In this episode, Pastor Olubi highlights the transformative journey of Apostle Paul—once a persecutor of the Church, later a pioneer of apostolic truth. Educated as a Pharisee and deeply rooted in the law, Paul's background became a foundation for interpreting spiritual realities with precision and grace. Pastor Olubi emphasizes that Paul's rapid spiritual growth positioned him as a leader beyond his senior contemporaries. His ministry was built not on gifts, but on revelation, discipline, and intimacy with Christ. True spiritual maturity, as seen in Paul, comes from humility, obedience, and revelation—not just tenure in the faith. His life calls believers to embrace rigorous preparation, grow in godly character, and manifest the fullness of Christ. You can follow Pastor Olubi Johnson on X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. A Winnipeg Free Press columnist was invited to meet with residents and stakeholders to hear their concerns about locating the NDP's proposed Safe Consumption Site in their area. Episode 34 reviews in three acts the invitation to Dan Lett, the aspersions he made about those questioning the proposal, and the scathing response to his smears from a woman who lives in the East Exchange.Act 1- On Friday morning, after "an email exchange between you and a resident of the exchange was shared with me yesterday," a Point Douglas mother of five contacted Dan Lett. "If you're truly confident that the site will bring safety and stability to Point Douglas, then we would like to extend a sincere invitation: join us for a walk through our community. Let us show you our homes, our streets, our schools, our challenges, and our strengths."She told Lett, "What's striking is that, in all these confident assertions, you've never once explained how this safety is achieved nor have you offered any data to support such claims... We'd be happy to sit down afterward for a beer or a gin and tonic and have a real, face-to-face conversation. Because this isn't just policy. It's our lived experience."You'll also hear about the "math crisis" facing the communities east of Main Street, where "most individuals (targeted by) the SCS are not dipping into RRSPs or investment portfolios" but instead turn to theft and crime from area yards and businesses to find the thousands of dollars needed every day to pay their drug dealers.15.45 Act 2 - Dan Lett turned down the offer, instead stereotyping the concerned residents as lacking empathy for addicts and smearing them as "being part of the ongoing problem." "It is with great sadness and some bemusement that I respond to another active member of your neighborhood ..."Lett's sanctimonious response was a stunning example of how legacy media in Winnipeg don't just repeat the narrative supporting a drug use site - they promote it."I've owned businesses right in your neighborhood. I honestly don't need to educated about the problems that exist."This Ivory Tower attitude from supporters of an SCS across from Argyle High School like Dan Lett resemble the ultimate NIMBYs. It's easy to volunteer other families and property owners to deal with the costs and trauma that accompany every SCS created in Canada.27.35 Act 3- A Free Press subscriber who was part of the email chain sent a reply to Lett about his crass remarks and to his biased coverage of the site controversy."The dismissive remarks and palpable tone of contempt toward residents questioning policy decisions have led me to reconsider my continued support (for the Free Press)... Residents raising concerns about the proposed supervised consumption site at 200 Disraeli are not “rapid gentrifiers.” They are concerned neighbours seeking accountability and balance."Her neighbours who are recovering addicts "deserve not to be continuously exposed to open drug use and dealing in their community. Nor should it amuse you."She continued, "The proposed location—directly across from a high school and mere meters from daycares, churches, and youth centres—contradicts the Premier's assurances that such facilities would not be placed near schools. These are serious issues requiring thoughtful coverage, not mockery."Hear how she refuted Lett's allegation "not a single one" of the opponents had brought forward other ideas, and pointed out the serious questions about public safety, site management, and "the over-reliance on encampments" that are yet unanswered by the NDP and site applicants, the Aboriginal Wellness Centre. She again invited him to meet with the community, after she educated him. What will Dan Lett do next?*****Wab Kinew and his neighbours got a flyer from those concerned residents - read Marty's report:https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/columnists/gold-would-you-allow-this-next-to-your-childs-school-kinews-neighbours-demand-answers-on-drug-site-plan

Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to have back on the show for a second time: United Church Minister turned whistleblower, Canadian Hero, humanitarian, father of two, published writer and author, public speaker and podcaster, documentary filmmaker, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, co-founder of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State, righteous soul, and Eagle Strong Voice: Kevin AnnettIn case you missed either of Kevin's past 2 episodes or the ‘Movie Night' feature where we aired his acclaimed documentary, ‘Unrepentant', here is a brief intro to his testimony and background along with some information on what we will be talking about today: Born in Edmonton in 1956, Kevin's early life was steeped in a deep sense of justice and curiosity about the world. Educated at the University of British Columbia, he earned degrees in Anthropology, Political Science and beyond preparing him for a life of service. Ordained in 1990, he began his ministry in Port Alberni, British Columbia, in 1992, unaware that this small coastal town would become the crucible for his life's mission. It was here, among a community scarred by poverty and historical trauma, that Kevin first heard the heart-wrenching stories of Indigenous survivors of the residential schools - stories of abuse, cultural erasure, and unimaginable loss. What began as an effort to open his church's doors to Indigenous congregants quickly transformed into a profound awakening. Survivors shared accounts of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, including deliberate programming designed to silence them through fear, shame, and self-destruction. Kevin learned of the sinister mechanisms of mind control - techniques rooted in trauma-based programming, akin to the CIA's MKULTRA experiments, used to break spirits and ensure compliance. Kevin's pursuit of truth came at a profound personal cost. His refusal to stay silent led to his dismissal from the United Church in 1995, followed by a campaign of defamation, blacklisting, and the painful loss of his family. Yet, these trials only deepened his resolve. He saw the parallels between the survivors' programmed silence and the societal denial that shielded the perpetrators. Undeterred, he founded the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS) in 2010, uniting survivors across 26 countries to seek justice. The ITCCS prosecuted figures like Pope Benedict and Canadian officials for crimes against humanity, sparking global awareness of child trafficking and institutional abuse. Discussion Highlights:Demographic megatrends: Population is shrinking and aging across Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe; fertility rates remain low and often below replacement levels. Some Western nations rely on immigration to maintain workforce levels.Economic and fiscal impact: Falling birth rates and working-age populations threaten tax bases needed to sustain pensions, healthcare, and living standards.Policy responses: Hungary's family incentives briefly boosted fertility before rates fell again to ~1.38. Scandinavian social policies helped but haven't reached replacement fertility. Immigration remains essential.Healthy life expectancy: Lifespans have increased significantly but healthy years have not kept pace. Promoting healthy ageing is critical for extending working lives.Political narratives: Demographic anxieties underpin nationalist rhetoric in Hungary and Bulgaria. In Western Europe, aging populations amplify both immigrant integration debates and depopulation concerns (e.g., rural Spain).Ukraine and modern warfare: Judah shares frontline insights: drones, electronic warfare countermeasures, fiber-optic-controlled UAVs, land drones for logistics and medevac, and upcoming AI-swarm tech reshape battlefield dynamics.Ukrainian resilience: On-the-ground mindset is “phlegmatic pragmatism”—facing war fatigue, debate over ceasefire, but determination to adapt.Europe's future: Post-Brexit Britain re-engages with EU; EU enlargement may take a variable-geometry approach. Western Balkans and Ukraine may enter through piecemeal integration rather than simultaneous accession.Guest BioTim JudahA British journalist and author Tim Judah is a Special Correspondent for The Economist and a longtime commentator on Eastern Europe. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 313: Christophe Nuyens A huge admirer of the Star Wars movie Rogue One, cinematographer Christophe Nuyens, SBC embraced the opportunity to serve as director of photography for the first six episodes of Andor Season 2. Christophe focused on expanding Andor's universe, meticulously crafting distinct visual identities for each world. He leaned into naturalistic lighting and a dynamic use of color to evoke a range of moods. “This show has so many different worlds and sets and every world has a different look,” he says. “Mina-rau was sunny, Chandrila was quite shiny and chic. Then you had Ghorman, which was darker and like a town in the mountains with blue light all the time. So we had all our different sets and it was really nice to play with those things to create all those little different moods.” Christophe was committed to giving the world of Andor a tangible sense of reality. The sets were expansive, with ample room for the camera to move around and explore. Practical effects were used when possible to enhance authenticity, complemented by the strategic use of LED video wall panels for realistic backdrops, such as the depiction of rain falling outside a Coruscant apartment window. Christophe approached the lighting design as if shooting on location. In collaboration with director Ariel Kleiman, he adopted a philosophy of minimal camera movement, completing scenes with few shots and concise coverage. Subtle lighting cues, lens flares and camera moves smoothly transitioned each scene into the next. One of the most memorable sequences in Andor Season 2 is the wedding of characters Leida Mothma and Stekan Sculdun. The event is not just a lavish affair but a crucial narrative beat in Mon Mothma's (Genevieve O'Reilly) journey, underpinning a complex emotional and political storyline. Following the ceremony, guests dance together in a huge celebration, a sequence that presented a unique and enjoyable challenge for Christophe. He wanted to capture a nightclub atmosphere despite the daytime setting. “I end up with the idea of trying to tell a time-lapse story light-wise,” he explains. “In the beginning of the wedding, the sun is quite high. It's bright outside the during the wedding. The sun is going lower and lower and lower, until the end when the sun is just on the horizon peeping inside and making it super flare-y. We didn't have strobes or party lights, but it gave us something special to play with.” The intricate dance sequence, featuring numerous extras and two Steadicams weaving through the celebration to reflect Mon Mothma's disorienting experience, required a full day of filming. (For dedicated Andor fans, an extended one-hour version of this captivating dance scene is available to watch on YouTube.) Educated at film school in Brussels, Christophe knew early on that cinematography was his calling. He values continuous learning as a cinematographer. “It's important for me to keep evolving because the moment that I feel I'm doing something as a routine, then I want to do something else. I need to have the feeling that I'm learning every time and every director is different.” Find Christophe Nuyens: Instagram: @christophenuyens The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: @TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Blue Sky: @thecinepod.bsky.social

This Day in Legal History: Frederic William Maitland BornOn this day in legal history, May 28, 1850, Frederic William Maitland was born in London. Maitland would go on to become one of the most influential legal historians of the 19th century, widely regarded as the father of modern English legal history. Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, Maitland initially studied moral sciences before turning to the law. He was called to the bar in 1876 but soon found his true calling in historical scholarship. In 1888, he was appointed Downing Professor of the Laws of England at Cambridge, a post he held until his death in 1906.Maitland's most enduring contribution came through his collaboration with Sir Frederick Pollock on The History of English Law before the Time of Edward I, published in 1895. This seminal work remains a cornerstone of English legal historiography, notable for its rigorous use of original sources and its narrative clarity. Maitland brought a historian's eye to legal development, emphasizing the role of institutions and the evolution of legal ideas over time. His scholarship reshaped the understanding of English common law, highlighting its medieval roots and its organic, often non-linear, development.Beyond his academic writings, Maitland played a critical role in editing and publishing primary legal texts, including year books and medieval court rolls, through his work with the Selden Society, of which he was a founding member. His meticulous editing practices set new standards for legal historical methodology. Despite a relatively short life—he died at 56—Maitland's intellectual legacy continues to influence the study of common law traditions worldwide.A federal judge ruled that a lawsuit brought by 14 states against Elon Musk and the federal agency DOGE could proceed, while dismissing claims against President Donald Trump. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan found that the states had presented a plausible argument that Musk's aggressive cost-cutting measures lacked legal authorization, though she emphasized that courts cannot interfere with a president's official duties. The lawsuit, initiated in February by attorneys general from states including Oregon and New Mexico, argues that Musk has been given sweeping, unchecked authority over federal operations without Senate confirmation or congressional authorization. The states contend this violates constitutional requirements, as Musk has not been formally appointed or confirmed for any federal office.DOGE, a newly formed government efficiency agency led by Musk, has been rapidly eliminating jobs and programs deemed wasteful, sparking significant legal pushback. Since its inception under Trump's second-term reforms, roughly 20 related lawsuits have emerged, with courts issuing mixed rulings. Critics argue the agency operates outside constitutional bounds, while supporters claim it is essential to fiscal reform.US judge allows states' lawsuit against DOGE to proceed | ReutersA federal judge ruled that President Donald Trump's executive order against law firm WilmerHale was unconstitutional, marking the third time courts have rejected such orders targeting legal opponents. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon concluded that Trump's order retaliated against WilmerHale for hiring Robert Mueller, violating the firm's rights to free speech and due process. Mueller, a former special counsel, led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election—a probe Trump has long criticized. The executive order sought to strip WilmerHale's attorneys of security clearances, ban the firm from federal buildings, and block its clients from receiving government contracts. Judge Leon described the move as a “staggering punishment” that undermined the firm's ability to function and penalized it for protected political expression. WilmerHale celebrated the ruling, asserting that it upholds critical constitutional principles. This decision follows similar rulings by Judges Beryl Howell and John Bates, who struck down Trump's executive orders targeting Perkins Coie and Jenner & Block, respectively. A fourth ruling is pending regarding Susman Godfrey. The Department of Justice has defended the orders, insisting they fall within the president's authority, and may appeal Leon's decision. Some firms, such as Paul Weiss and Latham & Watkins, reached agreements with the Trump administration to avoid penalties by pledging nearly $1 billion in pro bono services. These deals have sparked concern within the legal industry, with critics warning they reflect dangerous capitulation to political pressure.Judge bars Trump order against law firm tied to Robert Mueller | ReutersWilmerHale Wins Quick Ruling Against Trump's Executive Order (2)U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman temporarily blocked the Trump administration from rescinding federal approval and funding related to New York City's congestion pricing program. The judge's order came just one day before the U.S. Department of Transportation, under Secretary Sean Duffy, was set to begin withholding environmental approvals and project funds from the city and state. The Trump administration had revoked the program's federal green light in February, arguing it unfairly burdened drivers and lacked a free highway alternative. New York officials, including Governor Kathy Hochul and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), sued to stop the federal rollback, calling the move politically motivated and unconstitutional. The congestion pricing program, which began in January, charges most vehicles $9 during peak hours to enter Manhattan below 60th Street. Designed to reduce traffic and fund transit improvements, the initiative has shown clear signs of success in its first 100 days. Traffic congestion has dropped significantly, with up to 6 million fewer cars entering lower Manhattan compared to the same period a year ago. Commutes through bottlenecks like the Holland Tunnel have seen delays cut by nearly half, and traffic-related injuries in the zone have also declined by about 50%.Other measurable benefits include a 70% drop in complaints about excessive car-honking and improved bus speeds to the point that some drivers have to slow down to stay on schedule. Economic indicators like Broadway ticket sales and pedestrian foot traffic are up, suggesting that the tolls haven't deterred business as critics warned. Public transit ridership has also increased, particularly on the LIRR and Metro-North, reinforcing that many former drivers are switching to trains.Despite early skepticism and political backlash—including Trump's own social media mockery of the program—the numbers show that congestion pricing is working. The MTA expects to raise about $500 million this year, funding upgrades like subway elevators, electric buses, and the next phase of the Second Avenue Subway. While final legal outcomes remain uncertain, for now, both traffic and funding are moving in the right direction.US judge temporarily blocks Trump administration from killing New York congestion program | ReutersHow Well Is Congestion Pricing Doing? Get notified when registration Dr. Jacobs' class goes live: https://forms.gle/pKYCWnHA1gToDxZv9In this Q&A episode, Dr. Jacobs addresses ten challenging questions about the problem of evil and divine foreknowledge. He tackles issues ranging from whether God's plan for salvation required evil acts, to how divine foreknowledge works when predicted events don't occur, to why Jewish and Christian traditions differ on evil as privation of good. Dr. Jacobs also examines whether ethical frameworks create false dilemmas, explores the concept of a malicious deity, and clarifies Eastern Orthodox views on body-soul unity. Yet the crucifixion required specific acts of evil: unjust torture and execution of Christ. How do you reconcile this? If God's plan needed these acts of injustice, doesn't this complicate the idea that evil is merely a byproduct of free choices?Question 2:In 1 Samuel 23, God tells David that Keilah will deliver him to Saul. David leaves and isn't captured. If God knows the future because it happens, how does He know Keilah will betray David? Educated prediction based on knowing their hearts?Question 3:You contrast human utilitarian decision-making with God's. But in the "baby Hitler" example, isn't the reasoning based on "don't kill innocent people"? Could this be another false dilemma?Question 4:If God isn't utilitarian, how does Jesus say about a blind man that he wasn't blind because of sin but to show God's glory? Isn't that God choosing evil to make good?Question 5:If you could stop your child from being *****, would you? If so, why wouldn't God?Question 6:How might natural disasters fit into this discussion?Question 7:You say "Jewish and Christian response" about evil's etiology, but Rabbinical tradition rejected evil as privation of good. Where do you see this in Jewish sources—that God allows evil for free agents but doesn't will it?Question 8:Why haven't I heard the problem of evil handled by positing a malicious God? Why doesn't anyone argue evil exists because "God" is malicious and sadistic?Question 9:Are there evil archetypes? If evil is distortion, every "evil archetype" is distortion too. Can archetypes as universal forces really be distorted?Question 10:Dr. Jacobs speaks of strict body-soul dualism as separate parts. However, Eastern Orthodox position seems holistic—soul and body inseparable. Since the Fathers predated modernist splits, didn't they have a unified view of personhood?

“This week, the global stage is on fire—and at the center of it is Donald Trump. After wrapping up high-stakes stops in Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Qatar, Trump now heads to Istanbul, and this isn't just another handshake tour. In Saudi Arabia, he sealed $600 billion in AI and energy investments—with U.S. tech giants backing the kingdom's ambitions to lead in artificial intelligence. In Qatar, he witnessed the largest aircraft deal in Boeing's history. And in Syria—shockingly—he lifted all U.S. sanctions and met with the new president, pushing Syria to join the Abraham Accords. But now: Istanbul. On paper, Trump is attending a reception at Trump Towers Istanbul. But in the backdrop? Vladimir Putin's sudden call for Ukraine peace talks. So is this a genuine push for peace—or a global power play? Turkey, as a NATO member that's kept close ties with both the West and Russia, is the perfect stage for a strategic pivot. Trump showing up in Istanbul right now, at a site that bears his name, may signal he's ready to step in as a deal-maker—or a kingmaker—in the Ukraine conflict. Is he positioning himself as the only one who can broker peace between Ukraine and Russia? Or is this about optics, leverage, and legacy? On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Jacob Shell. Shell is a professor of geography at Temple University and author of Transportation and Revolt: Pigeons, Mules, Canals, and the Giants of the Monsoon Forest: Living and Working with Elephants. Educated at Columbia and Syracuse universities, Shell is active on social media, where he comments extensively on the politicization of the academy. The conversation begins with Shell's piece in Compact Magazine, To Save Academia, Hire Conservatives. The more than 3,000-word essay argues that academia must diversify ideologically to save itself, but also engage in a wider range of scholarship. Shell points out that US academia has become an ideological monoculture, with an overwhelming dominance of left-leaning faculty, especially at elite institutions. This imbalance, driven by extreme partisan ratios in fields like anthropology, leaves universities politically vulnerable and out of step with the broader public. He challenges the common view that this trend is due to self-selection, or the “pipeline problem,” suggesting instead that informal screening mechanisms discourage or exclude conservative scholars. Shell also argues that the grant system encourages conformity and limits academic freedom. More audaciously, he argues that some academics should be singled out by their peers, whether through their institution or professional organizations,t when they engage in politically motivated misrepresentation of their scholarship. Ultimately, Shell insists that academia's unique role in public life is to observe and understand the world, not to risk co-option as an arm of any political movement.

The vision of the future on offer from Donald Trump looks a lot like the past, when men were men, women stayed home, and just about everyone was less educated. To get a glimpse of what that future might look like we head to Indiana, one of the great ‘human capital anti-success stories of the 21st century,' according to our guest, economist Michael Hicks. Hicks makes the case that Indiana has pursued a series of disastrous policy choices over the past decade, including slashing spending on K-12 schools and higher education, expanding school choice (while cutting school spending), and preparing kids for the jobs of the past.
