[15x4] This week, we're venturing into the neon-lit streets of 1990s Pittsburgh to discuss a cult classic that blends mobster tropes with fangs: John Landis's Innocent Blood. We follow Marie (Anne Parillaud), a vampire who only feeds on "bad guys", as things get messy once she fails to properly finish off a ruthless mob boss, Sal "The Shark" Macelli (Robert Loggia), leading to a literal vampire mafia takeover. And making his debut on the show to talk about this overlooked Landis movie, it's film writer and podcaster Tim Coleman...

This week, Patreon supporter Matt Bates, the Black Country Vlogger, brings us Innocent Blood (1992) for our Pain and Pleasure theme -- a film that revels in the push and pull between the two. Innocent Blood (1992) came about in a roundabout way, which is fitting for a film that defies easy categorisation. John Landis had originally been developing a vampire project called Red Sleep -- a wild premise about Las Vegas being run by vampires -- before Warner Bros. passed and handed him a first-time script by Michael Wolk. The film had an entirely different trajectory before Landis came aboard -- Jack Sholder had been set to direct with Lara Flynn Boyle and Dennis Hopper in the leads before creative differences saw all three replaced. Landis cast French actress Anne Parillaud fresh off La Femme Nikita, and filmed primarily in Pittsburgh's Little Italy neighbourhood after a location visit changed his original plan to shoot in Philadelphia. The MPAA initially slapped it with an NC-17, forcing further cuts to secure an R rating. Landis described his vision as "a Hammer film directed by Scorsese." It opened in September 1992 to a modest domestic gross but has since built a devoted cult following among fans of horror-comedy and 90s vampire films.Find Matt here - https://www.youtube.com/c/blackcountryvloggerTRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a world where the streets of Pittsburgh run red... one woman has a code. She is Marie. She is beautiful. She is deadly. And she only eats bad people. But one night she makes a mistake. She doesn't finish the job. And now the most dangerous mob boss in the city isn't just angry... he is immortal.Sal Macelli is back from the dead and building a vampire army from organised crime. Marie has no choice but to team up with one increasingly bewildered cop. Because you cannot arrest something that cannot die. And you cannot plea bargain with a monster in an Armani suit.FUN FACTS ABOUT INNOCENT BLOOD (1992)Despite revolving around vampires, the word "vampire" is never once spoken in the filmDario Argento, Sam Raimi, Frank Oz, Tom Savini, and Steve Johnson all have cameosScream Queen Linnea Quigley appears as a nurse alongside her then-husband Steve JohnsonLandis hid his recurring "See You Next Wednesday" joke on a marquee in the filmThe glowing vampire eyes used reflective contact lenses combined with a beam-splitter techniqueA POV flying shot was lifted directly from Dario Argento's Opera -- who also has a cameoChazz Palminteri appears in a supporting role -- a Godfather reunion crossed with The SopranosBy 1992, Landis hadn't directed horror since An American Werewolf in London -- an eleven year gapSUPPORT THE SHOWSupport the Show If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here. Rather than answers, this celebrates curiosity and openness. It affirms that becoming isn't about arriving, it's about staying awake to possibility. Core question: What does "more" mean to you now, and how will you make room for it? Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Stefoni Rossiter, retired educator, caregiver, and creative spirit. She shares how this season of transition has opened the door to deeper self-trust, creativity, and a more compassionate way of becoming. In today's episode, we discuss: Pay attention to what has always drawn you in. The things we were naturally curious about early in life often still point toward what matters most to us now. Looking back can help you notice patterns you may have overlooked and reconnect with parts of yourself that are still waiting to be used. Creativity does not have an expiration date. Whether it is sketching, journaling, cooking, gardening, writing, or building something with your hands, trying something new can open up a different kind of confidence. You do not need to be an expert to benefit from creativity. Your role can change without your value changing. A transition like retirement, caregiving, or a career shift can leave you wondering who you are without your old responsibilities. Identity can expand, and a new season does not erase the impact of the one before it. Self-care can be practical and personal. It does not have to look fancy to matter. For Stefoni, routines, movement, reading, gardening, and creative time all help her stay grounded, and that is a good reminder that self-care works best when it actually fits your life. You do not have to do it perfectly to do it well. Stefoni's willingness to try, fail, adjust, and keep going is part of what makes her story so relatable. That same mindset can help anyone loosen their grip on perfection and make room for growth. In this episode of GuyShrink, host Bill Roman sits down with friend and automotive industry professional Dennis Landis to explore what's so critical about critical thinking — and why most of us aren't actually doing it. Dennis shares how 20 years of solving complex manufacturing problems taught him that we waste enormous time and money attacking the wrong problems, driven by emotion, bias, and a rush to check the box. Drawing on the work of behavioral intelligence expert Chase Hughes, they unpack three powerful ideas: that humans are rationalizing creatures (not rational ones), that whoever controls attention controls meaning, and that self-mastery is a prerequisite for clear thinking. Dennis walks through real-world examples from the shop floor — including a tooling cost problem that took three years to solve because the problem statement itself was wrong — and shares practical techniques like replacing "why" with "how," deliberately proving yourself wrong, and inverting problems by asking "if I wanted this to happen on purpose, how would I do it?" Bill and Dennis also discuss the importance of face-to-face interaction, reading nonverbal cues, surrendering ego, embracing discomfort, and surrounding yourself with people who think differently than you do. Whether you're leading a team, navigating a relationship, or just trying to make better decisions, this conversation offers a grounded, no-nonsense look at what it takes to truly think well. “How would you feel if everybody's talking about you behind your back? You need to be talking to the actual patient.” Just days before our conversation for this episode, Briana Landis was on Capitol Hill advocating for the Multiple Sclerosis community and bringing real stories into rooms where decisions are made. Her work in Multiple Sclerosis advocacy continues to push for better research, access, and patient-centered care. This is nothing new for Briana. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at just 4 years old, she has spent her life turning her lived experience into action. In this episode, Briana, now 28, shares what it means to grow up with MS, step into advocacy, and speak up in spaces where patient voices are often missing. You know that feeling when your to-do list never actually ends… it just resets the next day? And somehow, even when you're doing everything right, you still feel behind. In this episode, I'm talking with Christine Landis about something that can feel both incredibly logical and deeply uncomfortable: buying back your time. Because let's be honest—most of us were never taught that we're allowed to get help at home. We've been conditioned to believe that doing it all is what makes us a “good mom.” But what if doing it all is actually what's draining your joy? Christine, a former CEO and founder of Proxy, shares how delegation at home isn't about being “extra” or “bougie”—it's about creating space for the life you actually want to live. We dive into the emotional resistance, the guilt, and the real cost of trying to handle everything yourself—and how small shifts can completely change how you experience your days. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why moms struggle more with delegating at home than they do at work The difference between physical tasks and mental load—and why both matter Signs you're not buying back your time (even if you think you're “managing”) How control and perfectionism keep you stuck doing everything yourself Simple ways to start outsourcing without feeling overwhelmed The truth about “mom guilt” when it comes to paying for help Why knowing how you'll use your free time makes letting go easie Why This Episode Matters So many moms are running on empty—not because they're doing something wrong, but because they're doing too much. And the hardest part? We've been taught to see that overload as normal. Buying back your time isn't about doing less for your family. It's about creating more space for connection, energy, and joy—with your family. Because your kids don't need a mom who does everything. They need a mom who isn't completely drained by everything. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Stephanie Baker, Chief Experience Officer and artist. She highlights her journey of moving beyond achievement, sharing how embracing vulnerability, creativity, and leading with empathy has redefined what true success means, for herself, her teams, and those she mentors. In today's episode, we discuss: Reimagine your definition of success. Step back from titles and checkboxes. Ask yourself whether your work aligns with your core values and your true impact. When your work is a reflection of who you are, fulfillment finds you, not the other way around. Lead with empathy and inclusion. Performance isn't just about KPIs; it's about how people feel in your presence. When you foster empathy, inclusion, and psychological safety, you build teams that are resilient, innovative, and engaged at every level. Make becoming a lifelong pursuit. You don't have to have it all figured out. The most effective, impactful leaders are those who stay open to growth and keep redefining who they are—at work and in life. Protect your energy unapologetically. Learn to say "no"—and realize that it's a complete sentence. Being deliberate with your time and focus allows you to say "yes" to what truly matters and show up at your best. Give yourself permission to explore new interests. Try picking up something new—painting, mentoring, creating. You never know which hidden strengths or sources of joy are waiting for you. (Check out her paintings in the show notes. She is GIFTED!) "Having the freedom to decide this is what I choose to do now or another time, that to me is that time-rich feeling." In this episode, Heather and Christine Landis gently (and sometimes unapologetically) challenge the way we think about productivity, responsibility, and the stories we tell ourselves about success. Together, they unpack the invisible labor so many women carry, the exhaustion of decision fatigue, and the cultural conditioning that convinces us we must do everything ourselves to be "good" partners, mothers, leaders, or humans. This isn't a conversation about outsourcing tasks for the sake of efficiency; it's about buying back your time so you can reclaim your energy, your joy, and your capacity to live intentionally rather than by default. Christine invites us to reimagine what it means to be "time rich," to stop apologizing for spaciousness, and to consciously plan for joy as a foundational part of an aligned life. What to listen for: ✨ Understanding house management, and giving ourselves permission to outsource ✨ Identifying the invisible load you carry and the decision fatigue that comes with it ✨ Becoming "time rich" by letting go of the need to do everything yourself "It's not about delegating laundry or delegating meal prep. It's about reclaiming your fucking life and reclaiming how you want to feel." ✨ If we want men to step up, we as women need to better value our own time ✨ Giving yourself more capacity with that time, not doing more of something else ✨ The importance of not judging or defending the spaciousness you bought back "Planning for joy is really important. You can't be reactionary. You have to put that thought out there and look ahead into your week, your month. It doesn't have to be this big five-year plan, but even just protecting your time on a doable, regular basis." ✨ Focusing on the life you want rather than living by default ✨ Planning for your joy instead of being reactive to what's coming at you ✨ Valuing yourself and your time differently, and the challenges that come with it About Christine Landis: Christine Landis is the founder of Peacock Parent and the creator of Proxy, a text-based thinking partner for home life. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Elizabeth Haggerty, EVP Customer Solutions, America's Division, CRH. She highlights how navigating life's and career pivots, unexpected business challenges, and a life-changing health diagnosis led her to discover untapped reserves of courage and resilience, offering real-life strategies to thrive through uncertainty and continual growth. In today's episode, we discuss: Adopt the "one foot in, one foot out" approach. When considering a new role or industry, bring core skills you already have while stretching into new territory, so you're growing without completely untethering yourself. Let your setbacks refine, not define, you. When a business is sold, or a role ends abruptly, even through being fired, treat it as a painful but powerful pivot point, not a verdict on your worth or future potential. Integrate joy and self-care into your life. Make space for passions, hobbies, and relationships outside of work. These experiences not only enhance your overall well-being but also give you energy and perspective to face professional challenges with renewed spirit. Redefine your identity beyond job titles. Reflect on how external achievements and positions have shaped your sense of self. Shift your focus from titles to your skill sets, values, and unique contributions. This empowers you to navigate transitions and derive fulfillment from multiple aspects of life. Release the need to do everything alone. Accept that asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. Rely on your team's expertise and focus on asking insightful questions. This collaborative approach strengthens outcomes and develops your leadership. In Episode 466 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Joshua Landis, professor of Middle East Studies and director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, about the US-Israel war against Iran, what it reveals about American strategy in the region, and why the absence of a clear theory of victory raises the specter of yet another catastrophic regime-change war in the Middle East. Kofinas and Landis examine the competing narratives surrounding the conflict — from the argument that the Trump administration was dragged into war by Israel, to the theory that Washington concluded Iran would never voluntarily relinquish its nuclear program, to speculation that the campaign is part of a broader grand strategy aimed at neutralizing a Chinese forward base in the Middle East ahead of Trump's summit with Xi Jinping. They also discuss why Iran's regime is far more institutionalized and resilient than the Arab governments the United States has previously sought to topple, the historical lessons of America's last four regime-change wars — Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya — and why the pattern of civil war, refugee crises, and strategic blowback that followed each of those interventions is likely to repeat itself in a country of over 90 million people. The conversation closes with an examination of the broader regional realignment now underway, including the emerging Turkey-Saudi axis taking shape in response to Israeli dominance, the dangerous irony of simultaneously abandoning the Syrian Kurds while attempting to arm the Kurds of northern Iran, and the most plausible optimistic and pessimistic scenarios for how this conflict ultimately resolves. In this episode of Allyship in Action, Julie Kratz is joined by HBR writer, executive and team coach, Kathryn Landis, to explore capacity erosion—the gradual depletion of energy and focus facing today's leaders. In an era of constant change and cognitive overload, Landis shares how leaders can reclaim their impact by shifting from micromanagement to intentional empowerment and strategic reflection. Key Takeaways Focus on Your "$100 Activities": Leaders often gravitate toward low-impact tasks for a quick sense of productivity. Reclaiming capacity requires identifying the high-level strategic work that only you can do. "Get really clear on what's the work that only you can do... what you actually could be focusing on that's going to move the needle the most is perhaps working with your cross-functional colleagues, the other members of the C-suite, to strengthen those ties." — Kathryn Landis Empower Your Team Through Clarity: High-performing teams thrive on a clear purpose and defined decision rights. To reduce your own workload, ensure your team understands exactly what they own and what success looks like. "Do people have a clear purpose? Do people know why they're a team? Most people know what their job description is... but I was leading an off-site last week; they didn't know what their team goals were. They don't know what success looks like." — Kathryn Landis Prioritize the "Lamp Post" for Reflection: Intentional reflection is a non-negotiable for effective leadership. Creating a dedicated space to process information—even just by talking to a metaphorical lamp post—can provide significant mental clarity. "If someone would go and speak to a lamp post for an hour every day at the same time, they'd get 60% of the benefit of coaching... just creating the space and time to be intentional about where you're spending your time, reflecting on what you're doing." — Kathryn Landis Connect with Kathryn and take her free team assessment here: https://kathryn-landis.kit.com/3dcf1c4440
Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Melissa Muir, acclaimed jewelry artist and teacher. She highlights how embracing life's unexpected pivot points opens new paths for creativity, personal growth, and transformation. In today's episode, we discuss: Honor your pivot points. Notice the moments whernt feels like a dead end. What would be different if you chose to see it as a time to redesign? Use every closed door or "mistake" as information for your next step. Allow creativity to be learned. Release the belief that you're "not creative" and give yourself permission to practice, experiment, and grow your skills one imperfect attempt at a time. Come home to your own truth. Gently question inherited beliefs, rules, and expectations so you can build a true relationship with yourself, the divine, and others that feels loving, spacious, and genuinely your. Choose communities that help you flourish. Intentionally seek out people who are curious, creative, and kind, knowing that "creativity breeds creativity" and you don't have to do it alone. Talk gently to your younger self. Revisit the bullied, lonely, or hurting version of you and let them know what's coming, so you can release old pain and stand more fully in who you are now. Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with you as I launch the new "Still Becoming" series. I highlight how the journey of growth and self-discovery continues long after success is achieved, inviting you to explore the moments of untapped courage, unexpected opportunities, and personal evolution that unfold beyond traditional milestones. In today's episode, we discuss: Explore life beyond achievement. Reflect on the moment when hitting goals and earning recognition stopped answering everything, and consider whether it's time to redesign what success looks like for you now. Listen for your quiet evolution. Notice the subtle inner shifts, new perspectives, expanded freedom, unexpected gentleness with yourself, that change how you see your work, your impact, and what's truly possible. Let the unexpected become a doorway. Revisit the chapters you never planned, a random elevator conversation, a surprise opportunity, a path you "stumbled into", that you now wouldn't give back for anything. Tap your untapped courage. Acknowledge the deeper reservoir of bravery it takes to step away from predictability, trust your inner knowing, and say yes when your path is no longer obvious or linear. Choose meaning over momentum. Ask where you're sprinting on autopilot and where you're ready to consciously trade speed for impact, alignment, and the kind of contribution that actually matters to you. Define what "more" means for you now. Let go of one-size-fits-all ambitions and get curious about your current version of "more" in this season—more joy, more presence, more service, more creativity—and honor that as valid and enough.
