KamranV is dedicated to new technology for music. From his work at Interscope New Media, through his work on the Phonocut vinyl lathe, Kamran is pushing envelopes at every turn. One of his on-groing projects is the QUARK plug-in system, which provides and easy-to-assemble toolkit for quad encoding and decoding of tracks. The stuff is ‘cooked’ enough that it was used for Susan Ciani’s Live – Quadraphonic record; if it is good enough for Susan, it’s good enough for me! In our interview, we cover everything from Kamran’s time growing up in Oklahoma, through his time at Interscope, and into the world of studios, hardware development and software experimentation. Through all of it, you get an impression of Kamran’s dedication to the “new” in New Media, and his entrepreneurial approach to anything in his path. You can find out more about everything that Kamran is up to by visiting his namesake website: http://www.cykik.com/ Enjoy! KamranV experiments with quadrophonic sound and holograms to craft consumption experiences that challenge the ways audiences understand and engage with art and brands. First taking a technical approach to sound and visual delivery in the 2000s with vehicles like DVDs and early digital music (known then as "new media"), he eventually produced Suzanne Ciani's LIVE Quadrophonic, the first album of its kind in 30 years. KamranV is the founder of LA-based CyKiK, an arts agency celebrated for its ability to use technical limitations to arrive to incredible achievements in art. Listen as he describes how his work has pushed the boundaries of specs and generated more daring, inspiring art experiences. Powered and distributed by Simplecast
If you haven't heard of quadraphonic sound, join the club. The early-stage surround sound technology quietly died in the late 1970s, and was ultimately supplanted by innumerable other spatial audio technologies. In its heyday, it was used by the likes of Pink Floyd and The Who. Quadraphonic sound was all about 4-speaker surround sound (technically 4.0 surround sound). These days, surround sound can spread over 100+ speakers for a totally immersive experience. So why is somebody bringing quad back? In this edition of the Digital Music News Podcast, audiophile/entrepreneur/tinkerer KamranV explained why he's bringing this retro technology back, and why he thinks artists will love it. But this isn't just idle thought: KamranV has already released a live quadraphonic LP with electronica artist Suzanne Ciani. Wait: quadraphonic live? Just listen...
