2026 Mid-Year Personal and Business Goals Check In

The City Girl Savings Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 20, 2026 19:21

It's hard to believe we're already halfway through 2026. One thing I've learned over the years is that time is going to keep moving whether we're paying attention or not. That's why I've made it a habit to set annual goals, revisit them regularly, and share my progress publicly. At the end of 2025, I shared my personal and business goals for 2026. Now that we've reached the halfway point of the year, it's time for a check-in. In this episode, I'm giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what's working, what's not, what goals are on track, and where I need to refocus for the second half of the year. We'll talk about everything from health goals and reducing stress to business growth, podcast downloads, content creation, and the realities of running a business in today's economy. My hope is that this episode encourages you to pause and do your own mid-year review. Because sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stop, reflect, and make intentional adjustments before the year gets away from you.   In this episode, we discuss: Progress toward my personal health and wellness goals What I've learned about slowing down, reducing stress, and prioritizing recovery My progress toward maxing out my Roth IRA in 2026 Why my honeymoon and wedding plans have shifted Efforts to reduce screen time and be more intentional with technology What the first half of 2026 has taught me about managing a full life The current state of City Girl Savings and our business goals Revenue, profitability, and navigating economic uncertainty Podcast growth, content creation, and audience building Why consistency matters even when results take longer than expected The mindset I'm carrying into the second half of the year   This episode is especially helpful if you: Set goals at the beginning of the year and haven't revisited them Feel behind on your personal or financial goals Want motivation to reset and refocus for the second half of the year Are working toward health, money, or business goals Need a reminder that progress isn't always linear Want a realistic look at what goal pursuit actually looks like   Why this matters: Too many people treat goals like a January activity. They set ambitious intentions, get excited for a few weeks, and then never revisit them until December. But real progress happens when you're willing to check in honestly along the way. A mid-year review isn't about judging yourself for what hasn't happened yet. It's about recognizing what's working, acknowledging what needs adjustment, and deciding how you want to move forward. Some goals will be ahead of schedule. Some will be behind. Some may need to change entirely. That's not failure. That's life. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is staying engaged with the life you're trying to build. Often, the willingness to reassess and adjust is what ultimately creates the results you're looking for.   Timestamps: [02:21] Raya breaks down her progress on her first personal goal of 2026 – improving her health for long-term functioning. This goal was harder to measure, but indicators of growth exist. [06:03] Raya's honeymoon and courthouse wedding timeframe has been pushed out. This goal likely will not be achieved in 2026.  [10:57] After 5 months of no breaks in daily workouts, Raya learned she needs to prioritize recovery (which means more frequent traveling)! [14:36] A business goal is to increase newsletter growth by 20%. Currently, this goal is trending about 4%. Raya shares things that can help improve this before the year ends.   Resources Mentioned: Episode #209: My Personal and Business Goals for 2026 Request a free money call with Raya City Girl Savings Personal Finance Portfolio Financial Focus Coaching Program   If you've been feeling behind on your goals, consider this your reminder that there's still plenty of year left. You don't need to wait until January to reset. You don't need a perfect first half of the year to have a strong second half. The truth is, most meaningful progress doesn't happen in a straight line. Some goals move faster than expected. Others take longer. Some priorities shift completely because life shifts. One of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years is that goals aren't just about achieving an outcome. They're about who you become in the process. They're about building consistency, learning from setbacks, making adjustments, and continuing to move forward even when things don't go exactly according to plan. So if you've fallen behind in an area of your life, give yourself permission to be honest about where you are without judging yourself for it. Then decide what the next best step looks like from here. Maybe that means recommitting to a goal. Maybe it means adjusting the goal. Maybe it means celebrating progress you've overlooked because you're too focused on what hasn't happened yet. Whatever your situation, don't let the first half of the year determine the second half. Take time to reflect. Acknowledge how far you've come. Make the adjustments you need to make. Then keep building. Remember: You are not behind…you are building. Consistency compounds. The steady work you're doing now is shaping your next level.

Consistency sounds boring until you realize it's the fastest path to trust and the easiest way to spot what's broken. In this CX Pulse Check episode, Jeannie Walters is joined by Nick Westergaard, host of the On Brand podcast and author of Brand Now and Get Scrappy, to look at what actually moves the needle in customer experience (CX) and brand building when attention is scarce and expectations are high.We dig into why major brands point to reliable basics as the key to their turnarounds: better training, smoother checkout, smarter inventory, and fewer “almost good enough” moments. Nick shares a simple mental model for this kind of work: stop chasing one huge “wow” and start raising the floor everywhere. When customers know what to expect, they don't just come back, they give you more grace when something goes wrong. Then we zoom in on neuroscience and cognitive load, the hidden force behind friction. Customers live in constant partial attention, and every extra step, confusing choice, or unnecessary question drains their mental energy. We talk about why simplification often beats adding features, how AI customer service earned distrust through bad early experiences, and what it takes to use automation without getting in the way.We close with brand storytelling and cultural moments, including what we can learn from campaigns that hit at the right time and why even a small change like a Spotify icon can spark big feelings in a deeply personal product. If you want a sharper CX strategy, better customer journey design, and a clearer brand experience, hit play, subscribe, and share this with someone who owns a form, a flow, or a brand decision. Build Momentum Without A Mandate

Most leadership advice assumes you already have the mandate, the budget, the buy-in, and the seat at the table. If you lead customer experience, you know that's often fiction. We're expected to react to requests from marketing, ops, and whoever our dotted-line boss is this week, then we're judged on outcomes we didn't have the power to drive.Showing up as a customer experience business leader, not just a CX advocate, starts with momentum. When we deliver visible wins that make other leaders' lives easier, we build authority even without the title. We talk through how to reframe “influence” so it's not about pleading for support, but about connecting to the moments and priorities that already matter inside the organization. From there, we get practical with a simple framework of mindset, strategy, and discipline. Mindset means building a CX mission that is a win-win for every leader you partner with. Strategy means improving the world your executives live in, like reducing service calls to increase efficiency or tying journey fixes to retention and revenue. Discipline means stopping the cycle of short-term reporting and instead linking what we do every day to long-term organizational goals.Measurements are not outcomes. The leaders who get funded become “translator-in-chief,” turning customer insights into clear business outcomes like cost-to-serve reduction, growth, churn prevention, and market advantage. If you're ready to build momentum without a mandate and use the second half of the year as a reset, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a fellow CX leader, and leave a rating and review so more people can find the show.Resources Mentioned:Order your copy of Experience Is Everything -- http://experienceiseverythingbook.comLearn more about CXI Membership™ and apply -- http://CXIMembership.comExperience Investigators -- https://experienceinvestigators.comEnjoyed the show? In this solo episode of The Association Insights Podcast powered by OnWrd & UpWrd, host Colleen Gallagher explores a simple but often overlooked truth: effective association communications don't start with content—they start with organizational goals.Too often, communications teams get caught in a cycle of emails, social media posts, event promotions, and campaign execution without stepping back to ask what those efforts are actually meant to achieve. Whether the goal is member retention, event attendance, sponsorship growth, advocacy impact, or industry awareness, communications should serve as a strategic driver—not just a tactical function.Colleen shares how association communicators can move beyond measuring activity and start demonstrating impact by aligning campaigns, messaging, and metrics with broader organizational priorities.Key HighlightsCommunications Is a Vehicle, Not the Destination: Why successful associations start by identifying organizational goals before choosing tactics, channels, or content.Moving Beyond Activity Metrics: Open rates, impressions, and followers matter—but leadership increasingly wants to understand how communications contributes to growth, engagement, and strategic priorities. From Reactive to Strategic: How communications teams can avoid becoming an internal service department and instead position themselves as partners in achieving organizational outcomes.Event Marketing With Purpose: Why understanding the business importance of attendance leads to stronger messaging, better audience targeting, and more meaningful measurement.Member Retention Through Value Reinforcement: How communications can help members understand the value, relevance, and impact of association membership throughout the year.Supporting Sponsorship and Non-Dues Revenue: Why sponsors are looking for outcomes—not just visibility—and how strategic storytelling can strengthen partnerships.

AI is moving fast, but customer trust is moving the other way and that should make every customer experience leader pause. We've all seen the rush to deploy chatbots, automate support, and squeeze more efficiency out of service operations. The problem is that customers don't grade you on “AI adoption.” They grade you on whether they can get the job done, feel respected, and leave the interaction confident they were heard. We dig into why so many people say they “hate AI” when what they really hate is a broken experience: circular chatbot loops, unclear paths to resolution, and zero way to reach a human. We also talk about the less obvious wins, like AI that helps customers find answers inside an app, makes shopping easier, or offers proactive guidance at the right moment. When AI is designed around the customer journey, it can earn trust the same way humans do by showing up with the right help at the right time. To make this practical, we share three questions you can use this week to evaluate any AI in customer service or generative AI initiative: Is it working for the customer? What should this moment feel like? Can they always reach a human? We also make the case for human-in-the-loop support for nuanced situations and for transparency as a non negotiable trust signal. If you want AI that scales without sacrificing the experience, start here, then subscribe, share this with your team, and leave a review so more CX leaders can find it.Resources Mentioned:Order your copy of Experience Is Everything -- http://experienceiseverythingbook.comLearn more about CXI Membership™ and apply -- http://CXIMembership.comExperience Investigators -- https://experienceinvestigators.comEnjoyed the show? Michael Mejer's definitive shift into cannabis PR was sparked by a moment of absolute clarity. He witnessed an elderly man, wracked by severe tremors, find instant relief through a cannabis tincture, a profound transformation that happened in seconds. That powerful experience became the catalyst for his entire career, prompting him to walk away from a traditional PR and book-publishing trajectory. Driven by a newfound obsession to understand the industry, Mejer plunged headfirst into the fast-paced landscape, navigating the chaotic energy of major conferences like MJBizCon. He invested countless hours networking and decoding the complex, unpredictable machinery of the cannabis trade from the ground up. Today, through Green Lane Communication, Michael specializes in earned media for cannabis brands, successfully placing clients in mainstream outlets like Forbes, High Times, and Rolling Stone. His approach goes beyond cannabis-specific media by positioning clients as expert voices on broader wellness and science topics. He co-hosts Tech Jam, an annual networking event with Sorting Robotics, bringing together innovative companies like Roll Pros and Emerald Intel. AI agents are already shopping, comparing, booking, and contacting support for the customers we've spent decades trying to understand. That means customer experience is no longer judged only by what a person feels in the moment, it's also scored by what an AI can find about your brand across policies, pricing, FAQs, reviews, and the broader web. If that idea makes you a little uneasy, good. It's the wake-up call CX leaders need right now. I break down what “agentic AI” changes in the customer journey and why it creates a world with no fine print. When an agent can surface your warranty terms, return rules, delivery performance, and reputation signals in seconds, the gaps between your brand promise and real experience become impossible to hide. We talk about the trust signals AI is likely to reward, including transparent pricing, clear and consistent policies, accurate product information, reliable delivery, and responsive customer service. Consistency stops being a nice-to-have and becomes the proof your brand can be trusted. And we don't lose the human part. Emotions still drive loyalty because people still make the final decision about who they trust. I share why a clear customer experience mission statement matters more than ever, especially if you're training internal teams and tools around a defined promise of how you want customers to feel. You'll leave with practical next steps: experiment with AI like a customer, audit your digital experience, remove hidden friction, and tighten the public signals that shape recommendations. If an AI agent evaluated your brand today, what would it say about your customer experience? If you've ever shouted “just let me talk to a person” at a chatbot, this one's for you. Jeannie Walters is joined by special cohost Brandon McGovern, Senior Director of Customer Experience at HP, to pressure-test the biggest question in AI customer service right now: how do we automate without breaking trust? We start with a headline that feels like a warning label. Norse Atlantic Airways offers dirt-cheap tickets, but customers say there's a catch: customer support is so locked behind tech that getting help can become impossible. We unpack why this isn't simply a “tech problem,” but a governance and leadership problem. When companies remove phone numbers, skip the escape hatch, and ignore high-emotion journeys like refunds and disruptions, they don't just frustrate people, they create financial harm and open the door to fraud. Then we zoom out to the enterprise reality. Cisco's line that adopting AI is “like surgery without the drugs” is painfully honest, and it frames the messy middle many CX teams are living through. We talk about why rushing to automate tasks can amplify mistakes, how to redesign workflows around outcomes, and why “faster” is the wrong North Star compared to what's now possible. Along the way, we dig into authenticity, rising customer expectations, and why AI is killing the illusion of fine print as customers use their own tools to read policies and push back.If you're leading CX, contact centers, or digital support, you'll leave with practical guardrails for pilots, measurement, and intent selection. Subscribe, share this with a teammate, and leave a review with the biggest AI question you're wrestling with right now.About Brandon McGovernSenior Director of Customer Experience at HPUnderstanding your customers isn't enough. I build the systems that turn that understanding into outcomes.I'm a Senior Director of Customer Experience at HP, leading enterprise-wide measurement, analytics, and operations that enable the company to understand and act on customer sentiment in real time. I oversee a global Voice of the Customer ecosystem capturing tens of millions of signals annually, translating them into product, service, digital, and brand strategy decisions across the business. My work has delivered double-digit NPS improvements and material revenue impact by shifting CX from a reporting function to an operational and strategic capability - powered by data, automation, and applied AI.Beyond enterprise implementation, I build with AI hands-on - personal projects in game design, product prototyping, and workflow automation using Claude, Lovable, and other tools. Building outside my domain teaches me where AI actually breaks down, which makes me a better architect of AI-powered operating models at work.I bring engineering depth coupled with business leadership (MBA, MS in Electrical Engineering, Stanford executive education), and I specialize in building scalable CX platforms, driving cultural change, and aligning executives around customer-led transformation. Momentum is the thing every CX leader wants and almost nobody hands you. When you're staring at a 12-month roadmap but drowning in daily requests, it's easy to feel like you're working nonstop while nothing actually changes. We built this conversation for that exact moment, and we keep it practical: seven days, one intentional move, and a clear path to visible customer experience impact. We walk through a simple three-step framework we use with leaders who are trying to turn CX strategy into action. First, we orient before we act by choosing where our energy belongs instead of reacting to whatever is loudest. We talk through a clear set of focus areas and how a quick assessment can highlight the biggest gap between the experience you want to deliver and what's getting done right now. Then we get real about focus: protecting time, avoiding data rabbit holes, and picking an outcome you can actually ship in a week. Finally, we make one intentional leadership decision that isn't driven by urgency or the inbox. That decision might be defining what success looks like, revisiting a customer experience mission statement, or having the buy-in conversation you've been avoiding. The goal is not perfection. The goal is momentum you can feel and results you can point to.If you're ready to try the seven-day challenge, listen now, share this with a CX peer who feels stuck, and subscribe so you don't miss what comes next. If your CX work keeps getting reduced to dashboards, survey scores, and “please fix this one issue,” it's time to change how you lead. We respond to a listener who's using Experience Is Everything with their team and wants the clearest path from customer experience ideas to real execution. The big theme is simple: structure creates credibility, and credibility creates the room you need to drive meaningful change. We start with the most powerful foundation you can build fast: a CX mission statement. It aligns mindset across the organization, helps you stop acting like a feedback narrator, and gives your team language they can confidently evangelize. From there, we dig into customer experience strategy, because too many organizations never actually write one down. We walk through how to define success in a way that supports organizational goals so your CX work becomes proactive, intentional, and business-led rather than reactive. Then we get practical about culture and discipline. Culture is hard to change, so we talk about scoring where you are today, choosing one area you can influence, and re-checking progress over time. We also cover the CX charter, the document that turns your foundation into coordinated efforts with the right people involved, a clear communication cadence, and shared measures of success. Subscribe, share with your team, and leave a rating and review so more CX leaders can find it.Enjoyed the show? Subscribe, share with your team, and leave a quick review to help others find us. Burnout doesn't come from “not being able to handle it.” It happens when CX work becomes an endless stream of urgent requests with no clear priorities. In this episode, we unpack why customer experience leaders burn out trying to solve everything at once, and how a clear CX mission and strategy create the guardrails to prioritize, push back, and lead proactively instead of reactively. We also explore what strategy looks like in practice: focusing on outcomes that matter most, aligning CX work to business goals, and building small habits that keep you grounded. If you're not sure where to start, we walk through a simple reset: picture what “wins” you want one year from now, then work backward into practical next steps. And because CX asks a lot of empathy from you, we close with an essential reminder: show yourself the same compassion you expect your teams to show customers, and build small habits that help you stay centered before taking on one more thing. If this resonates, share it with a CX leader, subscribe so you don't miss what's next, and leave a rating or review to help more leaders find the show.Resources Mentioned:Order your copy of Experience Is Everything -- http://experienceiseverythingbook.comLearn more about CXI Membership™ and apply -- http://CXIMembership.comExperience Investigators -- https://experienceinvestigators.comEnjoyed the show? Viktor Glinka: Why Context Is King for Scrum Master Success — Building Capabilities That Drive Business Goals Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes.   "Product management skills are crucial for Scrum Masters. Once you understand how retention impacts your return on investment, you will be able to coach your product owner." - Viktor Glinka   Viktor offers a nuanced perspective on Scrum Master success by distinguishing between short-term and long-term success. On the long-term side, he argues that the purpose of a Scrum Master extends beyond working with teams — it's about helping improve the system as a whole. To do that, you need to connect your contribution to the product's success by helping build specific capabilities. Viktor grounds this in practical terms: start by asking what the business goal of your company is, and check whether people around you actually know it. Never assume everyone does. That simple act of curiosity gives you the information you need to figure out how to contribute. In his experience, the key capability his teams needed to develop was multi-learning — the ability to work across components — and that directly served the business goal. Viktor makes a strong case that Scrum Masters need product management skills. Understanding how metrics like retention impact long-term success allows you to coach product owners and analyze product dynamics. His practical advice: if you're not experienced in this, go shadow your product owner, spend time with the sales department, and look through customer support tickets. You'll understand far more about the system than staying at the development organization level.   Self-reflection Question: Can you clearly explain how your work as a Scrum Master contributes to your product's success? What specific capability are you helping the system build right now? Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Data-Driven Discussions with Actionable Outcomes Viktor's approach to retrospectives is refreshingly pragmatic: it depends on the team. For teams not yet used to actionable improvements, he starts simple — review previous retro decisions, ensure new concrete ones are created, and bring data as food for thought. He particularly likes using the cumulative flow diagram and time distribution histogram to help teams reflect on consistency in delivery. One team he worked with adopted this as a natural habit over time. For mature teams, format matters less — one team ran a simple "good, bad, to improve" retro in 30 minutes on their own, without a Scrum Master, and it was one of the most engaged and effective retrospectives Viktor had ever seen. He also values the free-talk format when first meeting a new team, coming in with genuine curiosity and no biases. And when something clearly went wrong — an incident, a failure — Viktor drops whatever format he had prepared. "In those moments, it's important to trust your instinct, read the room, sense the tension, and step into the danger directly."   [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Jon Hyman (CTO & Co-Founder @ Braze) returns to the podcast to share how he balances a mature, public-company roadmap with visionary AI innovation! We deconstruct Braze's quantitative "Product Health" framework - a scoring system used to resolve competing prioritizations and mandate technical remediation. We also discuss shifting engineering leaders to think like GMs, how to realign teams by connecting abstract “vision” to specific releases, goals & outcomes. Plus, Jon's three-tier mental model for AI products, how to identify AI features that actually drive revenue, and reimaging your product for future channels, teams, and skills.   ABOUT JON HYMAN Jon Hyman is the co-founder and chief technology officer of Braze, the customer engagement platform that delivers messaging experiences across push, email, in-app, and more.
