Listen to today's podcast... It is out there. We all know that it's out there. Yet, many of us still ignore it, pretend that we don't hear it or worse yet, we laugh and join in on it. Sometimes out of embarrassment. Sometimes out of fear. Recent results show that more than a quarter of working Canadians have experienced sexual harassment or been affected by it. This can result in a variety of stress-related illnesses, relationship difficulties as well as upset productivity and engagement. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency! Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Stopping Sexual Harassment In The Workplace: Know that when faced with unwanted and unsolicited sexual harassment, victims feel confused, frustrated and angry. They may not know how to react to the situation and may become very anxious or depressed. Some employees will suffer the humiliation and harassment silently and when they can no longer take it, they will quietly quit. Not addressing sexual harassment in the workplace is bad business and can create a toxic environment. Education around sexual harassment and developing strong policies and procedures to deter it are the most effective means of minimizing its occurrence and impact. Companies can protect their employees, and create a positive workplace culture, by implementing a comprehensive policy and providing training to employees and leaders on that policy. 5-5-2026: Wake Up Missouri with Randy Tobler, Stephanie Bell, John Marsh, and Producer Drake
In this heart-wrenching episode, we hear from Carolyn, a 49-year-old former Jehovah's Witness who survived a lifetime of systemic trauma, from foster care and childhood molestation to a high-control religious environment that "eats its members alive". Carolyn shares the chilling reality of being "shunned while active," a state where she remained an exemplary member but was treated like a "leper" by her own community after reporting elder misconduct and sexual harassment. Her story exposes the dark underbelly of a congregation where elders protect abusers and engage in "fake gross" behavior, including stalking and rehoming a member's pet under false pretenses. The narrative reaches a critical turning point when the organization's cruelty extends to Carolyn's autistic son, who was bullied by elders and physically assaulted by a member over a bag of candy. Carolyn details her "miraculous" health recovery upon leaving the constant stress of the organization and her eventual choice to choose self-identity and "organic" living over a toxic, performance-based membership. This is a powerful testament to the strength required to stand up to a "hate machine" and the beauty of finding a life defined by genuine love rather than control. Key Takeaways The "Darvo" Defense: Carolyn explains how reporting elder misconduct, such as an elder rolling in the sand drunk with another man's wife, resulted in the elders forming a judicial committee against her for "slander" rather than addressing the behavior. Targeting the Vulnerable: The sources highlight the heartbreaking systemic bullying of Carolyn's autistic son, whom elders mocked as "Eeyore the donkey" and attempted to bribe with money to "smile" for them. The Myth of "Wait on Jehovah": When Carolyn sought justice through a 25-page letter to the Branch, she was ignored for months and eventually told to simply "pray more, attend more meetings, and give more" instead of receiving an investigation. Physical Toll of Indoctrination: A major revelation in the episode is that Carolyn's chronic liver and health issues, which she suffered from for years, "miraculously improved" almost immediately after she stopped attending meetings and removed herself from the stress. Conditional Forgiveness: Carolyn exposes the hypocrisy of the "Matthew 18" rule, noting that while she was told to forgive her abusers, the organization used the same scripture to form a "lynch mob" against her when she tried to apply it to their behavior. Direct Quotes "My health miraculously improved after leaving". "If I can't be myself, if I can't be organic, I don't want it. I'm putting it down". "What you're doing is hurting me. Can you please stop doing that to me?". Resources Mentioned ExJwHelp.com: Cult recovery coaching and resources. California Penal Code: Specifically regarding harassment and stalking. We look into the legal nuances of sexual harassment in the workplace, all sparked by a real-life lawsuit against an executive at JPMorgan.Key Topics Covered1. Unpacking the Case:A sexual harassment lawsuit has been filed against a female executive at JP Morgan—turning conventional scripts and gender stereotypes upside down. Drawing parallels with pop culture references such as Michael Crichton's "Disclosure," Steve and Troy discuss the rarity and significance of such cases, referencing the film's theme of reversing typical gender roles in harassment allegations (00:35).2. Shocking Allegations & Texts:Steve and Troy reveal some of the explicit and racially charged alleged messages central to the lawsuit—including threats linked to professional advancement (e.g., "If you don't fuck me soon I'm going to ruin you" and "If you want to be promoted to executive director, you would need to begin pleasing me") (02:35), (06:00). The speakers analyze how these could constitute harassment and complicate the workplace dynamic, especially considering the intersection of sexual and racial elements.3. The Law Explained – Title VII Protections:Steve offers a crash course in federal employment law, specifically Title VII, which underpins most sexual harassment litigation in the United States. There are two primary legal pathways:Quid Pro Quo: When someone in authority demands sexual favors in exchange for workplace benefits (or to avoid negative consequences) (04:02).Hostile Work Environment: When unwelcome sexual conduct is so severe or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or offensive workplace, impeding job performance (06:26).Both avenues seem implicated by the alleged actions in this case.4. The Human Element:What compels victims to stay or remain silent? Is it fear of retaliation, career ruin, or the belief they won't be believed? Steve and Troy dissect the very real dilemmas facing those targeted by workplace misconduct (07:24).5. What Happens Next? With the legal action freshly filed, the future is uncertain. While neither speaker practices employment law full-time, they outline possible outcomes and encourage professional legal counsel for anyone facing similar circumstances (08:03).Real Legal Analysis: Get an accessible, jargon-free breakdown of how sexual harassment law works.Gender Stereotypes & The Law: A rare look at how the legal system handles cases that don't fit the typical narrative.Pop Culture Meets Reality: Clever references to movies and historical scandals highlight broader trends and public perceptions.Empathy for All Victims: Beyond just the law, the episode respects the human cost and emotional fallout of workplace harassment.Introduction & Case Background: 00:00Discussion of Movie “Disclosure”: 00:42The Explicit Messages: 02:18Title VII Law Crash Course: 03:26Quid Pro Quo vs. Hostile Work Environment: 04:02, 06:26Emotional and Professional Barriers for Victims: 07:24If you or someone you know is experiencing harassment in the workplace, seek legal assistance. “If something feels wrong, trust your gut.” – Brittany StevensIn this week's episode, Carol Schultz sits down with employment attorney Brittany Stevens (Partner at Phillips & Associates) to unpack the realities of sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, and power dynamics—and what leaders can do to create workplaces where people feel safe speaking up.Brittany explains how harassment is defined under the law (and why it often differs from what people assume), why so many cases come down to evidence and “totality of circumstances,” and how fear of retaliation keeps employees silent—especially when the harasser holds power. They discuss what strong workplace policies and training should actually include, why some organizations make it hard to report, and how employees can protect themselves when a company is focused on protecting itself. The episode closes with practical guidance for both leaders and employees on building safer systems, documenting issues, and knowing when to seek confidential legal advice.TakeawaysSexual harassment isn't always “obvious”—many cases are subtle and pattern-based.Legal definitions of harassment/discrimination vary across federal, state, and city laws.Power imbalances (boss vs. employee) make reporting feel risky and unsafe.Fear of retaliation is one of the biggest reasons people stay silent.Documentation and internal complaints can significantly strengthen a case. Many companies fail by not having clear reporting policies or trusted processes.Leaders must train managers not only on behavior—but on how to respond to complaints.Discrimination can happen anywhere—industry, company size, and role don't matter. Some terminations get “hidden” behind restructuring or reductions in force.Consulting a law firm can be a confidential way to understand your options.Chapters00:00 Intro: The taboo topic—sexual harassment & workplace safety00:49 What Brittany's firm does (employee-side discrimination law)02:19 Why the firm was founded & what motivates this work02:50 Defining harassment vs. what people think harassment is04:28 Harassment isn't always sexual: hostile work environments & protected classes05:15 Evidence, documentation, and why cases are fact-dependent06:16 Power dynamics: why “just say no” isn't realistic07:43 What victims can do when they fear repercussions08:25 Why policies and reporting systems often fail (or don't exist)10:40 Vetting employers: red flags, lawsuits, and research before accepting jobs11:13 DEI changes and what may shift over time12:01 Discrimination happens everywhere (yes—even “good” companies)13:00 What leaders should do: training, reporting, investigations, real support15:54 Women vs. men: patterns Brittany sees in harassment and discrimination cases16:46 Disability/medical termination & “restructuring” as a cover18:35 How Phillips & Associates evolved and expanded over time20:05 Growth bottlenecks: why jurisdiction/laws matter21:21 Why expand into less employee-friendly states like Florida22:58 Client trust: the importance of fast support and connection23:54 Internal training: listening, empathy, and handling emotional calls26:10 Choosing a path: quiet resolution vs. litigation27:03 How to find the firm & their contingency model29:24 Final thoughts: protecting yourself when the company protects itselfConnect With Host Carol SchultzFind more information about our host Carol Schultz and her company at Vertical Elevation, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram.Want to be our next guest expert? Comment on the Show by Sending Mark a Text Message. What happens when a workplace meant to honor the dead becomes a breeding ground for sexual harassment and toxic culture? Join Mark Carey in this eye-opening episode of the Employee Survival Guide® as he unpacks the shocking case of Sheehan v. Everstory Partners, a federal lawsuit that exposes the horrific realities faced by employees in a funeral home setting. This episode is not just a recounting of legal proceedings; it's a clarion call for every employee to understand their rights in the face of discrimination and harassment. Carey and his co-host dive deep into the allegations made by five brave female plaintiffs who faced severe sexual harassment and were coerced into violating state laws regarding the handling of human remains. The contrast between the expected solemnity of a funeral home and the chaotic, degrading behavior reported by employees could not be more stark. As they dissect the implications of this case, listeners will gain a clearer picture of how sexual harassment can manifest in even the most unexpected places, and why it's crucial to advocate for a healthy workplace culture. But this episode goes beyond just storytelling; it highlights the legal significance of the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act of 2021 (EFAA). This landmark legislation empowers employees to bypass mandatory arbitration agreements in cases of sexual harassment, opening doors for justice that many thought were permanently closed. The hosts break down procedural maneuvers, the gravity of the allegations, and what the court's rulings could mean for the future of employment law and corporate accountability. Are you aware of the fine print in your employment contract? This episode serves as a wake-up call, urging employees to educate themselves about their rights and the potential pitfalls of workplace policies. From severance negotiations to understanding workplace discrimination, Carey provides insider tips that can help you navigate employment law issues effectively. Whether you're dealing with retaliation, hostile work environments, or simply trying to survive in a toxic workplace, this episode is packed with valuable insights and resources for every employee. Don't miss this opportunity to empower yourself with knowledge about workplace rights, legal protections, and the importance of advocating for a fair work environment. Send us Fan MailKeith and Rebecca are taking over the podcast this week and are answering your questions — from how to find a healthy church community to whether complementarianism is a dealbreaker. They're refreshingly honest and a little funny about it. Then Joanna joins to dig into a brand-new peer-reviewed paper on how internalized modesty messaging affects girls' self-esteem and their risk of being sexually harassed in church as minors. What they found is both unsurprising and deeply sobering: environments that emphasize modesty messaging don't just harm girls, they actually groom boys into predatory behavior. It's research that needs to get out of their little corner of the internet and into the broader conversation, and your support made it possible.TO SUPPORT US: Join our Patreon for as little as $5 a month to support our work (and get access to the book club!)And check out our Merch, or any of our courses!Give to the Good Fruit Faith Initiative of the Bosko FoundationJoin our email list!LINKS MENTIONED: Love & Respect DocuseriesBook suggestions from Rebecca: Mistborn Series by Brandon SandersonProject Hail Mary - Andy WeirShattered Sea Trilogy - Joe AbercrombieFarseer Trilogy - Robin Hobb(Join The Patreon for our great book club for more!)Support the showJoin Sheila at Bare Marriage.com!Check out her books:The Great Sex Rescue She Deserves BetterThe Marriage You Want and the Study Guide The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex and The Good Guy's Guide to Great SexAnd she has an Orgasm Course and a Libido course too!Check out all her courses, FREE resources, social media, books, and so much more at Sheila's LinkTree.

Comment on the Show by Sending Mark a Text Message.Have you ever wondered how systemic workplace vulnerabilities can lead to severe cases of sexual harassment and retaliation? In this gripping episode of the Employee Survival Guide®, Mark Carey and his guests dive deep into the alarming case of Makita Bryant and her employer, CNM Defense Group LLC. What begins as a discussion about unpaid wages quickly spirals into a harrowing exploration of exploitation, where Bryant, misclassified as an independent contractor, found herself working up to 100 hours a week without the overtime pay she rightfully deserved. This episode sheds light on the dark underbelly of corporate culture, where power dynamics can lead to a hostile work environment and blatant discrimination. As the narrative unfolds, the hosts recount specific incidents of harassment perpetrated by corporate executive Reginald Daniels, revealing the shocking realities of workplace bullying and the lengths to which some will go to maintain control. The conversation takes a critical look at legal proceedings, including jury verdicts and the pivotal role of evidence—like the recording device that captured the audio of the assault—illustrating how crucial documentation can be in dismantling the structures that protect abusers. Listeners will gain valuable insights into the importance of employee rights, the complexities of employment law, and the necessity for advocacy in cases of sexual harassment and retaliation. This episode is not just a recounting of a single case; it's a call to action for all employees to understand their rights and the legal frameworks available to them. In this episode, we discuss two elements of a recently released white paper titled “Women in the Workplace in 2025: Utahns' Awareness, Understanding, and Attitudes.” The two we'll be talking about today will be the gender pay gap and sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination. Based on an 83-item survey conducted in October and November of 2025, this study collected data from more than 5,200 Utahns across both representative and convenience samples. This marks the third consecutive year of data collection, allowing us to examine how perceptions and experiences have shifted since the 2023 and 2024 surveys. In this episode, we'll walk through key findings from the two sections mentioned to better understand the challenges, trends, and opportunities shaping the lives of Utah women and girls today.Dr. Susan Madsen, an Extension Professor of Leadership at Utah State University and the Founding Director of the UWLP and A Bolder Way Forward, is joined by two Bolder Way Forward leaders.
