THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta On the night of Halloween, 1963, in the suburban Illinois town of Haddonfield, six-year-old Michael Myers brutally stabs his teenage sister Judith to death with a chef's knife. Fifteen years later, his psychiatrist Dr. Samuel Loomis drives with nurse Marion Chambers to the sanitarium where Michael is incarcerated to escort him to a court hearing. After Loomis exits their car to unlock the main gate, Michael jumps on the roof and attacks Marion. She runs from the vehicle, allowing Michael to steal the car and drive away. Michael makes his way to Haddonfield, killing a mechanic and stealing his coveralls before stealing a white mask from a hardware store. He begins stalking teenager Laurie Strode, whom he saw drop off a key at his long-abandoned childhood home that her father is attempting to sell. Laurie notices Michael throughout the day, but her friends Annie Brackett and Lynda Van Der Klok dismiss her concerns. Loomis arrives in Haddonfield and discovers that Michael has stolen Judith's tombstone from the local cemetery. He meets up with the town sheriff, Annie's father Leigh Brackett, and they search for Michael. That night, Michael follows Annie and Laurie to their babysitting jobs. Laurie watches Tommy Doyle, while Annie stays with Lindsey Wallace across the street. Michael spies on Annie and kills the Wallace family dog. Tommy spots Michael from the windows and thinks he is the boogeyman, but Laurie dismisses his concerns. Annie takes Lindsey to the Doyle house so she can pick up her boyfriend while Laurie watches both kids. Michael hides in her car and strangles her before cutting her throat. Lynda and her boyfriend Bob arrive at the Wallace house and have sex. Bob then goes downstairs to get a beer from the kitchen, where Michael pins him to the wall with a chef's knife. Michael poses as Bob in a ghost costume to taunt Lynda, who teases him to no effect. Annoyed, she calls Laurie to find out what happened to Annie, but Michael strangles her to death with the phone cord while Laurie listens on the other end, not knowing what is happening. Meanwhile, Loomis discovers the stolen car and searches the streets. Worried by the phone call, Laurie goes to the Wallace house and finds her friends' bodies and Judith's tombstone in the upstairs bedroom. She runs to the hallway where Michael slashes her arm, causing her to fall over the banister. Dazed, she escapes the house with Michael in pursuit. She makes it back to the Doyle house and tries to call for help, only to find the phone dead. Michael sneaks in through the window and attacks her again, but she stabs him in the neck with a knitting needle. Thinking Michael is dead, Laurie staggers upstairs to check on the children. While Tommy and Lindsey hide in the bathroom, Laurie hides in the bedroom closet. Michael reappears, and Laurie stabs him in the eye and in the chest. After she sends Tommy and Lindsey to a neighbor's house to call the police, Michael rises again. Seeing the children running from the house, Loomis investigates and sees Michael strangling Laurie. Loomis shoots him six times, knocking him off the balcony. When Loomis goes to check on the body, he is unsurprised to see that Michael has vanished. He stares into the distance as a traumatized Laurie sobs in terror.

Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson dive into the suspenseful world of slasher cinema with a Reaction & Review of John Carpenter's iconic 1978 horror classic, Halloween! This genre-defining film introduced audiences to Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut, later known for True Lies and Knives Out), a quiet Haddonfield teen whose Halloween night turns into a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse when she becomes the target of a masked killer. Michael Myers, the silent and relentless embodiment of evil, escapes from Smith's Grove Sanitarium and returns to his hometown to stalk new victims—launching one of horror's most chilling franchises. The film also stars Donald Pleasence (The Great Escape, You Only Live Twice) as Dr. Sam Loomis, the psychiatrist determined to stop Michael before he kills again, and Nancy Kyes (The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13) as Laurie's friend Annie. With its minimalist score (composed by Carpenter himself), stark cinematography, and brilliant use of suspense and silence, Halloween set the standard for slasher films to come. Key scenes—such as Michael's haunting figure in the doorway, the POV opening shot, and Laurie's desperate final confrontation—have become some of the most highly searched and iconic moments in horror movie history. One small business navigates Trump's on-again, off-again tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods

At Fishtown Seafood, owner Bryan Szeliga is trying to navigate Trump's on-again, and off-again tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. Szeliga, who operates three retail and wholesale locations in Philadelphia and Haddonfield, New Jersey, sells a range of seafood. He said a fair amount of shrimp comes from Mexico and briny, slurpable oysters are the biggest part of his overall business, with 60% to 70% coming from Canada. The Trump administration's on-again, off-again 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico—which went into effect on March 4, only to be suspended on some items for a month on March 6—are giving Szeliga whiplash. The flip-flopping is making it tough to plan ahead. And if the tariffs do eventually go into effect, he'll likely need to raise the prices of products and offer his customers fewer choices of oysters. Szeliga started Fishtown Seafood four years ago after other jobs in the food industry, including as a chef and working for a nonprofit. His customers include neighborhood locals and others who shop at his retail shops, as well as restaurant wholesale clients. On March 4, most of his suppliers told Szeliga they'd be raising prices. He made only one purchase while the tariff was in effect, buying some “sweet petite” oysters from Prince Edward Island to make sure a wholesale client had enough product. He paid the whole 25% markup himself and didn't pass it along to his client, eating the extra cost. The suppliers' price increases are likely to come down now that the tariffs are postponed, but only for a month. Now that he has a month's reprieve, Szeliga said he plans to adjust his own inventory and work with his wholesale clients to plan out a menu that will be less affected by the tariffs. That might mean replacing higher-priced, higher-quality oysters with domestic or lower-priced Canadian offerings. The total value of U.S. imported seafood in 2023 was $25.5 billion. Canada, as the largest supplier, delivered more than $3.6 billion in seafood products to the United States in 2023, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

"Halloween" is the most-covered franchise in the Shat The Movies catalogue, and this Spooktacular season we're bringing you "Halloween 2," courtesy of listener Rob T. So what if it this movie mostly takes place in the same small hospital? So what if Michael Myers' backstory essentially is rewritten? This sequel has more of what we loved about the original "Halloween": great boobs, quirky Haddonfield, bloody kills and an absolutely wild Dr. Loomis.  In this episode, Gene and Big D cover dental records, journalism, razor blades in candy, hot tubs, medical malpractice, forced sedation and getting shot in the eyeballs.
