Gresham College Lectures
Peacebuilding through the visual Arts - Jolyon Mitchell

Gresham College Lectures

How can the visual arts be used to promote peace? Professor Mitchell investigates how the visual arts can not only incite violence, but also bear witness, reveal dangerous memories, transform violence, contribute to healing trauma and imagine more hopeful futures. Examples are taken from both current conflicts (Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine) and past wars (Paul Nash and Otto Dix in the First World War, local artists in the Iran-Iraq War and the 1984 Rwandan genocide). Professor Mitchell analyses the ambivalent role of the visual arts in building peace. This lecture was recorded by professor Jolyon Mitchell on 11th February 2026 at Bernard's Inn Hall, LondonProfessor Jolyon Mitchell is Principal of St John's College, Durham and a Professor at Durham University who specialises in Religion, Violence and Peacebuilding, with reference to the arts and media. Educated at the Universities of Cambridge, Durham and Edinburgh, Professor Mitchell worked as a Producer and Journalist with BBC World service and Radio 4 before moving to the University of Edinburgh where he served as Director of CTPI (the Centre for Theology and Public Issues at the University of Edinburgh) and Academic Director for IASH (Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities). He is a former President of TRS-UK (2012-2018 - the national association for Theology and Religious Studies in the UK). He is author or editor of over a dozen books, as well as many chapters and articles, including Promoting Peace and Inciting Violence: The Role of Religion and Media (Routledge, 2012); Martyrdom: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2012); Religion and War: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2021), Religion and Peace (Wiley Blackwell, 2022), Picturing Peace: Photography, Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding (Bloomsbury, 2025) and Media Violence and Christian Ethics (CUP, 2007). He is currently finishing a book on A Passion for Performance: The mysterious resurgence of religious drama (OUP, 2027). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), an honorary fellow at the University of Edinburgh, and a life member of Clare Hall, at the University of Cambridge. Professor Mitchell has also served on international film juries at the Cannes, Berlin and Venice film festivals. He directs several projects on Peacebuilding, including one which led to a widely used co-edited volume on Peacebuilding and the Arts (Palgrave MacMillan, 2020). He has also worked with Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious leaders, as well as Palestinian and Israeli journalists, on a peace building project in Jerusalem and beyond. Send me a DM here (it doesn't let me respond), OR email me: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.comToday I'm honored to have back on the show once again: Podcast regular, United Church Minister turned whistleblower, Canadian Hero, humanitarian, loving father, published writer and author, public speaker and podcaster, documentary filmmaker, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, co-founder of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State, righteous soul, and Eagle Strong Voice: Kevin Annett Kevin's journey began in the quiet pursuit of faith and community service. Educated at the University of British Columbia and ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada, he initially sought to bridge divides in a fractured society. While serving as a pastor in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Kevin stumbled upon a nightmare concealed in plain sight: survivor testimonies revealing systematic abuse, torture, murder, and cultural genocide inflicted upon Indigenous children in church-run residential schools. These institutions, operated jointly by the Canadian government and churches including the United Church, Roman Catholic, and Anglican denominations, were sites of unimaginable cruelty - hiding the evidence of a deliberate campaign to erase Indigenous identities.Today, Kevin is coming on the show for a much-needed breath of fresh air conversation and moment of grounding. With all the heaviness of trauma and the joy of validation circulating the news, internet, and our hearts regarding the new Epstein revelations, emotions are high and many survivors and people are struggling with balancing both the gratitude and excitement of this information being seen by a majority audience and the destabilization of contending with actually being seen as a survivor as well as seeing all the horrors populate every social media feed and large account as if it were entertainment or a Hollywood movie. Kevin is going to spend some time grounding us -  talking about topics we can all get behind and need right now such as how to endure, what we can do now that the Epstein Files are out and this information can no longer be called ‘conspiracy', the act of forgiveness, and of course how to continue to have hope through it all. No one is better at giving hope than Kevin and my hope for all of you is that this episode will help you breathe easier and feel empowered and clear instead of exhausted and overstimulated.KEVIN'S PLAYLIST: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoojlrL9wVRN_v7TS1h-yVZ2VCmkT8ET6CONNECT WITH KEVIN: Email: angelfire101@protonmail.comPhone: 289-680-8724 Websites: -Republic of Kanata: https://republicofkanata.org/-Radio Free Kanata: https://bbsradio.com/radiofreekanata-'Murder by Decree' & other books published by Kevin: https://murderbydecree.com/#books -'Unrepentant' Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3YXK0F0a1YCONNECT WITH EMMA:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@imaginationpodcastofficialRumble: https://rumble.com/c/TheImaginationPodcastEMAIL: imagineabetterworld2020@gmail.com OR standbysurvivors@protonmail.comMy Substack: https://emmakatherine.substack.com/BUY ME A COFFEE: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/theimaginatiSupport the show

Rural students are unlikely to pursue degrees from private, selective schools. Why? And what happens to the handful of rural students who do attend elite colleges, colleges that may feel worlds away from home? Educated Out shows how geography shapes rural, first-generation students' access to college, their college experiences, and their postgraduation plans and opportunities. These students discover that home and college are very different worlds—and, over time, they start to question both. As they near graduation and navigate a job market in which the highest-paying and most prestigious opportunities are located in urban centers, they begin to feel the complicated burden of their schooling: they've been “educated out.”  In addition to advocating for a higher education landscape that truly includes rural students, Dr. Tieken critiques a system that requires people to leave their rural homes in search of opportunities. Without meaningful change, some students will have to make the impossible decision to leave home—and far more will remain there, undereducated and overlooked. Both engaging and accessible, Educated Out presents important and timely questions about rurality, identity, education, and inequality. Our guest is: Dr. Mara Casey Tieken, who is associate professor of education at Bates College. She is the author of Educated Out; and Why Rural Schools Matter. Bryan Kohberger studied crime for a living. Michael McKee allegedly studied his ex-wife's home for hours before he came back to kill her. Both believed preparation was protection. Both were wrong.Kohberger—the criminology doctoral student who pled guilty to the Idaho student murders—turned his phone off during the killings but created a traceable return route when it came back online. McKee allegedly achieved a 17-hour phone blackout by leaving his device at the hospital where he worked. On paper, that's smarter. In practice, police tracked his vehicle arriving in Columbus before the murders and leaving after. They found it in his workplace parking lot with fresh scrape marks where a sticker had been hastily removed. The pattern goes deeper. Kohberger's phone pinged near 1122 King Road 23 times in the months before the murders. All between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. He was watching. McKee allegedly made a reconnaissance trip to the Tepe home on December 6, 2025—24 days before the murders—spending hours on the property while the family was at the Big Ten Championship game. According to the affidavit, Monique Tepe left the game early, upset about something involving her ex-husband. She may have seen him on her security cameras. The indictment says McKee used a suppressor. That's why no one heard shots. But the ballistics matched anyway. NIBIN linked the gun found at his Chicago condo to casings at the scene. Intelligence creates arrogance. Arrogance creates blind spots. Two men. Two elite educations. Two alleged murder sprees months apart. Bryan Kohberger—criminology PhD, studied crime scene processing at the doctoral level—pled guilty to killing four Idaho students in November 2022. Michael McKee—vascular surgeon with more than a decade of surgical training—stands charged with murdering his ex-wife Monique Tepe and her husband Spencer in December 2025. The methods allegedly used in both cases reveal a chilling pattern. Both men allegedly turned off or abandoned their phones during the murder window. Both allegedly surveilled their targets beforehand—Kohberger's phone pinged near the victims' house 23 times over four months; McKee allegedly spent hours on the Tepe property during a reconnaissance visit while the family was out of town. Both allegedly used vehicles that became key evidence despite countermeasures. And both allegedly believed their intelligence made them exceptions to the rule. The indictment against McKee includes a six-year specification for using a firearm suppressor. A silencer. That's why no neighbors heard shots. That's why no one called 911 until Spencer didn't show up for work the next morning. If the allegations are true, this was equipment procurement for murder. Professional-grade planning for a deeply personal crime.Kohberger left DNA on a knife sheath. McKee allegedly left a ballistics match through NIBIN. The smartest thing either could have done was the one thing obsession wouldn't allow: nothing. Episode #475: “So many peoples in Myanmar who are fighting for democracy and human rights... they don't get any title or any recognize, but they did what they believed in.” Wut Hmone Win carries a legacy of resistance that began long before her. Her father, a student leader in the 1974 uprising involving U Thant's funeral, was imprisoned for his defiance of Ne Win's regime, and her family lived under surveillance. “The whole life of me and my family is [being] watched by the military,” she says. That experience taught her that freedom always has a cost. Educated in economics in Yangon and Norway, she had once hoped to live an ordinary life, free from politics. But when the 2021 coup struck Myanmar, the safety and democracy she enjoyed in Norway became unbearable reminders of what her people had lost. “I am living in Norway. I feel democracy and freedom and safety here, and human rights,” she says, with the understanding that all of this was lost completely back home. Within days she began organizing protests, helping to found the CRPH Support Group, Norway—a coalition of over twenty-one ethnic and religious organizations fighting for Myanmar's democracy from exile. As General Secretary, she oversees its humanitarian aid programs and international advocacy. “I do need money to support people who are suffering in Myanmar,” she says. “That's my simple strategy… we do need to support human rights… we do need [to be] shouting out loudly effectively.” Wut Hmone Win is critical of diaspora groups that remain confined to their own circles. “They are [remaining] in their own group, and that is a limited amount,” she says, emphasizing the need to reach Norwegians who “don't know about Myanmar.” Traveling beyond Oslo, she holds cultural events in towns like Lillehammer to “show our culture, dancing and then what happened in Myanmar.” For her, crossing those boundaries is how the revolution's voice can truly be heard. “We are standing here like a diaspora group in Norway,” she says. “We do need support, and we do need [recognition] too.”

Wisdom for pastors seeking to preach and lead well in a post-Christian age.So much of our culture judges events in isolation — a single moment, a single failure, a single decision — detached from what led to it and what flows from it. But history doesn't work like that. Events emerge from long trajectories, and they reshape the future in ways no one fully controls or intends. We're joined by Archie Poulos, Head of the Ministry Department at Moore Theological College, to reflect on Remaking the World: How 1776 Created the Post-Christian West by Andrew Wilson. Wilson's argument isn't that everything changed overnight in 1776, but that the events clustered around that year give us a window into the forces that have shaped the WEIRDER world we now inhabit — Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic, Ex-Christian and Romantic. We explore why reading history as an ecosystem rather than isolated episodes matters, why Romanticism isn't just a past movement but our present operating system, and how Christian faith — offers a deeper, more hopeful way to understand our moment. The Church Cohttp://www.thechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Anglican AidTo find out more about supporting Anglican Aid. The prosecution has surveillance footage. A ballistics match. An alleged suppressor. But if you're defending Michael McKee, the holes in this case are where you live. How did McKee allegedly enter the Tepe home with no forced entry? Prosecutors haven't explained it publicly. The aggravated burglary charge suggests they have a theory — but until they disclose it, that's a gap the defense can exploit. There's no disclosed motive. McKee and Monique divorced years ago. Police confirmed there were no prior reports from the Tepe address about McKee — no 911 calls, no restraining orders, no documented threats. No ongoing disputes. So why would a surgeon with everything to lose allegedly drive to Ohio and kill two people?Defense attorney Bob Motta analyzes the defense's options. McKee is a vascular surgeon. Intelligent. Educated. Trained in precision. The prosecution's theory requires him to allegedly commit premeditated murder, use a suppressor — and then keep the murder weapon in his own apartment. How does the defense reconcile that with the profile of a careful, calculating person?McKee "disappeared" in the months before the murders. Process servers couldn't find him. A colleague said he just vanished. The prosecution might call that consciousness of guilt. The defense might call it a man moving between jobs. Both Spencer and Monique were shot multiple times. Does the manner of the killings help or hurt the defense? Could they argue this looks more like rage than premeditation — even with the suppressor allegation? Motta breaks down the strategies available and what it would take for McKee to walk.#MichaelMcKee #MoniqueTepe #SpencerTepe #TepeMurders #BobMotta #HiddenKillers #DefenseStrategy #NoForcedEntry #ReasonableDoubt #CriminalDefenseJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? She reveals how this dynamic stifles independence, breeds guilt, and leaves adult children struggling with boundaries, self-trust, and autonomy, while also offering guidance on how to break the cycle and heal. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://drmargaretrutherford.com/when-a-parent-needs-too-much-what-is-enmeshment-and-how-does-it-hurt-a-child/ Quotes to ponder: "If the parent represses the girl's (or boy's) anger not just once but over and over again, a deeper injury occurs: the girl will eventually dismantle her anger response." "When the child reaches adulthood, they can be stricken by guilt for simply wanting and needing their own life." "Your task is to build your own sense of identity, while learning to share in healthy supportive relationships." Het boek is opgedeeld in blokken: Kill the ego Kill the expextations Start living your own life Introduction: Are you ready to be born for the third time? Finland - the land of quiet satisfaction. The art of accepting life (stoicism, Taoism, to Buddhism), while pursuing goals and projects you find valuable. Physical birth, cultural birth, and now the birth of an individual Identify goals and values that are truly your own (not from your partner, parents) Part I Kill the ego 1 Stop caring about your own happiness You are seeking happiness in the wrong places To attempt to maximize happiness ironically diminishes it Exclusive focus on your own happiness makes you selfish and lonely The tyranny of toxic positivity makes inevitable moments of unhappiness intolerable 2 Stop caring about what others think 3 Stop caring about how you feel Part II Kill the expectations 4 Stop Caring about your past 5 Stop caring about what happens in the world 6 Stop caring about your future success 7 Intermission: The centre of indifference The fact that nothing really matters can be highly liberating. p125 Nothing binds you. There is nothing you have to do to make your life worthy. There is no wrong way to spend a life. - Love it. Je hoeft dus ook niemand te veroordelen. Het verleden kunnen we niet veranderen. Jouw acties kunnen de toekomst veranderen. Dus kun je het beste concentreren op een betere toekomst te realiseren. - Meliora (beter) No single person can alter the course of an overwhelming issue like climate change. But by doing what we can to be a part of the solution, we remain active, energized, and purposeful. Frankl : What man actually needs is not tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal. Part III Start living your own life 8 Start caring about yourself 9 Start caring about others 10 Start caring about building a better world Conclusion: The delicate art of not caring while caring deeply Life is the best thing that has happened to you, but also the worst. p183 Accept the present and pursue a better future for yourself and for us all. Playful striving - het gaat niet om competitie maar wel om iets na te streven. Voor mensen die altijd bezig zijn met competitie wordt het leven een continu project. 187 Epicurus - Stoic  Mooi moto - Put in the work and dare greatly. Dare to enter the arena and leave your own mark (nalatenschap en goed leven) When you have found your direction, dare to follow it. You may succeed, you may fail. But even if you fail, you fail while daring greatly. (love it) It is a miracle that you exist p 192 In the end, there is nothing you have to do. Nothing you have to be. 1:00:05 Put in the work and dare greatly. Enter the arena and dare to leave your own mark. An eye-opening look at how all American workers, even the highly educated and experienced, are vulnerable to the stigma of unemployment. After receiving a PhD in mathematics from MIT, Larry spent three decades working at prestigious companies in the tech industry. Initially he was not worried when he lost his job as part of a large layoff, but the prolonged unemployment that followed decimated his finances and nearly ended his marriage. Larry's story is not an anomaly. The majority of American workers experience unemployment, and millions get trapped in devastating long-term unemployment, including experienced workers with advanced degrees from top universities. How is it possible for even highly successful careers to suddenly go off the rails? In The Stigma Trap: College-Educated, Experienced, and Long-Term Unemployed (Oxford UP, 2024), Ofer Sharone explains how the stigma of unemployment can render past educational and professional achievements irrelevant, and how it leaves all American workers vulnerable to becoming trapped in unemployment. Drawing on interviews with unemployed workers, job recruiters, and career coaches, Sharone brings to light the subtle ways that stigmatization prevents even the most educated and experienced workers from gaining middle-class jobs. Stigma also means that an American worker risks more than financial calamity from a protracted period of unemployment. One's closest relationships and sense of self are also on the line. Eye-opening and clearly written, The Stigma Trap is essential reading for anyone who has experienced unemployment, has a family member or friend who is unemployed, or who wants to understand the forces that underlie the anxiety-filled lives of contemporary American workers. The book offers a unique approach to supporting unemployed jobseekers. At a broader level it exposes the precarious condition of American workers and sparks a conversation about much-needed policies to assure that we are not all one layoff away from being trapped by stigma. The average person can keep a secret for forty-seven hours. Babs Walters held the worst kind of secret for nearly seventy years. Beginning at the age of eleven, Walters suffered childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her father. His edict, "Children should be seen and not heard," defined her childhood and groomed her to silence.  But despite the cycle of generational trauma and abuse that haunted her childhood, Walters eventually had a life-changing realization: We are not what happens to us. We are the meaning and purpose we give to what happens to us. As a domestic violence and sexual abuse survivor, Babs has devoted much of her adult life to raising understanding and awareness of the long-term effects of generational trauma, breaking the chain.     She holds a master's degree in counselling human relations and has spent thirteen years on a Harassment Investigation Committee. She was recently interviewed for Brave Voices® on the U.S. Library of Congress.    It took being a self-help junkie, 45 years of therapy, three marriages, and many mistakes to reach this point in her life. Babs' story will bring awareness and hope to many who are struggling with abuse and hopelessness.   XXXXX "Healing is not a destination - it's a journey  and it does not matter how long it takes" For fans of The Glass Castle and Educated, a child sex abuse survivor-turned-domestic violence advocate examines the full circle of generational trauma, resilience, and healing.   Babs Walters found that there are dark places that civilized people do not want to acknowledge. They would rather pretend it is a rare occurrence or that it does not happen in their family. Or they believe it is just too messy to get involved in. The child sexual assault statistics are high, although the majority of cases are not being reported.    Babs' father grew up doing what was done to him. We need to break the chain!   Connect with Babs Here Website Facebook
