PopaHALLics #142 "Aren't You Somebody?"We know the face, but not the name, whether that's members of the Eagles (biography "Life in the Fast Lane") or comedian Martin Short being mistaken for a waiter (memoir "I Must Say"). But being somebody can also apply to coming into your own, whether you're seeking your first orgasm after a terminal diagnosis ("Dying for Sex") or finding new purpose in your life in a tiny Arctic village ("North of North"). Welcome to this episode's pop offerings!Streaming:"North of North," Netflix. A goodhearted, if bumbling, Inuk woman (Anna Lambe) tries to reinvent herself in this warm, lighthearted comedy set in a tiny Arctic town. Also starring Maika Harper as her feisty mother and Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe on "24") as her boss"Dying for Sex," Hulu, FX, Disney +. In this comedy drama based on a real woman's podcast and memoir, Molly (Michelle Williams) is diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer and decides to explore her sexual desires before it's too late. With Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, Sissy Spacek and Jay Duplass."Small Things Like These," Hulu. A coal merchant (Cillian Murphy) uncovers disturbing secrets about the convent in an Irish village. This 2024 historical drama is adapted from Claire Keegan's novel. Books:"Life in the Fast Lane: The Eagles' Reckless Ride Down the Rock & Roll Highway," by Mick Wall. This no-holds-barred biography written with rock 'n roll attitude traces the rise of one of the best-selling acts of all time. And how money, cocaine, and egos affected their relationships and music."A Thousand Threads," by Neneh Cherry. This joyful autobiography looks at the fascinating life of the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter. She grew up in a bohemian family in Stockholm, New York, and London. Her own music—a mix of punk funk, hip hop, and UK street soul—helped usher in a new wave of black British club culture."I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Genius," by Martin Short. This 2014 memoir is funny, heartfelt, and chock full of celebrities (from buddies like Steve Martin to cringey encounters with Sinatra, Hepburn, and Tony Bennett). It's surprisingly poignant, as Short recounts the loss of a beloved brother and his parents by age 20 and his wife Nancy's battle with cancer. The memoir was published seven years before "Only Murders in the Building" would make Short a TV star again.Music:PopaHALLics #142 Playlist (Eagles) features the California band's hits as well as music from Neneh Cherry (memoir "A Thousand Threads") and her talented family. Tough podcast episode to find just one series for TV Gold Show of the Week! Three very impressive American dramas to choose from. You are going to need access to Disney+ and AppleTV+ accounts to enjoy them all.• Good American Family (Disney+, 8 episodes) A synopsis that starts "[a series] about the adoption of a child with dwarfism and the subsequent abandonment of the child" doesn't scream must-watch. But a cast led by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplas make this a compelling watch.• Dying For Sex (Disney+, 8 episodes) A comedy with a difference features Michelle Williams literally dying for sex. Half hour episodes fly by thanks in part to great supporting cast including Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney and Sissy Spacek.• Your Friends and Neighbours (AppleTV+, 10 episodes) Jon Hamm turns in an acting masterclass in arguably his best role since Mad Men. And with a character not totally dissimilar to that series' Don Draper. Hamm leads a good life in finance markets, but he finds himself failing to make ends meet and he resorts to drastic measures.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The premise might be a tough sell: a young woman attempts to finally own her sexuality following a terminal diagnosis. In the new show Dying For Sex, Michelle Williams stars as a cancer patient confronting the unsatisfying relationships in her life. The series is also a raunchy sex comedy that suggests it's never too late to insist on your own happiness. And it's got a stellar cast, including Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, and Sissy Spacek.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Can we have fun? David Leitch says YESSSS. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spend two hours trading kindergarten-level insults about each other's height and baldness while saving the world from a techno-virus and Super Smart Idris Elba. Being a Fast & Furious movie, we obviously have FAMILY with Venessa Kirby and Helen Mirren… So we're now up to 5 perfect people to cast in a movie. Sprinkle in Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Hart, Rob Delaney, Cliff Curtis, Eiza González. I mean, you had us at David Leitch. But the cast of this thing is everyone we want to hang out with for two hours. So… That means it's time for a new Great Bad Movies episode. Greg and Joe discuss how their perception of this movie has changed in the last 5 years, explain “Hobbs & Shaw Travel Logic,” and where Death Race would fit in the Fast & Furious Power Rankings. As always, they create drinking games for the film and answer the most important questions. This week we have Irish comedy royalty round for dinner, the gorgeous Sharon Horgan. Sharon popped to New Cross and brought her two gorgeous daughters with her. Mum made a Salmon en croute, and I made a Pannetone Bread and Butter pudding. We learned all about Sharon growing up in pubs in Hackney and Ireland, living in squats and being fed by Hare Krishna, writing and working with friend of the pod Rob Delaney on Catastrophe, filming Bad Sisters in Ireland and creating Motherland and brand new spin off Amandaland (which we're very excited for!). Sharon is a total delight, and has co-created some of our favourite series on the telly. Bad Sisters is currently in it's second series and is streaming on Apple TV+ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week we have our favourite Bostonian comedy actor joining us for lunch at mine, and what a treat it was! Mum was over the moon to have the ‘dazzlingly handsome' Rob in front of her, and - over an absolutely delish Nigel Slater peach and poached chicken salad - we heard all of his hilarious and heartwarming stories. He told us about meeting his wife at a summer camp 20 years ago, joining an olive oil club with his next door neighbour, working with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the horrendous food poisoning he got from a dodgy oyster, and we've found another Table Manners guest with a penchant for a cold water swim! Rob is not only a fabulous actor, but also a great cook apparently - we're coming round for a chicken noodle soup soon! Rob is currently staring in Bad Monkey which is available to stream now on Apple TV+. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Comedians have the ability to be unsparingly honest in ways that buck all cultural norms. It's a truth-telling that so many of us crave. Cue Rob Delaney. Rob is a comedian, actor, writer, and director. His memoir, A Heart That Works is an unsparing account of the death of his beautiful son, Henry. Rob lives in London with his family where Kate visited him for this honest and hilarious conversation. Kate and Rob discuss: The importance of finding people who really understand what you're feeling What not to say to people whose kids have died How tragic loss exiles you to a planet where only those who understand grief live The ways we hope grief metabolizes in us and transforms us into empathetic, heart-open kinds of people Rob wants us all to understand that if the unthinkable happens, our hearts still beat so strong in truth and love. The hero that loves to eat chimichangas while executing a perfect superhero landing is again knocking at your door! The merc with the mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, is back and he's bringing a “friend.” You thought he was dead at the end of “Logan” but the Disney Marvel money was just too sweet and so Hugh Jackman as Wolverine comes back to join our indestructible hero in “Deadpool and Wolverine.” No such resurrection for Marvel will come from this movie alone but the prospect of getting these two all-time fav characters together is exciting. In this third Deadpool movie, our beloved Wham fan has gone limp in life and he's looking for a way to matter again. He's still got the love of all his friends but he there's someone in his life that he wants back and he's willing to do anything. Deadpool soon receives an offer to give him almost exactly what he wants but at a terrible price. Enter Wolverine into the movie when Deadpool learns he's an important part of everything going on in this movie. They don't exactly start out creating their own secret handshake and riding a tandem bicycle. Wolverine, who can count being super anti-social as one one of his superpowers, doesn't want to split a PB&J sandwich with Deadpool, much less help him in his quest. Will Deadpool be able to win Wolverine over? How many Madonna songs will be in the soundtrack? Does Jonathan Majors make a cameo? Is it worth finding out? Check out this episode to maybe find out. “Deadpool and Wolverine” also stars Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfayden, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Stefan Kapicic and Randal Reeder. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the brilliant comic, writer, actor and author ROB DELANEY!Rob's presence was really made clear back in the glory days of the innocent social media platform Twitter, when such activities felt more playful and fun, and podcasting was still formulating and developing. Since then he's truly made it obvious why such a presence is necessary, as a wearer of many hats in the comic-leaning section of the greater media world. You'll hear about Rob's more recent projects, including his character development in Deadpool & Wolverine, his book where he writes openly about dearly departed son Henry, social media, the NHS, politics (where do you start) and so much more - a delicate balance of fun and moving which will really enrich your listening day. When actor Rob Delaney's two-and-a-half-year-old son Henry died, Rob decided to share his family's experience with Henry's illness and death with the world. What emerged was the deeply personal memoir, “A Heart That Works.” In this best-of episode from 2023, Sam asks Rob about how his approach to his career shifted after Henry passed away, a seemingly small choice he made at a recovery meeting that ultimately changed the trajectory of his life, and his thoughts on the platform formerly known as Twitter going off the rails.
