Hello friends! From 1970 to 2004 Houston radio was defined by one station, 101 KLOL FM. The new documentary, "Runaway Radio" tells the story of the rise and fall of 101 KLOL. Mike McGuff, director, writer, producer, of "Runaway Radio" is my guest for episode 1379! The movie is available now on demand. Go to rock101movie.com to find out where to view it, and more. Mike and I have a great conversation about the history of KLOL, getting Sammy Hagar, Melissa Ethridge, Lyle Lovett, Dusty Hill and so many more in the movie, the rebellious nature of KLOL from the beginning to the end, the D.J.'s and personalities that defined the station, the George Harrison interview, Stevens & Pruitt, Dayna Steele, 70's  counterculture, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and much more. I had a great time getting to know Mike and more about KLOL. I'm sure you will too. On Thursday's show: HISD announced it will increase teachers' hourly pay as part of 2024-2025 compensation plan, which would take effect July 1 if approved by the board. However, reporter Dominic Anthony Walsh explains why the plan might not actually be the raise it seems. Also this hour: We discuss how civic engagement has changed over the years – how much harder it is to actually get people from opposite sides of the political spectrum to engage with one another, how social media and cable news bubbles have created entirely separate worlds for the most partisan, and whether there's a way to put that genie back in the bottle. Then, we discuss how researchers and scientists are contemplating the use of AI, particularly as it starts to fall in the hands of consumers. And, from the 1970s to the early 2000s, some radio stations were doing things a little bit differently – including here in Houston. The new documentary Runaway Radio tells the story of KLOL-FM, an iconic rock station – and a different time in radio.

Available now wherever you stream or rent movies is the new documentary Runaway Radio. This is a fascinating look at the radio business of the 70s and 80s, a wild west time period where big personalities and big promotional budgets were the norm. And there is no better microcosm of radio in the 70s and 80s than Houston, Texas, home to the legendary station, KLOL, an outlaw station that slowly went mainstream but not before it became an iconic part of the Houston community. Through remarkable archive footage and interviews with the people who were part of the history as it was made, director Mike McGuff has opened a time capsule of the 70s and 80s unlike any other. Mike McGuff talked about Runaway Radio with Wake Up Tri-Counties last week.

Mike McGuff is Alzheimer's Association's Ambassador for Texas' 7th Congressional District. Before the pandemic struck, he was supposed to go to Congress to speak with our representatives. He became an advocate after his mother died of early onset of Alzheimer's, a cruel affliction that killed her while Mike was still in his 20s. Since then, he has worked to raise awareness for the need for research (there is no cure yet) and the importance of support networks. The trip to Washington was delayed but the urgency of the need is still with us and we discuss how donations and volunteering are ways we can help. Got to: www.alz.org/texas
