Abraham Shakespeare won thirty million dollars in the Florida Lottery. Three years later, he was dead -- shot twice, buried under concrete in Lakeland, Florida. This episode features real court recordings and interrogation audio.Abraham Shakespeare, 43, was a truck driver's assistant from Lakeland, Florida, who lived simply and was known for his generosity. Friends described him as someone who would help anyone, even when he had little to give. On November 15, 2006, Shakespeare won a $30 million Florida Lotto jackpot, choosing a lump-sum payout of approximately $17 million. He purchased a million-dollar home in a gated community, bought cars for friends, paid off mortgages for relatives, and gave cash to nearly anyone who asked. Within two years, the majority of his fortune had been spent or given away. He told relatives he sometimes wished he had never won.In late 2008, Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore approached Shakespeare, claiming she wanted to write a book about how people were taking advantage of him. Moore positioned herself as his financial protector. Within months, she had Shakespeare sign over his home, his remaining properties, and control of his bank accounts to companies she owned. By early April 2009, Moore controlled nearly everything. When Shakespeare began pressing her about where his money had gone, he vanished. His last confirmed sighting was in the first week of April 2009.Moore launched an elaborate deception to cover his absence. She sent text messages from his phone, forged letters in his name, and paid a man to impersonate Shakespeare on a phone call to his own mother. She told police he had planned his own disappearance. When Shakespeare's family reported him missing in November 2009, investigators with the Polk County Sheriff's Office traced the financial records. Every explanation Moore offered contradicted the evidence. A controlled phone call arranged by detectives caught Moore pressuring an attorney to maintain lies about Shakespeare's whereabouts. In January 2010, acting on evidence from an undercover operation, authorities discovered Shakespeare's body buried nine feet deep under a concrete slab at a property on Highway 60 in Plant City, Florida. He had been shot twice in the chest with a .38 caliber revolver. On December 10, 2012, a Hillsborough County jury convicted Dorice Moore of first-degree murder after three and a half hours of deliberation. The judge called her "cold, calculated, and cruel" and sentenced her to life in prison without parole. This episode features court recordings and interrogation audio from the investigation into Abraham Shakespeare's murder. 3. Wicked Queens and the Sacrifice of Vestals (5)Southon discusses Tullia, the "wicked" opposite of Lucretia, who murdered her family to seize power and defiled her father's body. Her ambition served as a warning that monarchy breeds tyranny. The focus then shifts to the Vestal Virgins, such as Oppia, who were tasked with maintaining Rome's eternal flame. If bad omens occurred, a Vestal might be accused of unchastity and buried alive as a human sacrifice to appease the gods. Often, there was no evidence of wrongdoing beyond "unchaste" behavior like telling jokes or wearing nice dresses. (6)

Mabel Kretshmar was a 59-year-old widow who had recently returned to her hometown for a fresh start. On the bitterly cold night of February 13, 1959, she walked nearly a mile through the snow to attend a church prayer service, determined not to let the weather stop her. Somewhere along the way, she was targeted. A man dragged her from view, beat her brutally, and left her for dead. Somehow, Mabel managed to stumble—shoeless—to a nearby gas station. Police responded quickly, but she was fading fast. She died at the hospital just hours later. Authorities launched the largest manhunt the area had ever seen, with multiple agencies involved and a reward offered. Despite those efforts, her killer was never identified. Sixty-seven years later, her case remains unsolved.
On a hot summer evening in 1982, Kelly Bergh Dove went to work at the Imperial gas station in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and then disappeared in the middle of the night. Her family are still waiting for her abductor to be caught and brought to justice. Kelly Bergh Dove was 20 years old when she went missing on June 18th, 1982. She was 5-feet-one inches tall with brown hair and brown eyes. She weighed between 100 and 120 pounds. She had a partial dental plate that replaced her two front teeth, a scar on the back of her head, another along her hairline, and another on her right wrist. She wore contact lenses and glasses. At the time of her disappearance, Kelly was wearing a light-colored pinstriped sweater on top, and tan or cream-colored slacks. She also wore a Turner Ashby High School ring with the initials KJB inscribed on the inside of the ring. Alaska is the largest state in the union. It is also one of the deadliest places in America to be an Indigenous woman. Alaska Native people make up roughly one-fifth of the state's population but account for more than sixty percent of its recorded homicide victims. Four of the ten American cities with the highest per-capita rates of missing and murdered Indigenous women are located in Alaska. And for decades, a quiet, unspoken policy within the Anchorage Police Department — known internally as NHI, or "no human involved" — ensured that the women most at risk received the least protection. This episode is the story of what that policy made possible, and what a community of determined women did about it. In 2017, Brian Steven Smith — a South African national living in Anchorage — was arrested after a woman brought a memory card to police containing footage of him torturing and murdering thirty-year-old Kathleen Jo Henry, an Alaska Native woman he'd picked up near a Walmart and brought to a midtown hotel where he had maintenance access. During his interrogation, Smith voluntarily confessed to a second murder — that of Veronica Abouchuk, fifty-two, an Alaska Native woman from the village of Stebbins whose remains had been lying near Earthquake Park for more than a year. He was convicted in February of twenty-twenty-four on all fourteen counts and sentenced to two hundred and twenty-six years in July of twenty-twenty-four.But the case didn't end there.Photographs recovered from Smith's devices showed a third woman — appearing dead or unconscious, with blood visible, a man's foot standing over her body. Those photographs sat in a case file for five years. It took a community advocate digging through sentencing documents to find them and publish them. Within hours, the family of Cassandra Boskofsky, missing since August of twenty-nineteen, recognized her. Smith was never charged in her death. Her remains have never been found. In September of 2024, her family held a presumptive death hearing and a civilian jury of six ruled her death a homicide — the only official acknowledgment her family has ever received. Also discussed in this episode: the NHI designation and the testimony of former APD officer Michael Livingston, who spent twenty-eight years on the force and is now a full-time MMIP advocate; the missed opportunity when a woman named Alicia Youngblood told police in 2019 that Smith had confessed a murder to her, and police did nothing; the question of Ian Calhoun, a man prosecutors believe probably knew about at least one of Smith's murders and who has never been charged; and the HBO and Investigation Discovery documentary series "Lost Women of Alaska," executive produced and narrated by Octavia Spencer, which premiered February twenty-fifth, twenty-twenty-six.There are two rewards currently outstanding. Five hundred dollars for information leading to the recovery of Cassandra Boskofsky's remains, and five hundred dollars for information leading to the arrest of Ian Calhoun. In 1984, the body of an unidentified man was found in Volusia County, Florida, leaving behind almost no clues to who he was, how he lived, or why he died. Decades later, investigators and online sleuths are still trying to put a name to this John Doe and piece together the final hours that led to his lonely death. This episode takes a broad, introductory look at the case, the few details we do know, and the haunting question at the heart of every unidentified victim: how does someone simply vanish from the record?

From space lasers taking out ballistic missiles to shocking crimes in sanctuary cities, today's episode exposes how modern military tech and political decisions collide with public safety. We break down the latest on U.S. Space Force directed energy weapons, Iran and Israel missile strikes, and a deadly incident in Fairfax, Virginia involving an illegal immigrant with a long criminal record. Episode Summary Today's show spans cutting-edge military tech, U.S. foreign operations, and domestic policy failures. Directed Energy & Space Force: Lasers from U.S. Space Force are now operational, tracking missile launches from Iran via infrared signatures. Over 200 Iranian ballistic missiles have reportedly been destroyed, along with dozens of launchers. Israel has similar technology. Precision strikes and next-generation space targeting are changing modern warfare, making conventional attacks less relevant. Trump's Calculus & Shock & Awe: Insights from interviews with Jonathan Carroll and John Carroll reveal how these technologies influence U.S. strategy in Iran and Venezuela, including the high-risk operation to extract Nicholas Maduro with minimal troops. Sanctuary City Tragedy: Back home, a shocking case in Fairfax, Virginia saw Stephanie Minter, 41, fatally stabbed by Abdul Jala, an illegal immigrant with over 30 prior arrests and a final deportation order ignored by local authorities. The incident raises questions about sanctuary city policies and ICE cooperation, highlighted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security press release. National Immigration Impact: Thousands of noncitizens with convictions for murder or sexual assault are reportedly released into the U.S., according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Investigative reporting reveals how even convicted sex offenders are released under federal policies, emphasizing gaps in safety and enforcement. Health & Addiction Update: New studies suggest popular weight-loss drugs may have unexpected benefits in addiction treatment, potentially helping those with alcohol or drug dependence. Today's episode exposes the intersection of advanced military technology, immigration policy, and public safety, asking Americans: who really has your protection in this country? Key Topics U.S. Space Force & directed energy weapons Missile defense in Iran and Israel Nicholas Maduro extraction operation Sanctuary city policy and Fairfax, Virginia murder case ICE detainers and enforcement failures (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Federal & state conflicts over immigration law Weight-loss drugs and addiction treatment

In 1981, a Harvard graduate student vanished after stepping out of Logan Airport the night after Thanksgiving. As investigators searched for answers, they focused on a suspect connected to another murder – a woman who was killed just two years earlier. He was convicted in one case and widely believed responsible for the other. But after reviewing thousands of pages of records, we found gaps that raise difficult questions: Was the wrong man blamed? He spoke to Audacy about a heartbreaking case where a mother was found guilty of manslaughter of her 25-day-old baby. And, to start we have some updates to high profile cases – the Nick Reiner and Nancy Guthrie cases – as well a murder investigation underway in the Bay Area. Featuring audio from KNX News in Los Angeles, WBEN News & Talk in Buffalo, KCBS Radio in the Bay Area, the Dana & Parks show out of KMBZ in Kansas City and Scoot out of WWL in New Orleans.

In 2008, Gregory Green promised the parole board that he was a changed man. When he had murdered his first wife in 1991, he was a monster. Now, he was different. He was ready for another chance. Believing him, the parole board granted him his freedom, and for years it seemed the right choice. He got married. Raised kids. Got a job. Until, in 2016, he betrayed everyone's faith in him. Police stepped into his second wife's home to discover the unthinkable: The annihilation of another family. - Sources:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eTYeCoYyxm58DXXdoFbHQyWHlWbcH9iKGIefFcQToW4/edit?tab=t.y2yayotxnlcb Listen to our new show, "THE CONSPIRACY FILES"!: -Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5IY9nWD2MYDzlSYP48nRPl -Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/id1752719844 -Amazon/Audible - https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ab1ade99-740c-46ae-8028-b2cf41eabf58/the-conspiracy-files -Pandora - https://www.pandora.com/podcast/the-conspiracy-files/PC:1001089101 -iHeart - https://iheart.com/podcast/186907423/ -PocketCast - https://pca.st/dpdyrcca -CastBox - https://castbox.fm/channel/id6193084?country=us - Stay Connected: Join the Murder in America fam in our free Facebook Community for a behind-the-scenes look, more insights and current events in the true crime world: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4365229996855701 If you want even more Murder in America bonus content, including ad-free episodes, come join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/murderinamerica Instagram: http://instagram.com/murderinamerica/ Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/people/Murder-in-America-Podcast/100086268848682/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MurderInAmerica TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theparanormalfiles and https://www.tiktok.com/@courtneybrowen Feeling spooky?
