But we recently discussed how some people's climate anxiety has turned into climate optimism of late, and that's a trend that could continue this year. One piece of good news relates to depletion of the ozone layer. You may well have heard of the so-called “hole” in the ozone layer. Well, the name is a little misleading. It actually refers to the ozone layer thinning in areas, rather than an actual hole. This phenomenon was first discovered in 1985 by Joseph Farman, Brian Gardiner and Jonathan Shanklin, all scientists at the British Antarctic Survey. What's the purpose of the ozone layer? 40 years ago a hole was discovered in the ozone layer. It provoked an international effort to ban the chemicals that were destroying our protection from the sun. Tom Heap and Helen Czerski are joined by Jonathan Shanklin, one of the team that realised that CFC chemicals used in aerosol cans and refrigerants were helping to create a 20 million square kilometre hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. Also on the panel they speak to Alice Bell, author of ‘Our Biggest Experiment: a history of the climate crisis' and head of policy, climate and health at Wellcome, and Bristol University's Professor Matt Rigby who helps monitor how well countries are sticking to their promises on protecting the ozone layer.They discuss the unparalleled international unity that swiftly banned the worst of the ozone-destroying chemicals, and ask why we can't come up with a similar solution for manmade climate change. Our guest is Barbara Waibel, author of a book on the Hindenburg and Director of Archives at the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Although you may think that the dreaded term is symptomatic of our recent, some would say, obsessive focus, on the topic and the almost daily news of fresh discoveries, warnings and political reactions to climate change, the concern about what we are doing to our environment goes back a long way. About thirty-odd years in fact. The discovery of the annual depletion of ozone in the ‘ozone layer’ of the atmosphere above the Antarctic, was first announced in a paper by Joe Farman, Brian Gardiner and Jonathan Shanklin which appeared in the journal Nature in May 1985. Later, NASA scientists re-analyzed their satellite data and found that the whole of the Antarctic was affected. This was one of the most significant findings in environmental research, and triggered many alarm bells. Do you remember all the fuss about CFC’s in aerosol sprays and ‘fridges, and the Montreal Protocol? It led to the banning of CFC’s and one of the success stories of international intervention. Jonathan Shanklin was sifting through a backlog of data when he made the startling discovery of a hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica. In this podcast, he and others recall events in the mid-1980s and discuss how the 'ozone hole' became the poster child for environmentalism. Originally aired 17/05/2013. In May 1985 Joe Farman, Jonathan Shanklin and Brian Gardiner of the British Antarctic Survey published their paper in the scientific journal Nature. It revealed there was a large and expanding hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctic and that the cause was the chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs then commonly used in aerosols and refrigerants. The size and speed at which the hole had formed was alarming and the paper helped convince governments across the globe to take action. The resulting Montreal Treaty of 1987 has been called the most successful environmental legislation ever passed. CFCs were effectively banned and their prevalence in our atmosphere has been slowly decreasing. The ozone layer hole does appear to be healing but the process is slow and increasingly complicated. Today the interplay between ozone and the greenhouse effect is only just becoming understood and even more worrying is new research which points to previously unknown CFCs and other ozone depleting substances accumulating in the stratosphere.
