Drop us a line or two . . .In this episode, Queenie & TT do what midlife women everywhere are doing right now: trying to hold it together when winter, responsibility, and the state of the world are doing the most to break us. There's frigid weather, indoor soccer in inflatable buildings, sports stress, and the honest truth that sometimes the best mental health plan is: go outside once… and then refuse to leave the house again. They share what they're consuming today (pink lemonade live rosin gummies and a Space Cake pre-roll), talk about the strange “nap trap” that hits after a big breakfast, and discuss why sativa days are sometimes a medical necessity for functioning humans. Then the episode turns into a surprisingly juicy mix of:why AI tools like Suno are still creative tools (just like nobody grinds their own paint anymore) the ongoing Canadian citizenship saga (passport renewal + trying to lure family north like it's a Zillow listing with better healthcare) a big moment of good news: New York's Medical Aid in Dying bill being signed, and why having the option matters a fresh round of “Was Cannabis Involved or Is This Just Kaka?” featuring: honey wedding favors gone wrong and the DEA embarrassing itself with an emoji “drug decoder” that absolutely deserves public mocking And the Fuck-It List entry this week is pure midlife enlightenment:
This is a preview of a bonus episode! Find the whole thing here! Disclaimer: This episode contains references to SA and CSA, that may be upsetting to some listeners. This week, we're joined again by actor, director, and screenwriter Jonathan Daniel Brown to talk about Hollywood's AI infatuation, and how it's producing cheaper, and worse, films. Jonathan talks to us about how the AI industry entered Hollywood, the pressures it has placed on creators by forcing out technical expertise, and how it's driving film production out of Hollywood, and even out of the United States entirely. We also talk about the recent cache of Epstein files, and, among all the darkness and evil, the revelation that Epstein and his acolytes seemed to also be obsessed with posting online. Bob talks to Larry Sharpe on his run for NY Governor, the importance of primaries, funding a run for office, his policies and ideas for NY, and why people should vote for him, Bob talks about Larry Sharpe's chances for winning the Republican primary, Governor Hochul signing Medical Aid in Dying, Josh Allen voted 3rd in NFL MVP voting, Bob gives a personal update, and Bob takes calls.
In my view, Michelle Lapierre was fortunate: she and her mother talked openly about end-of-life choices well before those conversations became necessary. And when her mother did become terminally ill, she was clear about her choice: to use Medical Aid in Dying, which has been legal in Colorado since 2017. What led them to have such clarity? What was the experience like? How does Michelle feel about it, years later? How do states like Colorado regulate and advocate for individuals to have this medical option at the end of life? Join us to hear an intimate and educated perspective on MAiD.
Medical aid in dying is legal in more than a dozen states, but not in Virginia, where efforts to authorize the practice have repeatedly stalled amid ethical and medical concerns.

When a person is near the end of their life loved ones are often faced with some of the most difficult issues they will ever face as a family. No matter what the circumstance, all of us want those we care about to live, and to die, on their terms.Making that happen often the responsibility of people like Dr. Howard Stein, Medical Director of Bioethics at Centrastate Hospital in Freehold, who joined Rabbi Pont this week for a wide reaching conversation about bioethics, New Jersey's Medical Aid in Dying Act, and how to help families and patients go through these horrible moments with dignity.
This week, we're joined by political journalist Zoë Grünewald, who talks to us about the attempts to regulate and rein in X in the UK, and whether the state has the ability to regulate an AI system like Grok. Zoë also explains why some MPs are unwilling to let go of their accounts, even as the platform gets overrun with abusive and racist material. Of course, we also touch on the most important story facing the world right now, namely, the implosion of the Beckham family, and ask whether they could be put back together through the power of Cruz Beckham's electro-indie musical project. In December 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul reached an agreement with the New York state legislature to pass the Medical Aid in Dying Act, which would legalize what proponents call "death with dignity" and what critics call physician-assisted suicide. About a dozen other states already permit doctors to prescribe lethal medication to terminally ill patients who request it. The state of Oregon pioneered this practice in 1994 and it has since spread across the Western world. Now, there are people who have an ailing parent or grandparent or, God forbid, a child who is genuinely suffering—suffering in agonizing ways that make the cessation of that suffering seem like the only humane response. It would be inhuman not to acknowledge the enormous emotional, psychological, and physical burdens of that pain, or to minimize it. But the question of physician-assisted suicide ultimately is one about medical ethics as upheld by the physician, the distorting market effects of this practice, and social policy. What happens when the state makes it possible for large numbers of people to receive this option from the very person whose profession calls on him to heal and not harm? What happens to the moral foundations of our culture when assisted death becomes something we learn to abide? The evidence from places like Canada and the Netherlands begins to answer those questions in deeply disturbing ways. What started as a carefully limited option for the terminally ill has expanded dramatically. In Canada, deaths from medically assisted dying rose from 4,480 in 2018 to over 10,000 in 2021—and by 2022 accounted for 4 percent of all deaths in the country. Patients are now approved for reasons of poverty, loneliness, and mental illness. Veterans seeking PTSD treatment are sometimes offered death instead. The physician and educator Leon Kass warned nearly 30 years ago that once we break the ancient taboo against doctors killing patients, the practice would prove "in principle unregulable." The evidence now seems to vindicate that warning. To discuss this topic, Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver is joined by Aaron Rothstein, a neurologist at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellow in bioethics and American democracy at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. They discuss the origins of the modern euthanasia movement, and the disturbing reality of how euthanasia functions once legalized. Send us a textA single week can redraw moral boundaries. When New York and Illinois announced support for “Medical Aid in Dying,” the language sounded compassionate, but the shift was seismic: freedom recast as control over life's endpoint, medicine repositioned to facilitate death, and “autonomy” installed as the supreme value. We trace what that framing means in practice, why euphemisms matter, and how policy teaches culture what to accept as normal. We unpack the promised safeguards—adult age limits, terminal diagnoses, repeated requests—and ask the harder question: what counts as voluntary when bills mount, caregivers strain, and the vulnerable fear becoming a burden? Then we look north. Canada's MAID began narrow and widened to include suffering untethered from foreseeable death, with proposals to extend to mental illness alone. The pattern repeats across Belgium and the Netherlands: once the line moves, categories soften, incentives tilt, and death becomes a system option.Along the way, we reflect on how a culture of death doesn't stay contained to clinics or statutes. Despair listens when society calls death “care.” We honor victims by name, consider the moral spillover from policy to personal choices, and argue for a different vision of dignity rooted in belonging, presence, and community. Autonomy without limits isolates; love with obligations sustains. Choosing life is not naïve—it's disciplined solidarity: palliative care that comforts, mental health access that persists, families and neighbors who refuse to disappear when pain doesn't yield to quick fixes. If this conversation challenged your assumptions or gave you language for a hard debate, share it with someone you trust. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us: where should a humane society draw the line—and how will you show up for someone who's suffering? Support the show

One of the most complex medical, ethical, moral, and religious questions of our era is that of physician-assisted suicide—also known as Medical Aid in Dying, or MAID. Eleven U.S. states and Washington, D.C. have legalized some form of MAID for terminally ill patients. And New York might join them. Over the summer, a Medical Aid in Dying Act passed New York's state legislature. It is now sitting on Governor Kathy Hochul's desk as she decides whether to sign it into law. Under the proposed New York bill, terminally ill adults with a prognosis of six months or less to live would be able to access a prescribed, self-administered life-ending medication. Supporters argue that this is a compassionate option—one that can relieve people of immense pain and suffering, allowing patients to choose when and where they die, and to do so surrounded by loved ones. Opponents see this as a violation of physicians' fundamental oath to do no harm. They also worry that while access may begin narrowly, it could expand over time to include people seeking death for reasons other than terminal illness—such as mental suffering or simply a desire to stop living. Cases like this have already occurred in Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, and Switzerland. Rafaela Siewert sat down with two experts who see this topic very differently for a heated debate. David Hoffman is a healthcare attorney, clinical ethicist, and professor of bioethics at Columbia University. He argues that hypothetical future abuses of MAID shouldn't outweigh the needs of terminal patients who need this option now. Dr. Lydia Dugdale is a physician, medical ethicist, and professor of medicine at Columbia University. In her view, legalizing this practice of physician-assisted suicide risks undermining the responsibilities of governments, medical systems, and families to care for the mentally ill, the poor, and the physically disabled. And she fears that the potential for excessively expanded access over time is too great. We are among the many Americans who do not know what the right answer is. We see both sides—which is why grappling with the nuances of this subject is so important. This is a debate you won't want to miss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The book is epic in its breadth (looking at labour unrest around the world and across a long period of time), but also firmly committed to viewing class struggle from the bottom up.But most important about the book is how deeply materialist and methodical it is in how it outlines the concrete conditions that gave space for working-class struggle, and how those struggles forced capital to think of new strategies in order to deal with it. Moreover, in doing so, her book also helps us to think and to strategise about working-class organising today.Listen to the full episode here:E113: Radical Reads – Forces of LabourMore informationBuy Forces of Labour from an independent bookshop (or read it online here)Check out our collection of books about labour movement history in our online shopSee the webpage for this episode at https://workingclasshistory.com/podcast/e113-radical-reads-forces-of-labour/AcknowledgementsThanks to our patreon supporters for making this podcast possible.
