We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, which is another way of saying we wandered bravely from topic to topic with the confidence of people who believe curiosity is a form of planning. It started with musical dreams, which immediately ran into taxes, because nothing crushes artistic ambition faster than discovering the government would also like a solo. From there we examined the mysterious phenomenon of celebrity wealth, which turns out to be mostly an illusion created by sunglasses, confidence, and someone else paying for lunch. Naturally this led us to government conspiracies, because once you realize famous people don’t have as much money as you think, it’s only a short hop to assuming someone is hiding something. We discussed survival skills for the collapse of society, a scenario everyone is very confident about despite having trouble assembling IKEA furniture. The Doomsday Clock came up, which is reassuring because it’s good to know the end of the world is being managed by people who own a clock. We also talked about zombies, because every serious discussion eventually circles back to zombies, the one apocalypse we’ve fully rehearsed thanks to television. Along the way we touched on personal health journeys, which mostly involve learning what foods now hate us, and food preferences, which are deeply emotional and should never be questioned. Black pepper emerged as a cultural force, gold mining as an economic mystery, and hibernation as an underutilized lifestyle choice for anyone tired of the news. In the end, the conversation proved that modern life is complicated, confusing, and possibly ending soon, but at least we can laugh about it while seasoning our food aggressively and considering a long nap.

In 1947, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the “Doomsday Clock” to draw attention to the existential dangers posed by human technology. The time was set to seven minutes to midnight, with midnight symbolizing the destruction of life on Earth. Just two years before, in 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The world saw firsthand the potential of nuclear annihilation. As World War II was ending, a different kind of conflict was underway: the Cold War. And over the next four decades, the United States and Soviet Union competed for nuclear dominance—not only through foreign policy and military strategy, but also on the home front, using propaganda and retaliation against critics. Throughout this period, people of conscience, like Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers in the early 70s, repeatedly sounded the alarm. Ellsberg and others warned that there was no way to “win” a nuclear war. If one side launched a nuclear weapon, the other would inevitably respond, leading to mutual destruction. Today, more than 30 years after the end of the Cold War, the nuclear arms race continues. According to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, nine nations continue to stockpile nuclear weapons, including the US, Russia, China, Israel, Iran, Pakistan, France, the United Kingdom, and North Korea. On January 27, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock forward to 85 seconds to midnight—the closest humanity has ever come to global catastrophe. The question remains: Is there time and the will to change our trajectory, to learn from the past, and avoid a path to global destruction?

This week, we're going to go down the rabbit hole in New Orleans with the Magical Krewe of MadHatters. While that krewe is focused more on beautiful costumes and rocking parade floats for Mardi Gras than rabbits running around checking their pocket watch like in the Alice in Wonderland tales they take their name from, another time of watch is looming over us. Humanity is closer to destroying itself, according to atomic scientists who revealed on Tuesday that the famous “Doomsday Clock” was set at 85 seconds to midnight — the closest it has been in the nearly 80-year history of the clock. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a science-oriented advocacy group, made the announcement on Tuesday, metaphorically rating how close humankind is to annihilating itself with human-made advancements. Midnight represents the point at which humans will have made Earth unlivable.“It is the determination of the bulletin's science and security board that humanity has not made sufficient progress on the existential risks that endanger us all. We thus move the clock forward,” said Alexandra Bell, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. “The risks we face from nuclear weapons, climate change and disruptive technologies are all growing. Every second counts and we are running out of time. It is a hard truth, but this is our reality.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Join Lionel on The Other Side of Midnight as he wages war on the decline of the English language. He dissects the true cause of snow-shoveling deaths, arguing that poor shovel design and sudden exertion—not the snow itself—are the real killers. The conversation shifts to a controversial take on New York's "homeless" crisis, which Lionel rebrands as a mental health emergency that requires warehousing rather than just outreach. Finally, he scoffs at the Doomsday Clock's move to "85 seconds to midnight," dismissing it as fear-mongering by oligarchs to maintain control. Learn more about your ad choices. The conversation shifts to a war on the decline of the English language, the "fear-mongering" behind the Doomsday Clock, and why politicians like Eric Adams need to stop playing "dress-up" in emergency jackets. Broadcasting from a studio cold enough to "hang meat," Lionel tackles the neuroscience of duck boots, the conspiracy theories filling the public trust void, and the existence of Tom McAn. In this episode of The Daily Herold, Jon Herold opens with breaking news that the FBI is executing a search warrant at a Fulton County election office tied to the 2020 vote. The discussion centers on why this development matters now, what evidence could still exist years later, and how prolonged allegations of election fraud may have desensitized the public to accountability. Jon explores how disclosure, timing, and narrative rollout could shape public reaction if proof is finally presented. The episode also pivots to broader media theatrics, including renewed attention on the Doomsday Clock and how fear-based messaging is used to manufacture urgency and compliance. Additional commentary touches on censorship, nonprofit influence, government spending priorities, and the difficulty of breaking through information fatigue in an environment saturated with conflicting narratives. Throughout, the focus remains on perception, conditioning, and whether meaningful exposure can still move a public that's been told for years to stop paying attention.

In this episode, Alex opens with the stark warning that the Doomsday Clock now stands at 85 seconds to midnight — the closest it's ever been, a symbolic sign of rising existential risks from nuclear tensions, climate change, AI and fracturing global cooperation. Against that ominous backdrop, the European Union and India have just finalized a landmark free trade and strategic partnership that reflects a broader realignment of alliances in a volatile world. As Washington navigates trade disputes and diplomatic friction, Brussels and New Delhi are deepening economic ties and exploring diversified partnerships that go beyond traditional Western frameworks. This episode digs into what these shifts mean for global power structures — and whether new friends can really keep the clock from ticking any closer to catastrophe.
Atomic scientists have set the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to the theoretical point of world annihilation. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists cites aggressive behaviour by nuclear powers, fraying nuclear arms control, global conflicts and unregulated AI as the key risks driving toward global disaster.
