Nika Nikolič je v literarni prostor vstopila z romanom Nekadilci brez otrok, kjer je že v naslovu priklicala nemogočo situacijo najemojemalcev; od njih lastniki stanovanj zahtevajo čim manj motenj, ki bi jih lahko prinesli neukrotljivi otroci, tudi čim manj sledi na inventarju, ki bi ga recimo pustil tobačni dim. V romanu sledimo zgodbi punce, ki s priložnostnimi deli zasluži preveč za podporo, a ne dovolj za preživetje. Hkrati je njena bivša cimra enostransko prekinila komunikacijo in se izmika, kar protagonistki jemlje mir, predvsem pa se zateka v notranji svet, v sanjarjenje, s katerim kompenzira občutek nemoči v vsakdanjem življenju. V lastnih sanjarijah je seveda bistveno bolj pogumna, spretna in uspešna kot v realnosti, pri popisovanju drsenja med svetovi pa je v pisavi Nike Nikolič opaziti, da je ukvarjanje s terapijami njeno poklicno področje in da se na vsakovrstne odklope od realnosti, pretežno nefunkcionalne, spozna. To je očitno tudi v romanu Zataknjeni v vezju. V njem obrobna in v bistvu anarhistična skupnost na meji urejenega in urbanega sveta, ki je dodobra reguliran in so pravila toga in nesprejemljiva, poskuša živeti avtonomno. Vodi jih spretna izdelovalka robotov za zabavo in prosti čas, nekakšnih idealnih spremljevalcev, ki jih potem čustveno in telesno nepotešeni klienti najemajo za zmenke. In podobno. Kot ena od strank najame robota tudi nekakšna inšpektorica, ki skrbi, da tisti z obrobja mesta ne bi kršili mestnih predpisov o tem, kaj roboti smejo početi in kakšno programsko opremo lahko vsebujejo; seveda je tudi to določeno, saj gre za družbo prihodnosti, ki je družba popolnega nadzora, patrulj nekakšni androidov, ki vdirajo v sisteme robotov in preverjajo njihovo ustreznost in zakonitost njihovega programiranja. Ob tej grožnji za anarhistično skupnost, ki se preživlja z izposojo in izdelavo robotov in so ji očitno na sledi, pa ji grozi tudi porušenje hierarhije v mafijskem podzemlju; skupina, ki je komuno ob plačilu varovala pred konkurenčnimi kriminalnimi in izsiljevalskimi tolpami, doživlja notranjo preobrazbo, stari vodja, ki je zagotavljal stabilnost, izgublja moč in se počasi umika, na vrh pa prihajajo novi ljudje. Avtorica v romanu zaostruje tendence sedanjosti, recimo totalni digitalni nadzor, regulacijo odnosov med roboti in programi in uporabniki. Hkrati nas postavlja na prizorišče, ki ga poznamo iz nekaterih distopij, v katerem je družbeno tkivo tako načeto, da prevladuje moč in večina slepo sledi nevidnim odločevalcem in njihovim zapovedim, ne da bi se spraševali o smiselnosti vsega skupaj. Tisti ki iščejo alternative in se naselijo v pravni in ostalih prazninah med skupnostmi, torej znanilci novega in uporniki, pa postopno izginjajo s prizorišča. Svet v romanu Zataknjeni v vezju je hipertehnološki. Stroji so že postali tako podobni ljudem, da jih je težko ločiti, predvsem pa je njihove odzive mogoče usmerjati z dodajanjem recimo empatije, humorja ali poželenja, seveda simuliranega in programiranega. Veliko prostora je namenjenega popisovanju različnih strojnih odzivov na spremenjene okoliščine delovanja, kar seveda vodi to pisavo v razsežnosti, kjer so čustva in osebnostne lastnosti zabrisane, nejasne, predvsem pa izginjajo. Hkrati ravno to poudarja vlogo nezavednih procesov, tudi pri tistih, ki še nismo v kibernetskih časih in tehnološko sproženem delovanju. Človek, kakor se zrcali v robotu, se tako kaže kot vsota nenadzorovanih reakcij in motivacij. Čustva kot nekaj v evoluciji pridobljenega so nepotrebna v hipu, ko jih lahko še bolj od originalov poustvarijo roboti. Hkrati pa ravno supertehnologizacija sveta malce potegne tudi na že preigrane viže iz distopičnega in znanstvenofantastičnega žanra, najprej kar na roman Mi Jevgenija Zamjatina izpred dobrega stoletja. Nika Nikolič se tako v romanu Zataknjeni v vezju navezuje na temelje znanstvene fantastike, pa tudi na obuditev in razcvet žanra, ki ga je v zadnji tretjini prejšnjega stoletja s potovanji v vesolje spodbudila realna možnost srečanja s tujimi, nezemeljskimi inteligencami, danes pa se napaja iz možnosti in pasti, ki jih v svet prinaša vse večja raba umetne inteligence.

To wrap up the series, we turn to another group that's routinely excluded from research meant to serve them: young people. VOICE — the Childhood Ethics Project — is co-led by a Youth Advocacy Council and university-based researchers. It started as a conventional academic collaboration and evolved into something more deliberate: a project that actively works to include youth not as subjects but as co-creators of knowledge. We talk with VOICE co-investigator and Canadian Journal of Public Health senior editor Mary Ellen Macdonald, Youth Advocacy Council chair and childhood ethics researcher Nika Rovensky, and recent McGill graduate and youth advocacy council leader Ryan Kent about the systemic barriers youth face when trying to contribute to research, what meaningful inclusion looks like in practice, and how a single rejected manuscript sparked a new editorial policy at a major public health journal. I'm Kay Daigle. Welcome to the Beyond Ordinary Women Podcast. Today, our guest is Nika Spaulding. Nika >> Hey, Kay. Kay >> Welcome, Nika. It's always so much fun to have you. And for those of you who know Nika, Nika has been on our podcast many times and so we're always thrilled when she has time to be with us. She has a masters of Theology from Dallas Seminary. She actually went to Oklahoma University, but we don't really care about that part. And she has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Northern Seminary. So she's Dr. Spaulding. But I will not call her that. I will call you Nika. Nika >> Thank you. Kay >> Nika is really sort of our go to person for hard questions and about teaching the Bible. And so today we are talking about teaching the Bible, and we're going to talk about using teaching aids in teaching the Bible. So Nika why do teachers need to use teaching aids? Nika >> Yeah, it's such a good question. And I don't know, Kay, if you've had like your philosophy of teaching develop on this. I would say for me, this is a more recent addition to how I teach the Bible, and that is—when I was a young teacher, I kind of wanted to teach all these cool, nifty things that maybe people didn't know on their own. And now I really, really just want to make the Bible stick. I want when people leave for them to remember what we talked about, for them to be able to meditate on it. And what I have found is, you know, you probably think back to your experience when you were in elementary, junior high, high school, and you think about lessons that really stuck. There's a chance that your teacher used some sort of teaching, some sort of illustration, or maybe they brought something in the classroom or something like that. I have discovered just over the years that using teaching aids, whether it's props or engaging the senses or something like that, really allows us to help the Bible stick and that's really the goal with the teaching aids. Kay >> Great. So what are what are some of the things that you do see things in the Bible that are teaching aids? Nika >> Yeah, no, absolutely. I think that's what's interesting about it is when you think about even let's say you want to teach wisdom, you go to the Book of Proverbs so often what you see from the Proverbs is they take stuff you already know, stuff from nature, stuff that you've experienced in life. And then they say, “Hey, this, this is what that's like.” So a perfect example is you might talk about honey is how the Word of God is. It's so sweet, right? And if you've ever tasted honey, especially pre modern food where we have sugar at our fingertips at all times, you kind of think about how like, am I? I'm sure in my pantry right now I can eat sugar, but in the ancient days, having that ability, honey, was a really sweet experience. So to compare that to the Bible, we see how the Bible also uses teaching as Jesus does. This in his parables all the time.

Nika Mlinarič Hribar je štiri dni na teden fizičarka. Kadarkoli, predvsem ko dežuje, pa je podjetnica. Ima izkušnje iz letalske industrije in obožuje namizne igre. Je soustanoviteljica SnowBoardGames, to je neodvisni studio za izdajanje družabnih iger, ki se osredotoča na vrhunsko ilustracijo, kakovostne komponente in koncept »več igre v manjši škatli«. Med drugim bo razkrila, kako ji fizikalni pogled na reševanje problemov pomaga v podjetništvu in kaj jo vrže s tira.Pogovori so nastali v okviru projekta WIN, katerega namen je izboljšanje zaposlovanja žensk v obrobnih industrijskih regijah v Podonavju. Skozi podkaste si s predstavitvijo osebnih zgodb žensk v Zasavju, prizadevamo povečati prepoznavnost, spodbujati globlje razumevanje potreb žensk in prepoznati institucionalne ovire. Želimo, da se glasovi žensk slišijo, njihove zgodbe slavijo in njihovi boji prepoznajo. Osebne pripovedi služijo kot močno orodje za ponazoritev resničnosti, upov in dosežkov žensk na trgu dela, za razbijanje stereotipov in za navdihovanje sprememb.
