Guest and HostGuest: George Platsis (AKA DJ Zeus) | Website: https://www.djzeus.com/home.htmlHost: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast & Music Evolves Podcast | Website: https://www.seanmartin.com/Show NotesIn this episode of Music Evolves, host Sean Martin is joined by George Platsis—known on stage and online as DJ Zeus—for a conversation about the art, the science, and the soul of DJing.DJ Zeus brings a unique perspective to the turntables, shaped by a classical music education, years performing in Toronto's largest clubs, and a deep appreciation for music that tells a story. From early days making mixtapes on cassette to manipulating multiple turntables live, he shares how his journey started with rock, shifted into dance music, and eventually settled into a world of layered soundscapes and emotional storytelling. From Mixes to SoundtracksDJ Zeus doesn't just play music—he creates moments. He explains that making a great mix isn't about throwing popular songs together; it's about reading the room, responding to energy, and creating a journey. Whether it's a club performance or a recorded set in Ableton Live, each mix is built like a story—with dynamics, tension, release, and emotion. This philosophy carries through to how he uses technology. Instead of letting it do the work for him, Zeus uses tools like pitch shifting, EQ manipulation, and harmonic mixing to craft something that couldn't exist without human touch. “If you're not pushing the technology,” he says, “you're not adding your own soul to it.”When Technology Meets FeelZeus shares how today's tools can isolate vocals, remix tracks on the fly, and even keep beats perfectly aligned—but warns that without intuition, timing, and feel, you're just making playlists. The difference between a DJ and a playlist? Emotion. Surprise. Humanity. He also reflects on two tracks that changed everything: Daft Punk's One More Time and Cher's Believe. One brought club music into mainstream pop; the other proved pop could crush in the clubs. Both used vocal manipulation in new ways and redefined the sound of their time. This episode isn't about nostalgia—it's about remembering why music matters. DJ Zeus reminds us that great DJing isn't just what you hear—it's what you feel.SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring this show or placing an ad in the podcast?Sponsorship

Those of us who survived the 60s did have one invaluable take-away ... culture follows music. While powerful anti-establishment lyrics did temporarily redirect the war industry, so we thought, those tumultuous times we're orchestrated to plant insidious seeds for a larger psyop that would later reveal itself. On this Alfacast we have a delightful musical talent making waves through music, but with eyes wide open. Grant ‘Prezence' Ellman is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer from Sedona, Arizona. His 2021 truth-bomb dismantling the SCAM of “covid” and “government” was censored from Spotify within a week of release. Prezence is fiercely devoted to his mission of spreading TRUTH, FREEDOM and LOVE through radio ready records, vivid videos and lucid live performances. His studio work is completely self-produced, mixed, mastered, shot, edited and promoted, with a true DIY ethos and work ethic. On stage, Prezence captivates audiences by live looping multiple instruments, singing soulful vocals & live mixing — "dubbing" his loops. His innovative Ableton Live rig pays homage to dub pioneers King Tubby & Lee "Scratch" Perry as well as modern dub masters Umberto Echo and Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred. With heavy inspiration from the modern reggae of Midnite, Protoje, Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid, Grant weaves elements of funk, jazz and rock into a sonic tapestry that is uniquely, and undeniably, Prezence. In just one false election cycle, he's released three albums worth of singles, videos to boot. His empowering energy has graced main stages at Rise & Vibes, Unison, Music & Sky, Totality, Viva Iriezona, Anarchapulco, The Greater Reset, where he's supported the likes of Steel Pulse, Tribal Seeds, Kabaka Pyramid, The Elovaters, The Movement, Mike Love and Dub FX — just to name a few. Prezence is grateful to have found his life's purpose making music and sharing that gift with others. Please join this episode as we have an insightful discussion on the present state of our world, and if we're lucky, Prezence just may entertain us with an inspiring tune. "I've been on a very long burnout in regards of producing music, and I'm only just beginning to get out of it. "I normally use FL Studio for my production but I've decided to take things a step further by trying to use Ableton Live (12), especially since I've gotten my license quite recently, I figured it's worth a shot trying to use the tools within that DAW. "I wanted to put my resampling skills to the test, whilst also maintaining my inspiration by some of the NCS releases I've heard over a decade ago. I've decided to make one of the more difficult genres "Glitch Hop", which works exceptionally well when it comes to resampling. I think this turned out quite fine :) all for fun and for the vibes. "I also used Xfer's brand new Serum 2 which came out earlier this week! It was a great learning process." "My composition 'Our Tapes Have Nothing To Do With You' was inspired by AJ Born's field recording particularly for the fact that the recording documents the end of a Christmas Market in Germany. This fact, and the general atmosphere of the soundscape, reminded me of two really special and memorable weekend trips I'd taken with friends in 2018 and 2019 – to Belgium and Sweden respectively, during that lead-up period to Christmas. I felt weirdly inspired by the fact that a recording made by a person I have never met, of a place I have never been to, could evoke these specific personal memories of completely different places and different people. This thought heavily informed the lyrics that I wrote for 'Our Tapes Have Nothing To Do With You', and the way in which I distort and reshape portions of AJ's original recording throughout the song. Overall, I feel this all ties into Sonic Heritage's interest in the overlooked importance of sound – the way in which the preserved sound of a space and time can tell us so much about the original source, while also sparking off associations that can expand outwards to all kinds of different thoughts and memories and ideas. "In terms of what I did practically to the original field recording in 'Our Tapes Have Nothing To Do With You', I ran it through my Arturia Microfreak synthesizer and also made use of Ableton Live's granular synthesis and sampling functionality to create new, fragmentary atmospheres out of the original recording. To begin with, these exist as ghostly background elements underneath the more traditional instrumentation and my voice; but they come to take over the music builds to its more abstract final stages. Finally, I also found particular snippets of the recording to use as metallic-sounding “snare” samples." Luebeck Christmas market reimagined by Mute Branches. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. "Voyages on large bodies of water used to be more complicated than today, since water not only being the life-giver also is connected to death and peril. Being away on a sea voyage could and still can involve being away from loved ones for a very long time, and therein a farewell can include both anticipation for the travels and expecting a longing for the loved ones. To embark is therefore in a sense a bittersweet farewell. "This piece is in itself a voyage, it starts building some anticipation, climaxing in a sweet melody but is later transformed into something more bittersweet and involves a farewell in the end. You can almost imagine standing looking at the ship ever so slowly leaving shore and watching it disappear towards the horizon, while at the same time seeing other boats coming and going. "This recording is based on sounds of waves by the Giudecca canal boat traffic next to San Basilio cruise terminal in Venice, Italy. "The music was recorded on a Steinway C by layering some chord structures, a bassline and a melody and later rearranging everything in Ableton Live." San Basilio, Venice reimagined by Stefan Klaverdal.

"The original recording is of a livestock market in the city of Altay, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. There are men shouting and talking, various noises of a livestock market, and a huge variety of bellowing sounds from the livestock. The animal noises are very musical in their own way, but also wonderfully unique and discordant, and I was inspired to use these sounds as the basis for experimentation as I developed the piece. "Ableton Live is my DAW, and I used some software to convert the audio to midi notes; the 1st half in a chromatic 12 note scale to pick up on the animal bellowing discord, and then in the 2nd half, I used the same software to conform the notes to a pentatonic scale. "I used this midi with ‘conventional' instruments, like a Piano and synth vst. But I also put samples from the field recordings into other vst software that allowed me to manipulate the sample and turn it into a playable instrument; these were the Arturia Synclavier, and Madrona Labs Sumu. "For the drums, I used the Audio-to-Drum feature in Ableton to convert the field recording to drum rack midi, and then used that as the basis for the ‘jazz-drummer workout' drum track. "Finally, I used the field recording in another vst and with effects to try to simulate the ‘Throat Singing' style, which is practised in the Altay region." Livestock market in China reimagined by Bruce Gray.

Transitioning from hardware to digital plugins allowed for more flexibility and experimentation in music production. The MIDI tools and scale awareness in Ableton Live 12 provide a user-friendly way to explore music theory and create musical compositions. Balancing technical knowledge with creative exploration is important in music production Breaking the rules and trying new things can lead to unique and interesting results. The standalone version of Ableton Push has improved workflow and allows for a more immersive and enjoyable music-making experience. Reacting and responding to what you are creating in the moment is important for staying in a creative flow. Simplifying your setup and focusing on using default Ableton devices can help avoid getting caught up in technical details and allow for a more fluid creative process. Challenging oneself and embracing the struggle in the creative process leads to a deeper sense of satisfaction and connection with the music. The energy and process put into creating music can be felt by the listener, even if it's not consciously recognized. Bringing energy and enthusiasm to live performances is crucial for creating a great show and engaging the audience. Creating a comfortable and engaging atmosphere can help build a connection between the performer and the audience. Playing for smaller venues allows for more eye contact and a sense of community, while larger crowds can create a domino effect of energy. Tom recently released his new album Micro((osmos under the name Conso/e. Tom joined me for a 3rd conversation on the Music Production Podcast to talk about his new album and some of his latest Max for Live creations, including Essentials. We spoke about the fun and challenges of creating music and devices. Tom shared some great insights from his experiences that will surely help music-makers of all levels. We also spent some time discussing the latest features in Ableton Live 12.1. This episode is sponsored by Baby Audio, makers of incredible music software. Use the code MPP15 to save 15%! https://babyaud.io Listen on Apple, Spotify, YouTube Takeaways: Tom's Essentials Pack offers simple and focused Max for Live devices that perform specific tasks effectively. Tom emphasizes the importance of headroom and organization in mixing, allowing for flexibility and clarity in the mix. Shakers and tambourines can add groove and texture to music, serving as both rhythmic and textural elements. Distinguishing between creative effects and mix effects helps maintain clarity and intention in the production process. Mixing in mono can provide a fresh perspective and help create a balanced and cohesive mix. Tom's minimalist approach to music production focuses on using only what is necessary to achieve the desired sound. Playing percussion instruments requires technique and skill, and it's important to have respect for percussionists. Imperfection in music production can add a unique and organic sound to the music. The new features in Ableton Live 12.1, such as Auto Shift and macro randomization, offer exciting creative possibilities. There is a need for reevaluation in the music tech space to focus on tools and content that actively help musicians make more music. Limiting your tools and focusing on intentional limitations can enhance creativity and productivity in music production. Philip Meyer is a software developer, artist, and educator based in Los Angeles. He makes devices for generating rhythms and melodies for Ableton Live, most recently a collection of several generative MIDI Tools for Ableton Live 12. He is also the creator of the Rhythm and Time Toolkit, and package for Max MSP for modular sequencing. Philip's goal is to create playful, intuitive, and powerful sequencing devices that help artists to discover new musical forms. Driving Philip's design approach is the goal to blur the line between composition and performance, in which an artist creates a thoughtful, deliberate composition but works fluidly and intuitively.
