It doesn't get much better than doing a live tasting in The Netherlands at Maltstock with someone you hold as, not just as a person you respect greatly within the whisky industry, but also, a good friend.Listen in as Joshua and Jason share the stage with Mark Watt [formally] of Cadenhead's. Talk about a group of chuckleheads!!! So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- RØDE for making *really* great microphones- Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
What makes for an amazing whisky festival? Well, it starts with a great idea but is supported by an army of helpers to ensure that the event goes to plan without a hitch. We know this because we (Joshua and Jason) had run Whisky Jewbilee in the states for 7 years across 3 cities. Our guest today, Teun Van Wel, knows this doubly so as his Maltstock events don't just run 3 hours but run for a full weekend and have done so since its inception in 2009. How does he do it? He starts off by relaxing. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! When you've got the chance to interview the inimitable Billy Abbott from The Whisky Exchange fame you jump at it! That is of course if unless you're Joshua Hatton then you miss the opportunity altogether but revive that chance a year late. Now in his 2nd year of drinking at Maltstock with Billy Abbott, Joshua has made sure to carve time out to get Billy on wax to talk about what got him (Billy) into whisky, selecting casks for The Whisky Exchange (blindly), issues with shipping to the US and other pain in the butt countries, and what it's like being the voicebox of The Whisky Exchange. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! During his time at Maltstock in The Netherlands Joshua had a nice little sit down with world renown whisky writer, the one and only, Mr. Hans Offringa. Aside from a long conversation about Frank Zappa, the two gents discussed whisky, food, writing, whisky writers, beer, and much, much more. Joshua and Jason then tease out that conversation a bit for you. You will not want to miss this episode - the final one for 2017! So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! This time around, we're on location at Whisky Live Paris thanks to our friends at La Maison du Whisky. Our tasting panel has a Dutch flair, as Bob Wenting, Teun Van Wel, and Nol Villems taste the Aberlour 12-year-old non-chill-filtered Speyside single malt, Benromach's cask-strength 2001 expression, the Nikka Yoichi 15-year-old from Japan, and our "mystery whisky."
One of the world's most unusual whisky festivals is coming up in a few weeks. Maltstock doesn't take place in a hotel or convention center, but at a former Scout camp in the Dutch woods. Maltstock co-founder Bob Wenting joins us on this week's episode to discuss what makes Maltstock unique. In the news, Abhainn Dearg releases its first official single malt, Catto's celebrates 150 years, and Buffalo Trace releases the second edition of Col. E.H. Taylor Bourbon.
This time around, we'll focus on two upcoming whisky festivals in Europe. Maltstock will bring together whisky clubs and individuals from around Europe for a weekend in the Netherlands, and Teun van Wel will tell us how the event came together. Chris Maybin of La Maison du Whisky will preview next month's Whisky Live Paris for us as well. In the news, the whisky world is mourning the death of longtime Jack Daniel's master distiller Jimmy Bedford, Four Roses unveils the second release in its Mariage Collection series of bourbons...and more layoffs in Scotland.
