Welcoming Simone Woodland, Co-founder of Circle Living, toPurposely Podcast. Simone is an architect and the co-founder of Circle Living,a people-first property development company building intergenerational, community-led neighbourhoods across New Zealand, with developments underway inWellington, Christchurch and Nelson. The idea is simple but not common in mainstream housing: design homes so people have their own privacy, while making it easy to connect with the people living around them. Originally from Bristol in the UK, Simone traces herinterest in community back to childhood, when her father ran street parties on their cul-de-sac to bring disconnected neighbours together. At 15 she helped build a house in a co-housing development in Bristol's St Werburgh's, an early,hands-on introduction to what community-built housing could look like. She studied architecture in Brighton and completed a mastersin urban design and planning at Bristol University, but found the traditional architecture industry limiting. Her early career as a social entrepreneur started with Paper Arts, a platform she built for students to showcase their work, which grew into a gallery, studios and a printing service, and eventually into a training facility teaching enterprise skills to young people. A trip around New Zealand's South Island in 2013 convincedSimone this was where she wanted to live. She moved through the Edmund Hillary Fellowship, joining its first cohort of global entrepreneurs focused on people and planet. That move led to Elemental Design and Build, a natural buildingcompany in the Tasman region working with materials like hemp, straw and earth, and eventually to the Takaka co-housing neighbourhood in Golden Bay. Simonetalks through how that first development came together: a 14 hectare piece of land secured with a 10 percent deposit, nine months to find the rest of the funding, and a model built on loans from future residents rather than a traditional developer structure. Circle Living builds on that experience with a differentfinancing model, allowing residents to buy off the plans with a deposit rather than putting large sums at risk upfront. The communities run on Sociocracy, a decentralised decision-making approach where smaller groups hold responsibilityfor specific areas rather than requiring full consensus on every decision.Simone talks candidly about what it takes to build trust within a community, why shared resources like community solar and car share schemes help keep ongoing costs down, and her long-term goal of seeing co-housing become a mainstream choice in New Zealand, in the way it already is in Denmark, where five percent of new homes are built as some form of collective housing. The conversation also gets into what community actuallydelivers day to day, including a moment when a neighbour drove ninety minutes each way to collect Simone's children after she was unable to drive, and what that kind of reciprocity means for the people who choose to live this way.

Professor Liz Morris is a glaciologist whose work in some of the earth's most inhospitable environments has broadened humanity's understanding of climate change and polar science. Her accolades include the prestigious Polar Medal and an OBE for services to Polar Science.Liz was born in London in 1946 and family legend has it that she fell in love with snow and ice the following year during what was known as the Big Freeze - one of the most severe and punishing winters in British history. She studied physics at Bristol University and applied for a role at the British Antarctic Survey in the early Seventies. At that time the institute did not have any female scientists working in the field and her application was rejected.Liz bided her time and eventually did get to work at the BAS, becoming head of the Ice and Climate Division in 1986. The following year she became the first British woman to undertake tent-based research in Antarctica, arriving just as the ozone hole discovery was breaking. Liz completed her last field trip in 2014. In 2020 the Antarctic Place-Names Committee named a glacier in her honour. Liz divides her time between the Cotswolds and Scotland. The Torah commands us to count the days from Pesach to Shavuos. We call this Sefirat HaOmer. Yet the name is puzzling. The Omer was a one-time barley offering brought in the temple on the second day of Pesach. Why define this entire period of counting by a one-time korban? Wouldn't it be more precise to call it: "The Count to Shavuos?" When you bake bread, you mix the flour and the water, you knead it, and then you set it aside. Your involvement ends at that point. Yet the dough does not remain static. The dough, so to speak, takes over. It seems to change "on its own" Matzah is the exact opposite. From the moment the dough is mixed, it's never left to rise, never left to "develop" on its own. Bread, Chametz, represents a world that seems to be self-raising - where nature appears to operate by itself. And Matzah represents a world where nothing can happen independently of Hashem. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed "Bohemian Rhapsody". His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band "Foreigner" (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, "Feels Like The First Time", "Cold as Ice" and "Long, Long Way from Home". Other production work included "The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars", "The Curves", and "Nutz" as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. What lies beneath the world's oceans? From the phenomenal infrastructure of telecoms cables to shipwrecked galleons and treasure and the sea creatures of the literary imagination - we explore the mysteries of the deep. Adam Rutherford chairs Radio 4's discussion programme which starts the week. His guests are:The writer Julian Sancton is the author of Neptune's Fortune which tells the story of Roger Dooley, a diver who went in search of a lost ship. An accidental discovery in the archives led the unlikely treasure hunter to search for the shipwreck of an eighteenth century galleon, the San José. Laden with riches on its way to the New World, it was sunk in a fierce battle and its location was forgotten for centuries. The pursuit is a tale of maritime archaeology, rival treasure hunters, legal and political obstacles and the challenge of narrowing the search to a small area of the sea bed. We think of the internet as wireless, but it is connected by nearly 900,000 miles of fiber-optic cables at the bottom of the ocean, stitching whole continents together. In The Web Beneath the Waves, the journalist Samanth Subramanian explains the secretive cable-laying operations behind the world of undersea infrastructure. He discovers the environmental risks to them, corporate interests over them and the acts of “grey zone warfare” when ghost ships cut the cables of other countries.Joan Passey is a senior lecturer in English at Bristol University and a BBC Arts and Humanities Research Council New Generation Thinker. She is the co-founder of the Haunted Shores Network and a leading researcher in literary study of coasts and seascapes, combining an understanding of folklore, myth and technology.
