Dr. Jocelyn Jiao and Social Worker Mike Polisso of the Stanford Healthcare Palliative Team know the value of getting to know patients and families from the start of the care relationship. As part of an interdisciplinary team providing neuropalliative care for people and families living with serious neurological illnesses, they're supporting patients and caregivers and training other healthcare workers in palliative care. Here are some topics discussed in this interview: Jocelyn discussed the importance of finding out communication preferences when it comes to early conversations about advance care planning and disease progression. Mike highlighted exploring preference questions with patients and caregivers, and staying curious to create opportunities for personalized care. Asking what kind of medical information is important to someone to know can create communication styles that are comfortable for the patient and caregivers. Mike finds many people don't know that palliative care social workers have a variety of roles, including helping with complex medical decision making and dealing with family dynamics that are impacting care. Both Mike and Dr. Jiao recognize the need for ongoing self care to support the work they do. The Intersection of Health, Technology, and Innovation: Insights from CES 2023Key Takeaways:Las Vegas serves as a unique hub for tech shows, offering unparalleled access to groundbreaking innovations. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) showcased emerging trends in healthcare technology, particularly focusing on telemedicine and health-related wearables.Industry events like CES provide a platform for both exhibitors and media personnel, highlighting advancements across various tech sectors.Exploring the Vibrancy of Las Vegas's Tech CultureLas Vegas, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and bustling casinos, doubles as a significant epicenter for technology enthusiasts and professionals alike. One of the perks of residing in this electrifying city is the privilege of attending numerous tech shows, notably the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). As highlighted by Mike and Torya, who exude sarcasm and wit throughout their nightly podcast, Las Vegas hosts an impressive repertoire of events that attract media personnel, ensuring access to cutting-edge technology without the usual financial strain. "Basically, anything happening in Vegas, we can get press tickets to," quips Torya, emphasizing the advantageous position they enjoy as media representatives. This tech haven not only showcases the latest innovations but also well-kept insights from industry titans. CES, in particular, has grown substantially, spanning across multiple venues, including the Venetian, Park MGM, and the convention center. As Mike observes, the vast space accommodates displays by giants like Ford, portraying tech marvels over expansive plots reminiscent of football fields. However, CES offers more than grandeur; it bridges the gap between emerging technologies and end-users, demonstrating functionality and future potential.Health Tech Innovations: A Glimpse into the FutureThe realm of healthcare technology is undergoing a dynamic transformation, as evidenced by several exhibits at CES. Among the standout innovations discussed by Mike and Torya is the unmanned telemedicine portal, a marvel of modern tech enabling healthcare delivery without relying on traditional face-to-face consultations. "It was just amazing what it could do," Mike notes, highlighting its capacity for remote diagnostics and real-time testing. This innovation illustrates the profound impact of technology on healthcare, paving the way for more efficient, accessible medical services.Another intriguing piece of technology presented was a sleep apnea pillow, ingeniously designed to combat snoring using bladders and vacuum sensors. Torya and Mike dive into the technical nuances, acknowledging potential health concerns yet marveling at its promise to alleviate sleep apnea by adjusting a sleeper's position based on their snoring patterns. This innovation underscores a burgeoning trend towards consumer health tech products aimed at improving the quality of life. As Torya muses, "Two weeks seems a little long," regarding the training period required for the pillow's AI, reflecting a consumer's desire for seamless integration and rapid results.Wearable technology also occupied the spotlight. Devices like health rings offer real-time health monitoring, providing users with insights into their physical well-being. Mike resonates with the potential of these wearables, pondering how such devices, had they existed earlier, could have altered his lifestyle choices. "They should live longer and be healthier," he asserts, pointing to the proactive health management facilitated by technology.Unveiling Innovations Beyond the OrdinaryPreceding CES, the CES Unveiled media night offers a sneak peek into pioneering products, attracting a plethora of attention despite its exclusivity. The event, characterized by its intimate setting, allowed attendees to explore innovations unfettered by the usual crowds. Torya recalls a peculiar AI-driven Furby-like device, one among several playful yet technologically sophisticated products on display. This environment provides a unique forum for technologists to demonstrate inventions not yet mainstream, fostering an anticipation that extends beyond the convention's official start.CES Unveiled's variety didn't stop at toys. It encompassed practical tech, like a novel device promising universal compatibility during virtual meetings. Unlike traditional options that falter with proprietary software, this innovation champions seamless operability, capturing Torya and Mike's attention amidst a sea of intrigue. While reflecting on consumer frustrations with tech utility, the duo navigates a tapestry of experiences drawn from unveiled sessions, solidifying how pre-show events contribute significantly to the industry's knowledge ecosystem.Navigating Obstacles and Embracing UnpredictabilityCES isn't without its imperfections. Both Mike and Torya encounter unexpected challenges, from unaccommodating exhibitors to underwhelming product presentations. Reflecting on Narwhal's presence, characterized by aloof representatives, Mike laments, "They were less than interested in the product," gesturing towards a disconnect between the conceptual brilliance of a product and its promotional execution. This reality underscores an important lesson for exhibitors: effective engagement with potential consumers and media is crucial, particularly in environments teeming with competition and innovation.Beyond human interactions, the show tells tales of technical mishaps and logistical hurdles. "The problem with the tech…" remarks Torya, as she contemplates the long-term effects and prospects of fledgling technology. Observations of crowded venues and narrow passages are broached, with suggestions for better spatial arrangements as CES continues to expand. In their candid exchange, Mike and Torya reveal the intricacies of navigating large-scale events, balancing the excitement of discovery with the practicalities and hiccups of real-world execution.CES 2023 serves as a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of technology and its rippling influence on daily life. As society embraces these innovations, the fusion of health, convenience, and creativity promises to redefine what's possible, setting the stage for future advancements that continue to awe and inspire. Whether exploring the intimate avenues of a local conference or the vast expanses of a global summit, what remains undeniable is the passion driving the tech industry forward, reflecting humanity's unending quest to innovate and evolve.TimestampSummary0:00Exploring Tech Shows in Las Vegas as Media2:55Innovative Health Tech: Telemedicine Booths and Smart Sleep Solutions6:20Exploring Innovative Tech and Awkward Interactions at CES13:49Tracking Fat Burning and Weight Loss with Lumen Device15:00Exploring Tech Shows and Podcasting Adventures

Navigating Social Dynamics: Insights from "The Nightly Rant" PodcastEngaging with Society through Sarcastic LensesConversations are the bedrock of societal understanding, often laced with sarcasm, humor, and poignant insights. "The Nightly Rant," hosted by Mike and Torya, illustrates this dynamic vividly, tackling themes of social responsibility, interpersonal relationships, and the often blurry line between innocence and societal expectations. This article delves into these conversations, unpacking layers of meaning and insight while maintaining the engaging tone and style of the hosts.Key TakeawaysUnderstanding Intention vs. Impact: Differentiating between the intention behind an action and its impact on others is crucial in social interactions.Defending the Underrepresented: The importance of standing up for individuals who are bullied or marginalized, and recognizing the dynamics at play.Navigating Relationships Post-Conflict: Methods of resolving interpersonal conflicts emphasize understanding and compromise over grudges and resentment.Intention vs. Impact in Interpersonal DynamicsIn a world where actions often speak louder than words, understanding the difference between intention and impact can significantly alter the narrative of interpersonal relationships. During the podcast, Torya discusses a situation where a birthday surprise drastically goes wrong. The hosts explore how the intention to celebrate someone's birthday was overshadowed by the negative impact it had on the individual's emotions."I'm sorry, but am I the asshole for not seeing a good intention here? Am I overreacting?" – This quote from the transcript underlines the struggle of not aligning intentions with perceived impact. This theme highlights the complexity of human interactions, where good intentions can sometimes lead to unintended emotional harm. People often operate under their version of a "good deed," overlooking how those actions might be received or perceived by others. Understanding this dynamic is essential for fostering healthier relationships, where empathy and communication bridge the gap between intent and outcome. It's critical to not only act with good intentions but also communicate those intentions clearly to avoid misunderstandings. Thus, the broader implication of this conversation underscores the need for empathy and dialogue in everyday interactions.Defending the Underrepresented Against Social MarginalizationSocial dynamics often leave vulnerable individuals—especially those who do not conform to societal norms—unprotected against bias. Mike and Torya navigate a story of a young girl named Hannah, illustrating the importance of defending those who are easily marginalized or targeted due to their circumstances—highlighting a societal responsibility to stand up for them."Honestly, my daughter has come out of her shell drastically since Hannah has been around and I will take that as a win…" – This underlines how defending and nurturing relationships with the marginalized can lead to mutual growth and understanding. The hosts delve into how societal expectations define appropriateness, especially concerning behavior and appearance, and how these can create friction when misunderstood. John, a podcast figure, is uncomfortable with Hannah's attire and actions, labeling them inappropriate. Here, the show highlights the critical conversation surrounding societal norms and personal biases through the lens of comfort versus propriety.Protecting and advocating for individuals like Hannah resonate as a theme of social ethics, challenging listeners to reflect on their biases. Encouragingly, it also emphasizes empathy as a tool to unlock societal and personal growth.Navigating Conflict with Empathy and UnderstandingInterpersonal conflicts are inevitable; how they are navigated can make or break relationships. The podcast illustrates conflict resolution by criticizing the need for holding grudges, advocating instead for an understanding and problem-solving approach."Not enough people focus on preserving the relationship over their own grudge holding." – This encapsulates the transcript's strong advocacy for relationship perseverance over unnecessary conflict. Both Mike and Torya emphasize the importance of letting go one finds in conflict—that preserving relationships often requires absolving one's need to always be right. They draw attention to situations where ego and misunderstanding compound simple mistakes, transforming them into significant altercations. In any relationship, whether personal or professional, the ability to communicate feelings honestly and yet hold space for disagreements is a foundational skill. The podcast suggests that by focusing on preserving essential relationships over a need to hold grudges or be right, individuals can foster a more harmonious coexistence, leading to broader societal tolerance and understanding. The conversation also touches on how communication lay the groundwork for effective conflict resolution. By appreciating diverse perspectives and prioritizing the resolution of differences over sustained conflict, individuals can contribute positively to their social circles. Finally, these reflections from "The Nightly Rant" highlight the importance of dialogue, empathy, and protection of the underrepresented in society. Through masterful storytelling and genuine conversations, Mike and Torya invite their listeners to explore these themes critically and empathetically, offering insights that extend far beyond the scope of their narrative. As we move through our own lives, recognizing the power of intention, responsibility, and empathy becomes a navigational tool that enhances both personal and societal growth.TimestampSummary0:15Unexpected Birthday Surprises and Explosive News Distractions4:02A Birthday Surprise Gone Wrong7:09Family Drama Over Surprise Birthday Party Gone Wrong14:17Balancing Relationships and Grudges in Social Dynamics19:36Confrontation Over Inappropriate Comments at a Family Gathering23:44Protecting a Teen from a Potentially Dangerous Situation25:43Hidden Dangers and the Shock of Unveiled Secrets27:41Handling Inappropriate Behavior and Protecting Vulnerable Individuals32:42A Nightly Rant on Hunger and Podcast Ratings

This week on the Balanced Warrior Podcast, we have coaches Chris Berlow and Mike Mertens talking about the empty-nesting season of life.  Many couples fall in love, get married, have children, raise their children, and when the children move out, they forget why they were together.  They focused solely on being great parents and providing for their children, which is very worthy and admirable, but they didn't take time for themselves.  Thankfully, that is not the case with Chris or Mike; in fact, it is quite the opposite.  Now that they have adult children, they have more time to pursue other hobbies and interests.  Both Mike's wife, Alisa, and Chris's wife, Kathy, completed a full Ironman and have taken their hobbies to an extremely high level.  Alisa rides her bicycle all over the world, and Kathy is always out for the next challenge.  The key to having a solid relationship is understanding and appreciating others' interests and passions, or as Mike put it, having an “Open ‘Hobby' relationship.”  Meaning they support each other in their endeavors but always find time for each other.  Some key takeaways to look our for are… Always invest in your relationships. Children should enhance a relationship and not change it. It is important to support your spouse's endeavors, no matter how bizarre and extreme. Be sure to come back to a “Common Ground” in between adventures. Ask your spouse, when proposing an idea, “Are you sure you are ok with it?” Communication is key. Earn your “Spousal approval credits.” If you enjoyed this podcast, please don't be shy and share it with anyone who would benefit from its content.  Visit empoweredmastery.com for more information, or contact us at info@empoweredmastery.com should you have any questions about Balanced Warrior and Empowered Mastery.

Mike tells us that when payrolls are above expectations and participating rates are higher, then we can expect to see growth in risk assets such as equities, Fixed income products and the USD will rally.Rory shares his opinion on how a negative announcement can be a sign of a weakening economy the would require support that we could see equities and risk assets fall, Fixed income products gather strength and USD to drop. Both Mike and Rory agree that they think on Friday, for Junes NFP number it will be higher than the consensus of 225k and could be in the region of 240k-260k. This would be a positive announcement and could see growth in risk assets like equities.Find out more and join our free app

And they've written a paper along with Prof Dave Collins and Dr Jamie Taylor called “It depends coaching – The most fundamental, simple and complex principle or a mere copout?”. In this paper, the authors set out the arguments for Professional Judgement and Decision-Making (PJDM - the scientific representation of it depends coaching) as a genuine construct in coaching and, therefore, coach development. They do this through a critical consideration of three “pillars” or core constructs of PJDM. Namely, the concept of nested planning, the nature and use of knowledge in coaching, and the expression of expertise in coaching utilising a PJDM approach.

Aaron Rodgers looks zoned out during games while on the bench. Looking at the spread for Giants/Cowboys, Dallas is favored by 7 on Thanksgiving. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Aaron Judge winning the A.L. MVP. The Titans beat the Packers 27-17 in Lambeau. Derrick Henry ran for and threw a TD. The movie ‘80 For Brady' looks terrible. Jerry also told us about a Winnie The Pooh slasher movie. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the wind at MetLife and how Jared Goff stinks outdoors in the cold.  Hour 3: Qatar will only be selling non-alcoholic beers at World Cup Events even though Budweiser spent over $70 million as a sponsor. What are they going to do with the millions of beers over there? Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Packers losing to the Titans last night. Boomer said Aaron Rodgers missed some wide open receivers. Brian Cashman talked about trying to keep Aaron Judge. The Nets beat Portland with defensive basketball according to KD. Both Mike and the Mad Dog separately pronounce the Commanders as ‘Commodores'. Gio then did an impression of them singing ‘Easy'. In the final segment of the hour, Pat Boyle roots for England in the World Cup even if they are playing USA. The TNF broadcast is missing something. It's flat. Gio said it feels like the broadcasters don't want to be there. We also talked about streaming and who will get NFL Sunday Ticket. Streaming is not as lucrative as was first thought.  Hour 4: Last week on the NFL Today Bill Cowher criticized the Colts for hiring Jeff Saturday. Gio wonders if he will reference that this week. Boomer says he doesn't think he will.  He doesn't need to. Gio wants him to go after Pat McAfee. Al goes in the studio to wear the Bengals B&W helmet to call plays. Gio doesn't like when the Jets & Giants are on at the same time. Boomer said this is a signature moment for the Jets to beat the Patriots. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Aaron Judge winning the A.L. MVP. Brian Cashman was asked about Judge free agency and whether they made an offer yet. Aaron Rodgers was asked what it was like being booed at home: ‘Interesting'. Zach Wilson said nobody outside of the Jets building knows what they're talking about. Kenny Golladay is not worried about the fans booing him. Wink Martindale loves the energy of the Giants fans. The Nets won in Portland. The Devils win their eleventh straight. In the final segment of the week, our NFL picks with Yussef!

Mike McTee and Vince Slabe are Montana-based researchers who use cutting-edge science, writing, and educational programs to protect eagles in the American West and beyond. Both Mike and Vince are laser-focused on the surprisingly little-known issue of lead poisoning in bald and golden eagles, a problem caused mainly by eagles scavenging the remains of big game animals that have been hunted with lead-based ammunition. For example, a study conducted near Jackson Hole captured migrating golden eagles, tested them for lead, and found that 98% had elevated lead levels in their blood. Committed hunters themselves, Mike and Vince are devoting their professional energies toward finding sustainable, reasonable, and mutually beneficial solutions to this large-scale challenge. - Mike lives in Missoula and works as a researcher at the MPG Ranch, a large, privately owned ranch in the Bitterroot Valley that promotes conservation through restoration, research, education, and information sharing. He is also the author of the excellent new book "Wilted Wings: A Hunter's Fight for Eagles," which was recently published by Riverfeet Press. In it, Mike lays out the issue of lead poisoning in eagles in a compelling and easy-to-understand style, and he offers some clear and relatively simple paths to solving the problem. Mike has also written for The FlyFish Journal, Backcountry Journal, and Bugle, and he is a sought-after speaker on various hunting-related topics. - Vince is a Bozeman-based Research Wildlife Biologist with Conservation Science Global. He holds a Ph.D. from West Virginia University and recently published a wildly cited paper that details the implications of lead poisoning in eagles across North America. The paper, which was published in “Science,” describes how almost half of the bald and golden eagles sampled for the study had elevated levels of lead in their blood. More importantly, it explains exactly how increasing or decreasing levels of lead exposure will affect golden and bald eagle populations. We discussed the paper in our conversation, and I've also linked it to the episode notes. - This is a fascinating discussion that digs deep into a very specific issue– an issue that is largely under the radar here in the West. But if you zoom out from the details related to lead and eagles, and focus on the big picture, I think you'll agree that Mike and Vince are shining examples of the many smart, driven, level-headed people here in the West who are working hard to find win-win solutions to conservation-related challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, Mike's new book, and Vince's paper, and I hope you will too. - Be sure to check out the episode notes for a list of all the topics we discussed and links to everything. Oregon Football fans have been wondering for the last month whether or not one day the Ducks will end up in another conference. The Big 10 may seem like the biggest prize, but it's far from the only option Oregon could end up with in the coming years. What would happen if in the future there were truly just 2 "power conferences" that had little to no regard for geographical pairings? On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Mike Black, co-host of the 'Ducks and Dawgs' podcast. Mike shares why he thinks the Big 10 and SEC could one day break off from the NCAA and form their own playoff. If that were to happen, would Oregon be on the outside looking in? Both Mike and Spencer, if they were in charge, would see Oregon stay in the PAC. What teams outside the west coast could Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff add? They conclude by talking about some current events for Oregon Football with the 2022 season rapidly approaching. Recruiting has been a strength of Dan Lanning and his staff so far, but there's still one area where Duck fans are hoping he can find great success, even after the addition of Dante Moore. Lastly, Bo Nix may not have been the addition Oregon fans were hoping for this offseason--but at the very least he should be able to raise Oregon's floor at quarterback compared to last year.
