On this episode of Great Practice, Great Life, Steve sits down with Chris Barron, the inspiring lead singer of the Spin Doctors, for a deep dive into his incredible journey—one marked by relentless resilience, reinvention, and raw determination. Chris shares his story of overcoming a tough childhood, dyslexia, vocal paralysis, and the heartbreaking loss of his brother—all while forging a legendary career in music. His secret? A relentless work ethic, a sharp mind, and a unique approach to handling setbacks. He embraces what he calls “guided moping,” allowing himself time to process challenges before shifting into creative problem-solving mode. From the Spin Doctors' early days recording on a Tascam four-track cassette to crafting hits like “Little Miss Can't Be Wrong,” Chris has always turned adversity into art—something most business owners can relate to. He shares his unique analogy of running the band like a pirate ship, emphasizing the power of collaboration and teamwork. He also offers insights into how musicians, much like lawyers, find success when they align their personal aspirations with the broader goals of their team. But Chris isn't just about music, his insatiable curiosity fuels everything he does. Twice facing vocal paralysis, he adapted with resilience and ingenuity, proving that persistence beats the odds. Whether it's photography, chess, or studying ancient Greek, he's constantly evolving, refusing to be defined by his struggles. No matter your path—music, law, or any dream worth chasing—Chris's story is a testament to how hard work, heart, and resilience can shape a lasting legacy. Spin Doctors kick off their tour on April 8, 2025, and their new album drops on April 12, 2025! In this episode, you will hear: Chris Barron's creative journey and identity as a poet and performer The analogy of running a band like a pirate ship, emphasizing collaboration and teamwork The Spin Doctors' early days and evolution, highlighting key partnerships and songwriting Overcoming personal and professional challenges, including vocal paralysis and loss Chris's passion for diverse interests, such as photography, chess, and lifelong learning The importance of reputation, honesty, and balance in creative and legal careers Resilience and adaptability as key components of a successful artistic career Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Welcome back! So, I've seen so many videos outside in ASMR lately that I wanted to try a mic with a built-in audio recorder (and also, I'm currently having trust issues with my iRig Duo, that I bought many years ago, so I bought the nicer one that I could use in my studio). After watching a single tutorial, this is what I did. I really look forward to using it more in the future. I really have so many ideas! Many blessings and the sweetest of dreams!
As Jason says, we'd rather have a root canal than discuss whisky tariffs again but, here we are, talking about them because the recent bout of proposed tariffs on Canadian products is directly affecting American whisky producers and people to the tune of just about a billion dollars in lost export revenue, annually. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. We return from our holiday break with Tyler Gilmore, who you may know as BlankFor.ms! Tyler is most known as an electronic artist, using tape loops, pedals, synths, and other textural elements to create evocative slow-moving songs. It may surprise the listener, then, that his object is the trumpet! It's the instrument that started it all for him, and we all learn about his journey with it, then away from it, and perhaps back to it? Only time will tell. In the meantime, we talk about the bodily experience of instruments, some different things our listeners bought over the holidays, Andy's rabbithole of servicemen strats, and a lot of other things along the way. Today, we sit down with the multi-talented Greg David, a guitarist, music producer, and engineer. In Part 1 of this conversation, we explore Greg David's journey through music production, the evolution from working with loops to embracing live takes, and his deep understanding of mixing and dynamics. Greg shares his perspective on creating authentic music by experimenting with non-traditional panning techniques, understanding the importance of dynamics, and the impact that recording in live settings can have on a track's energy and feel. His reflections on how the recording techniques of the past can still influence today's music provide a fresh perspective on approaching music production in modern times.Throughout the episode we discuss:* The influence of Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings on recording techniques.* How live takes differ from overdubbing and their impact on a track's authenticity.* The importance of dynamics and how Greg incorporates them into his production.* The impact of saturation and how different levels can change the feel of a mix.* Greg's transition from sample-based music to creating his own unique sound using live instruments.* How Greg's mixing philosophy revolves around creating space and balance within a track.Timeline:0:00 - Intro 1:14 - Welcome Greg David1:50 - Track 1: "Sail On" by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings4:59 - Discussion on Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings recording techniques9:33 - Track 2: "Be Better" by DJ Harrison12:28 - Organic textures and glued mixes of DJ Harrison15:11 - Live takes vs overdubbing18:52 - Toru's recent experience using live takes in his production23:46 - Track 3: "She's Gone" by Disclosure28:24 - Discussion on the modern, clean mix of the Disclosure track32:31 - Starting with drums35:33 - Greg explains why he gave up sampling and began creating all his sounds41:10 - Explanation of ADSR and how it applies to mixing45:56 - Beginning the discussion on Greg's mixing philosophy47:03 - OutroList of References from the Interview:Songs:* "Sail On" by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings* "Be Better" by DJ Harrison* "She's Gone" by DisclosureProducts:* Ableton Live (mentioned in Greg's workflow)* Tascam 388 (used for recording drum breaks)Connect with Greg David:* Instagram: @gregory_david_gtr* Spotify: Gregory David* YouTube: @GregorydavidmusicConnect with Toru:* Website: torubeat.com* Instagram: @torubeat* YouTube: @torubeat* Spotify: Toru* Apple Music: ToruCredits:This episode was co-produced, engineered and edited by Matthew Diaz. New single malt distilleries have been popping up everywhere be they in the UK, EU, US, Asia, the Middle East, etc... it seems one can't open up their email inboxes without hearing news of a new distillery enterprise. Quite exciting if you ask us! Nearly all of these distilleries start by launching a Vodka and a Gin (or some sort of "botanical spirit") to keep their distillery afloat while they wait for their whisky to be of age to bottle and sell. Most of these distilleries -- some of our very favorites, to be very clear -- are set up specifically to produce delicious whiskies at very young ages (3, 4, 5yo, etc...). This is where Kythe's approach stands apart. Their aim is to make whisky in the manner it was made in the 50's/60's/70's which could very well mean they're not expected to release a standard core whisky for quite some time. Impatient folk like us may have to wait (and wait) to taste. The waiting is the hardest part but good things also come to those that wait so.... Anywho, listen in as Jess discusses the ins and outs of the Kythe Distillery with 2 of its founders: Jonny McMillan & Angus MacRaild. Listen, too, to hear details of our latest US release and our upcoming global releases. 8 casks of whisky. So many that we're calling it a #MurderOfCasks ! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour and listen in. Unless you're driving. For some, whisky is a passing thing to enjoy every now and again ("gimme a Scotch on the rocks!"), for others it's a hobby to be explored while you're living the rest of your life as normal, and for others, like Irene Tan, it's a fascination and an obsession. Irene Tan is, perhaps, one of the most passionate people in whisk(e)y here in the US and her name is synonymous with great barrel picks for her shop (Canterbury Liquors aka Whisky Mentors) as well as fascinating and delicious blends. Listen in and learn why Irene is someone you should be paying attention to if you care about whisky. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour (of the aforementioned SCN Balcones), and listen in. We unboxed our $10,000 WhatNot delivery and cracked our packs of Election 1992 trading cards and talked about Australian Border Patrol and Morgan Spurlock and John Fetterman's driving and Brandon Schaub and Dianne Feinstein's cremation and bringing a horse to a glory hole Sorry about the audio quality, I forgot the adapters to plug my Tascam into the board Thank you to Jesse (https://www.knightsoftheslice.com/) and The Yard (https://www.theyardbeacon.com/) for hosting us
The first in a series of interviews held in Texas during an SCN launch features Jason sitting down with Emma Crandall & Gabe RiCharde of Balcones Distilling. The trio discuss distilling and blending practices, basically all things Balcones, but touch on the category and future of American Single Malt writ large. This episode is paired quite well with an SCN release of Balcones -- a massively delicious single malt made exclusively from the legendary Golden Promise barley. Why not open your bottle and enjoy this episode with a generous pour? Don't have a bottle yet? Let's remedy that: https://bit.ly/3X9Q6QD ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour (of the aforementioned SCN Balcones), and listen in. Unless you're driving. Joshua and Jason met MGP's Master Distiller, Ian Stirsman, on a chance encounter at the legendary Jack Rose Dining Saloon just after an equally legendary Single Cask Nation event just after the pair won the 2024 Icons of Whisky Award for Independent Bottler of the Year. Having the chance to talk to someone responsible for making the world's most recognizable bourbon and rye whiskies was a true blessing and a blast to boot! Add to this, the duo brought Ford Ray in on the conversation as part of Ford's #GivingTuesday2023 winnings. Ford is a long standing Nation member and getting to know him a bit more was time well spent. We hope you agree. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Joshua, Jason, and James have some shared history as all three started their whisky careers via their blogs. Joshua had Jewmalt, Jason had Guid Scotch Drink, and James had Scotch Odyssey. Fast-forward 13 years and, well, you know Joshua and Jason's story with the birth and growth of Single Cask Nation, but James' journey (or should we say odyssey) led him to the one to take the helm as Whiskymaking Director of Compass Box as John Glaser steps down. Holy moly if that's not the dream of a whisky lover's lifetime we're not sure what is! Add to this, Joshua and Jason detail the launch of Free Shipping at singlecasknation.com as well as re-share the details of their 6 new American whiskies launching June 6th, 2024. There's so much to share but, seeing as this is a podcast, best to listen than to read, no? ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Few people in the industry have had as storied career in whisky in the way that Chris Riesbeck has. Aside from Chris' story being a fascinating one, Chris is a dear friend and someone Joshua and Jason have been keen to have on the podcast. Today is that day. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as the boyz did. Add to all this, Joshua and Jason share details of the next 6 bottlings for SCN Online and they're all American whiskies.
