Interview by Kris PetersThe incomparable CHELSEA WOLFE has announced her return to Australia and New Zealand in May 2025. Three years after her sold-out tour of Oceania, the Queen of Darkness will bring her visceral, vivid live performance back to Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington. She will tour with her four-piece band, as well as bringing along experimental Australian producer APHIR, performing as support for all shows.Wolfe will perform a career-spanning set on this tour, including songs from her new album She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, which was released in February. Her latest album is a rebirth in process. It is a powerfully cathartic statement about cutting ties, as well as an important reminder that healing is cyclical and circular, and not a simple linear process. Featuring elements of electronica, trip hop, industrial music and goth rock, the album has been hailed as one of her finest works. The record has been followed by two EPs containing reimaginings of the songs. Wolfe last performed in Australia in 2022 for Tasmania's Dark Mofo, along with a full national tour, her first in a decade. Her return in 2025 will mark 15 years since her debut The Grime and The Glow was released, sparking a career that has influenced and inspired a dedicated cult following worldwide to appreciate life in both its darkness and light.HEAVY spent some time with Chelsea ahead of the tour. We start by asking what has changed in her world since she was last out here in 2022."I feel like I've grown and changed as a person," she offered. "I've toured so much with these songs, I've learned so much from them. I learned so much from writing them, and I'm learning so much from playing them. They're very personal and also very universal. So it's like each night I notice a different lyric or something and kind of, you know, get present with that for a moment."In the full interview, Chelsea expressed excitement for her upcoming tour in Australia and New Zealand, where she will perform a mix of new songs and older favourites, while also discussing her growth as an artist and the connection she feels with her fan base. She reflected on her previous solo tour experience, the evolution of her music style from overproduced to lo-fi, and the integration of atmospheric elements in her live performances.Chelsea also highlighted her latest album, and the two remix EPs with acoustic versions, showcasing her artistic journey and the creative thought behind her stage setup and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Niall grew up in Belfast in the 90s when the bloody sectarian conflict between Protestants and Catholics still permeated almost every aspect of Northern Ireland society. His family didn't belong to either faction and never bought into the toxicity created by the historical sectarian biases. Living in such atmosphere, Niall always thought to get out, and in his early 20s moved across to Brighton in the UK. With a passion for music, the strong artistic community, Brighton was really appealing, but also expensive. That love of music and the arts would also be what eventually attracted him to come and live in Hobart, after a visit during Dark Mofo, which was part of a break to recover from burnout. Niall was eventually move to Hobart with his partner and get a job at the Museum of New and Old Art, before a recent career change. As the renowned band Batushka prepare for their final performance under this name in Melbourne, HEAVY had the chance to sit down with Monk Boruta and Bartek Krysiuk to explore the reasons behind the name change. Embarking on a new chapter, Batushka will be rebranding as Patriarkh, celebrating a new era with a groundbreaking concept album in January. Here's a glimpse into our conversation about their journey, the transformation of their music, and what fans can expect from their upcoming show."Why Australia for our last show?" Bart mused with a hint of humour. "It's actually a coincidence. We're also playing in New Zealand, and I joked that we're going to Mordor with the Batushka name. It's funny how it worked out!" This unexpected decision to end their journey as Batushka on Australian soil adds a unique layer to their farewell tour, thanks to a coincidence in touring logistics. With the name change comes a new artistic direction. When asked if their upcoming album would differ from their previous work, Krysiuk stated emphatically, "It's a completely different album. RASKOL was more closed, more conceptual. This new work demands your full attention. It's complicated, but that was our intention - to create something that requires engagement."The melding of Orthodox music with metal has generated considerable interest worldwide. Bart emphasised their uniqueness, saying, "We are something oriental in the whole world. Orthodox faith is not as commonly represented as Catholicism, and we are bringing something different to the table."The band bubbled with excitement over returning to our shores; "We're thrilled to return to Australia after our last performance at Dark Mofo," Bart shared. "It's a festival like no other, and we can't wait to see what happens. Maybe we'll burn something on stage!" Both musicians laughed at the thought, recalling their theatrical performances that blend music with ritualistic elements. One of the most intriguing aspects of their music is the use of Church Slavonic lyrics. "For me, it's not difficult," Bart explained. "I come from a region where this language is used. We also blend it with our regional dialect and other languages, creating a rich tapestry of sound and meaning." This commitment to authenticity deepens their connection to the cultural roots of their music. The new name, Patriarkh, reflects a shift in their narrative. Krysiuk described it as a "sarcastic nod" to their evolution. "Batushka represents a regular priest, while Patriarkh is a higher authoritative figure in the Orthodox Church. It signifies our growth and seriousness as artists."(anyone who has followed Batushka is aware of the departure of a founding member and the subsequent legal battle for the Batushka name and likeness.)When asked about the band's meaning in their lives, Monk Baruta articulated a blend of passion and pragmatism. "It's the biggest journey of my life. Touring the world and sharing our music is incredible, but it requires sacrifices - relationships, time, and mental strength." Bart echoed this sentiment, emphasising that music is their lifestyle and passion, and they are committed to it despite the challenges. As we wrapped up, both musicians had heartfelt words for their Australian fans: "We hope you come out to our last show. Bring your icons, and let's make it a memorable night!"Don't miss the chance to witness the last performance of Batushka in Melbourne on December 13 - an event that promises to be both a celebration and a profound farewell as they transition into Patriarkh, ready to unveil their new vision, cloaks and all!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Our Tuesday segment Australia Wide covers local events and useful community information from six cities across Australia . This week, Yukiko Burns from Hobart reports what's happening in Tasmania. Interview by Kris PetersWith a cross pollination of varying metal genres including sludge, death, gloom, black metal and hardcore, UK heavy outfit Conjurer are one of the few modern metal bands to walk that balancing tightrope of styles without imposing too much in any direction.Their willingness to experiment and push themselves outside of their usual comfort zones has seen the band traverse new sonic landscapes with each album, the most recent of which, 2022's Pathos, seeing the band expose their music to a wider global audience and open the musical minds of a whole new legion of fans. After visiting Tasmania as part of Dark Mofo that same year - and absolutely slaying it from all reports - Conjurer return to this side of the world for their debut tour of mainland Australia when they start a run of shows with Lo! and Botch in Brisbane from May 15.HEAVY sat down recently with singer/guitarist Brady Deeprose to find out more."We are coming on tour in Australia - which sounds insane to say out loud - (and) we're playing three headline shows and a couple of shows supporting Botch," Deeprose enthused. We ask if he is already packed and ready to go, still one month out from the tour."I moved house three days ago, so I'm not even unpacked at this point," he laughed. "Last time we were in Australia we were down for Dark Mofo in Tasmania and I spent four out of the five days sick as a dog in bed, so I'm ready to get back out and actually experience some of the country. It's one of those bucket list tours that you see bands go to Australia, and it never feels like it's going to be you. We're just so thankful to have the opportunity and to be getting back out there."We point out that it is a brutal run of five shows in five days and ask if he ever gets the feeling someone in their booking team doesn't like them."It's all of them, for sure," he laughed. "We're playing nine shows in ten days and then flying directly to Australia off the back of that, so we're like… I was saying to the guys I'm obviously really excited about this, but it's going to the most brutal month of touring we've ever done. We're gonna be absolutely shagged by the time we get there (laughs). We're so lucky to be able to do this. You get up, drink a couple of Red Bulls, and you make it happen. The shows are gonna be amazing."In the full interview, Brady talks more about the tour and what to expect, visiting a country on tour for the first time and how he prepares, Conjurer's influences and where they come from, knowing how much of each genre to mix through new music and how to tell if they go too far, their status as a 'non-specific' metal band in terms of genre, new music and more.

Sister Patience tells about the "Dark Mofo" festival in Tasmania that made the news, and Brother Benjamin goes down a google rabbit-hole reading about it. God doesn't embarrass easily, clearly. The overtly repetative and full-of-fill Mosiah 24:23 - "And now the Lord said unto Alma: Haste thee and get thou and this people out of this land, for the Lamanites have awakened and do pursue thee; therefore get thee out of this land, and I will stop the Lamanites in this valley that they come no further in pursuit of this people." Smitty could have just written, "God said, leave quickly, the Lamanites are now awake and pursuing you, but I will stop them in the valley." Interview by Kris PetersJapanese metal outfit Violent Magic Orchestra (VMO) are certainly a unique experience. Harmoniously integrating the genre of black metal music with techno, industrial, and noise in the form of an art-project, VMO can be best summed up as sounding like Black metal meets Kraftwerk.Violent Magic Orchestra combine numerous genres and sub-genres of music united together in a form of live-performances with the contribution from Kezzardrix - a maestro of live-visuals with strobe lights and smoke machines accompanying band's performance. They are a stunning visual band and a captivating live band and will make their way to Tasmania later this month to play at Dark Mofo.HEAVY caught up with one of the members Kei to find out more."Our music is very dark and a little bit happy," he explained. "VMO has many strange members, like Master Of Strange Dance. We have a lot of noise people who make noise and more beat and experimental space. We have a lot of hidden members. I think we are a strange collective who work a lot of other things. After releasing Death Rave I want to show who joined VMO." VMO will be releasing their new album Death Rave later this year, and we ask Kei if it will be what fans expect."We hope Death Rave... In our opinion Death Rave is huger music. Our concept is 2099, the end of the world. Now we live in 2023 and our music is a little bit experimental, but in 2099 our music is like pop music," he offered. "We connect future pop music and nowadays experimental music. We want to make the road to the future now using dance and mosh pit sounds."In the full interview Kei talks about playing at Dark Mofo, what to expect from a VMO show, their recent single Venom, new single Supergaze, a brief history of the band, the blending of sounds and where it comes from, more on Death Rave and more.

Seldom does a band as young to the metal scene garner as much attention and respect as British outfit Conjurer. With their debut album Mire in 2018, Conjurer bludgeoned their way into the souls of the metal family with a brilliant and pulsating slab of music that belied their fledgling status. Mire forced its way into an overwhelming majority of Album Of The Year lists assembled by critics from all corners of the globe and were universally touted as one of the metal world's most devastating, thrilling experiences.Fast forward a global pandemic and Conjurer have emerged with an album every bit as good as its predecessor and arguably better.Throwing out the newly framed handbook of genres and sub genres, Conjurer have buried Pathos under a maelstrom of devilish intent, funneling elements of sludge, death, doom, black metal and hardcore influences into a melting pot of constrained violence that reveals more layers with each listen.HEAVY caught up with Brady Deeprose (guitar, vocals) recently while the band was in Tasmania to play at the prestigious annual Dark Mofo event to talk about the album and the continued rise of Conjurer. "We've been sat on this record for so long,” he laughed. “Something that has really dawned on me in talking about this record a lot, is we wrote the majority of our last album Mire when we first started the band. We were gigging the songs for years before the record was even recorded so what we really found the benefit of with Pathos is we've been doing this band for 7 years now and we're finally getting to see the benefit of that experience. When we wrote most of Mire, Dan and I had played in some local bands - I'd done A tour - and we'd not really done anything. We didn't really know what we were doing. We had our influences - whether that be Gojira, Black Dahlia Murder and starting to get into Converge - but it was still my first death metal band. With Pathos it's seven years of touring and playing with much better bands than us and exploring our tastes and getting into the music. When this band started I didn't know any of the bands on the lineup for Dark Mofo this year, or half of the bands that we've toured with in the last couple of years. I just had no idea about the scene. I think Pathos is the sound of a band that is starting to mature and starting to find our feet and understand what we wanna do with music more. It's the first time we've pointed our nose in the direction of a particular scene. We definitely feel more at home in that Dark Mofo kind of realm than we do at the more mainstream stuff that we've played and I guess we're leaning into that a little bit more on this record than anything before."In the full interview, Brady talks about his first experience on this side of the world, the musical components of Pathos and how they fit, the intense subject matter and how it shapes the music, blending tradition metal genres successfully, finding the balance in the writing process, the possibility of returning to Australia and more.Pathos is out now via Nuclear Blast Records.

Dylan took a trip across the world and into the insanely near future again to touch base with Jason Higson of Australia's Yanomamo. A longtime supporter of the small but strong Australian underground music scene, Jason also runs Iommium Records, having just recently released a split with Slomatics. In addition to chatting about his label and band (including new outfit Soma), Jason elaborates on building a home studio, the metal/punk convergence, tangible merch for rabid tape collectors, Sunn O))) and Earth playing Dark Mofo, and a whole mess of Aussie bands. Speaking of which, you can check out a playlist we put together of those Australian bands on Spotify, including Jason's own Yanomamo, of course. A state memorial for Australian music's biggest legend has taken place in Melbourne, Myf and Zan were there and reflect on the epic night. The foot is staying on the pedal in the fight against sexism and sexual abuse, and we catch up on the conversations and head shaking reactions of the past week. Meanwhile the Dark Mofo festival has commissioned, then cancelled an offensive art commission, but is an apology enough? It's the 20th anniversary of that time Björk wore a swan on the red carpet, and while we're at it we look at other 2000s fashion moments that hint they're making a comeback. And Myf bangs on about something you maybe shouldn't watch, while Zan is rivalling the paddle steamers week, with her hot tip. Warren Ellis' music has been the soundtrack to my adult life. I remember when I first heard Dirty Three, they were like nothing else around; an instrumental band with a violinist who played like Hendrix, and epic songs that tore at the very fibre of your being. I listened to their albums and like many others put my own meaning into those wordless songs. In the mid 90's we started seeing him more in the Bad Seeds. He found a friend and collaborator in Nick Cave, they would form Grinderman together and compose beautiful soundtracks for film and television. Warren Ellis doesn't sit still. He also rarely looks back.. for him, creative life is about propelling forward, solving the mystery of song that awaits in his next project. When Dirty Three announced they'd be performing their debut album in full, I knew I wanted Waz to Take 5. He's always been the most entertaining part of Nick Cave doco's, and his fiery spirit on stage is magnetic; I wanted to get close to that, see what made him tick. What I witnessed, was an entirely different Warren Ellis. In a pin drop quiet room, he took us from his childhood in Ballarat, to the streets of Europe, finding his voice in Melbourne and then leaving it all behind to become the man he is today. Songs in the key of Waz. From the maestro himself. John Ellis - ‘Mis'ry is my Middle Name' Johnny Cash - ‘Orange Blossom Special' Beethoven - ‘Symphony 7 slow movement number 2 Allegretto' Arleta - ‘Mia Fora Thymamai (I Remember a Time)' Alice Coltrane / John Coltrane – ‘The Sun'
There are times when I like to take the Take 5 on the road; heading to places where creative people gather, and the conversations around art and music are part and parcel of daily life. Dark Mofo in Hobart is one of those places. A festival set in the middle of winter, in the southernmost city in Australia. When the wind blows, it's coming from Antarctica. The streets light up with red crosses each night to signal some sort of curiosity you should explore within, there are open fires and pagan feasts, and there is music; curated in such a beautiful way it feels like a movement, like a moment. This is the place I met Kelsey Lu. Lu grew up in North Carolina, and was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. Early on, she found the cello, and connected deeply with the strings. She followed her heart, left home, and broke bonds with her family as she headed to New York City to follow her musical dreams. Through her 20's Kelsey Lu found her voice, she collaborated with Solange, and Sampha, she experienced heartache and pain, and she headed west to heal, and begin again. Across five beautiful choices, Lu shared her songs of hope. All women, all powerful, and all tied to the human and artist she has become. Settle in for a beautiful conversation, with Kelsey Lu. Alice Coltrane – 'Journey in Satchidananda' Billie Holiday – 'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do' Des'ree – 'You Gotta Be' Lafawndah – 'Substancia' Chaka Khan – 'I'm Every Woman'
