The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss which actors should reprise their roles in the new Harry Potter TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· Listen to episode 287, “Tom Felton is returning to Broadway. Who should return to the TV show?” Here!· 4:10 Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy. He was the perfect blend of haughty, rude, and fearful. He portrayed a fantastic arc, and really showed us what it means to be afraid. Without a doubt, he would be a great addition. · 10:21 Alan Rickman as Snape. He shouldn't return. His performance was too perfect. There are no changes I can think to make to it, and so I don't think Alan Rickman should change that. Getting another actor puts a stopper in the bottle of his performance and really immortalizes it.· 18:25 Matthew Lewis as Neville Longbottom. This is an interesting case, because there's no chance for him to return as Neville, but there are other possibilities. Perhaps, he can be a herbology professor who watches over himself in a way, and sees just how much he grows.· 24:41 Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. I don't think she should return, because she absolutely crushed it. We should get some new blood in there to preserve the performance.· 27:00 Jude Law as Dumbledore. I know, he doesn't really count, but the Fantastic Beasts Dumbledore is pretty close to the same time as some of the flashbacks we got in the films. It would be super cool if Jude Law played the younger version of him. It would put in a natural separation that Dumbledore himself wants between who he was, and who he wants to be.Having anything you want to hear or say? It's another oddly formatted week, but this time it's Lauren fighting the bed bugs early. While we have her, we talk The Roses, and Eden, then the boys talk The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Alien Earth Episode 4, Ozark, and Battlestar Galactica. Andrew and Lauren were able to catch The Roses this week, in time for the show. As big fans of the original film, The War of the Roses, everyone was expectedly excited for this one. Unfortunately, despite a solid cast, it just didn't quite deliver on the magic of the original. It does have its moments, and it isn't all bad, but it does leave a lot to be desired, and it's probably best to just watch the original Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner classic. Before she slips off into the land of dreams, Lauren talks about the Ron Howard film, Eden. It has an incredible cast including Jude Law, Daniel Bruhl, Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, and Sydney Sweeney. This is a true story of a group leaving Eastern Europe in the 30s, looking to start a new world. Unfortunately, it's not the Eden the title suggests, as there is a lot of backstabbing and infighting, a la Lord of the Flies. Overall, it's a really solid film and worth watching, though the box office numbers suggest otherwise. Once the adult supervision is gone, Andrew takes the lead and talks about the new Netflix documentary, The Truth About Jurnee Smollett? It's that ? that actually really sells this one. While this doc jumps deep into the situation that made Jurnee Smollett infamous, it does such a good job of staying neutral that it's unlikely to change your opinion on the matter if you already have one. It is excellent and does present a good amount of info, making it a satisfying watch for Andrew, but it isn't likely to change your mind if it's already made up. As will be the case for the next month or so, the topic eventually turns to Alien Earth. The show is cruising along and continues to be excellent. We're diving deeper and deeper into what makes the hybrids tick and even getting to meet some new terrifying creatures, including an almost adorable baby xenomorph that conjures maybe the wrong images, a la Spaceballs! After that, it's full-on tangent time. Kevin talks about his Ozark journey and Andrew talks about his 2001 Battlestar Galactica rewatch with his fiancée. If you like when these two ramble on, then this section of the show is what you've been waiting for! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! The 82nd Venice Film Festival got underway with a constellation of stars on its red carpet, as Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield attended the premiere of "After the Hunt", directed by Luca Guadagnino. Film critic Emma Jones tells us why she was impressed by Yorgos Lanthimos's "Bugonia", starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemmons. We also discuss the French-made political intrigue "The Wizard of the Kremlin", with Jude Law playing Vladimir Putin himself. And politics were ever-present at this year's Mostra, with Venice4Palestine protests and Kaouther Ben Hania's powerful docu-drama "The Voice of Hind Rajab", which is set in Gaza.
„Von Überraschungsarmut kann keine Rede sein“, sagt Filmkritiker Rüdiger Suchsland in SWR Kultur über die Filmauswahl bei den 82. Filmfestspielen von Venedig. Kathryn Bigelows nuklearer Thriller „A Room Full of Dynamite“ bekam Standing Ovations. Auch „The Wizard of the Kremlin“ über Putins Aufstieg mit Jude Law in einer Nebenrolle sei ein Höhepunkt.

Director, Richard Shepard and Editor, Adam Lichtenstein FILM GEEK isn't just another notch on the IMDB belts of director, Richard Shepard and his friend and editor, Adam Lichtenstein. This is the story of Richard's cinematic "life" and the mysterious father who was his guide into that world. Deftly incoroporating clips from over 200 movies of the 70's and early 80's, FILM GEEK chronicles Richard's introduction and absorption into films both classic and forgotten, between the ages of 6 and 18. From there, Richard would make the transition from amateur 8MM auteur, to being an "all-in" film student at NYU, where he would begin his over thirty-year friendship and collaboration with Adam. And it is Adam whom Richard credits as drawing out the more personal aspects of his journey in FILM GEEK, most notably the story of his complicated but caring father. RICHARD SHEPARD Richard Shepard is an Emmy and DGA-winning director/writer whose feature films include the Golden Globe nominated The Matador starring Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear, Dom Hemingway starring Jude Law and Richard E. Grant, and The Perfection starring Allison Williams and Logan Browning which was named one of the best horror films of the year by Rolling Stone, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and New York Magazine. In his career, Shepard has directed ten television pilots to pick-up including Criminal Minds, now entering its 17th season; Ugly Betty for which Shepard won the Director's Guild award and Emmy award; the Golden Globe and Emmy nominated Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist; and Acapulco for Apple, now in its third season. Through its six seasons, Shepard directed twelve episodes of the Golden Globe winning HBO series Girls, including the controversial “American Bitch” episode for which Matthew Rhys received an Emmy nomination, as well as several Emmy nominated episodes of The Handmaid's Tale. He recently directed the final two episodes of the multiple Emmy nominated Welcome to Chippendales a Hulu limited series. Shepard's short film Tokyo Project starring Elisabeth Moss and Ebon Moss-Bachrach premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was bought by HBO, and his HBO documentary I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale was nominated for an Emmy award. ADAM LICHTENSTEIN Born with a natural love for time code, Adam showed an early preference for non-drop frame, then rose through the editorial ranks pretending to enjoy sports, overusing terms like "shots on goal", "swish", "in your face" and "that's what I'm talking about" without the slightest idea what he was talking about.
Beim Filmfest in Venedig feierte „The Wizard of the Kremlin“ Premiere – mit Jude Law als Putin. Doch die große Spannung weicht Ernüchterung: zu didaktisch, zu glatt, zu wenige neue Perspektiven – und auch in Russland fällt das Urteil kritisch aus. COME ASHORE FOR THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS!Cupcake all but ordered WillDaBeast to see the new Ron Howard film solely because advanced word had Jude Law doing a “one for the history books” full frontal nude scene. And so it is: this week the Boyz review Ron Howard's historically based, “Survivor”-esque 1930's period drama “Eden” starring Law, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruehl (BARON ZEMO!), current controversial it-girl Sydney Sweeney, and Ana De Armas. Aside from the obvious visual DELIGHTS (warning: lots of breasts, penis, butt, and pregnancy talk/jokes), is this a return to prestige engrossing filmmaking from Howard or is “Eden” setting itself up to run afoul of potential multiple Razzie nominations (yes, at least one host thinks this is absolute dreck)? Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Phil and Emily continue their miniseries on Oscar winning Best Director follow ups from the 2000s with Road to Perdition, Sam Mendes' ambitious second feature after American Beauty. Joining them is film journalist and podcaster Blake Howard (One Heat Minute Productions), who helps unpack the film's technical brilliance, subdued emotional core, and unique place in early 2000s cinema.Together, they dive into Mendes' leap from stage to screen, the film's striking cinematography from Conrad Hall, and how Tom Hanks' against type performance reshaped audience expectations. The conversation explores Paul Newman's final live action role, Jude Law's scene stealing menace, and Daniel Craig's early career turn as one of cinema's most dangerous nepo babies. They also debate Thomas Newman's Oscar nominated score, the film's release strategy, and how it stands among Mendes' eclectic career from Jarhead to Skyfall and beyond. With insights ranging from Jude Law's underrated presence to the legacy of Paul Newman and Tom Hanks' evolving star persona, this episode is both a reconsideration of a Depression era gangster story and a reflection on the pressures of following up an Oscar winning debut. We are kicking off a brand new miniseries on Oscar-winning Best Director follow-up films from the 2000s, starting with Steven Spielberg's bold and deeply divisive “A.I. Artificial Intelligence.” TV critic and Vulture writer Roxana Hadadi joins Phil and Emily for a wide-ranging conversation that digs into the movie's legacy, Kubrick's influence, and how the film hit differently post-Oscars and post-9/11.They dive into the unique collaboration and friendship between Kubrick and Spielberg, how “A.I.” bridges fairy tale and sci-fi, and what it means for love, grief, and humanity to be filtered through the eyes of a robot boy. The group explores how the film's themes of artificial intelligence, the uncanny valley, and the pursuit of parental love feel even more relevant today in a world grappling with AI and rapid technological change.Other topics include Haley Joel Osment's incredible performance, Jude Law's scene-stealing Gigolo Joe, the eerie brilliance of Teddy, and why this film has remained both underappreciated and deeply beloved by fans. They also talk about the Oscars' resistance to science fiction, the film's release in a world still haunted by 9/11, and the surprising emotional impact the film has had on different audiences, including its resonance with the trans community. It is a deep dive into one of Spielberg's most complex and haunting films, a movie that still raises questions about love, loss, technology, and what it means to be human.Follow Roxana Hadadi on Instagram: @roxana.z.hadadiWant even more?
