But what would you do if the first set of officers assigned to your case failed to make you and your parents feel safe? Jarvis Cocker gets lost in the forest at night and encounters a series of rather intriguing characters. As darkness falls on the forest, Jarvis realises he's hopelessly lost. Disorientated and desperately trying to find his way out, his nocturnal woodland walk takes a series of increasingly dark turns. He stumbles upon members of Essex Ghost Hunters who are mounting some rather spooky paranormal investigations. Another presence in the woods tonight is storyteller Lisa Schneidau who recounts some very strange fairy tales and legends of the forest after dark. He then runs into mountaineer Nick Bullock who recalls his own terrifying encounter in the forests of Alberta, Canada. But just as the darkness of the forest seems to be at its most impenetrable, Jarvis runs into bushcraft expert David Willis who guides him back to the light. Lisa Schneidau is the author of 'Woodland Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland', and Nick Bullock is the author of 'Tides: A Climber's Voyage'. Producer: Laurence Grissell

I love this story and was particularly in awe of the plain and beautiful way Mr. Shompole Ole Leroka brings us into what it was like to grow in Maasailand, Kenya in the 1930s and 40's.. Dare to Defy captures the efforts of an individual in Africa as he breaks the constraints of ethnic traditions and carves a path for himself in a fast-changing world. Told in a detailed, humorous and captivating manner, the memoir traces the life of Shompole Ole Leroka as he moves from a pastoralist base by the Shompole Hills on the Kenya-Tanzania border, to Kiserian, a fast-urbanizing setting in independent Kenya. It is a story about relationships, betrayal, love, education, diligence and ambition; an engaging narrative of the pleasure of parenthood, the joys of community life, the value of land, the making of a nation and the effects of globalization on individuals and on the Maasai community. The Lloyd's List Podcast: A new reality is evolving in maritime tech

Lloyd's List: The Shipping Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2021 21:00

SPONSORED CONTENT from Wärtsilä Voyage, in association with Lloyd's List Five years ago, it all sounded pretty easy. Create a connected digital ecosystem onboard, gather a steady stream of data from sensors, send the required data via satellite to the operations centre ashore, enable ship to work with shore to optimise performance. Job done. But reality has kicked in. Apparently, shipping is a little more complex than we had thought. Some maritime businesses have invested in advanced technology – and in the specialist talent needed to get the technology to work efficiently and reliably. But others continue to regard smart shipping as a fantasy. Not quite smoke and mirrors, perhaps mist and reflections. Tech businesses are now much more aware of the need to do two things: listen to their customers' expectations; and educate them about whether or not those expectations can be accommodated. Wärtsilä Voyage President Sean Fernback has responded to the industry's slow journey to decarbonisation by going back to basics. The buzz words have been pushed aside, the focus has shifted from the innovation itself to the customer, and the dots are being connected between the ship, automation, navigation, and propulsion. In this podcast, which looks at the future of technology in maritime, Mr Fernback discusses why Wärtsilä has chosen to work in partnership with some players, while seeking opportunities to collaborate with others. He acknowledges that the business can't build the entire ecosystem alone, so will likely focus on core expertise. He explains why the relatively limited number of ships, and limited amount of data available, will encourage tech businesses to share their resources in spite of the prevailing competitive spirit. And he addresses the tussle for tech talent in which shipping is losing the battle of the pay checks. “Marine is at the bottom of the digitalisation curve,” compared to other industries,” he says, and is likely to stay behind in the race for tech talent – with the shining exceptions of cruise shipping and the larger container lines – until the next generation of digital natives replaces the digital laggards. Finally, Mr Fernback reveals new thinking about the future. “We are moving away from the ideal that Asia has to align with Europe – probably the other way round.” Not before time, some would say. A fascinating insight into the potential and pitfalls in the rapidly evolving world of maritime tech.

Today's storyteller is Dr Clay Tucker! Clay is a tree ring scientist, also known as a dendrochronologist, and his specialty is related to hurricanes and climate change. I could have called this episode "Dendrochronology" but probably most people have no idea what that would mean and I didn't want to detract from this fabulous episode!! So trees grow and add rings every year, so by taking a small core of the tree you get a visual representation of that tree's life, essentially. And you can see the impact of droughts, hurricanes, and disease on the growth of that tree over time. In Clay's research, he's used tree rings from pine trees across the southeastern US to understand the impacts of hurricanes. It's fascinating research and why I asked Clay to be on the podcast! Clay and I are both in Baton Rouge, and know a lot of the same people, and so we talk about that and relationships within science, about how technology in this era allows for collaboration across continents and time zones, about what I call the "Louisiana Quicksand Conundrum", about learning to read the landscape, and of course about trees and wetlands and research. This is such a fun conversation and Clay is great and I hope everyone enjoys it! --- You can find Rachel Villani on Twitter @flyingcypress and Storytellers of STEMM on Facebook and Twitter @storytellers42. History Unplugged Podcast

The history of exploration and establishment of new lands, science and technologies has always entailed risk to the health and lives of the explorers. Yet, when it comes to exploring and developing the high frontier of space, the harshest frontier ever, the highest value is apparently not the accomplishment of those goals, but of minimizing, if not eliminating, the possibility of injury or death of the humans carrying them out.To talk about the need for accepting risk in the name of discovery – whether during Magellan's voyage in which 90 percent of the crew died or in the colonization of Mars – is aerospace engineer and science writer Rand Simberg, author of Safe Is Not An Option: Overcoming The Futile Obsession With Getting Everyone Back Alive That Is Killing Our Expansion Into Space. For decades since the end of Apollo, human spaceflight has been very expensive and relatively rare (about 500 people total, with a death rate of about 4%), largely because of this risk aversion on the part of the federal government and culture. From the Space Shuttle, to the International Space Station, the new commercial crew program to deliver astronauts to it, and the regulatory approach for commercial spaceflight providers, our attitude toward safety has been fundamentally irrational, expensive and even dangerous, while generating minimal accomplishment for maximal cost.Rand explains why this means that we must regulate passenger safety in the new commercial spaceflight industry with a lighter hand than many might instinctively prefer, that NASA must more carefully evaluate rewards from a planned mission to rationally determine how much should be spent to avoid the loss of participants, and that Congress must stop insisting that safety is the highest priority, for such insistence is an eloquent testament to how unimportant they and the nation consider the opening of this new frontier.Can you talk about the dangers of voyages in the Age of Discover, namely Magellan? Marco Polo walking through mountain passes and suffering cold, diseases, and the threat of starvation. Ibn Battuta getting shipwrecked numerous times. Attacked by pirates.Captain Cook was elected a member of theroyal society in 1775, for his geographic discoveries, but also determining a prevention for scurvey.[leeding gums which turn blue-ish purple and feel spongybulging eye ballscorkscrew hair (only in non-infantile scurvy), particularly noticeable on your arms and legsloosened teeth which will eventually fall out in the advanced stages of scurvyfeverswollen legs, particularly swelling over the long bones of your body1.Are there any particular stories of exploration from history that resonate with you and serve as a model of balancing safety with risk-taking? If so, why?2.Walk us through the dangers of the early Space Age. There are notable tragedies, such as Apollo 1, and many failures of the Soviet Space Program, but overall, what was the risk level in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs?3.Take us to the present day. What is the ISS's approach to safety?4.In what ways is American society far less risk-tolerant, and what do you think brought about this change from the 1960s?5.Future space flights that are privately funded will be given far wider berth on risk than a manned NASA flight. Walk us through your “actuarial table” of balancing risk identification, mitigation, and overall cost.6.Overall, how do you think we should understand safety when it comes to human exploration of space?

Follow Captain Liz Clark on the Voyage of the Swell, a surfer's journey in search of a life of exploration, adventure and the perfect wave. After college, instead of getting a job and starting a career, as her peers were, Liz bought a boat. She had always loved the ocean and felt a calling to follow her dreams, and try and make her passions her life, instead of just something crammed in between all the things she was supposed to do. So she decided to do something crazy. At age 22, with no real experience of sailing alone, she set sail from San Diego and simply headed south. No fixed plan in mind, just sailing the coast at the pace of a slow jog, searching out the best surf breaks in the world, places where no one else had ever ridden waves before. This is a story for ocean lovers, it's a story for sailors and surfers, but it's also a story for anyone out there dreaming of escape. For Liz following your dreams and pursuing a life built around your passions isn't frivolous or selfish. It's the door to discovering your life purpose. She says: “Your passions are the compass by which your steer your life”. If you dream of a life of exploration and adventure too, this story is for you. Highlights include:·       Surfing some of the best breaks in the world along the coast of Central America and in remote atolls in the South Pacific·       Discovering the beauty and incredible Polynesian culture of the Marquesas islands, one of the most remote archipelagos in the world·       Free diving with Hammerhead Sharks in the Cocos Islands, an under-water paradise 300 miles off the coast of Costa Rica·       Exploring the Galapagos Islands and find out what a world untouched by human hands would be likeThe book of this journey is called Swell: a Sailing Surfer's Voyage of Awakening. it's out now on Patagonia Books. In this episode we wrap up loose ends before moving on down the timeline: What happened after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and what happened after John White left the Roanoke Colony in August 1587? We also see what happened to all those Elizabethan characters we've been talking about for the last three months, including Francis Drake, Elizabeth herself, John Hawkins, Martin Frobisher, Francis Walsingham, and Philip II. Finally, we explore the long-term consequences of both the Armada and the Roanoke Colony for the History of the Americans. Oh, and we read a poem in the spirit of the day. What if you were born with a rare form of dwarfism, and the doctors told your parents that you would never lead a normal life, that things like running, biking, or even walking without assistance might not be possible for you? 4'4, Actor/Stuntman, Pro Drummer, podcaster, and Surfer, Christophe Zajac Denek, found it challenging to watch the other kids grow taller around him, but he didn't want to let that deter him from living life to the fullest. But what would you do if society told you to stay small, but you knew that you were meant for greater things? Would you decide to just take the roles that were assigned to you? Or would you shock everyone and become an in-demand drummer, actor, and a stuntman, and let the whole world know that you were “kind of a big deal”?
