This week, we are welcoming guest Nika Danilova, the musician, artist, and magic practitioner otherwise known as Zola Jesus, onto the podcast. Throughout the course of this interview, Nika and I explore the cathartic process of ritual expression which extends itself synonymously through art, music, and magic. Due to our shared political standing and love of Adorno, we also find space to weave in conversations on the importance of such an expression to combat the ill effects of a Capitalist culture which seeks only to consume. How might one use art as an antidote to a commodified world? What does it mean to be a Missionary for Nature? How does community storytelling re-enliven our engagement with the various ecologies of the world? What is there to gain through relinquishing control? All this and more, on today's episode of SaturnVox. To find out more on Nika, check out her bandcamp here, where you can listen to her albums as Zola Jesus and also purchase merch. You can also find her on twitter, instagram, and patreon. To find more on SaturnVox, check out their instagram and twitter @saturnvox, or, visit their website saturnvox.com. Nika Danilova began recording under the moniker Zola Jesus while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She drew textures from industrial music and harsh noise (alongside operatic vocals) to create a sound that shaped the cultural moment. It also helped define the popular indie label Sacred Bones. This year brings her sixth full-length album Arkhon. This conversation was previously recorded in June. Intro music from Ted Byrnes' Words Have Two Meanings (Foul Prey). Outro music - Lost (Sacred Bones).

This week, we welcome to the show, producer singer songwriter, Nika Danilova, aka Zola Jesus. Nika has released five albums over the last decade or so and in 2017 moved back onto family land in Wisconsin and built a cabin in the woods. She also played Dark Mofo down here in Tasmania last year so we have some overlaps or similarities that led to a really fruitful discussion about creativity and place in a post-materialist context. We also talk cities as habitats, structured and unstructured creation, and the role of visual presentation. Excellent stuff! Show Notes Nika's website, zolajesus.com. Zola Jesus on Twitter.
