Somehow we've already reached the point where the conversation spirals from Steven Spielberg's new alien movie into whether Lear's digestive system could accidentally start an interplanetary war.Just another totally normal morning. The gang kicks things off with a packed weekend preview, including Lear's big Pageant event, Moon's soccer watch party in Illinois, and the upcoming Night at the Rizzlies. Then things take a sharp left turn into the great extraterrestrial debate after discussion of Spielberg's latest sci-fi blockbuster sparks a surprisingly deep conversation about intelligent life beyond Earth.Do aliens exist? Are they already here? Is Earth basically the North Sentinel Island of the galaxy? Could heaven secretly be a spaceship? These are apparently the questions that happen when you give a radio show access to microphones before coffee fully kicks in.The crew dives into theories ranging from religion and simulation concepts to alien overlords, government coverups, and whether any of us would voluntarily board a mysterious spacecraft in the middle of nowhere. Some members of the show are ready to leave Earth immediately. Others have follow-up questions about bathrooms. There's also a healthy amount of celebrity and entertainment chaos. Learn breaks down the new Sublime album featuring Jakob Nowell, Fleetwood Mac's upgraded greatest-hits collection, Motley Crue's theatrical return, Sammy Hagar's upcoming tour, and Larry David's newest HBO project. Along the way, the gang somehow turns a discussion about classic rock into a deep dive on band members dating each other, divorcing each other, and then somehow continuing to make hit records together. The movie conversation keeps rolling with discussions about Spielberg's return to alien storytelling, the highest-rated films of the last 25 years, Christopher Nolan's domination of IMDb rankings, and why Whiplash remains one of the most stressful movies ever made.Plus:The Blues' Stanley Cup anniversary memoriesO.J. Sammy Hagar has made a bold claim: Eddie Van Halen didn't just change guitar playing—he saved guitar players. On a recent interview, Hagar praised Eddie as a "music god," comparing his genius to Beethoven and crediting him with revolutionizing not only guitar, but modern rock music itself. According to Sammy, without Eddie's innovations—tapping, whammy bar techniques, groundbreaking songwriting, and keyboard work—guitarists may have been left behind in a world dominated by electronic music and technology. Hagar also reflects on how working with Eddie Van Halen made him a better singer, songwriter, and musician. From classics like Love Walks In and Black and Blue to later-era masterpieces from Balance, Sammy argues that some of Eddie's most advanced and underrated work came during the Van Halen years they shared together. Did Eddie Van Halen save guitar players? Was his later work even more impressive than the early classics? Join the conversation on this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV! #EddieVanHalen #SammyHagar #VanHalen #ExclusivelyVanHalen

Bringing The Darkness To The Light with Catherine Nadal From Operation Babylift to Rock Stages: Guest, Tyson Leslie on Vixen, Collaboration, Nashville, and a Life in Music Catherine Nadal Opens Bringing the Darkness to the Light In this episode of Bringing the Darkness to the Light, host Catherine Nadal welcomes musician Tyson Leslie, a keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, vocalist, songwriter, and performer known for his work with multiple bands, including Vixen. Catherine explains that she met Tyson about a year earlier at M3 through her friend Jack Frost, and she opens the interview by noting how impressed she was after learning more about Tyson's wide-ranging music career and ongoing projects. Operation Babylift and Growing Up in Colorado Tyson shares that he came to the United States through Operation Babylift after the Vietnam War. He explains that, after the war ended, many orphaned babies were flown out of Vietnam on cargo planes and Pan Am planes, sometimes in difficult and unusual conditions. Tyson was brought to the United States, placed in the Midwest, and adopted by a Caucasian family in Greeley, Colorado. He says he is grateful for that outcome because he knows his life would likely have been very different otherwise. Discovering Music as a Child Catherine asks when Tyson first became involved with music, and Tyson says his mother remembers him playing piano at about age three, picking out simple melodies like “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” His father did not play music, but often gave him toy instruments, including small organs, drums, and guitars. Tyson later took classical piano lessons, then became inspired by bands and artists he saw on MTV, including Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Prince, and Michael Jackson. After winning a talent contest and earning $100, he bought his first guitar from a pawn shop and taught himself to play. Learning Instruments by Necessity Tyson explains that much of his musicianship came from necessity. If a band lost a bass player, he learned bass. When he worked at the piano bar Howl at the Moon in Kansas City, he had to jump between instruments and became a better drummer by playing regularly. He listened to drummers such as Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, and jazz-fusion players, while also exploring many different styles. Although he is known as a rock musician in Nashville, he says he plays country, R&B, hip hop, classical, fusion, and whatever else he is hired to perform. Corey Taylor, Vixen, and Major Career Moments Tyson identifies Corey Taylor from Slipknot as the first major artist he worked with, in a project that later connected to Corey's CMFT material. He then discusses moving to Nashville in 2015, briefly playing country music with Tracy Lawrence, and eventually joining the Vixen camp. Tyson also recalls Eddie Trunk's 40th anniversary show as one of the most surreal moments of his career because he shared the stage with artists he grew up admiring, including Alice Cooper, Sammy Hagar, Kevin Cronin, and others. He also mentions playing before an enormous crowd with Bret Michaels at the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh. Life with Vixen and the Fan Experience Catherine asks about Tyson's role in Vixen, and he explains that although the band's brand is built around being an all-female hard rock band, male keyboard players have been part of the live setup in different ways over the years. Tyson says he was originally asked to remain somewhat invisible in photos and videos, which he understood, but that his role has evolved and he is now included more openly in certain moments, such as end-of-show bows. Catherine and Tyson also talk about how bands from the 1980s still transport fans back to earlier times through songs that carry memory, identity, and nostalgia. Tyson's Original Music and “Little Green Honda” The interview turns to Tyson's solo work, beginning with “Little Green Honda.” Tyson explains that the song was inspired by a female singer in an early-2000s band whose worn-out Honda Civic could not go in reverse, had a cracked windshield, and had to be pushed out of parking spots after gigs. He wrote the song as a tongue-in-cheek, high-energy power-pop track influenced by Butch Walker and Marvelous 3. Tyson says the album was his first solo record, and he produced it, wrote it, and played most of the instruments, with friends contributing drums, guitars, and backup vocals. Collaboration, “Burning Time,” and the Mercenaries Concept Catherine then highlights “Burning Time,” which Tyson released under the concept name Mercenaries. Tyson explains that he chose that name because the idea was to bring in “badass” hired musicians to execute the job. The track features major players including Billy Sheehan on bass, Roxy Petrucci from Vixen on drums, Jimmy Bell on guitar, and Todd La Torre from Queensrÿche on vocals and co-writing. Tyson says Todd rearranged the song and elevated it beyond what Tyson had originally imagined, reinforcing Tyson's belief that collaboration often makes music stronger. Rock Cruises, Nashville, and Musical Community Catherine asks about rock cruises such as Monsters of Rock and the '80s Cruise, and Tyson describes them as uniquely fun because musicians and fans are all together on the ship, with nowhere else to go. Artists watch each other's shows, run into fans in cafeterias, sign memorabilia, and sometimes join unexpected late-night moments such as karaoke. Tyson also describes Nashville's Broadway scene as sensory overload, with multiple floors of live music, constant requests, country and rock bands, and musicians moving quickly between venues. He explains that his own schedule is driven by a busy calendar of piano shows, downtown Nashville gigs, Vixen dates, travel, and special events. “Cradle to the Grave” and Closing Thoughts The show closes with Tyson discussing “Cradle to the Grave.” Catherine says the track felt country to her, while Tyson explains that his influence was more T. Rex, with big vocals, a big sound, and a fun party energy. He says he wrote lyrics while stopped at traffic lights, then developed the song with collaborators who added drums, backing vocals, and guitar. Tyson describes the song as playful and somewhat nonsensical, with the feeling of going as hard as possible and having fun as if it were the end of the world. He directs listeners to find him by searching Tyson Leslie on social media, YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms before the episode ends with the song.

On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into some major praise for Van Halen from one of the world's biggest podcasts! During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan and investor, mathematician, and physicist Eric Weinstein discussed the impact of Van Halen and the legacy of Eddie Van Halen. Rogan called Van Halen with David Lee Roth "literally a perfect band," saying they were one of the greatest rock bands of all time and a defining part of his high school years. Rogan also argued that Eddie Van Halen never received the mainstream credit he deserved for completely changing the guitar world. The conversation touched on the band's evolution into the Sammy Hagar era, with Rogan noting that while the band became even more popular, it was a different sound from the original Van Halen that revolutionized rock music. Did Eddie Van Halen get the recognition he deserved? Was the original Van Halen the perfect rock band? Join us as we break down Rogan and Eric Weinstein's comments and discuss the lasting impact of the world's most influential guitarist! #VanHalen #EddieVanHalen #JoeRogan #ExclusivelyVanHalen #EricWeinstein
We started First Concert Memories, the monthly series from The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, we wanted to capture the passion of rock fans who were turned on (usually at a young age) by the power of a great live rock show. That passion comes from childhood and teenage fandom of bands that hit you in just the right spot in your heart, mind and time of your life. For our generation, that was Van Halen. The genius of Eddie Van Halen's guitar against the raw vocals of David Lee Roth catapulted the boys into superstardom as they were loved by hard rockers, guitar heads, MTV, adoring females, and record company execs. That's why we can do our 3rd FCM on Van Halen because they were that big and they changed their sets so much over the years (not to mention lineups) that there are lots of entry points depending on your age. Tim Durling of Tim's Vinyl Confessions is just a bit younger than Action Jackson and The Wolf so while our heroes first show was the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour, Tim first so the fellas on the Balance Tour in 1995. Van Halen were Tim's favorite band but because the band never toured Atlantic Canada where he grew up, there were few opportunities to catch them live. Once he was old enough to drive across the border with his buddies, he finally caught Eddie, Alex, Mike & Sammy in Maine in August of 1995. Tim knows Van Halen and at the time they were still his favorite band. He's even written a book on Sammy Hagar , Red on Black, so seeing his heroes was a dream come true. There were some disappointments with the opening band and the setlist was very heavy on Sammy era. In this episode, the Bo-Hosts celebrate the 38th Anniversary of Van Halen's multi-platinum sophomore album, OU812. Released on May 24, 1988, OU812 (pronounced "Oh You Ate One Too") debuted at #1 on the US Billboard 200 chart and was the Sammy Hagar-fronted band's second consecutive studio album to hit the top spot. The classic, but equally controversial album (due to it's lack of low-end Michael Anthony), spawned four Top-40 singles, including the smash hit "When It's Love". But after 38 years, the Bo-hosts revisit the album's overlooked cookers, such as "AFU", "Source of Infection" and "Black and Blue", to discuss why they should be re-appraised, their VH rankings and their sonic-siblings!So crack open a Sammy libation of choice, set the DeLorean's controls for the sun-drenched days of 1988 and join the Bo-Hosts for an episode so big it needed to be split in half! EPISODE #125 - One of the most important people in making Van Halen a successful band was engineer/producer Donn Landee. He served as an engineer on the first six VH albums with David Lee Roth and as an engineer/producer on “5150” and “OU812” during the Sammy Hagar years. Landee was also responsible for building Eddie Van Halen's home studio, 5150. The impact he had on Van Halen was immeasurable. Additionally, he worked alongside producer Ted Templeman on other famous acts like the Doobie Brothers, Little Feat, Nicolette Larson and many others. In tribute, the Daves do a deep dive interview with author Greg Renoff who had conducted several interviews with Landee for his books ("Van Halen Rising" and "Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music") and an extensive story for Tape Op magazine. A fun Van Halen News segment and colorful mailbag session completes this May episode.Download the podcast for free on Spreaker, iHeartRadio, Spotify, Google podcasts, Amazon Music, Podvine or iTunes. Kick-off those worn-out shoes, let your hair down and pour yourself some lite roast, because the Bo-Hosts welcome you to: Sammy Sunday Mornings! The "BONUS OTIS" mini-episodes are bite-sized and focus on the mellower side of the RedRocker's catalog! In this episode, the Bo-Hosts prove again that Sammy Hagar writes solid lyrics! More proof you ask? Well, how many other artists write songs with lyrics that are just as relevant- if not more so- five decades after the song's release?! It's almost like Sammy borrowed Marty's Delorean to write the eerily prophetic "Crack in the World" off 1976's Musical Chairs. This song's incredibly spot-on lyrics warn about the coming social/political/financial polarity and that specifically "in 2025" there will be a "great divide". CRAZY RIGHT!? How did Sammy nail this insights like these 50 years ago?! Hold up, it's not Sammy's only prophetic song, but it could be his "prog-rock-iest" lyrical prediction for sure!Is this Sammy in "full Floyd" mode? Well, let us know as we slowed down the outro by 10%...so put your feet up and join the Bo-Hosts for another lazy, hazy, Sammy Sunday! All songs available for purchase on iTunes! This week the people demanded it, and we complied! Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistake: ZEBRA Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is our celebration of an amazing power trio from New Orleans / Long Island that has been largely forgotten in the pantheon of rock n' roll. They also happen to be very musically proficient, with a bona fide guitar god in the band that rarely gets the praise he deserves! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content casually mentioned a few weeks ago and our socials lit up like a Christmas tree. While their first album went gold in the US, they have been largely forgotten in the hard rock world today. We think they should be remembered as titans of rock alongside the likes of RUSH and TRIUMPH! Songs this week include: Zebra - “Tell Me What You Want” from Zebra (1983) Zebra - “As I Said Before” from Zebra (1983) Zebra - “No Tellin' Lies” from No Tellin' Lies (1984) Zebra - “Drive Me Crazy” from No Tellin' Lies (1984) Zebra - “Better Not Call” from 3.V (1986) Zebra - “Wait Until The Summer's Gone” from Zebra Live (1990) Zebra - “K.K. Hour 1 opens with Marc Cox reacting to freezing May temperatures before launching into sharp skepticism over media reports claiming President Trump is softening on Iran, arguing Trump's real red line remains eliminating Iran's nuclear capabilities while distrusting mainstream coverage of the negotiations entirely. The hour also includes studio upgrade chaos and previews of upcoming interviews on psychedelic PTSD treatments and Missouri school board election fights. Marc then reflects on the death of CNN founder Ted Turner while criticizing media coverage of Trump's White House ballroom expansion and unloading on St. Louis County Executive Sam Page over proposed city-county consolidation efforts, accusing local media of ignoring the financial dangers and government overreach involved. In “Kim on a Whim,” Kim St. Onge dives deep into America's Christian foundations, defending the nation's Judeo-Christian roots while criticizing Barack Obama's “not a Christian nation” comments and celebrating Texas shutting down a Muslim-only public water park event. The hour wraps with discussion about World Cup ticket price insanity, Sammy Hagar concert costs, and concerns that younger Americans may never reach the same financial stability or quality of life their parents once enjoyed. Alfred shares how he transforms heartfelt stories into custom‑written songs that act like prayers—gifts that speak directly to the heart and often bring listeners to tears. From nostalgic record‑store wanderings and the magic of classic CD havens like Amoeba, to vivid memories of live shows with icons from U 2 to Sammy Hagar, the conversation weaves together music's power to soothe depression, strengthen faith, and celebrate life's milestones.Listeners will get an inside look at the Prayer Song process—how a simple questionnaire fuels lyricists, producers, and musicians to craft a one‑of‑a‑kind track in just seven days. Join Ray and Marc as Tunesmate takes a ride back to 1986 to celebrate the release of 5150 by Van Halen. The album was a turning point for the band after David Lee Roth left and Sammy Hagar took over lead vocals. Do you remember where you were when you first heard it? The album features tracks like Why Can't This Be Love, Dreams, Best of Both Worlds, and Love Walks In. Sammy brought a new energy, and fans still debate to this day who is the best lead singer. Eddie Van Halen continued to explore keyboards after his success on 1984 and still delivered iconic guitar riffs. Alex Van Halen and Mike Anthony provided a steady rhythm section that supported this new Van Halen sound, commonly called Van Hagar. Wherever you land, it's hard to deny that this album left a lasting mark on rock history.

Hour 1 opens with Marc Cox returning to the studio and unloading on media hypocrisy and left-wing rhetoric following the attempted attack tied to Donald Trump, arguing years of inflammatory language helped create the climate for violence. He also predicts Trump will reject any Iran proposal that avoids nuclear concessions. The hour then shifts to King Charles visiting America during the nation's 250th anniversary year, sparking debate over the monarchy, Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and a resurfaced Ilhan Omar “World War 11” gaffe. In “Kim on a Whim,” the crew tackles the Justice Department's push to revive firing squads and expand capital punishment, with Marc recounting a South Carolina murder trial and criticizing endless death row appeals and Biden-era commutations. Chris Hagenow and John Hendrickson are back in the Hendrickson Library with a construction update and a timely speed limit tangent that turns into a teachable moment. The legislature just passed a bill raising Iowa's rural speed limit from 55 to 60 — a bill Chris introduced in 2020 and couldn't get out of subcommittee, partly citing the first line of a Sammy Hagar song. The fiscal note on that bill was $2.3 million. The fiscal note on this year's version? $825,000 — for what is likely a similar number of signs, six years of inflation later. The point: fiscal notes are educated guesses, not gospel, and deserve scrutiny before they drive policy decisions. The main event is a detailed update on Iowa's property tax bill. The House picked up the Senate file, amended it with their own language, and passed it 64 to 23 — with three Democrats crossing the aisle — sending it back to the Senate. Chris and John walk through the standout moment from the House floor debate: Ways and Means Chairman Carter Nordman's defense of the 2% hard spending cap. His argument is the one that matters most — that for too long, the certainty of government budgets has taken priority over family budgets, and this bill flips that script. The opposition's counterargument — that rising assessments, not spending, are the real culprit — actually makes the case for the cap. If local governments won't cut levy rates on their own when assessments rise, that's precisely why a hard cap is necessary in the first place. One key difference between the House and Senate bills that got significant attention at the public hearing: the Senate bill would revisit a 2012 reform that moved multi-residential properties — apartment buildings — into the residential tax classification. Senate supporters have argued that rebalancing it is part of delivering broader property tax fairness. Developers and real estate interests who testified at the House public hearing raised concerns that the change could put upward pressure on rents and affect senior living and retirement communities, where margins are already tight. It's a legitimate debate, and it's now one of the more prominent points of negotiation as the Senate considers its next move on House-amended Senate File 2472.
On the 75th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom & Zeus welcome back special guest, Podcaster, Comic, Musician and Shout It Out Loudcast Hall Of Famer, Izzy Presley to review the 1986 hard rock landscape changing album "5150" from Van Halen. Van Halen was coming off their diamond selling album, 1984, when the band and legendary frontman David Lee Roth split. Van Halen was known of course for their Guitar God founder Eddie Van Halen. His brother, drummer Alex Van Halen and his legendary snare was still there as was underrated bassist Michael Anthony and his incredible backing vocals. So the band recruited the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar to replace Diamond Dave. Sammy was already a well established rock star who can sing, write songs and even play guitar. 5150 was Van Halen's seventh album and made it to #1 on Billboard album charts and eventually went 6X platinum. This was Van Halen's first number one album. This album was different than the previous DLR albums with a more polished and pop oriented sound that translated into more accessible music. This is the beginning of the so-called Van Hagar era. This was the Patreon pick and as usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. So tune in to find out if "Do you like Van Halen?" After listening to last month's NSTS episode featuring the guitarists who auditioned to replace Ace Frehley in KISS, friend of the show and co-host of the Famous Lost Words podcast Tom Jokic dropped by the NSTS studios with a list of other interesting musical substitutions, featuring artists like Dave Grohl, Stevie Nicks, Lenny Kravitz, and The Doors. According to Tom, Eddie Van Halen asked a well-known female singer to join the band before they asked Sammy Hagar, who was asked by The Grateful Dead to replace Jerry Garcia(!). Lots of interesting discussion in this episode.

But that's not all that's broken, his show has become a total disaster with the fakest / lamest prank calls in the history of morning zoos. Opie explains to Ron why people loved O&A and it sounds like Opie thinks he's Howard Stern. Scorch is back with a brand new show, a brand new format, and the same old hack radio tropes. Today we're cracking open the brand new expanded edition of 5150 — the game-changing 1986 release that launched a bold new era for Van Halen with Sammy Hagar on vocals! This is the album that delivered massive hits like “Why Can't This Be Love,” “Dreams,” and “Love Walks In” — and became the band's FIRST #1 record, redefining their sound and legacy forever. In this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we go ALL IN:
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen on Johnny Beane TV, we dive into an incredible story from Guitar Player that sheds new light on the early days of Eddie Van Halen—before the tapping, before the whammy bar, and before the world knew his name. George Lynch shares firsthand memories of witnessing Eddie in his rawest form on the Sunset Strip—back when he was playing a Les Paul through a Fender amp, delivering a blues-driven style heavily inspired by Eric Clapton. No flashy techniques. No dive bombs. Just pure, mind-blowing guitar playing. Lynch describes seeing early versions of Van Halen (and even pre-Van Halen days in Mammoth) as “mind-bending,” pushing him to practice for hours just to keep up. But what's even more fascinating? He says that version of Eddie—the stripped-down, “meat-and-potatoes” blues player—might be the most underrated and interesting era of all. The episode also uncovers a forgotten influence: Terry Kilgore of Reddi Killowatt. According to Lynch, Kilgore may have inspired some of Eddie's early ideas—and might have even been “better” at the time. It's a bold claim that adds a whole new layer to the Van Halen origin story. Plus, hear incredible behind-the-scenes stories from the Monsters of Rock Tour 1988—including how Eddie lent Lynch his own gear for half the tour, and even gave Lynch's son a private guitar lesson backstage. A true class act. If you're a fan of Van Halen, guitar history, or the evolution of Eddie Van Halen's iconic sound, this is a must-watch episode packed with rare insight, stories, and inspiration.

In 1986 we lived in a divided country. People who were once good friends now found themselves on opposite sides of one of the most charged debates in the history of mankind. You had to choose - Van Halen or Van Hagar?!?! After their diamond seller 1984 ruled the world that summer, charismatic frontman David Lee Roth was looking at other opportunities. In 1985 he released his covers EP, Crazy from the Heat, fans hoped that it was just a side project. But once the boys announced that Sammy Hagar, former solo artist and frontman of Montrose, had joined the band for their March, 1986 album 5150. Recorded in Eddie's 5150 Studio, their first without producer Ted Templeman, the album ushered in a new era for the band. Sammy brought a broader perspective to their lyrics and Eddie wrote on both his guitar and keyboards. To some, they feared their guitar god was going soft and playing with his synths too much. And big hits like Love Walks' In, Why Can't This Be Love and Dreams all features keyboards but Eddie still delivers plenty of Eddie Van Halen magic. Inextricably tied by most Van Halen fans to the Live Without A Net home video, the boys reminisced about why they didn't get into it immediately but eventually came to appreciate the album thanks to the VHS. Is this the best of all the Sammy records? Is it in the Top 5 Van Halen albums? Higher? Tell us what you think!
