#761 What if growing your home service business slower is actually the fastest path to profit and freedom? In this episode, host Brien Gearin sits down with returning guest Mike Andes, founder of Augusta Lawn Care, to break down how home service businesses can grow without getting crushed by seasonality, overhead, or the “bigger is better” trap. Mike shares his origin story (including starting college at 13!), then dives into his practical “off-season cures” (from winter services to inverse-demand add-ons like holiday lights), how pay-for-performance compensation can drive speed and quality with the right guardrails, and why open-book management + profit sharing can align the whole team like owners. They also unpack Mike's “Copy + Paste” growth philosophy — focusing on profitability and smart capacity limits before scaling locations — plus why many operators would be better off raising prices and reducing ad dependency than endlessly chasing more revenue! What we discuss with Mike: + Solving the off-season + Five “cures” for seasonality + Winter services & subscriptions + Inverse demand add-on services + Pay-for-performance pay model + Quality control & “yellow slips” + Open-book management basics + Profit sharing incentives + Copy-and-paste growth strategy + Raising prices vs. chasing growth Thank you, Mike! Most people spend their lives chasing happiness yet end up miserable. In this episode of The Impossible Life Podcast, Garrett and Nick flip the script using inverse thinking to expose 10 decisions that almost guarantee a broken, unhappy life. Inspired by the philosophies of Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett, this episode shows that sometimes the fastest path to wisdom is learning what not to do.You'll hear why making life all about yourself leads to emptiness, how chronic complaining drains momentum, why refusing to take risks kills potential, and how neglecting self-development, health, and belief sabotages your future. Garrett breaks down how belief systems shape outcomes, why confidence and risk are inseparable, and how consuming more than you create slowly erodes purpose and fulfillment. The episode culminates with the two most destructive choices of all: loving yourself more than God, and never developing a deep, lifelong relationship with Him. If you want to avoid regret, live with meaning, and build a life that actually works, this episode gives you a clear warning sign for every major pitfall—and shows you how to walk the opposite path toward purpose, faith, and strength.Join a group of likeminded Impossible Life listeners in our FREE Skool community by clicking here.Get the Purpose Playbook by clicking hereGet the FREE Basic Discipline Training 30 Day Program by clicking hereJoin us in Mindset Mastery by clicking hereIf you're a man that wants real accountability and training to be a leader, click here.Level up your nutrition with IDLife by clicking hereGET IN TOUCHSocial Media - @theimpossiblelifeEmail - info@theimpossible.life
Adam Morgan discusses his new biography, A Danger to the Minds of Young Girls: Margaret C. Anderson, Book Bans, and the Fight to Modernize Literature (Atria/One Signal Publishers, 2025). Morgan's book is the first biography solely devoted to Margaret C. Anderson, the founder of the avant-garde literary and arts magazine The Little Review, which she began publishing in Chicago in 1914. The influential Little Review showcased many famous writers of its time, including T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, Hart Crane, Sherwood Anderson and Hemingway. But it would become most celebrated—and notorious—for being the first publisher of James Joyce's towering modernist novel Ulysses. After putting out nearly two thirds of the novel in serial installments from 1918 through 1920, Margaret Anderson and her romantic partner and co-editor Jane Heap were charged and found guilty of obscenity under the Comstock Act for distributing Joyce's sexually frank passages through the mail. They were deemed "a danger to the minds of young girls." A Danger to the Minds of Young Girls tells a very compelling story of an iconoclastic woman who was determined to make a space for difficult and challenging art and whose efforts changed forever what could be addressed in literature and what could be considered beautiful. Adam Morgan is himself the founder of the indispensable Chicago Review of Books, and a great promoter of the literature of our city. We are especially thrilled to be having this conversation now, as we just began a six-month discussion group on Ulysses at our library. Listen to hear why Ulysses wouldn't exist without Chicago and how understanding Anderson's life helps reveal the true stakes, triumphs, and world-changing "dangers" of James Joyce's masterpiece. Adam Morgan is a culture journalist and critic who lives near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His writing has appeared in Esquire, WIRED, Scientific American, Inverse, The Paris Review, Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. He writes a newsletter about forthcoming books called The Frontlist. He is the founding editor of the Chicago Review of Books, the Southern Review of Books, and the Chicago Literary Archive. You can check out A Danger to the Minds of Young Girls in our Podcast Collection, featuring books and other materials by past guests of the show. Find out more about Adam Morgan at his website. What sets our Creation story—and our God—apart from others from around the world?
As we now turn to Genesis 8, we find Noah and his family still on the ark. In this episode, we'll think about what it would have been like to be on the ark for over a year, waiting for word from God. It wouldn't have been easy. And yet, as we look at Noah and his example, we find a man of faith who waited upon the Lord. Join us for our next study in the Key Chapters of God's Word! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. In Verse 1 God remembered Noah. How does the study explain what this phrase means? When we compare verse 1 with verse 15, how frequently did the study suggest the Lord was in direct communication with Noah? What do you think life on the ark would have been like for Noah and his family? 2. Noah was on the ark a lot longer than 40 days. According to the study, approximately how long was he and his family on the ark? What does this tell us about his patience and trust in the Lord? 3. Why do you think Noah didn't leave the ark in verse 13 once the ark rested on dry ground? 4. What did Noah do when he got off the ark? Why do you think he did this? Would you have done this? What does this indicate about Noah's character? 5. In verse 21, the Lord promises to never again curse the ground on account of man. Does this mean the curse is over? How did the study explain the word for "curse" here in verse 21, versus the word "curse" back in Genesis 3:17? 6. In verse 21, the Lord says the intent of man's heart is evil from his youth. Has man's heart condition changed since Genesis 6:5? What does this show us about God's mercy? 7. According to the study, what was the purpose of the flood? Was it to reform man? Or was it for something else? 8. In verse 21, the Lord promises to never again destroy every living thing in the manner He has done. What is this an inherent promise to provide? 9. What are the two key promises recorded in Genesis 8:21-22 and Genesis 3:15? How are these promises fulfilled in Christ? How can you trust in these promises, even today? If the word sales makes you tense up, this episode is about to change everything. In this conversation, sales expert Adam Cerra breaks down why most solopreneurs struggle with selling, and it's not because they're bad at it. It's because they've been taught the wrong mindset. Instead of “closing,” Adam introduces inverse closing, a way to turn sales calls into guided conversations where prospects sell themselves without pressure, manipulation, or feeling salesy. You'll learn how to stop pricing your time and start pricing your wisdom, how to run discovery calls that feel collaborative (not awkward), and how to follow up without chasing or feeling desperate. Whether you're booking your first calls or already selling high-ticket services, this episode gives you practical, confidence-boosting shifts you can apply immediately.Episode FAQsWhat is inverse closing, and why does it work for solopreneurs?Inverse closing is a sales approach where the solopreneur acts as an assessor rather than a closer. Instead of pitching, you guide the prospect to articulate their own needs and reasons for buying. This works especially well for solopreneurs because it removes pressure, builds trust, and aligns sales with service, making conversations feel natural and collaborative. How can solopreneurs stop feeling “salesy” on discovery calls?Solopreneurs stop sounding salesy when they shift from trying to convince someone to helping them self-evaluate. By asking thoughtful, emotionally driven questions and listening deeply, the call becomes a guided conversation instead of a pitch. This approach positions the solopreneur as a trusted authority, not a persuader. What's the best follow-up strategy if a prospect doesn't buy on the first call? Most prospects don't buy on the first call, and that's normal. A strong follow-up strategy treats the second call as a continuation—not a chase. By maintaining leadership, referencing prior conversations, and removing urgency pressure, solopreneurs can increase conversions without sounding needy or desperate.

PTA loosely adapts (and updates) Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland, setting the story against the backdrop of an indeterminate moment in the 21st century to tell a story of washed-up revolutionary Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is dragged back into the fray when an old enemy (Sean Penn) resurfaces and threatens his teenage daughter (Chase Infiniti). The film represents the first time in over 20 years that Anderson has set a story in contemporary times, and he uses the opportunity to examine the current landscape of America, its political fissures, and to lay out his personal vision of a hopeful future staked out by the next generation...But Anderson also readily betrays the limits of his political vision, and his myopic understanding of the circumstances that have produced and perpetuated this country's bigotries and oppressive hierarchies. While One Battle After Another offers countless pleasures as an obeject of undeniable cinematic energy and craftsmanship, it fails to elucidate a coherent sociopolitical ideology, even as it readily co-opts and aestheticizes the langauge and iconography of radical leftwing militancy. We unpack the film's many contradictions, and key in to what makes OBAA a simultaneously riveting and frustrating watch. Then, we discuss the film's treatment of race and the cadre of brilliant Black actresses who mine depth and nuance out of Anderson's elliptical storytelling. Finally, we call for a deeper discourse about the film that makes room for its many contradictions and shortcomings, arguing that these jagged edges make the film a more urgent and enduring work than insistences on its perfection.Read Angelica Jade Bastién, on One Battle After Another at VultureRead Lyvie Scott on One Battle After Another at Inverse....Our Theme Song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

God wants to do far and above everything we could imagine, and we must take care not to confuse contentment with settling for less.
Todaywe're looking at Ephesians 4:4-6. Yesterday we talked about the grace of unityin verses 1-3. This is a unity in the church among the members that aredisplayed in our humility, our gentleness, our longsuffering, our bearing withone another, and which we continually endeavor to keep so that the world aroundus sees our love for one another, and most of all, the great love of God forthe world through Christ and His cross. Butmy friend, we are not to compromise our foundational beliefs to experience thisunity. There are so many churches and people today that attempt to uniteChristians in a way that is not biblical. They say things like, "We're notreally interested in doctrine, but in love. Let's just love one another. Let'sset aside what we believe just love one another." My friend, that'scompromise. We cannot compromise the essentials of the faith, the foundationsof the faith. Pauldid not discuss spiritual unity in the first three chapters; he waited until hehad laid the doctrinal foundation. While not all Christians agree on some minormatters of Christian doctrine, they all do agree on the foundation truths ofthe faith. Unity built on anything other than Bible truth is standing on a veryshaky foundation. Now in verses 4-6, Paul names at least seven basic spiritualrealities that unite all true Christians. Didyou notice one word that got repeated over again? “One..”. Why? Paulis making it really clear there is a foundation, a ground for our unity. Thereis a ground for our faith that we must realize we cannot compromise. So, inessentials we have unity. In non-essentials we have liberty. But in all of ourbeliefs we have charity. We can still have truth in love. Even when we disagreeon a foundational doctrinal truth with someone else, we can still love themhopefully they can still love us. Butwe cannot compromise the foundations of our faith which basically is JesusChrist was born of a virgin. Jesus lived a sinless life. Jesus died a vicariousdeath, a substitutionary death on the cross of Calvary. He was buried. He roseagain physically on the third day. And He ever lives to make intercession forus. There's only one way of salvation that is through faith in Jesus Christ. Churchmembership doesn't save you. Works does not save you. Just getting baptized andgetting wet doesn't save you. Only faith in Christ, believing, putting yourhope and trust in His salvation through the cross through His resurrectionpower is what saves us from the guilt and penalty of our sin. These are thefoundational truths. They cannot be compromised. Inverse 4, Paul points out that there is “one body. Paul is speaking aboutthe one body of Christ in which every believer is a member. We find this in 1Corinthians 12:13: Ofcourse, this is the body of Christ, which is His church. Romans 6:3 teaches us that we should know: “we were baptized into the bodyof Christ”. This means that we were placed into Jesus Christ at the momentof our salvation! We are in one body in Christ. This is a spiritual realitythat we need to contemplate, think about, meditate on, believe with all of ourheart. Interestingly, every Tuesday morning at 8:30, at a local church here in Sneads Ferry NC, Imeet with a group of pastors from various denominations. For a fact, we do notagree on every specific area of church practices and beliefs when it comes tocertain ideas about tongues, about predestination, the particulars on the returnof Christ, music or whatever. But I assure you, that we all agree on theessentials of the foundation of faith. These men love one another. They prayfor one another. They love the people of God. They love the community we livein, and missions. In the four years I've been praying with them we are seeingand experiencing God do phenomenal things in our community because we arepraying in one accord. Despite the different names and denominations we are “onein Christ”.
Powerful lessons from looking at the Gibeonites, the five kings, and Joshua's bold prayer.
Todaywe're looking at Ephesians 3:14-15. In the last verses of this chapter, we willbe looking at the prayer that Paul givesus that could even for you and me today be a model prayer. Paul is teaching us another lesson on prayer. Thisprayer in verses 14-21 is the second of two prayers that are recorded inEphesians. The first one is in Ephesians 1:15-23. In the first prayer, theemphasis was on enlightenment, but in this prayer, the emphasis is onenablement. It's not so much a matter of knowing as it is on being. It is aboutlaying our hands on what God has for us by faith, making God's riches and Hislove a vital part of our lives. Paul is basically saying here, I want you toget your hands on your wealth in Christ. I want you to realize how vast it is, andstart to use it on a regular daily, moment-by-moment basis in your life. It'sworth noting also that both of these prayers, as well as the other prisonprayers of Paul, (Philippians 1:9-11, Colossians 1:9-12), are awesome prayersthat you and I can use faithfully and regularly in our own lives, praying forour spiritual well-being and the spiritual well-being of our family and friendsand others in the body of Christ. These prayers deal with the inner spiritualcondition of the man, not the material needs of the body. Remember Paul is inprison. He could be saying, "Oh, I'm hurting. Pray for me. I'm chained up.My wrists are all bloody." No, he didn't ask for those kinds of prayers orteach us to pray those kinds of prayers. Certainly, it's not wrong to pray forphysical and material needs. But the emphasis in these petitions is on thespiritual. Paulknew that if the inner man is what he ought to be, the outer man will be takencare of in due time. So many of our prayers focus solely on our physical andmaterial needs. They fail to lay hold of the deeper inner needs of our hearts. It would do us good to use these prison prayers as our own, asking God to helpus as we grow in the inner man, believing and receiving the riches of Christ inus, and living on those riches. This is where our great need is. Inverse 14, the first thing that strikes us is Paul's posture: “For thisreason I bow my knees”. (This must have been quite an experience for theRoman soldier that was chained to Paul!). You'll notice in the Bible, nowhereare we commanded any special posture for prayer. It says in Genesis 18:22, thatAbraham “stood before the Lord” when he prayed for Sodom. In first Kings8:22, Solomon “stood” when he prayed to dedicate the temple. David “satbefore the Lord” when he prayed about the future of the kingdom in 1Chronicles 17:16. Jesus “fell on His face” and prayed in the garden ofGethsemane in Matthew 26:39. The emphasis is on the spiritual posture here inthe book of Ephesians. Aslost sinners, we were buried in the graveyard of sin (Ephesians 2:1). But whenwe trusted Christ, He raised us from the dead, seated us with Christ in theheavenly places (Ephesians 2:4-6). Because we are seated with Christ, wecan walk so as to please Him (Ephesians 4:1, 17; 5:2, 8, 15). Now we canstand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-13). But theposture that links “sitting” with “walking” and “standing” is “bowing the knee”. Oh,my friend, it is through prayer that we lay hold of God's riches that enable usto behave like Christians, and battle like Christians, as true believers ofJesus Christ. Whether we actually bow our knees, that's not the important thing;but that we bow our hearts and our will to the Lord and ask Him for grace and whatwe need in the real vital matters of our lives. Today, will you take the time to bow your heart before the Lord? Godbless!
Our mistakes do not hinder God's ability to make something good of a messy situation.
Have you ever been so confident after a victory that you rushed headlong into your next challenge, only to face humiliating defeat? Joshua could relate.
The events at Jericho set the framework for the rest of the Israelite's conquest.
Paul talks about some definite things that have brought these twogroups together who usually were at odds with one another. In the first versesof this chapter Paul is addressing both the Jews and the Gentiles. Paul tells bothJews and Gentiles that God has made alive those who were dead in trespasses andsins. Remember that a Gentile is anyone who is not born of Jewish descent. Paulreminds them and us how before salvation in Christ we are all dead in ourtrespasses and sins because sin works against us. We're disobedient. We'redepraved, and we're doomed, and we are children of wrath. But God, but God whois rich in His mercy with a great love that He's loved us. And with that loveHe has now brought us salvation and reconciliation and redemption by His graceand through our faith in Christ (vv. 4-9). God has a plan for our life and weare His workmanship, land He has before ordained before the foundation of theworld that we should walk in these wonderful works of God, the good works thatonly He can do through us and let the light of Christ shine out of us andthrough us to a dark world. Nowwe come to verse 11. Here Paul is particularly addressing theGentiles, those who are not of Jewish descent. First, He reminds them, you'recalled uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision (the Jews) made in theflesh by the hand. The Jews look down upon the Gentiles, calling them the uncircumcision. The Gentiles were like dogs in many cases for most of the Jewish people. Inverse 12 Paul points out that the Gentiles were without Christ being aliensfrom the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenant of promisehaving no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you whowere once a far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. The one wordthat best describes the Gentiles is without. They were “outside” in severalrespects. They were without Christ. They're without citizenship in the nationof Israel without the covenants. The covenants were given to Abraham and to hisseed. BothJews and Gentiles were without hope. Historians tell us that a great cloud ofhopelessness covered the ancient world. Philosophies were empty; traditionswere disappearing; religions were powerless to help men face either life ordeath. People longed to pierce the veil and get some message of hope from theother side, but there was none (1 Thes. 4:13-18). Theywere without God. The heathen had gods aplenty, as Paul discovered in Athens(Acts 17:16-23). But the pagan, no matter how religious or moral he might have been, did not know the true God. The writer of Psalm 115 contrasted the true God withthe idols of the heathen. Itis worth noting that the spiritual plight of the Gentiles was caused not by Godbut by their own willful sin. Paul said the Gentiles knew the true God butdeliberately refused to honor Him (Rom. 1:18-23). Religious history is not arecord of man starting with many gods (idolatry) and gradually discovering theone true God. Rather, it is the sad story of man knowing the truth about Godand deliberately turning away from it! It is a story of devolution, notevolution! The first eleven chapters of Genesis give the story of the declineof the Gentiles; and from Genesis 12 on (the call of Abraham), it is the storyof the Jews. God separated the Jews from the Gentiles that He might be able tosave the Gentiles also. "Salvation is of the Jews" (John 4:22). Godcalled the Jews, beginning with Abraham, that through them He might revealHimself as the one true God. With the Jews He deposited His Word, and throughthe Jews He gave the world the Savior (Rom. 9:1-5). Israel was to be a light tothe Gentiles that they too might be saved. But sad to say, Israel became likethe Gentiles, and the light burned but dimly. This fact is a warning to thechurch today. When the church is least like the world, it does the most for theworld.

In her third appearance on the podcast over a five-year period, Dr. Melanie Peffer tells us about the gifts of the “inverse academic career trajectory” where she moved from tenure-track faculty, to lecturer, and again to adjunct. While from a traditional academic perspective, she explains, this may look like an unsuccessful career. Yet, as her business has grown, she has found great success in entirely unexpected ways:We discuss her new biology textbook coming out in January 2026, her work as a consultant and freelance writer, as well as her love for teaching. She explains that her unconventional career trajectory allows her to set her own benchmarks for success, enjoy her work, take care of and spend time with her family, enjoy her hobbies, and tend to her values and calling. She also discusses identifying with the term, “neuro-spicy,” explaining that while it has its challenges, her unique brain allows her to make observations and connections helpful to carving out her own unique career path. Adam's Paternity Leave is near its end, but while we still have a few weeks left of it, let's look at the first of a pair of episodes (we'll pick up the second installment next week) featuring a key Emmy presenter from last night. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. After that first payment, you won't be charged again until we're dropping new content (which we'll warn everyone is coming), so if you want more of this it can be had, along with access to the fully uncut episodes from 100 to present and Movie Club episodes.Hot on the heels of an episode that nearly broke our rating scale, the Munchie Boys watched Part 1 of a two-parter featuring Ray Romano's kooky brother Robert from the hit turn-of-the-century sitcom for olds, Everybody Loves Raymond. Fans of that show will remember that the actor in question, Brad Garrett, is really, REALLY tall. This causes the kind of continuity problems that only SVU can create. We're obviously talking about complex genital geometry problems. We would, of course, be remiss if our discussion stayed on topic, so expect to hear about Chinese New Year, more car talk from Josh, Rikers Island, and Predator.Sources:A Look Inside Rikers - NY TimesMusic:Divorcio Suave - “Munchy Business”Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Diana R, Tony B, Barry W, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Lily, Sarah L, Melsa A, Alyssa C, Johnathon M, Tiffany C, Brian B, Kate K, Whitney C, Alex, Jannicke HS, Roni C, Erin M, Florina C, Melissa H, and Olivia - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too!
