This is a special episode of Wrongful Conviction, featuring guests Delia D'Ambra, host of Audiochuck's CounterClock, and Frances Watson, President of the Indiana Innocence Project. In Lakeville, Indiana in 1989, Reverend Bob Pelley, his wife Dawn, and Bob’s step-daughters, Janel and Jolene were found shot to death in their home. Bob’s teenage son, Jeff Pelley, was a suspect due to ongoing tensions with his father, which were exacerbated by him restricting Jeff’s ability to attend prom night activities. Jeff claimed to have left home to pick up his girlfriend, but inconsistencies in his alibi and the timeline raised suspicions. Jeff was ultimately charged with the murders in 2002, over a decade after they took place, and convicted in 2006 based on circumstantial evidence. He was sentenced to 160 years in prison. Jeff Pelley has consistently maintained his innocence, and post-conviction litigation raised alternate theories, including alleged ties between Bob Pelley and organized crime from his past life in Florida, potentially involving his friends and the Hawley family who were implicated in various financial crimes. Testimony from a woman supported the theory that Bob might have been targeted for his past illegal financial activities. However, this evidence was deemed inadmissible, and Jeff's requests for a new trial have been repeatedly denied. On April 29, 1989, Bob Pelley, his wife, and two step-daughters were discovered murdered in their home after Bob failed to show up for work as a pastor. Two of Bob's biological children and one step daughter were at other functions away from home that night. Police took particular interest in the oldest Pelley child, Jeff (17), who attended his high school prom the night his family was murdered, then hung out with friends at the local theme park the next day. Police did not have enough evidence to arrest Jeff for his family's murders in 1989, but detained him 13 years later. Jeff was arrested, tried and found guilty of four counts of murder. He currently resides behind bars while continuing to appeal his convictions. CORRECTION: www.justiceforjeff.orgListen to new episodes every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts! "To think he could spend that whole evening doing all of the things they did and just having fun like a kid after murdering his family is preposterous." Jeff Pelley was just 17 when he allegedly murdered his stepmom, his dad, and his two little sisters after being grounded on prom night for stealing CDs from a neighbor's house in 1989 — but did he really do it? Investigators settled on Pelley as their number one suspect when they learned that his father had grounded him for the burglary and forbidden him from attending prom without his supervision. Police also found the family's shotgun missing but no signs of a break in, suggesting that the murderer either entered from a bedroom or was otherwise close to the family. Though the initial case against Pelley was thin with no forensic evidence, murder weapon, or witnesses to hold him responsible, Pelley was nonetheless found guilty in a trial nearly two decades later and he remains behind bars to this day. So let's inside the maddening case of Jeff Pelley --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/victoria-mc-kinney/message

Less than a year after the release of CounterClock Season 3, Jeff Pelley is in an Indiana courtroom for the first time in more than a decade. His defense team has one shot at arguing his post-conviction case. Indiana University law professor Fran Watson claims the now 50-year-old, who is serving four consecutive 40 year sentences, deserves a new trial. Over a period of four days in Saint Joseph County Superior Court, Watson argued that Jeff had an ineffective trial attorney in 2006, prosecutor's committed Brady violations, Jeff's right to a speedy trial was violated, original and cold-case investigators fabricated evidence, and there was never-before explored evidence tied to Bob Pelley's past in Florida that pointed to Jeff's innocence but was repeatedly ignored by prior prosecutors and investigators.Delia went back in Indiana to report on the updates in the case and let CounterClock listeners in on what she's been following since Season 3 released.
