"Johnny Goudie is the Marc Maron of Austin music. The veteran singer/guitarist – best known for fronting early Nineties pop band Mr. Rocket Baby and, later, his major-label rock act, Goudie – stepped up to the microphone with a new intention in 2011 and launched the How Did I Get Here? podcast. Now 840-some episodes in, the hourlong, twice-weekly interview show gives the host a platform to really connect with his Austin music guests, not just on what’s happening in their careers, but also in the shared experience of music appreciation – and that’s where he truly shines." - The Austin Chronicle
The How Did I Get Here? podcast is a refreshing and engaging show hosted by Johnny Goudie. In each episode, Johnny sits down with musicians and artists to have in-depth conversations about their lives, careers, and creative processes. What sets this podcast apart is that it feels like a casual conversation between friends rather than a formal interview.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is Johnny's conversational interview style. He creates a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for his guests to open up and share their stories. Johnny isn't afraid to ask the tough or unconventional questions, allowing his guests to delve into their personal journeys and reflect on how they arrived at their current positions in the music industry. This unique approach brings out authentic and insightful responses from the artists.
Another great aspect of this podcast is the variety of guests that Johnny brings on the show. From local Austin musicians to well-known artists, there is always someone interesting to listen to. The diversity in musical genres and backgrounds ensures that every listener will find something they enjoy. Whether it's hearing stories from legendary bands like The Ventures or discovering new up-and-coming artists, there is never a dull moment on this podcast.
While it's hard to find any significant flaws with The How Did I Get Here? podcast, one small criticism could be that some episodes may not appeal to every listener's musical taste. However, this can also be seen as a positive aspect since it exposes listeners to different styles of music they may not have discovered otherwise.
In conclusion, The How Did I Get Here? podcast is a must-listen for music lovers everywhere. Johnny Goudie's talent as an interviewer shines through as he brings out the best in his guests with thoughtful questions and genuine interest in their stories. Whether you're interested in the music industry or simply enjoy hearing fascinating conversations with talented individuals, this podcast offers something for everyone.

When everything fell apart in New Orleans a decade later, they ended up with so much more. Welcome to another episode of How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today, we go back to episode 1268 on April 20, 2023 for a special collaboration with Magnet Classics Podcast. Magnet Classics Podcast host Hobart Rowland and I talk to Cotton Mather songwriter and frontman Robert Harrison about their classic album Kontiki. I hope you enjoy our conversation with Robert about this amazing album. I sure did. Below are my original notes from the show. Hello and welcome to a special How Did I Get Here? and Magnet Classics Podcast collaboration episode where we talk all things Kontiki with Cotton Mather frontman, Robert Harrison! Over SXSW, Magnet Classics Podcast host, Hobart Rowland and I sat down with Cotton Mather's Robert Harrison to talk about their 25 year old classic album, Kontiki, from where the band was when he started writing, to recording it to touring with Oasis in the U.K. in support of it. Listen to Kontiki HERE. Check out Magnet Classics Podcast HERE or wherever you pod. Thanks to Hobart and Robert for this enjoyable chat and Magnet for the collaboration. I hope you enjoy it. I sure did. Below are Hobart's notes on Kontiki. "Initially released with a whisper 26 years ago on a tiny Houston-based label, Kontiki is one of the great lost albums of the '90s. Working out of his house and a friend's place in the Texas Hill Country, Cotton Mather's Robert Harrison recorded then deconstructed songs he'd once assumed would get a more conventional rock-band treatment. Tools included an ADAT, a four-track cassette recorder and a two-track DAT machine. The result is one of the catchiest “experimental” albums you'll ever hear. Tracks with odd titles like “Camp Hill Radio Operator,” “Homefront Cameo,” “Aurora Bori Alice” and “Vegetable Row” offer equally strange and cryptic lyrics set to overtly hummable melodies. Conceived in a virtual creative vacuum, Kontiki ranks among the best power-pop albums of all time. A quarter-century later, it still sounds utterly timeless—yet weirdly current." - Hobart Rowland Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. For our 2025 year in review, "How Did I Get Here?" teams up with the power trio from the "Hey, Good For You!" podcast - bass players, Rachel Loy, Alison Prestwood, and Harmoni Kelley (who have collectively played with Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Peter Frampton, Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Joe Bonamassa, Wynonna Judd, Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, and many more) to discuss our 2025. It's a sad day in music... Legendary and beloved drummer and father Bryan Keeling passed away yesterday from cancer inNashville. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Bryan has spent the last 20 years playing music, he moved to LA, recorded with Pink, Macy Gray and others, he also played with Shooter Jennings for years, and now plays with Eric Sardinas and Big Motor and tours the world. Even Africa! I had a great time reconnecting with Bryan after so many years. Playing music can be a healing experience. Join Bryan and I for coffee as we catch up over the last 20 years.
