Have you ever thought about how sport can help build character and teach you resilience? Well today I'm chatting to Matt Rizzo about the lessons being involved in athletics has taught him. In this chat you'll hear how Matt got involved in athletics and how at 18 years old he became the winner of one of Australia's most famous running races, the 2017 Stawell Gift. Coming from the same high school, being influenced by some of the same teachers, just a few years apart. It was incredible being able to reflect with Matt on some of the pivotal moments in his sporting journey. A notable shout out goes to one of our teachers Nige Knighton who made a huge impact on both our sporting journeys, there's actually two episodes with Nige back in season two if you'd like to hear some of his wisdom, but for now… lets jump into the chat with Matt.
Chicago, 1959. In Episode 45 we've reached out to a number of people involved across the spectrum of athletics... athletes, a coach, a health professional and sports administrator to gauge the impact of COVID-19 and in particular life under Stage 4 restrictions. As expected this hasn't been easy for any of us, but the resounding theme through the interviews is one of hope, positivity, and resilience. Whether it's been a change to your ability to access facilities, see your coach & squad or even in one case totally changing the way you do business, the lessons and experiences we'll take away from 2020 will be ongoing and continue to impact our lives and sport for years to come, if not permanently. Our thanks to Catherine Mendes, Peter Benifer, Ella Hose, Craig Wallace, Alice Baquie and Matt Rizzo for sharing their stories and opening up about the impacts on their personal, professional, and sporting lives. Each story is unique in its own way, but the common message around adjusting to restrictions and just getting on with it, typifies the response that will hopefully see Victoria emerge from this phase in the coming weeks. Sean and Tim also wrap the podcast with some of the international news and the positive moves Athletics Victoria is taking to keep athletes, coaches, officials, and athletics fans engaged. Charlie Rizzo’s dad died about twenty-five years ago, but he remains a constant presence in Charlie’s life. As a very young boy, Charlie’s mother and father split up, and Charlie’s mom took him to Los Angeles, leaving his father, Matt Rizzo, who was blind, back in Chicago. For awhile, Charlie wasn’t even sure he had a father. But one day, Matt and his driver showed up in California and took Charlie for a ride ... all the way back to Chicago. Matt's "kidnapping" of Charlie sparked a custody battle, and ultimately the judge allowed Matt to visit his son regularly as long as they stayed in the state of California. This was the beginning of Charlie's lifelong friendship with his father – and of a dream that started with Matt, and is now carried on by Charlie. Produced in 2007.
