It's Sunday, and we're slowly approaching the last night of Monument 2026. Before the closing set, one of the more distinctive voices coming out of Japan's underground techno scene enters Varden. OCCA has spent more than twenty years building his sound and community in Sapporo and Tokyo. That sound is now travelling all over the world, and this night it will journey through the forest in Veggli. «I didn't plan my set in advance. Instead, I put a large selection of tracks I had in mind into a playlist. Once I arrived at the festival, I gradually shaped the set; enjoying the music, connecting with people, and taking in the nature and weather around me. I wanted to bring an energy that would feel powerful and danceable under the sunlight, while also incorporating something that would make people reflect on the time they had spent at the festival – as we moved towards the closing. I was unsure whether to play a track from a live recording featuring Suzanne Ciani performing with the Metropole Orkest, conducted by Simon Dobson. But when I saw how much the audience was yearning for the music, I felt confident enough to play it. I also can't forget the scene when the low end of Pearson Sound's “XLB (Allen Mock x Herbalistek Remix)” ran through the crowd like a tidal wave. When I left the booth, I was filled with joy and gratitude. What exactly is a feral human? The phrase conjures images of people living beyond civilization—hidden deep in forests, mountains and other wild places. But the reality behind the idea may be stranger, and far more complicated, than the legends. In this special episode of Dark Outdoors®, Chester Moore explores the concept of feral humans and expands the definition beyond the usual stories of mysterious wild people lurking beyond the edge of society. At the center of the episode is a bizarre account from Oklahoma involving a helicopter, thermal imaging and a human figure spotted moving through rugged country below. Who was this person? The U.S. Department of Agriculture is investing $35 million to help combat one of agriculture's most destructive invasive species. During today's episode of the AgNet News Hour, USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce discussed the department's newly announced Feral Swine Eradication Program, which will provide grant funding to help landowners and partners reduce wild hog populations that threaten farms, ranches and natural resources. Fordyce said feral swine are among the most damaging invasive species affecting U.S. agriculture. The animals destroy cropland, pasture, irrigation infrastructure and wildlife habitat while also posing a serious disease risk to livestock. "When we think about invasive species, they come in all different shapes and sizes," Fordyce said. "Honestly, the feral swine probably could be the most invasive and probably cause the most damage." The program, administered jointly by USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), will distribute $35 million in grant funding through qualified partners. Those organizations will work directly with landowners on education, trapping and other management practices designed to reduce feral swine populations. Fordyce emphasized that the program is designed to address both the economic and biological impacts of wild hogs. "They really don't care what landscape they're destroying," he said, noting that feral swine damage forests, cropland, grazing land and sensitive natural areas while also carrying diseases that could spread to domestic swine and other livestock. The discussion also highlighted California's growing feral swine problem. While states such as Texas, Arkansas and Missouri have some of the nation's largest populations, hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill noted that wild hogs have been reported across much of California and can cause extensive damage to farmland, orchards and rangeland. For producers experiencing feral swine damage, Fordyce encouraged them to begin by contacting their local NRCS office. "This is a pilot program," he said. "Contact NRCS if you have these critters around and you want to see about how to get rid of them." Applications from eligible partner organizations are due September 21, with NRCS and APHIS working together to evaluate proposals and distribute funding. Fordyce said the goal is to support organizations that already have the expertise to help landowners effectively trap and remove feral swine populations. As wild hog populations continue expanding across the country, Fordyce said the new initiative reflects USDA's commitment to protecting agricultural production while reducing the environmental and economic damage caused by one of the nation's most destructive invasive pests. The impact of the Columbian Exchange on Indigenous agriculture in the Americas was profound, complex, and often tragic—a story of innovation clashing with catastrophe, where new tools and resources arrived amid devastation that reshaped entire ways of life.Before 1492, Indigenous peoples across the Americas had developed sophisticated agricultural systems perfectly adapted to their diverse environments. In Mesoamerica, the "Three Sisters"—maize (corn), beans, and squash—formed a nutritionally balanced, sustainable complex that enriched soil naturally: corn provided stalks for beans to climb, beans fixed nitrogen, and squash shaded the ground to retain moisture and suppress weeds. This polyculture, supplemented by chili peppers, tomatoes, avocados, pumpkins, and more, supported dense populations in places like the Aztec heartland. In the Andes, the Inca engineered terraced fields and vast irrigation networks to cultivate potatoes, quinoa, and other hardy tubers at high altitudes. In North America, from the Eastern Woodlands to the Southwest, communities practiced companion planting, controlled burns for fertile clearings, and seasonal rotations that maintained biodiversity and soil health. These systems were ingenious, yielding high caloric output with minimal large-animal labor—llamas in the Andes carried loads but were not plow-pullers, and dogs were the primary domesticated companions elsewhere. Indigenous diets were often more varied and nutrient-rich than those of many contemporary Europeans, contributing to taller statures and robust health noted by early explorers.Then came the Exchange—Old World introductions flooded in with European settlers, conquerors, and enslaved Africans. Wheat, barley, rye, rice, oats, sugarcane, bananas, citrus fruits, peaches, olives, onions, and coffee took root in American soils. These crops reshaped landscapes: wheat thrived in temperate zones such as the future U.S. Midwest and the Argentine Pampas. At the same time, sugarcane spread across the Caribbean and Brazil, giving rise to plantation economies. But for Indigenous farmers, adoption was uneven and often forced. Some groups integrated useful additions—wheat-supplemented diets in certain regions and metal tools (plows, hoes) from Europe —that improved efficiency where survivors could access them.The most transformative changes came from animals. Horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, oxen, donkeys, and mules crossed the Atlantic starting with Columbus's second voyage in 1493. These changes opened new possibilities: horses enabled faster travel, expanded hunting ranges (especially for Plains peoples who adopted them to hunt buffalo more effectively), and shifted some groups from farming toward nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyles. Oxen and horses made plowing feasible for the first time in many areas, increasing field sizes and productivity. Cattle and pigs provided new sources of meat, hides, wool, and dairy—previously limited or absent. In some communities, these additions enhanced agriculture by offering draft power and protein diversity.Yet these "benefits" were overshadowed by destruction. Feral pigs and cattle trampled and devoured Indigenous crops, turning fertile fields into damaged grazing lands and sparking conflicts between herders and farmers that had rarely existed before. Goats and sheep overgrazed fragile soils, accelerating erosion in places like Mexico. Weeds and pests hitchhiked with Old World seeds, invading native fields. Most devastatingly, the demographic collapse from Old World diseases—smallpox, measles, influenza, typhus—decimated populations by 50–95% in many regions within a century. Entire villages vanished, leaving fields fallow and knowledge systems disrupted.
