Imagine tasting a single barrel so good that you try to convince the distillery to bottle it under a different label. That happened to us with a Rock Hill Farms barrel sample, and it became the spark for a wide-open conversation about how great whiskey actually gets made, picked, and shared. We bring you into the room for private selections at Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Nashville Barrel Co., comparing barrel proof to bottled proof and exploring why some bourbons sing at 100–103 proof while others demand the full, fiery ride. We break down a standout two-year honey cask from Nashville, no added honey, just a Beam-made bourbon resting in a honey-seasoned barrel, delivering a fragrant, balanced sweetness that feels like “cheating at bourbon” without crossing into liqueur territory. Along the way, we tackle unicorn culture, blind tasting reality checks, and the very real logistics behind allocated drops, including how a historic flood slowed bottling lines and why the three-tier system can stretch timelines. You'll also hear how our club runs: fair lotteries for pick trips, open communication with a growing waitlist, and travel traditions that turn a selection into a story, charter hops into Frankfort and Bardstown, Nashville hoops weekends, and Guthrie picks capped with dinner over the OKC skyline. We preview a stacked lineup: Stagg, Four Roses private selection, 1792 rarities, Larceny Barrel Proof, EH Taylor Single Barrel, and a craft red wheat barrel proof, while returning to the core truth: single barrels have no friends to hide their flaws, which is exactly why the best ones feel unforgettable. If you love bourbon for the flavor, the hunt, and the people you share it with, this one's for you. Hit play, subscribe for more deep pours and real talk, and tell us: which bottle would you bring to a desert island?
Host Todd Ritter flies solo in this special episode, taking listeners on a journey through the latest bourbon news and a deep dive into whiskey history. With Jim out of town, Todd kicks off the first half by tackling a massive slate of industry updates before sampling a unique experimental whiskey. He covers the Lost Lantern "Scotch Lover's" Fall 2025 collection, the nationwide expansion of Wyoming Whiskey's "Buffalo Bill Cody," Jim Beam's new Harden's Creek trio (Mushroom, Beaver, and Owl), and Jack Daniel's Distillery Series #15, a "Sweet Mash" Tennessee Whiskey. Todd also details new releases from Chicken Cock and Town Branch, Buffalo Trace's 9 millionth barrel milestone, and the bombshell news that Kirin is exploring the sale of the Four Roses distillery. The segment features a deep dive into the 2025 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC), highlighting the new 15-year-old Colonel E.H. Taylor Bottled in Bond and a formidable 142.8-proof George T. Stagg. The first tasting of the day is the Remus Master Distiller Experimental Series Number One from MGP. This 9-year-old, 107-proof bourbon was aged in lightly charred and heavily toasted Seguin Moreau barrels made from staves seasoned outdoors for 24 months. Todd finds a big vanilla nose with a "wine funkiness," fig, and dark baking spices. The palate proves "soft and velvety" with notes of toasted marshmallow, chocolate, a hint of red wine, and a sweet, spicy finish of candied pecan and allspice. For the second half, Todd unearths a true gem for history nerds: a complete reading of a 1909 essay by none other than Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr., titled "The Rule of the Regions." Discovered in the University of Kentucky archives, the essay provides a fascinating look into the mind of the bourbon pioneer. Taylor boldly declares Kentucky bourbon superior to Scotch and Irish whiskeys, attributing this to the "Rule of the Regions"—specifically, the paramount importance of Kentucky's unique limestone water. He discusses the industry's massive (for 1909) $180 million value, the evolution from primitive wooden stills to scientific copper distillation, and the superiority of Kentucky's dry, ascending-proof aging methods. Most notably, he champions the Bottled-in-Bond Act as the ultimate guarantee of quality and authenticity, a protection he notes that Scotland and Ireland unfortunately lack. To accompany this historic reading, Todd tastes the Oaklore Story Series Number 2, an Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish 4 Grain Bourbon. Hailing from Matthews, North Carolina, this 95-proof blend of 5-to-6-year-old bourbons (70% corn, 10% rye, 10% wheat, 10% malted barley) is finished for 12-18 months in sherry casks. The whiskey shows a ruby tinge and offers a nose of raisin, wine, caramel, and vanilla. The soft palate features notes of black cherry, cocoa, sherry-driven nuttiness, and sweet dark fruits. Be sure to check out our private Facebook group, "The Bourbon Roadies" for a great group of bourbon loving people. You will be welcomed with open arms!

Portland, Oregon-based Westward Whiskey filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last April seeking to restructure its finances. At the time, CEO Tom Mooney told us the future was still bright for Westward, which makes American Single Malts. Now, Westward is poised to emerge from bankruptcy after a group of the distillery's original investors bought its assets. Tom Mooney re-joins us this week on WhiskyCast In-Depth to explain why his original optimism still holds. In the news, Four Roses is reportedly up for sale, with a price tag estimated at $1 billion. Sazerac is planning another billion-dollar expansion project in Kentucky, while the federal government shutdown is delaying approvals of new whiskies and distillery permits.
The 2025 release of Four Roses SMBLE is 109 proof and is a blend 13 year (OBSV, OESV, OBSK) and 19 year (OESV) bourbons. Send us a textBourbon on the brain, bikes in the rack, and a weekend that kept surprising us. We rolled into Lexington aiming for miles and meaningful pours and came away with a signed nine-millionth barrel at Buffalo Trace, a “unicorn” experimental bottle, and a reminder from Freddie Johnson that whiskey is really about the people you share it with. Between double allocation drops and an upstairs tasting lineup featuring Eagle Rare, Blanton's, and Weller 12, we dug into where the bourbon market might be headed—and why more shelves seem to be stocked again. The rides were the quiet kind we love: bluegrass roads, rolling hills, and a pace that felt better than expected after a long recovery. Back at camp, the Bourbon Country Burn offered light dinner and great fireside company, where small experiments—like a coffee liqueur topped with cold cream—turned into conversations about craft and curiosity. A tour at Town Branch raised thoughtful questions about modern production and logistics without spoiling the joy of a well-made pour. And thanks to Phil Talks Whiskey, we explored export-only bottles, from Japanese Blanton's to a Four Roses variant you won't find stateside, widening our palate and perspective.Along the way we met listeners who became friends, traded stories about riding, parenting, and the right moment to open a special bottle, and even squeezed in a bonus Sunday ride before the long drive home (complete with a highway standstill and some strategic humor). We wrapped with a label-worthy Jay Mattingly pick—oak-stave finished and full of character—because sometimes a bottle is a bookmark for a weekend you don't want to forget. If you're into cycling routes through Kentucky, bourbon culture, Buffalo Trace lore, and campfire community, this one's for you. That's where a generous friend handed us a bucket-list dram of Old-Fashioned Copper and reminded us why community makes bourbon culture special.Back at the booth, we recorded with Stephen Beam and Stephen Fontaine, talked Yellowstone's new bottle, and still found time to explore McBrayer's Cedar Brook and other up-and-comers on the festival grounds. The street festival lit up Frankfort—fire jump ropes, music, and a surprise gift: a Cathedral French Oak finish bottle signed by Steve Nally, tied to Notre Dame's restoration. Send us a textIt's hard to put into words what this weekly podcast about bourbon has meant to me over the past 8 years and 400 episodes. I've laughed a lot (too much, for some people), cried (too much, by own measure), and brought the bourbon industry to light in the best way I have always sought fit. This week, as I continue to make the same mark, I review this year's edition of the Four Roses Small Batch Limited Edition. Should this be heralded as one of the best releases of 2025? How do three 13 year bourbons compose themselves against a 19 year batch? Is it possible that I've just been waxing poetic this whole time because I'm worried that I need to fill space but am also hoping that you've read this far (comment below if you have)?!?!? Learn how Church Street makes every beer "crushable," from lagers and sours to barrel-aged Belgians and THC hop water.Church Street Brewing Company Head Brewer Sean Gregor and Director of Pints & Publicity Amanda Steinbraker discuss how German brewing traditions, sustainability, and creativity come together in their lagers, sours, barrel-aged Belgians, and even THC hop water. They begin by sharing how Sean's father fell in love with German beer styles like Munich Helles, why the brewery is named Church Street even though it isn't located on one, and the story behind their stained-glass beer labels. Sean then tells his personal journey from college swimmer to becoming the youngest head brewer in the United States, his early work at Bircus Brewing in Kentucky, and the lessons he brought home to Church Street. He also explains how he improvised with custom brewing equipment, and how the brewery recycles spent grain as cattle feed. After the beer break, Sean dives into the science of decoction mashing and why it brings more malt character compared to single infusion. The team tastes through Heavenly Helles, brewed with German ingredients to replicate the Munich water table, and talk about why lagers are making a comeback. They sample Itascafest Märzen and explain the difference between Märzen and Festbier, discuss why Oktoberfests often run out before October, and move on to the Blueberry Vanilla Sour, which uses real fruit purée and natural vanilla. Next is Righteous Red Ale, a hybrid of Irish Red and American Red styles that balances English malt richness with American hop brightness.Later, Sean explains how he sources hops from the UK, New Zealand, and local farms, and Amanda shares how a mislabeled hop variety once led to a happy brewing accident. They also introduce listeners to the history of Zoigl beers, their collaboration brew honoring the late Mark Naski, and the story behind their Pigeon Row THC hop water, a sugar-free, calorie-free alternative that some say is perfect for diabetics. Amanda shares a brilliant trick for turning a can into THC ice cubes for low-dose drinking. Sean and Amanda also talk about their relationship with Four Roses for bourbon barrels, how Church Street keeps even high-ABV beers crushable, and why water chemistry is so important to brewing clean lagers. Plus: learn about the brewery's two taproom experiences, The Steeple and Barley House, and why their Bavarian pretzel with house queso is a must-try. Before diving in, the guys chat about bottles, movies, and the never-ending Pixel vs. iPhone debate. On Whiskey World News, Bryan shares an email about A. Smith Bowman's newest Abraham Bowman release, this time finished with Hungarian Oak. And on What Whiskey Would You Choose?, Bryan asks: Which distillery do you choose — Four Roses or Heaven Hill? You've heard us talk about Four Roses Single Barrel / Barrel Strength picks many times over. The fact that we've never reviewed one for the podcast is just plain crazy. This week, we taste and review a pick from Bros Liquor in California. Our very own Kenny Mills was part of the pick team. So, tune in to hear our thoughts about this 9.5 year, 122.4 proof OESQ recipe barrel pick. It's safe to say that OESQ isn't traditionally one of the more sought after recipes, but our thoughts on this one might catch you by surprise. In this episode, we also recap our time at the Hoochenanny Whiskey and Music Festival. We had a great time and hope you'll enjoy hearing about our experience. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

Send us a textWhen bourbon crosses borders, something magical happens. Four Roses Super Premium represents a fascinating cultural exchange—a Kentucky distillery crafting something uniquely positioned for Japanese palates. This rare expression, never officially distributed in America, reveals how whiskey adapts to different cultural preferences. After uncorking this elusive bottle with Japanese lettering, we dive deep into Four Roses' remarkable production methods. Unlike most distilleries, Four Roses meticulously creates ten distinct bourbon recipes using two mash bills (high-corn "E" and high-rye "B") combined with five proprietary yeast strains. Each strain imparts specific characteristics—delicate fruit, rich fruit, spice, floral, or herbal notes—creating a flavor matrix that allows for precisely tailored bourbon expressions. The Super Premium itself delivers an experience quite different from American bourbon expectations. At 86 proof, it offers gentle vanilla, subtle peach notes, and remarkable drinkability without the robust oak and high-proof heat Americans often seek. This lighter profile likely represents a deliberate adaptation for the Japanese market, where whisky traditions favor more delicate profiles. We speculate that its composition includes 80% eight-year and 20% ten-year bourbon, possibly blending all ten Four Roses recipes into a harmonious whole.Beyond the whiskey itself, this tasting opens fascinating conversations about international spirits markets. Why do distilleries create market-specific expressions? How do tax structures influence proof points across borders? And most intriguingly—what can we learn about our own preferences by experiencing whiskey designed for different cultural palates?Whether you're a bourbon enthusiast curious about international expressions or simply someone who appreciates the cultural dimensions of spirits, this exploration of Four Roses Super Premium offers a unique window into how a classic American spirit transforms when crafted with global sensibilities. Join us for this cross-cultural whiskey journey and expand your understanding of what bourbon can be.

Anyone else experiencing some deja vu? About this time last year, we reviewed the Father's Day release from Four Roses. Still dawning the language, "raise a glass to the man who raised you well," this years limited offering was made up of numerous OBSF single barrels that were roughly 15 years old and between 109-118 proof. This distillery only release has become a tradition, but, is it worth the time and effort it takes to get your hands on a bottle. We'll give you our perspective in record time. Also, please excuse our audio. We were trying out some new microphones and Anthony had his on backwards for the duration of the episode. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
Send us a textIn this episode of Bottles & Bites Without Borders, Rob dives deep into a hot take: You don't need to chase the latest $90 craft bottle to experience the full spectrum of what bourbon has to offer. From the bold spice of Wild Turkey to the mellow richness of Maker's Mark, the legacy distilleries—Wild Turkey, Old Forester, Jack Daniel's, Four Roses, Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, and Maker's Mark—have been crafting iconic bourbons for generations.Rob breaks down why these historic houses still deliver the best in flavor, quality, and value, and makes the case for skipping most craft bottles that often come with higher price tags and inconsistent results. It's a candid conversation on tradition, marketing hype, and putting your whiskey budget where it counts.
Today the crew review and compare the same yeast strand, but different Four Roses Barrel Strength Mashbill OBSK vs OESK. What is your favorite yeast strand?

MONEY & WEALTH! Chris kicks Episode 92 off with a (clearly very legitimate) pyramid scheme sales pitch to Amanda and Matt, who prove, yet again, that there's a sucker born every minute. But the talk quickly shifts to hard-hitting money truths—childhood lessons we ignored, what “F-you money” really means, Rockefeller's quip about craving “just a little bit more,” and how ego sabotages our savings. Along the way, Amanda reveals her Cadbury Egg obsession knows no budget, Matt dreams of cruising in a Saab 900, and Chris suggests tipping valet drivers with $2 bills like a benevolent Bond villain. DRINKS IN THIS EPISODE:CLASSIC DAQUIRI >> 2 oz light rum, 1 oz fresh lime juice, ¾ oz simple syrup. In a cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously until well-chilled, strain into a coupe, and enjoy this bright, citrusy nod to Hemingway, JFK, and warm spring nights.THE WHITE LADY>> 2 oz gin, ¾ oz triple sec (or Cointreau), ¾ oz lemon juice, 1 egg white. Dry shake, then shake with ice, strain into a coupe. The once-maligned White Lady gets her long-overdue redemption.MINT JULEP >> 2 oz Four Roses bourbon, ½ oz demerara simple syrup, Fresh mint (muddled + garnish). Muddle the mint with the demerara syrup in the bottom of a Julep glass and then discard the mint. Pour in the bourbon, stir, and then pack the glass with crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and serve with a metal straw. Enjoy the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby while making a reckless bet on the longshot to win it all.If you've been enjoying the 3Q3D podcast, please subscribe and consider giving us a rating, a review, or sharing an episode with a friend.
