How do you follow a massive film with a fantastic and well-informed guest? Do another one straight away! This week we are joined by the brilliant TV writer, journalist, podcaster, and comedian Mollie Goodfellow to talk about one of the greatest sitcoms of the 21st century, The Thick of It, and the film it spawned, In The Loop. Make sure young ears are out of shot because this is a sweary one… and that's just Rob and Guy's thoughts on Alistair Campbell! We look at Armando Iannucci's magnum opus as the man behind so many enduring TV comedy classics of the 90s. With inspiration from endorsing Yes Minister on Britain's Best Sitcom in 2004, he took on the political establishment, turning it into his big-screen directorial debut and subsequently hit HBO political comedy Veep. Not since Michael Rimmer have we tackled satire. We ask if there is any weight to the claim that you can't make this kind of comedy anymore because of the state of politics today and whether New Labour 2.0 would even allow itself to be sent up in the same way it was in its original iteration's death knell in the late 00s. We hope it's not too much of an omnishambles as Britcom Goes to the Movies presents In The Loop! This is a preview of a bonus episode. Find the whole thing on our reasonably-priced patreon! Comedy writer Mollie Goodfellow talks about her early experiences on the internet, which largely amounted to luring unsuspecting men into the woods of Runescape and beheading them for fun.. We talk about the transition between social networks and how it shaped our real-life social experiences in the suburbs, why being 'Myspace Famous' didn't translate to Facebook fame, and whether the exposure that comes with going viral for an online joke is worth being yelled at for weeks afterward. -------- PALESTINE AID LINKS As the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in Gaza, we encourage anyone who can to donate to Medical Aid for Palestinians. Sam begins this week's episode with a war on science. He disproves ‘The Five Second Rule'. Yes that's right. A towering pillar of humankind's understanding of existence itself, is pushed over like a poor quality Jenga player might topple down those funtime wooden blocks. James is back from Thailand, and he's in love with the food, the vibe, a man of the woods and with his very own Mongolian donkey. They also manage to cover people reading showy books in public and Sam gets very ratty with the Renaissance. Then Mollie Goodfellow arrives and within actual seconds, teachers are getting their comeuppance, Joe Wicks is in Eastenders, Greggggggg Wallace is working out his back muscles and real life people are being met in real life and some people feel uncomfortable about that. They also blabber on about pasta, private school guilt, the legend of King Arthur and The Sopranos. And Mollie brings up ghosts. Which James loves. This week's episode is sponsored by myths and legends of the world of wine, dropwine.co.uk
A new party formed, except they’re not a party, and they don’t have policies, and their logo makes them look like a store where you can buy a £10 cup of juice. That’s right, we’re talking The Independent Group on this week’s episode. Riley (@raaleh), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), Hussein (@HKesvani), and Nate (@inthesedeserts) spoke with comedy writer Mollie Goodfellow (@hansmollman) about the Labour splitters and their delightful approach to ideology versus facts. Joining Tom Jackson to discuss the postcards from their pasts are actor and comedian ALEX LOWE (Clare in the Community, Phoenix Nights, Barry From Watford) and journalist and comedy writer MOLLIE GOODFELLOW (Guardian, GQ, New Statesman, Have I Got News For You?, Frankie Boyle's New World Order). In this almost-festive episode, we celebrate mentors and kindness - we discover Alex Lowe's love of vintage postcards, his uncanny ability to replicate the exact height of theatrical knights, and we learn about an awards ceremony put together in a week. Along the way we benefit from expert handwriting advice from Barry Saint-Michael, learn the perils of taking Brian Blessed a cup of tea, and finally establish how many kisses it's appropriate to put on the end of an email. This week's headlines have been dominated by claims of sexual harassment in Westminster and an alleged culture of inappropriate behaviour. Party battle lines have been abandoned as the Prime Minister looks for a consensus on how to handle a scandal which has claimed a major scalp in Sir Michael Fallon who's resigned as Defence Secretary. To discuss this week's hot topic, Adam Boulton is joined by freelance political journalist Marie Le Conte, Sky News editorial assistant Mollie Goodfellow and Head of Data Harry Carr. #harassment #fallonresigns #skynews
