We likey, it's our next guest - Paddy McGuinness! The Bolton born comedian, actor, and presenter joined us for lunch to celebrate the release of his upcoming TV series. Over a roast chicken lunch, Paddy told us that Northerners always love their food to be swimming in sauce, how he was getting tips from Sir Chris Hoy for his charity bike ride last year, his first visit to The Ivy and stealing the napkin, how he created the characters with Peter Kay for their series Phoenix Nights, and he is the second guest in two weeks to go for a prawn cocktail as their last supper starter! We also talked all about Paddy's new show Tempting Fortune which really is excellent TV. It's available to watch now on Channel 4 every Sunday, and we're hooked! Hosted on Acast. Matt and Luke hop aboard their TV Time Machine to view the TV landscape of February 2000. EastEnders turns 15 with a double episode which sees the residents of Albert Square locked in the Vic when an unexploded WW2 bomb discovered nearby. The BBC try their at a traditonal American sitcom, with audience laughter and a team of writers producing the Ardal O'Hanlan superhero comedy My Hero. In better comedy, a fresh-faced, but very astute and already polished northern comedian, Peter Kay gets his first full series in Channel 4's That Peter Kay Thing. The series, in which Kay plays a variety of different characters, is done in the docusoap style popular at the time, and the lads watch two episodes of the series. The first of which would become Kay's hit sitcom, Phoenix Nights. Lastly, there's gritty drama Nature Boy, which aired on the BBC and starred Lee Ingelby as a teen who was living in an abusive foster environment who finds he has an affinity with wildlife. And, as always, Matt tests Luke's knowledge of the UK music scene of the time.
Part 2 of our breakdown of Phoenix Nights as we continue to struggle with the urge to quote every single line. We do love it so but we take time to look at the further careers of writers Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice as well as asking the question: Peter Kay - git?
Tim talks to comedian, actor and podcaster Justin Moorhouse about how he went from homeless Peter Kay disciple to tiger-face-painted star of Phoenix Nights and award winning stand-up comedian. Tim and Justin discuss the power of saying "No", the creative fuel that comes from Imposter Syndrome and what a mate's mum vowed never to do for him again. Email fistoffirsts@gmail.com with your answer to our 'listener's first' question, or just let us know a story of what you've done for the first time this week. Part 1 of our take on Phoenix Nights, a personal favourite for both of us so prepare yourself for some nostalgia and laughter but also we try and take an in-depth and completely speculative look at the psychology of Peter Kay.
Coming in your ears! Join Dave and Liam as they discuss Phoenix Nights. Boxset 7 - Episode 6 https://linktr.ee/watchitifyoucan
Biography Steve is an actor, writer, comedian, juggler, a "Gillard award" winning presenter on BBC Radio Lancashire and now a finalist on ITV's Britain's Got Talent 2020. Steve most recently completed his 17th consecutive pantomime at The Grand Theatre, Blackpool (and his 22nd Pantomime in total) and was also made an honourary member of The Friends Of The Grand in 2016 for his services to the theatre. Last year he starred, to critical acclaim, in the World premier tour of "Naturally Insane: The Life of Dan Leno" and is taking the show to the West End (Criterion Theatre). In 2015 he performed 16 nights at The Manchester Arena as part of the "Phoenix Nights Live" show, helping raise well over £ 5 million in the process. He also appeared at the London Palladium twice within a month later that year when he performed as part of the TV show "Sunday Night At The Palladium" and as warm-up for "One Night With Neil Diamond". He spent many years as "Special Guest" on Dave Spikey's Tours and has supported several other top comedic names including Peter Kay, Mick Miller, Roy Walker and The Lancashire Hotpots! He was also the first comic, ever, to act as "Warm-up" for The Royal Variety Show featuring Take That, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Meatloaf. He is a regular Television "warm-up" for programs such as "The Rob Brydon Show", "A Question Of Sport", "Mastermind" and even survived over 150 episodes of "The Price is Right" with Joe Pasquale a few years ago. Steve's first love, however, is Stand-Up and it is a job that has taken him all over the world: Cruises in the Med, Norwegian Fjords and the Caribbean, hotels and comedy clubs in Hong Kong, Dubai, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey and Japan. He is a regular headline act at The Comedy Store and other "alternative" venues and has several television appearances to his credit. "Phoenix Nights", "Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere", "Peter Kay's Britain's Got The Pop Factor...", "Stand-up Britain", "Give Your Mate A Break", "The Afternoon Show", "Talk Of The North", a "Real Radio" advert, straight acting roles in "The Things You Do For Love" and "Magnolia", and despite being one of the North West's healthiest males, a medical insurance commercial for "Medicash". He was also featured on the Granada Programme "Behind The Scenes" and "That's Entertainment" (with Cannon and Ball) and was voted "Entertainer of the Year" at the inaugural Red Rose Awards. For over 12 years Steve could be found in the guise of "Mad Edgar" the court jester at Camelot theme park where he presented over 2000 "Crazy Juggling Shows". For years, the father-of-three has been encouraged by family and friends to audition for Britain's Got Talent, but didn't expect to get far. However in August 2020, Steve became the first act sent through to the final, impressing judges with his comedy juggling routines. For 51-year-old Steve, this is the latest journey in a rich history in the world of entertainment. Steve previously charmed the judges in the audition round, with his impressive juggling skills, using his mouth to juggle ping-pong balls before juggling three guitars. His semi final performance was a huge change for Steve, who is used to feeding off an audiences live reaction - the show had to be pre-recorded this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and social distancing, and saw Steve perform to a huge Zoom wall of viewers, as well as the shows judges. The judges unanimously chose to send him through. As Ant and Dec confirmed the news, Steve said it was "crazy and unbelievable" that he had made it through, although he left the entire panel in stitches. The grand final took place in October 2020 and Steve was placed third overall. Which was a wonderful conclusion to an amazing run on the show. And Steve is looking forward to seeing you on tour next year. So watch this space.
Only in Blighty would a one-word slip-up manage to dominate the news cycle... Yes, sausages. Marina and Jemma discuss the ongoing fallout and the concern that, of all things that went on at Labour conference, this appears to be one of the few stories that is landing. Then it's onto a party conference of a very different kind, less political conference, more Phoenix Nights rehash - because the Reform Party Conference was all going off as well, in much the same way milk does. Then ladies hear from some breathtaking vox pops from those in attendance and mull over Lee Anderson's BBC license fee stunt. Then it's on to some great underrated tweets from a Trump who STILL can't get over that debate, a James OB clip of him putting caller Roger firmly in his place and some discussion over the Starmer's son's GSCE study brouhaha. Then, as journalists up and down the country suddenly appear to have learnt how to do journalism all at the same time and coincidentally at the same time as a Labour government, it's only right that the pod ends with a pudding from The Exploding Heads that is beautifully on point. Actor and writer Sally Lindsay has always loved the spotlight. She made her TV debut aged 7 when her school choir performed their No.1 single There's No One Quite Like Grandma on Top of the Pops. But it wasn't until university that she realised she could make a career out of performing. Sally's gone on to star in hit TV shows such as Phoenix Nights, Coronation Street, Mount Pleasant and her latest project, The Madame Blanc Mysteries, which she also writes and produces. She tells James how she landed her first TV role in The Royale Family, the struggles that working-class actors face and what she's doing to tackle inequality in the industry.

He's a man of many talents but who knew Paddy McGuinness was also a culinary genius? Ahead of his return to Ireland with his first stand up show in 8 years, Paddy joined Dave from a well known restaurant chain to chat splitting the G, Phoenix Nights and a very interesting night in Dublin.
Joe and David chat to the comic and actor Ted Robbins best known for his roles in Benidorm, Little Britain, The League of Gentleman and Phoenix Nights. Ted tells them about being related to Paul McCartney and what it was like growing up with him and seeing him at family gatherings. He tells them he once watched Paul record at Abbey Road and John Lennon gave him a chocolate rabbit. In between telling them a load of brilliant jokes, Ted tells David & Joe about when he collapsed on stage in front of tens of thousands of people at the Phoenix Nights live show and about the friend that helped save his life. Justin Moorhouse is a stand-up comedian and radio DJ from Manchester. He's appeared in Looking for Eric and in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights as Young Kenny - who's an avid Man City supporter - but in this episode he's a Man United-loving Football God. Before working in TV and radio, Justin was a salesman for many years until he contacted a comedy club and performed a stand-up routine, aged 29. In 2002 he competed in a local comedy competition, winning the final held at the Comedy Store Manchester. Soon afterwards, he performed in a comedy tour, then got the role in Phoenix Nights. Join our hosts - broadcaster Kate Mason and journalist Tim Spiers - as we ponder the all-important questions such as...“Which player would you send to hell?”, “What flavour pie would be considered the food of the Gods?” and “Which game would you watch forever?” Given the power, how would you change football? David and Joe are delighted to chat to old comedy pal Alex Lowe. They insist he does some of his characters including Barry from Watford. David and Joe then give it a go themselves, trying to copy Barry's mad voice with not much success as they are laughing too much. They ask Alex where he gets his ideas from for his fantastic characters and then discuss his time on the brilliant Phoenix Nights with Peter Kaye and want to know what it was like doing a live show version in an enormous arena. Alex is great fun and divulges a couple of show business secrets which Joe and David obviously lap up. Alex Lowe is an English actor, comedian and voice artist. He is the creator and performer of the character Barry from Watford on Steve Wright's BBC Radio 2 show and Iain Lee's shows, as well as also being the creator and performer behind the character Clinton Baptiste, originally seen in Phoenix Nights as whom he has since toured.
