In this 2014 podcast Jennifer Williams talks to two Hawthornden Fellows: Lynn Davidson and Alyson Hallett about where they come from, loneliness versus aloneness, and their current and upcoming work. Lynn Davidson's fiction and poetry has appeared in journals and her short fiction has been broadcast on national radio. Davidson has received several grants and fellowships to develop her work, including the 2003 Louis Johnson New Writers' Bursary from Creative New Zealand. She has published collections of poetry, and her novel Ghost Net was released in 2003. Davidson also works as an educator and tutors short fiction and poetry both online and in the classroom. Alyson Hallett‘s work spans different continents and art forms. She has a poem carved into Milsom Street pavement in Bath, words etched into glass in a library in Bristol, and she runs the international poetry and public art project The Migration Habits of Stones. She currently works as a Fellow with the Royal Literary Fund. Prior to this, she was a Leverhulme-funded poet-in-residence in the University of Exeter's Geography Department. Adam's Paternity Leave continues, so let's get down with some wildly problematic Jeremy Irons episodes? Patreon payments are frozen for the time being. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. After that first payment, you won't be charged again until we're dropping new content (which we'll warn everyone is coming), so if you want more of this it can be had, along with access to the fully uncut episodes from 100 to present and Movie Club episodes.Super famous Oscar-, Emmy-, and Tony-winning actor Jeremy Irons sashays through this week's wonderfully messed up episode of SVU—S12E13 Mask. He attempts to reckon with his out-of-control Cape Cod Summer o' Sex two decades prior. Of course, if it comes up in the course of an investigation on this program, you know the effects are still being felt of his indiscriminate adulterous boning of everything that moved in Falmouth, and this time, they've gotten his daughter and her lover attacked. This gleeful voyage into the world of sexual addiction is fertile ground for plenty of discussion about such subjects as: parsing the paradoxical simultaneous adoration of Tony Blair and loathing of George W. Bush, tattoo critique, teen boys having pervdar, the strange ol' days of Spice, summers on the Cape (and the corresponding nighttime water temps), the Kamadeva, and the broad, beautiful spectrum of paraphilias. Turns out, there's tons of fun to be had when Jeremy Irons is a recovering sex addict trying to get his addiction codified in the DSM-5.[Note: Apologies for the hints of static intermittently creeping into Josh's audio channel. As much was filtered out as was possible without making him sound like an alien. Meet the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage, a group of environmentalists who are proving age is just a number as they dive deep to and make a difference. Mary Grauerholz and Trish Corey join us to talk the good of making a difference right in your own backyard. Formed in 2017, OLAUG has been cleaning up ponds on Cape Cod from Falmouth to Chatham ever since. Gathering small teams of all-women swimmers, ages 64 to 85, they sweep along the shallows, to pick up beer cans, golf balls, fishing lures, waterlogged dog toys, hats, jackets, shoes, and occasionally a tire, cell phone or box of spent fireworks. They've been featured on NBC Nightly News, The Drew Barrymore Show, and NPR and now they're here to share their good time with us. If you're sitting around asking yourself if you're too old or it's too late, these proud powerhouses have a message for you: NOPE. YOU STILL GOT TIME. Hi there! Feel free to drop us a text if you enjoy the episode. In this episode we had the pleasure of speaking with Megan Faulkner, the Executive Director of Falmouth Road Race, Inc and the Asics Falmouth Road Race. Megan has been an integral part of this iconic event for over a decade, and today, she gives us an inside look at what makes this race so unique and beloved. From its humble beginnings in 1973, when it was started by a group of runners in search of a few beers, to today's world-class event attracting top-tier athletes, the Falmouth Road Race has grown into one of the most anticipated road races in the region. And its charity runner division has raised an astonishing $72M over the last decade for various charitable causes! One of the things that sets Falmouth apart is its festival atmosphere—despite being a 7-mile race, it has the energy and excitement of a full marathon. Megan talks about how the event has evolved over the years, with a range of community-centered activities like the mascot race and the track festival that offer fun for all ages. Plus, Falmouth Road Race Inc is non-profit entity that offers scholarships for high school students who volunteer, helping to build a future generation of athletes and volunteers.Another standout feature of the race is long-standing wheelchair division, allowing athletes with disabilities to participate and shine. And their Athlete Hosting Program ensures that elite athletes feel welcomed and supported throughout their race weekend. With its rich history and focus on community, the Asics Falmouth Road Race is more than just a race—it's an event that brings everyone together to celebrate endurance, camaraderie, and giving back. How Is Living in Maine Different Than Visiting?Maine is one of the most beautiful states in the country—and if you've ever visited, you probably already know that. The rocky coastline, charming lobster shacks, peaceful lighthouses, and fresh ocean air make it an unforgettable vacation spot. But what's it really like to live in Maine? As a local Realtor who helps people Make Maine Your Home, I've had this conversation with countless clients—many of whom fell in love with Maine during a visit and are now wondering if they should make the leap.Spoiler alert: living in Maine is amazing, but it's a different experience from visiting. Here's what you need to know if you're considering the move. 1. The Pace of Life: Vacationland vs. RealityWhen you're here for a week, it's all about coastal drives, seafood feasts, and soaking in the scenery. But living here means experiencing the rhythm of Maine life—slower, more intentional, and deeply connected to nature.✅ Remote work is on the rise here—Maine had one of the highest rates in the country in 2023.✅ Life is peaceful, but expect longer drives for essentials, especially in rural areas.✅ Winters are no joke—think snow tires, plowing, and prepping for the power to go out! 2. Cost of Living: More Affordable Than You Think?Compared to neighboring states like Massachusetts or New Hampshire, Maine's real estate is surprisingly affordable.
Jesus has given us this familiar parable to tell us that it is the Father who is "Prodigal": Extravagant with His Love and Mercy for us. John Newton was a slave trader who, over time converted to the Christian faith and wrote the lyrics to one of the most well known Christian hymns. (Amazing Grace - Judy Collins) The homilies of Msgr. Dr. Michael Bihari moved to Falmouth in 2001. He is a retired pediatrician, health educator and healthcare consultant. He created the organization's website and wrote most of its content and, during the COVID pandemic, wrote the Neighborhood Falmouth Cookbook. As part of his work to make Falmouth a healthier community for older adults, he worked with Neighborhood Falmouth to focus on Aging in Place as the organization's unique contribution to the town and to find ways to help older adults combat loneliness. In 2023, he was selected by the town to serve on the Falmouth Human Services Committee, which he currently co-chairs. It's a bright morning on the Falmouth seafront after a week of rain and wind. The air is still, the sunshine warm, yet the sea is still full of storm energy and crashes on the shore, followed by a seethe of pebbles as the waves retreat.
