141: How to Balance Entrepreneurship and Fatherhood with Mike Bruny and Jeremie Miller

In this episode, fathers/entrepreneurs Mike Bruny and Jeremie Miller join Charlie to talk about how they’ve learned to balance entrepreneurship and fatherhood. In addition to being fathers, both Jeremie and Mike have been pursuing entrepreneurial projects. In this episode, they talk about some of the challenges of being a dad, being an entrepreneur, being a hyper-creative, and juggling multiple different projects. Key Takeaways: [3:35] - Currently, Mike is working a full time gig, working part-time to get his MBA, and is father to a three-year-old son, Emerson. Before his son was born, Mike was working for Intel as a manager, and when it shut down and his son was born, he started working on projects and staying home to help raise his son. The biggest thing he noticed about fatherhood was a divide between a dad’s contributions and a mom’s. [5:22] - Jeremie is dad to a nine-year old son, Finn. He had the unique opportunity to be involved in the feeding aspects of his son’s life, and he ended up spending more time at home than “normal,” and instead of going back to a full time teaching job, he started his business and is currently a mix of entrepreneur and dad. [7:45] - One challenge comes from balancing work that makes money versus doing work that supports the family non-economically. There may still be some bias that the male journey should be focused on making money, and identity can be attached to that. Both Mike and Jeremie have struggled with “the way things are supposed to be” in terms of traditional gender roles and also some insecurity from a financial standpoint. [12:35] - Time versus money: Jeremie and his family discuss whether their family needs more time from him or more money. Though there is understanding from his wife, it is still a struggle to accept that she makes more money than him. Mike talks about how he struggles with feeling like he needs to give more of both, and how he will be able to do that. [15:20] - Charlie brings up the fact that they are pursuing their entrepreneurial ventures on less time than some of their entrepreneurial peers. Jeremie talks about the struggle of comparing his success to others who may be able to focus more of their time on their entrepreneurial ventures. [20:53] - How can child-rearing minimize, constrain, or affect creative cycles and the rate at which someone can create something? There is more at stake when there are other people (wives, kids) depending on your success. Mike talks about finding “smaller times” to get things done when he can, as well as practicing creativity in his interactions with his son; his struggle remains aligning who he is with his work. [25:30] - Jeremie found that when he began to compartmentalize his creativity and the time with his son, he was better and more focused on each. The experience for every dad is going to be different. [29:40] - Charlie and Jeremie talk about the difference between society today and how things have changed since the time they were raised. Mike adds how he has focused on some different language techniques, so Emerson can see the value of effort. And remembering these aspects for ourselves, not just conveying them to our kids, is very important. [35:30] - Once we’re aware of these aspects, it is important to create space to recognize and celebrate those things. In this space, we can work on growing and manifesting what’s possible now. [38:55] - We can’t be the best at everything all the time. Jeremie, Mike, and Charlie all talk about examples where one (or all) of our roles may fall slightly short of our expectations. [43:24] - There are several aspects of parenthood that don’t always get discussed. These types of things are most important to talk about and be honest about, even if the conversations are uncomfortable to have. [51:40] - It is important to understand that everyone will have different shame triggers. How you solve these particular challenges will be very fluid and different depending on the set of circumstances surrounding it. Finding your way of processing, discussing, and embracing these questions and challenges is the better way to go instead of not asking those questions. [53:20] - Final words from Mike and Jeremie: every day is a day to learn something new and you can do it! To all the dads out there, you’re modelling something unique and amazing for your kids. Even when you don’t feel like things are going right, you’re still bringing value tp your failures by sharing that with your children. Networking is not collecting contacts; networking is about planting relations. On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Mike Bruny who is a speaker, author, certified life coach, and an alum of the Boston-based Leaders of Color Development Program Inc. Mike believes we are all ambassadors and stand for ‘something,' so he is on a mission for individuals to discover and live their ‘something.' Mike's runs The New Art of Conference Networking, which helps conference organizers create the kind of environment that fosters people to make great connections. If you want to know how to make meaningful connections at your next conference or event, then this podcast has some awesome tips for you.   Main Questions Asked: -       How did you come up with the idea of becoming a networking ambassador and helping people make connections at conferences?   -       What is the ‘pivot'? -       Talk about how to deal with collecting business cards at a conference. -       Should we be strategic in who we take a business card from? -       What are your tips of the best kind of business card to have and what information to include? -       What are the ways people can be memorable at conferences? -       Where do you recommend people fall in the spectrum of how to dress for conferences? -       Share your tips for entrepreneurs who are running their own events and what they should do for networking and relationship building.  -       What do you think about setting up a group for people who will be attending a specific conference?   Key Lessons Learned: -       If you put in the work before you go to the conference there is a greater chance that you will connect with people.   Alone At the Conference -       When you are at a conference and you aren't taking to anyone, don't panic. Be happy to have a moment to yourself.  -       When you look confident and make eye contact, people will approach you. -       If you are alone and focused on your phone or laptop, people will avoid you as they will think you don't want to talk or be interrupted.   The Pivot -       When you are at a conference and find yourself in a conversation clique, make sure to keep your eyes open for people who also want to join the conversation. -       The way to let people into a conversation clique is to let them know there is an open space for them to join the conversation. -       If you are on the outside and are looking to insert yourself into an existing conversation, take in what is going on and look for an opportunity to make a point to add to the conversation.   Business Cards -       Having an idea of your personal goals at the conference makes collecting business cards a different process. -       Before you decide to ask for a card, get a good idea about the person, what they are working on, what's their biggest challenge, and if can you be of assistance to them. -       Ideally the best strategy is to take other people's cards because it gives you the power to take action and contact the other person. -       When you get a card, make sure to write a note on it to remind you of who the person is and why you want to stay connected. -       Receiving a business card is also an opportunity to think of whom within your network you can help other than yourself.   Tips For Your Business Card -       Mike says stay away from glossy business cards as they are difficult to write on. -       Use high-quality heavy stock and use a professional printing service. -       Having a photo on your card is great for after the event, as the person receiving it will have a better chance of remembering who you are.     Dressing for Conferences -       Dress for your comfort level as well as what you are going after. -       Women have the advantage when it comes to accessorizing as our eyes are drawn to the color contrasts. -       For men, you can have a strong pocket square game and forgo the tie.   How to Handle Networking At Your Own Event or Conference -       Get information on the people who will attend your event and find out what they want to get out of it. -       Ask attendees who they would most like to connect with. -       It used to be that attendees wanted to connect with people in their physical geographic location, but now people prefer to connect with others in the same industry.   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer. Mike Ambassador Bruny’s mission is to help individuals discover their greatness and live it out. His latest project, Brand Inside a Brand, focuses on personal branding for the working professional. He is the author of Move the Crowd: 30 Days of Hip-Hop Affirmations to Change Your Life, as well as a speaker, certified life coach, an alum of the Boston based Leaders of Color Development Program, The Partnership, Inc., and a stay-at-home dad to his 10-month-old son. He talks to Charlie about how he got to where he is today, lessons he’s learned along the way, and how to take action on something you’re passionate about and make it happen.   Key Takeaways: 2:08– Working at Intel is where Mike learned to become a professional speaker and where the idea of Brand Inside a Brand was started. 3:28 – Mike created his own curriculum helping people create a brand inside a brand while at Intel. 5:43 – One challenge you can run into is that companies don’t want you to be your own brand.  7:03 – People who have a good, strong brand of their own are people who you wouldn’t even realize work for a company because they’re so independent. 8:29 – Part of your brand and what Mike teaches is to learn how to be more entrepreneurial, not become an entrepreneur. 11:09 – The idea of working for an employer for the intended length of your working career is obsolete. Most people move on from project to project. 15:21 – It’s about finding a job where you can show up and be the best of yourself, doing the things that you’re interested in, and the things that you’re interested in generating value. 21:35 – Mike sees hip-hop as a language of people. 24:05 – Mike has a vision of getting Seth Godin and Jay-Z on a stage together. 26:00 – Mike’s next project in the works is a community called “No More Reasonable Doubt,” a space where students of color can go to get his work and seek help. 29:27 – Mike organized an event for Charity: Water and helped raise $10,000 for them.   Mentioned In This Episode: Brand Inside a Brand Intel Move the Crowd: 30 Days of Hip-Hop Affirmations to Change Your Life The Partnership, Inc.
