made culture the cornerstone of all they do, it's the foundation upon which they've built everything from the ground up. There are plenty of companies that say how important cultivating relationships, caring for their people, and culture are but then fall flat when it comes time to execute. SSLLC has used extreme ownership and self leadership to be great problem solvers through teamwork, simplicity, prioritizing execution, and building every member of the company into better leaders. All of these skills have made SSLLC a tremendously successful company in a short amount of time.” A testimonial from the leadership group, Echelon Front: One of the things I really respect about SSLLC plumbing is that they're consistently looking for ways to improve as leaders.  A good leader understands that you must make time to educate and train your team, this starts with the leaders making time to educate and train themselves.  One of the areas the SSLLC leadership team is very strong in is continuing to develop as leaders and most importantly taking action with implementing this same concept with their team. A really good attribute with any leader is having an open mind to new ways of doing things or different perspectives, The Sypniewski's are always open minded with new ideas and concepts, especially when it comes to taking care of their team and people. ~ Steve Ward. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register, dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something".  The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States. The source of the legend is believed to have originated from sightings of out-of-migration sandhill cranes or herons. The creature was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970, and was later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that there were paranormal events related to the sightings, and a connection to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The book was later adapted into a 2002 film, starring Richard Gere.[ History On November 15, 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant—Roger and Linda Scarberry, and Steve and Mary Mallette—told police they had seen a large black creature whose eyes "glowed red", standing at the side of the road near "the TNT area", the site of a former World War II munitions plant. Linda Scarberry described it as a "slender, muscular man" about seven feet tall with white wings, and said that she was unable to discern its face due to the hypnotic effect of its eyes. Distressed, the witnesses drove away at high speed, and said that the creature flew after their car, making a screeching sound. It pursued them as far as Point Pleasant city limits. During the next few days, other people reported similar sightings, after local newspapers reported it. Two volunteer firemen who saw it said it was a "large bird with red eyes". Mason County Sheriff George Johnson commented that he believed the sightings were due to an unusually large heron he termed a "shitepoke". Contractor Newell Partridge told Johnson that when he aimed a flashlight at a creature in a nearby field, its eyes glowed "like bicycle reflectors". Additionally, he blamed buzzing noises from his television set and the disappearance of his German Shepherd dog on the creature. Wildlife biologist Robert L. Smith at West Virginia University told reporters that descriptions and sightings all fit the sandhill crane, a large American crane almost as tall as a man with a seven-foot wingspan featuring circles of reddish coloring around the eyes. The bird may have wandered out of its migration route, and therefore was unrecognized at first because it was not native to this region. Due to the popularity of the Batman TV series at the time, the fictional superhero Batman and his rogues gallery were prominently featured in the public eye. While the villain Killer Moth did not appear in the show, the comic book influence of both him and Batman is believed by some to have influenced the coinage of the name "Mothman" in the local newspapers. Following the December 15, 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge and the death of 46 people, the incident gave rise to the legend and connected the Mothman sightings to the bridge collapse. According to Georgian newspaper Svobodnaya Gruziya, Russian UFOlogists claim that Mothman sightings in Moscow foreshadowed the 1999 Russian apartment bombings. The Mothman Prophecies (2002) is a major motion picture, loosely based on the 1975 book of the same name by John Keel. In 2016, WCHS-TV published a photo purported to be of Mothman taken by an anonymous man while driving on Route 2 in Mason County. Science writer Sharon A. Hill proposed that the photo showed "a bird, perhaps an owl, carrying a frog or snake away" and wrote that "there is zero reason to suspect it is the Mothman as described in legend. There are too many far more reasonable explanations."
