Are you worried your teen doubts themselves no matter how hard they work? Do they brush off compliments or beat themselves up when things don't go perfectly? In this powerful episode, Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin, psychologist and author of Your Child's Greatness, joins Colleen to explore how imposter syndrome shows up in teens—and how parents can help prevent it. Lisa shares how imposter syndrome stems from not internalizing success, overvaluing others, and defaulting to perfectionism. Drawing from personal stories—including her daughter's fencing journey—Lisa highlights the importance of embracing failure, savoring small wins, and teaching your child to develop a growth mindset. You'll hear heartfelt insights about helping your child build resilience and why internalizing success matters just as much as achieving it. Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin is a licensed psychologist and executive coach. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University. Her expertise on impostor syndrome is regularly sought by the media, and she has appeared in outlets such as the Financial Times, the TODAY show, Good Morning America, Forbes, HuffPost, Refinery29, and more. Dr. Orbé-Austin has been an invited speaker at various national conferences. Her first book, Own Your Greatness: Overcome Impostor Syndrome, Beat Self-Doubt, and Succeed in Life (Ulysses Press, 2020) coauthored with her partner, Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin, was a finalist for the Foreword INDIES Book Award. Her second book, Your Unstoppable Greatness: Break Free of Impostor Syndrome, Cultivate Your Agency, and Achieve Your Ultimate Career Goals H(Ulysses Press, 2022) is focused on dealing with the systemic dynamics that keep impostor syndrome in place and how to directly combat those dynamics. Here are three inspiring takeaways from this conversation: Failure is not the enemy—it's the classroom. Helping your teen reframe failure as part of the growth process builds resilience and self-belief. Let them fail safely, and support their emotional regulation afterward. Celebrate the small wins. Whether it's improving by one point or making it through a tough day, acknowledging progress helps your teen internalize success and develop confidence in their abilities. Model and nurture self-worth. Teens learn by watching. When you savor your own wins and embrace your imperfections, you give your child permission to do the same—and combat imposter syndrome from the inside out. In a world obsessed with self-discovery and self-optimization, personality has become a billion-dollar obsession. From dating apps to hiring decisions, courtroom strategies to TikTok therapy-speak, we're constantly trying to decode ourselves—and each other. But how well do we really understand what makes us us?This week, we sit down with Dr. Sanna Balsari Palsule—psychologist, behavioral scientist, and co-creator of a wildly original game called Who Are You? that helps people reflect on their inner lives. With a background in personality psychology and a mind deeply attuned to the nuances of human behavior, Sanna guides us through the surprising history of personology, the rise of personality testing as a cultural phenomenon, and what the science actually says about traits like introversion, extroversion, and everything in between. We explore why the most popular personality tests are often the least accurate, how personality is both shaped and distorted by culture and social media, and whether “authenticity” is now just another form of performance. Can you fake it till you become it? Do we have different personalities online and offline? Is your workplace self the real you—or just a highly adapted version? And when people say they want to “change,” what are they really trying to change? We also dive into the psychological and physical toll of pretending to be someone you're not, and ask: Can personality actually evolve over time, or is who you are mostly fixed? And what does it take to shift? This is an episode for anyone who's ever taken a personality test, second-guessed who they are, or wondered if change is possible—or even desirable.Recommended for listeners curious about:The science and myth of personalityIdentity in the age of social mediaAuthenticity and self-expressionBehavioral psychology and everyday lifeAbout Dr. Sanna Linnea Balsari-Palsule: She is a psychologist, researcher, and creator whose work reshapes how we understand personality in an age obsessed with self-optimization. With a background in cognitive science and a Ph.D. in personality psychology, her research interrogates how identity is formed, performed, and reimagined—online, at work, and in our most intimate relationships. She is the creator of Who Are You, an award-winning card game that invites players to reflect on the tensions between authenticity, aspiration, and adaptation in modern life. Her insights have been featured in The Atlantic, BBC News, Refinery29, Psychology Today, and Fast Company, where she speaks to a generation fluent in therapy-speak but still searching for grounded ways to make sense of themselves. Whether she's exploring the curated selves of social media or the psychological cost of work personas, Dr. Balsari-Palsule offers a rare combination of intellectual rigor and deep empathy—inviting us to consider not just who we are, but who we're becoming.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 23, 2025 is: de rigueur • duh-ree-GUR • adjective De rigueur is a formal adjective that describes things that are necessary if you want to be fashionable, popular, socially acceptable, etc.—in other words, things required by fashion, etiquette, or custom. // Dark sunglasses are de rigueur these days among fashionistas. See the entry > Examples: “Summer swimwear has come a long way since itty-bitty string bikinis were de rigueur for the beach and by the pool.” — Amanda Randone, Refinery29.com, 31 May 2024 Did you know? It takes a lot of work to be cool. One needs to wear the right clothes, understand the right pop culture references, and use the right lingo before it ceases to be, ahem, on fleek. Rigor is required, is what we're saying—a strict precision in adhering to the dictates of fashion. Such rigor is at the crux of the adjective de rigueur, a direct borrowing from French where it means “out of strictness” or “according to strict etiquette.” Rigor is also what distinguishes de rigueur from a similar French borrowing, du jour. While the latter describes things that are popular, fashionable, or prominent at a particular time, as in “topic/style/buzzword du jour,” de rigueur describes that which is considered mandatory by fashion, etiquette, or custom for acceptability within a given social sphere or context. A bucket hat, for example, may be the chapeau du jour if it is currently popular or prevalent, but it would only be de rigueur if, among a certain crowd, you would be given the side-eye for not wearing one.

Alua has appeared on dozens of podcasts, and a Refinery29 video feature on Arthur and her work received ten million views across social platforms. For her clients and everyone who has been inspired by her humanity, Alua Arthur is a friend at the end of the world. As our country's leading death doula, she's spreading a transformative message: thinking about your death—whether imminent or not—will breathe wild, new potential into your life. Warm, generous, and funny AF, Alua supports and helps manage end-of-life care on many levels. The business matters, medical directives, memorial planning; but also honoring the quiet moments, when monitors are beeping and loved ones have stepped out to get some air—or maybe not shown up at all—and her clients become deeply contemplative and want to talk. Aching, unfinished business often emerges. Alua has been present for thousands of these sacred moments—when regrets, fears, secret joys, hidden affairs, and dim realities are finally said aloud. Alua Arthur combines intimate storytelling with a passionate appeal for loving, courageous end-of-life care—what she calls “death embrace.” Hers is a powerful testament to getting in touch with something deeper in our lives, by embracing the fact of our own mortality. “Hold that truth in your mind,” Alua says, “and wondrous things will begin to grow around it.

The house built around diversity, equity and inclusion is coming apart brick by brick. Since last summer, brands, retailers, holding companies and, most recently the federal government, have been dismantling (or retooling) DEI initiatives, many of which were built up after the murder of George Floyd and subsequent Black Lives Matter Movement of 2020. The “diversity” portion of diversity, equity and inclusion has become divisive, impacting multicultural marketing agencies, Black-owned brands and diverse publications. And they're starting to feel the ripple effects, according to Kirk McDonald, CEO of Sundial Media Group, holding company for brands like Essence magazine, Afropunk festival and Refinery29. Although, he said, it's too early to tell the full impact DEI's retooling (or rebrand) will have on the industry in terms of media spend, marketing budgets or consumer habits. McDonald recently sat down with the Digiday Podcast to talk about how Sundial's diverse publications, geared toward women and other historically marginalized communities, are navigating the pushback.

This week on the show Karen is joined by Viola Levy, journalist, founder of branding agency ‘Smart, Beauty Creative” and host of the Smart Beauty podcast, a show for beauty business owners who are looking to hone their brand voice. Getting the story of your brand and your products right is essential, and can be the difference between success and failure. That's why, in this interview, Viola and Karen cover all you need to know about transforming your business from a retailer to a storyteller.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Viola started her career as a journalist and found that a lot of the companies she was writing about were in the beauty sector. Whilst doing this work she noticed a gap in the market which, as she explains here, led her to set up her own company. Karen and Viola discuss the incredible rise of indie brands over the last decade, what this means for consumers, but also, how the bigger designer brands have reacted to this growth. As Karen often states, and Viola agrees, creating a story around your scents is the most important thing you can do in terms of marketing. Viola explains why this is a ‘non negotiable' and gives her insights into how to make this effective. Historically, brands have put all of their time and effort into creating a fragrance and then launched into the marketplace. However, as Viola explains, there is so much more value in bringing your customers along on the journey from day one.   BEST MOMENTS  “There's so much choice out there now, and that's a great thing. People like to change their perfume as often as they change their clothes.” “Brands have to have an opinion and a voice, they need to show they're passionate about more than just selling their products.” “AI is a great tool, but it shouldn't be in the driving seat. You'll always need a human touch.” EPISODE LINKS Smart Beauty Website Smart Beauty Podcast Smart Beauty Instagram Smart Beauty Linkedin Smart Beauty Email VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide             Artisan Perfumery Mastermind   ABOUT THE GUEST Having worked in the beauty industry for over 15 years, Viola is an award-winning journalist, copywriter and brand consultant. As an established writer, Viola has contributed to all sectors of the beauty world, with articles appearing in Vogue, Glamour, The Evening Standard, and Refinery29. In addition she has written copy for several major beauty brands and retailers, including Aromatherapy Associates, 111SKIN, Cult Beauty, Boots, By Terry, and Superdrug, and in 2019, she won a Fragrance Foundation Jasmine Award for Best Short Piece and was shortlisted for Best Social Engagement. She has also written global trend reports for major forecasting agency WGSN, focusing on how consumer needs and habits have changed since the global pandemic. From her years of experience, Viola has seen the beauty world rapidly change over the past decade. The way brands speak to customers has evolved. It's less about playing on women's low self-esteem, inventing problems (and products to “solve” them) or peddling false promises and miracles in jars. It's more about feeling better (not just by looking better), intelligent discussions and promoting inclusivity. Which is why she set up Smart Beauty Creative to create the next generation of forward-thinking, feminist brands, helping to pave the way for a new, diverse and more enlightened beauty industry. ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. Karen has inspired thousands of students to explore their olfactory sense and create their own personalised fragrances. With extensive product development experience in both the commercial perfumery and the organic skincare industry, Karen is able to offer a unique insight into creating natural and mixed media fragrances for fine fragrance, room scents and skincare/bodycare products using commercial perfumery techniques. A week later they found themselves crammed at a downtown restaurant, elbows tucked and leaning forward, deep in discussion about an age-old argument: are men only nice to women who they want to have sex with? A settlement was never reached. Not long after, Kareem posted a still of Mathieu Kassovitz' LA HAINE to his Instagram with the words, “I'm quitting comedy until someone casts me in a dramatic role.” Mary responded, “I'll cast you.” The goal was set: write a joint personal essay, conversing about sensitive topics, and transcribing everything into the structure of a film that would be feasible to produce on a microbudget. Kareem Rahma is a three-time Webby-nominated writer, producer, comedian, and musician. This week I spoke with the iconic writer and editor Christene Barberich. I first knew of her as the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Refinery29. I've loved her work for years, through R29, her own writing, and the podcast she hosted for many years called Unstyled, so when recent guest Erika Veurink connected us, I was thrilled. We spoke about starting R29 and what that time was like, reflecting on some of her best interviews with everyone from Linda Rodin to Jenny Slate. She also talked about leaving her role there and the excitement of new beginnings. At the root of her newest project, A Tiny Apt., is how the right environment fosters growth, creativity, safety and vulnerability, particularly as that relates to big dramatic change and leaps of faith. She discussed the changes she's been navigating: becoming a mom later in life; the double standard of aging especially as it relates to work; how she's redefining success and ambition as she enters this new era of her work and life. I loved getting to talk to her and I'm eager for her to return.  Let us know if you listen! Show notes:- Find Christene on the Web | Instagram- Unstyled podcast | A Tiny Apt. substack- Find me on IG: @letitouttt + @katiedalebout | Substack- A couple spots left in the Creative Clinic: book a call with me here- Check out the Let It Out Kits | Write Kit | Talk Kit Waitlist- More on Creative Underdogs/In Process here | waitlist If you liked this episode, try out from the archive:Episode 452 Long Live: Erika Veurink Is Here (Part 1 of 2)
