Welcome to Notable Leaders Radio! I'm Belinda Pruyne, in this milestone 100th episode, I'm celebrating the incredible guests who've shared their wisdom, courage, and vulnerable stories over the years. In today's episode, we discuss: Discover the real journeys behind "overnight success" stories—Because you'll see that even the most accomplished leaders face setbacks and internal challenges, giving you permission to honor your own slow burn to success rather than compare yourself to unrealistic narratives. Those “overnight successes” actually take 15 years of hard work and pushing through whatever is in your way. Learn about finding and using your unique voice, especially in male-dominated industries (Ivy Slater's, Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz's, Michelle Russo's, Amy Conway-Hatcher's, Dr Mary O'Connor's, stories)—If you're struggling to stand out or be heard, their insights will help you leverage your strengths in any challenging environment. Hear diverse stories of joy, resilience, and strategic risk-taking—so you can build more joy, clarity, and growth into your own work, borrowing from actionable wisdom shared by a variety of leaders, from corporate executives to entertainers/authors to military figures, and the list goes on. See the power of “Being More You, Not Faux You” in tough situations (Amanda Hawkins' story)—You'll realize that authenticity isn't just a nice idea, but a winning strategy for building trust and influence with even the most senior decision-makers. Take away unique mindsets like architecting a life by design (Chad Lefebvre) versus a life by default—As a way to challenge accepted norms and intentionally create a fulfilling path, instead of just accepting what you're given. Understand how personal experiences outside of business (from dance to the board room, riding instructor to corporate executive…) can shape leadership strengths—Meaning you can tap into your own life story and skills for professional advantage, not just traditional credentials. Okay, today it's a very special episode. Firstly, because I'm talking about one my favourite films of the decade- John Landis' 'The Blues Brothers'- and secondly, because I'm joined once again by Liam Dempsey and Paul Willson, two of the hosts from Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast. And we have much to discuss with this film and beyond. You can certainly expect us to examine the careers of Landis and his leads, Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi (commenting on the films '1941', 'Ghostbusters, 'Beverly Hills Cop 3', 'Blues Brothers 2000' to name but a few). So sit back and relax, pour yourself an orange whip, and listen as we discuss a stone-cold classic.

Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with David Steele, Founder + CEO of One Wealth Advisors and co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group He highlights how applying the principles of service, goal-setting, and valuing people has shaped his journey from financial planning to building successful restaurant groups and supporting arts organizations. In today's episode, we discuss: True business success is rooted in serving others, not just making profits, because when work benefits others, it leads to deeper happiness and long-lasting impact, meaning you can feel good about making a difference while growing your business. Skills and principles are transferable from one industry to another, as David demonstrates by applying the same collaborative and organizational strategies across finance, food, and the arts, so you're not stuck on one path and can reinvent yourself in new fields with confidence. Pivotal life changes often start with self-awareness and honesty about dissatisfaction, like David's shift from being a successful stockbroker to a more fulfilling (but initially less lucrative) fee-based financial planning career. The lesson? It's okay, and sometimes essential, to pivot, especially if your values aren't being met. Caring for your team's well-being, even at a short-term cost, pays off through loyalty, retention, and greater future success, as shown by David's choice to keep his executive team during tough times, so you can build a lasting, supportive company culture. Guest Bio David Steele, Founder + CEO of One Wealth Advisors and co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group My primary role is as the co-founder and CEO of One Wealth Advisors, where we help people simplify their lives and achieve financial goals through Financial Life Planning. I am also the co-founder and Executive Chairman of Flour + Water Hospitality Group and the co-founder and Managing Partner of Great Gold Hospitality Group. Additionally, I bring extensive expertise and a range of resources to small business consulting, primarily in, but not limited to, the hospitality space. Alongside my teams, we support clients in various aspects of business development and operations to help them achieve their goals and vision. The culinary, health, arts, and entertainment worlds are particularly important to me, as reflected in my advisory roles with Noise Pop, Brilliant Corners, Rad Restaurant Group and Folk Studios. While my background may suggest diverse interests, everything I do follows a consistent, disciplined approach: working collaboratively with partners and team members, setting clear goals, developing and executing strategic plans to achieve those goals, and continually monitoring results to ensure success. Listening to him, I saw life through his eyes, opening me up to think differently. I'm curious if you will have the same experience. Drawing from Toni Morrison's novel Beloved and the ritual of communion, Pastor Tonetta challenges the false division between mind and body that costs us connection, joy, and presence. Discover how reclaiming your body as holy space can be an act of resistance against systems that try to define your worth through appearance. Whether you're wrestling with body image, seeking a healthier relationship with yourself, or curious about how embodiment connects to justice, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective on what it means to be fully human in a society obsessed with perfection.

Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Kevin Eikenberry, Chief Potential Officer of the Kevin Eikenberry Group and author. Kevin shares his journey from growing up on a family farm to becoming a successful leader and business owner. In today's episode, we discuss: Embrace the journey! Kevin Eikenberry shares how flexibility in leadership involves embracing the 'both/and' approach, allowing for flexible leadership. Let's navigate life's complexities with an open mind and a flexible heart. Context is everything! Consider the backstory; it could change your entire perspective. Kevin Eikenberry reminds us that understanding context makes us smarter and more effective leaders. Pause and reflect; you might discover a different truth. Life and leadership exist in the "gray area," not just in black and white. Kevin talks about the importance of embracing “both” rather than either/or, highlighting the complexity of life and leadership. This concept encourages flexibility and adaptability, which is crucial for effective decision-making and problem-solving. Focus on others can lead to greater success.. Kevin emphasizes the importance of shifting focus from oneself to others for personal and professional growth. This reinforces the value of empathy and collaboration in achieving success. Influences of the Past: Kevin shares a heartfelt reflection on how his father influenced his views on leadership and business. Growing up on a family farm, he gained firsthand experience in diverse leadership roles and decision-making from a young age. In today's episode of Notable Leaders' Radio, I explore strategies for designing the next chapter of your career and life in a constantly evolving marketplace. We dive into building powerful networks and uncovering the areas of learning that will enhance your relevance and impact. In this episode, we discuss: The Power of Releasing the Outcome: Shifting your focus from specific outcomes to purposeful actions can free you from the stress of rigid expectations. This mindset not only reduces pressure but also creates space for unexpected and rewarding opportunities, transforming how you approach both challenges and successes. Building Authentic Connections with Ease: Meaningful relationships develop over time through genuine interactions, not transactional exchanges. By allowing connections to flourish naturally without immediate expectations, you can cultivate a powerful network that brings unforeseen opportunities to your professional and personal life. Embracing Lifelong Learning and Experimentation: In rapidly shifting industries, relevance requires an unyielding commitment to growth and adaptation. Embracing new learning experiences with an open mind positions you to thrive amidst change, turning challenges into catalysts for advancement. Transforming Setbacks into Strategic Insights: Perceived failures are, in fact, your greatest assets on the path to higher success. Each setback provides valuable data and insights for course correction. By detaching self-worth from specific outcomes, you can maintain emotional resilience and strategic clarity. Commit to Action, Stay Open to Outcomes: The journey to your goals is where true fulfillment lies. Maintaining commitment to purposeful actions while embracing diverse outcomes ensures a rewarding experience, regardless of how the specifics unfold. Tune in to discover how to elevate your career trajectory with intention, resilience, and a mindset open to limitless possibilities. What happens when the spaces meant to welcome us become spaces we need to leave? Drawing from Jamar Tisby's #LeaveLoud movement and "The Color Purple," this episode dives into the complex dynamics of leaving religious institutions, toxic workplaces, and communities that no longer serve us. We explore a fresh take on an ancient story about standing in your truth, even when facing pushback from authority figures. Whether you're contemplating a major life transition or processing past spiritual trauma, this conversation offers a framework for understanding that sometimes, leaving isn't just okay - it's sacred. No guilt trips, no clichés - just honest talk about finding your way forward.
Babe Ruth is probably the biggest cultural figure of the 20th century. Nearly 100 years after his death, his name remains relevant. In 1922, after losing the World Series to the cross bridge rival NY Giants, Babe Ruth and Bob Muesel departed for a barnstorming tour of the Mid West. Tim Grover, a Mid West kid from Iowa took to this story and wrote a book about Bob and Babe's tour. The story is full of early 20th century greatness. Pete A Turner welcomes Tim Grover to the Break It Down Show. Get Tim's book Barnstorming Babe: A Slugger's Bumpy Trek Across Small-Town America on Amazon at amzn.to/4gGvOEt Babe Ruth could be his own worst enemy. After the 1921 World Series, the Bambino and teammate Bob Meusel began a barnstorming tour in the Northeast. The new baseball commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, had warned them against doing it, citing a ridiculous and seldom-enforced rule. Greed overruled logic, and they did it anyway. Landis responded by suspending both players for the first six weeks of the 1922 season. A year later, Landis had waived the rule. And after losing the World Series in 1922, Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel left the harsh glare of New York for an eighteen-game Great Plains barnstorming tour. Stops included Omaha, Kansas City, and Denver. But also Sleepy Eye, Pratt, and Tarkio. They played in sleet, rain, and snow, traveled overnight on “jerkwater” railroads, and tolerated endless civic celebrations. They hit monstrous home runs, played against formidable Negro Leaguers, and faced some great small-town pitchers. They also visited orphanages, raised money for the American Legion, and created lifelong memories for hardscrabble farmers who would have never otherwise had a chance to see a major league baseball player. The adventure kicked off with a spitball in Perry, Iowa, on Friday the thirteenth…

In Hollywood, the story beats of werewolf movies were codified in 1941 by a German-Jewish emigrant to Hollywood via London named Curt Siodmak, who wrote the seminal film 'The Wolf Man', starring Lon Chaney, Jr. 40 years later, John Landis made the most important and enduring and influential werewolf film ever made in 'An American Werewolf in London'. It was his follow-up to the one-two punch of 'Animal House' and 'The Blues Brothers'. He could make any film he wanted, with anyone he wanted. So he made a script he'd begun when he was 18 years old. A script he'd first discussed with an aspiring special effects and creature-design guy named Rick Baker in 1971. 10 years later, he'd found two unknown leads, hired basically the entire cast of an acclaimed touring production of 'Nicholas Nickleby', and called Baker on the set of another werewolf movie ('The Howling') and convinced him to decamp to England to work on 'An American Werewolf in London'. For his groundbreaking innovations on the film, Baker won the ver first Academy Award ever given for makeup special effects. Featuring a snappy, smart script, Landis' virtuosic comedy/horror chops, and an unexpected soundtrack of moon songs, 'An American Werewolf in London' is in a class by itself and is one of the most important films ever made. Other werewolf films of note and worthy of your time: 'Ginger Snaps' 'Wolfen' 'Wolf' 'Dog Soldiers' 'The Howling' 'The Wolf Man' (1941) 'Werewolf of London' (1935) "Werewolf of London' inspired Zevon's song 'Werewolves of London'. Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers had watched the film and told Zevon jokingly that he should write a song with that title and start a dance craze. And as far as listicles go, this one is well-reasoned by someone who knows their werewolf films: The 25 Best Werewolf Movies

On the morning of March 20, 1927, nine-year-old Lorraine Snyder was awakened by the sound of gentle knocking at her bedroom door and when she opened it, she found her mother bound and gagged on the floor. According to the girl's mother, Ruth Snyder, someone had broken into the house in the middle of the night, knocked her unconscious and tied her up, then murdered her husband, Albert. Ruth claimed the motive was robbery, but investigators were immediately suspicious of her. Not only was there no sign of forced entry, but Albert's murder had been particularly brutal and appeared personal. A day later, when police found Ruth's supposedly stolen items hidden in the house, her story started to fall apart. The murder of Albert Snyder had everything depression-era Americans were looking for in a media distraction—sex, extramarital affairs, fraud, and murder. From the moment Ruth and her boyfriend, Judd Gray, were arrested for the murder of her husband, they were thrust into the spotlight and would remain fixtures on the front pages of the papers across New York up to and including the final moments of their lives.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBeckley, Zoe. 1927.
