Una prueba de ello es cómo enfrentó la enfermedad y la posterior muerte de su hija Mary.En cierta ocasión, mientras estaba impartiendo una campaña de evangelización en Europa, Andrews recibió un telegrama que le informaba que su hija Mary estaba muy enferma. Por ello, volvió a Estados Unidos para llevarla al Sanatorio Adventista de Battle Creek, Míchigan. A pesar de que la jovencita recibió las mejores atenciones médicas bajo la dirección del doctor John H. Kellogg, la enfermedad le arrebató la vida.La muerte de su hija fue un terrible golpe para John N. Andrews. En una conversación con su amigo, el hermano Kinne, admitió que el fallecimiento de Mary le entristeció mucho, y agregó: "Hermano Kinne, me parece estar tomado de Dios con una mano adormecida, que no siente nada". En otras palabras, es como si Andrews hubiera dicho: "Estoy insensibilizado, el dolor ha adormecido mi vida, pero sigo creyendo que el Señor me sostiene".Las palabras de John N. Estas cuatro antítesis ponen de manifiesto que, aunque somos frágiles vasos de barro, la excelencia del poder divino actúa poderosamente en nuestras vidas y nos hace salir vencedores incluso en las circunstancias más adversas. Y es que la vida no es un episodio, es un proceso que va más allá de lo que estamos viviendo hoy. Aunque la llama del dolor haya puesto al límite nuestra fe, aunque Satanás haya llenado de nubes grises el paisaje de nuestra existencia, nunca podrá destruirnos, porque el Señor nos sostendrá de la mano y persistiremos como si estuviéramos “viendo al Invisible" (Hebreos 11:27).Quizá sintamos que estamos solos, que nadie nos sostiene. Si ese es nuestro caso, aferrémonos a la promesa divina: "Si el hombre cae, no se queda en el suelo porque el Señor lo sostiene de la mano" (Salmo 37:24, RVC). A lo mejor nuestra alma adormecida no lo sienta, pero el Dios que sostiene el universo también sigue sosteniendo nuestras vidas.

El doctor John Harvey Kellogg dirigió en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX el sanatorio-balneario de Battle Creek, lugar al que fueron a recibir curas y tratamientos muchas personas de la época. Seguidor acérrimo de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día, John Kellogg promovía el vegetarianismo, el ejercicio físico moderado y la abstinencia sexual. Además de imponer como parte de su alimentación los famosos copos de cereal que más tarde comercializaría -con mucho éxito- su hermano William, el doctor Kellogg sometía a sus pacientes a los más variados -y disparatados- tratamientos, entre los que destacaban los enemas, unas intensas lavativas para las que utilizaba una máquina diseñada por él mismo y que era capaz de inyectar al paciente hasta 57 litros de agua.
