Currently the Department of Conservation gives out permission after a process that includes filling out paper forms and supplying maps with trapping areas marked. In comparison, hunting permits can be obtained by completing an online form on the DoC website, and approval is almost automatic. After criticism from hunters, the permits to trap feral cats could be replaced by a similar online system. Victor Tindale, a hunter trying to tackle feral cats first-hand chats to Jesse. This week Nicola and Di chat with the incredible Mary Coustas. Mary is one of Australia’s most loved actors and comedians, best known for her character Effie Stephanides. She’s been performing and entertaining audiences for over 35 years, and became known as part of the groundbreaking stage show Wogs out of Work in the 80s, which led to the sitcom, Acropolis Now. Mary also has one of the most amazing personal stories of determination, persevering through 23 IVF attempts with her husband George, before finally giving birth to her daughter at the age of 49. Mary wrote about this in a beautifully honest book, All I Know, and her most recent book Mary Pause, is a funny physical memoir about menopause. In this episode, we chat to Mary about what it was like growing up as a Greek Australian in the 70s, and how she turned her cultural background, which had been a liability at school and the source of a lot of bullying, into an asset and created one of the most iconic characters on stage and screen in Australia, Effie Stephanides. Mary also shares about her incredible journey to motherhood, which took 23 IVF attempts, a miscarriage and a stillborn, before she finally got her miracle baby girl at the age of 49. This story is like nothing you’ve ever heard and Mary tells it with such openness and honesty - there were plenty of goosebumps and tears in the studio that day. The news this Fall that a population of Feral Hogs was confirmed in Montana, sent a shockwave through the ag industry. In a state that has been on high alert for feral swine outbreaks for several years, suddenly the word came that dozens of wild hogs were reported ranging in a brushy waterway along Montana’s Hi-Line. Feral swine are an invasive, non-native species, considered one of the worst invasive species in the world. They are prolific breeders, they are highly adaptable, and can cause devastating impacts. We know how damaging wild hogs have been in other states, including North Dakota. And we are aware of another population of wild hogs that is spreading to the north of us in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. But we thought Montana was still free of this menace. Where were they found in Montana? How many wild hogs are at that location? How did those hogs get there? How do we deal with them? Can they be eradicated? In this podcast Taylor Brown dives into those questions and a lot more with Montana State Veterinarian, Dr. Tahnee Szymanski, who activated the team at the Montana Department of Livestock, to respond to what might be the largest reported outbreak of Feral Swine in Montana’s history. Pigeons: The Great Communicators and Wartime Heroes — Steven Moss — Moss discusses the humble pigeon as a paradoxical feral bird species possessing extraordinary homing capabilities that made it invaluable as a communications mechanism. Although the famous narrative of Nathan Rothschild using pigeons following the Battle of Waterloo is apocryphal, pigeons were genuinely crucial wartime messengers. Moss emphasizes that pigeons were essential during the D-Day invasion due to radio silence protocols, and the celebrated pigeon Cher Ami saved imperiled soldiers during World War I. Moss notes that British forces even systematically killed Peregrine Falcons to protect pigeon communications, inadvertently contributing to the species' subsequent endangerment and near-extinction. 1869
