Oak & Grist Distillery (Black Mountain, NC) WF0050 Just a few miles east of Asheville, North Carolina (which has held the honor as Beer City USA several times) is a somewhat sleepy community on the edge of the mountains, where Will Goldberg and Charlie Stanley are focused on distilling up two amazing spirits - an American Single Malt and a Dutch-style Jenever. Their stories start with both wine and cheese - backgrounds that center them in agriculture, flavor, experience, and terrior. Their pot still distilled American single malt was developed thanks to some help from a long-time Speyside distillery manager. The results speak for themselves. Rosen Rye was once favored by distillers for its unique flavor. However, Rosen fell out of favor several decades ago because of cross-pollination and the development of other strains of rye. Now, Rosen is making a comeback on farms in Pennsylvania and Michigan, and we'll talk with two distillers working with the heirloom grain. Bringing Cider to Hungary: The Story of Abaliget Garden Projects In this episode of Cider Chat, we learn about the southwest Hungary, where Ancha Gergely is building Abaliget Garden Projects, her small-scale cidery focused on Hungarian apples, pears, and centuries-old varieties. Ancha's journey began in England, where she developed a love for cider. For Hungary it appears that there is little known about cider or cider making, prompting her to craft her own. Ancha Gergely With a deep passion for apples and heritage varieties, Ancha started her orchard in 2018 by grafting local and English varieties onto Hungarian rootstock. Her husband's contribution of English cider apple graft wood expanded the orchard significantly, leading to her current collection of 600 apple and pear varieties. The story actually starts many miles to the south of the town of Rothes, where the distillery is situated, and some years before its construction, by the Firth of Tay at Dundee. An ambitious construction project to build a rail bridge over a nearly 3 mile-long stretch of the fifth began in 1871. Due to challenges and necessary redesigns, there were significant delays, and the construction was only completed in early 1878, after which the first engine successfully crossed the bridge. Queen Victoria herself used the bridge in June of 1879. In the same year in which the bridge was completed, the construction of Glenrothes began, and it was not very long until it was ready for production. On the evening of Sunday, 28 December 1879, the first distillation run occurred. On that very same evening, one of the greatest structural disasters in all of the British Isles occurred when a violent storm blew at the precise angles and strength to cause a collapse, just as a train carrying roughly 70 passengers was passing over it. There were no survivors. Just as the first spirit flowing out of the stills at Glenrothes was being collected, so too did the spirits of those ill-fated travellers depart from this world. Though initially prosperous, the future of Glenrothes would be very turbulent indeed. A fire which raged throughout the distillery 18 years later caused major damage and losses, threatening closure, but they managed to scrape through. Just six years later, in 1903, there was a massive explosion that caused serious damage. In 1922, the second great fire to ravage the distillery burnt down warehouse number 1 and destroyed over 200 000 gallons of maturing whisky. That was not the end of Glenrothes' trial by fire, though, as another significant one occurred in 1962 and prompted the owners to rebuild the damaged structure and also expand the distillery to increase production. The distillery, by the way, is situated right next to a graveyard. One can't help but think of the staff who worked late shifts throughout the years and caught a glimpse of the tombstones illuminated by the cold glow of a winter moon and reminisced about that tragic day, which some thought to be the cause of all the distillery's woes. But like an undying spectre, the spirit of Glenrothes has always endured, and they have made and continue to make some good Speyside whisky, though they are quite often overlooked or maybe just regarded as best forgotten, lest some unfortunate series of events be summoned. Better to just let some things lie undisturbed. Haunted Distilleries: Spirits of a Different Kind October 31, 2023 –––––– Julia Higgins Over the centuries, the distilling business has produced famous figures, legends, outright myths, and even ghosts—more than a few of them, in fact. Reports of spectral sightings and other phantom phenomena have occurred so often that they're almost the rule rather than the exception. Some distilleries have conjured up so much spooky notoriety that paranormal experts have visited, often affirming suspicions that unseen forces are at play. Speyside's Dallas Dhu has been a historic site since it closed in 1983, left intact the way workers left it on the final day of production. Now, there are plans in place to revive the venerable distillery, which is owned by Historic Environments Scotland. HES has signed a deal with Murray McDavid owner Aceo Limited to resume production at Dallas Dhu while maintaining it as a historic site. We'll talk with ACEO managing director Edward Odim on this week's WhiskyCast about the challenges — and the responsibilities — in taking on the revival of Dallas Dhu. Uncle Nearest Whiskey founder Fawn Weaver spent eight years researching and writing “Love & Whiskey,” the story of Nearest Green and Jack Daniel. During that time, she also launched the Uncle Nearest brand, one of the fastest-growing whiskey brands on the market, and the book also tells that story as well. We'll talk with Fawn Weaver on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth, and share tasting notes for the Uncle Nearest Rye whiskey in the What I'm Tasting This Week Department. Back in May Rosalind took a trip to Speyside to witness some of the celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of The Macallan. As part of these celebrations they undertook an extraordinary collaboration with Cirque du Soleil. It would appear that more and more often these days whisky brands are going to extreme lengths to market and promote their products. Macallan has certainly become a part of the high end of the market so Rosalind set out to learn more about the celebrations and whether the industry is being changed by this drive to create luxury lifestyle products and more and more elaborate collaborations. First up she spoke to Ruth Wylie who is Global Experiential Lead at Macallan who tells her about the celebrations which are afoot and the importance that nature plays for the distillery. She also chatted to Marie-Hélène Delage, Creative Director at Cirque Du Soleil about how they developed their show with Macallan. Finally, Rosalind wanted to speak to a whisky expert about recent changes in the whisky market and how this is affecting sales and availability of certain brands. Mark Littler, Whisky Broker and Market Analyst, talked to Rosalind about the significant changes that have taken place since 2015 and how collaborations like this one are becoming more the norm for those interested in investing in whisky. The week's top story was the sale of the independent bottler Single Cask Nation to the Artisanal Spirits Company, which also owns the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The two bottlers will co-exist under one corporate umbrella, with SCN founders Joshua Hatton and Jason Johnstone-Yellin remaining in charge. We'll talk with them on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, there's new life planned for a long-closed Speyside distillery and the winners of the 2023 John Barleycorn Awards have been announced. 

The vintage Lagonda belonging to Society founder Pip Hills played an instrumental part in our whisky club's foundation, carrying the first precious cargo of single casks from Speyside back to his Scotland Street home in Edinburgh to share with friends. In 1990, Pip Hills and his brother-in-law Dick Pountain decided to take a road trip to Prague in the Lagonda, to witness Václav Havel's inauguration as president of the Czech Republic. The magazine The Classic Motoring Review subsequently commissioned Pip and Dick to write a piece about the journey – and how Society whisky helped to make it a success. We asked Pip and Dick to tell us that story in their own words.

Everyone knows we're not Scotch guys. We do our best, and we do like it, especially expressions that tend toward Speyside or Highland varieties.
