Today, I interview Donna Tashjian who suffered loss and abuse at an early age. She was forced to grow up fast and put aside what happened, focusing on adulthood without a true sense of her own identity. She hadn't been able to deal with her trauma, so her confidence was deeply hurt and she was very afraid of using her voice and making true connections with people. She struggled with the child voice inside her vs. the adult voice, knowing right and wrong but being made to feel like speaking up about it wasn't her place. So she stayed busy to block out those feelings. She eventually developed an appreciation for stillness, learning the importance of embracing her inner intuition, letting it out, and learning more about her true self every day. She came to develop a relationship with God and credits a church group for helping her find the courage to dig deep within herself to process and deal with her past. Jayne also shares the one practice, above all else, that helps determine whether or not you're going to have a good day. Quotables from the episode: When we ask the Lord for His lens through which to view our situation, it changes our perspective and frames our day. We are told to put on the armor of God, and put on the garment of praise, but those are intentional choices we make to do what God has told us to do to fight our battles. A key to having a good day is not just to be in the word, but to saturate your life with God's word, actually believe what you are reading, and apply it to your everyday life. We are told that in this world we will experience trials. In order to have a good day despite the trials, we must take a pre-emptive approach and do what we can ahead of time to help foster a good day. When we have a cluttered environment, we also then tend to have a cluttered mind and a cluttered heart. By taking the time to clear your area of clutter the night before, you can awaken in a state of peace, and the clutter and chaos around you won't distract you from your quiet time with God. Think about the fact that the Creator of the Universe wants to spend time communicating with you personally. Are you going to deprive Him of that? Our homes should be a place of refuge and calm away from the stress and the chaos of the world. Scripture References: Psalm 118:24 “This is the day the Lord has made. We are able to affect POWERFUL changes in our lives and in those around us, simply by rewiring our thoughts. First, we need to be aware of our thoughts. Make our vision so real that we can almost feel it as reality. Then, we need to rewrite the narrative that we tell ourselves. Instead of thinking negative thoughts like we will never reach our goal, we don't deserve it, etc., we need to think of the type of person we will be WHEN we reach our goal. Today, I interview Dr. Pelè who grew up during civil wartime in Nigeria. He and his family were refugees, fearing for their safety with every step, never sure of their next meal. In order to comfort her children, his mother would sing and tell stories. Dr. Pelè says this diversion created a change in his mindset as a child. Our youngest childhood years are the most formative, and while childhood trauma often imprints negatively and requires later work to overcome, Dr. Pelè's sweet mother helped him to flip that switch and see past his physical pain to focus on pure happiness. What a miracle! Later in the workforce, Dr. Pelè had a strange experience where someone was surprised at his boldness to speak his mind. His race was mentioned in a negative light, as if it meant he had less of a right to speak than others. He had never questioned his identity or validity before. He was able to go to school in search of better opportunities. Through his learning journey, he was able to reevaluate his passions and discover what he was truly meant to offer the world. Today, music continues to be a great source of strength and joy for Dr. Pelè-- his way of finding connection, clarity, and happiness. During World War II, Henry Beecher, an anesthesiologist serving in the U.S. Army, noticed that 32% of the soldiers he treated for horrific battle wounds felt no pain. A further 44% experienced only slight or mild discomfort, despite the fact they had shrapnel embedded in their bodies. Beecher hypothesized that the euphoria of surviving battle resulted in the release of a natural painkiller. When morphine was running low in Europe, Beecher thought he could harness the mind's seeming ability to produce natural painkillers in a different way by injecting soldiers who were about to undergo surgery with a simple saline solution, while telling the soldiers they were receiving morphine. About 90% of these patients underwent the surgery with little or no pain.Beecher's field-expedient placebo treatments would go on to open up decades of research into the power of our expectations. On today's show, my guest will walk us through that fascinating research, and how the connection between the body and the mind is a lot stronger and wilder than we know.His name is David Robson and he's an award-winning science writer and the author of The Expectation Effect: How Your Mindset Can Change Your World. David and I begin our conversation with how and why the brain operates as a prediction machine, and how the expectations it generates can shape the reality we experience. We then discuss how even when someone's pain or condition is very real, the placebo effect can have an equally real effect on their physiology — even when people know they're taking a placebo. We also get into the “nocebo effect,” where your expectation that a drug will have negative side effects, in fact produces those side effects.
