Brave Boundaries For New Paralegals

Paralegals on Fire! with Ann Pearson

Episode Summary: In this episode of the Paralegal Coach Podcast, Ann Pearson continues the Paralegal Survival Toolkit series by addressing one of the most common and quietest causes of burnout for new paralegals: saying yes to everything because you think you have to. Ann explains how the desire to prove yourself, avoid disappointment, and appear capable often leads paralegals to overcommit, work unnecessary late nights, and sacrifice both accuracy and personal well-being. Through a candid story from her early career, she illustrates how failing to pause and clarify deadlines resulted in missed personal moments, avoidable mistakes, and work that wasn't even truly urgent. Key Takeaways: Saying yes to everything leads to burnout: Overcommitting out of fear or guilt results in rushed work, mistakes, exhaustion, and missed personal priorities - without actually increasing your value. Review your current commitments honestly: Before accepting new work, consider what you're already responsible for, what requires more time than expected, and whether the new task should take priority over existing deadlines. Communicating bandwidth builds trust: Voicing your workload professionally doesn't make you look weak. It makes you appear organized, reliable, and strategic. Boundaries don't mean saying no: Effective boundaries often sound like deadline clarification, timeline adjustments, or offering partial solutions — not outright refusal. Intentional yeses make you indispensable: Saying yes thoughtfully - to work you can complete well, on realistic timelines - is what truly builds credibility and long-term career success.   Get more free paralegal resources: https://paralegal-bootcamp.com/paralegal-resources For all of our paralegal podcast episodes: https://paralegal-bootcamp.com/

We welcome Cam Clarke for a fascinating deep dive into one of the most successful musical dynasties in American entertainment: The King Family. Cam takes us behind the scenes with the legendary singing group, and then Cam, a talented voice actor goes is and out of famous roles as we 'interview' some of his most beloved V.O. characters!Cam is the son of Alyce King, one of the original King Sisters, whose harmonies launched in the early 1930s and eventually grew into a multi-generational act that included children, grandchildren, cousins, and extended family, all uniting in song and populating iconic ABC series and specials throughout the 1960s. Cam walks us through the group's vaudeville roots, and their early days singing on the radio, all beginning on a Christmas morning where Cam's Mom, Aunts and Uncles each received a musical instrument and instructions from their music teacher Dad. His goal was to build a family band. He created a dynasty. We explore how The King Family evolved and rebranded across decades: From a Big Band vocal group in the 40's to jazz harmonies and the 50's blonde Hollywood glam look, to the TV friendly family ensemble of the 60s and 70s.Cam shares inside stories about how costumes were passed down from one child to the next and how King Sisters, King Kiddies, and King Cousins all fit into the ever-growing and evolving act.We also discuss Now They're All Here, Cam's large and glorious coffee table book on the King Family, inspired by George Plimpton's oral biography of Truman Capote, and written in the first person voices of King Family members over the past 100 years. And Cam speaks candidly about his own sexual orientation, sharing how he came out to his entire family at a typical family meal, as the conversation and the timing felt right. His truth was completely accepted.Plus, Jamie Alcroft, who will hold a position of honor on the non profit One Legacy Tournament of Roses Parade float on New Year's Day, joins us to talk about his important work with the LAFF4LIFE program and his experience as an organ transplant recipient! In current media --Weezy: Simon Cowell: The Next Act on NetflixFritz: The movie F1, streaming on Apple TV+Path Points of Interest:Cam ClarkeNow They're All Here: The King Family by Cam ClarkeCam Clarke on WikipediaCam Clarke on IMDBCam Clarke on InstagramThe King Family on WikipediaDonate LifeOne LegacySimon Cowell: The Next ActF1 on Apple TV

Goals DO Come True with Doug Bennett

Doug is joined by Holly Budge, one of the UK's most accomplished female adventurers. From becoming a professional skydiver to being the first woman to skydive Mount Everest, racing horses across Mongolia and summiting Everest, Holly shares how setting audacious goals transformed her life. But her most meaningful adventure came when she founded "How Many Elephants," working with female anti-poaching rangers in Africa. Holly's enthusiasm for setting and achieving seemingly impossible goals will leave you inspired to voice your own audacious dreams and step outside your comfort zone. KEY TAKEAWAYS At 21, Holly set an audacious goal to become a professional skydiving camera woman despite having no experience in skydiving or filming. By saving money, learning the skills, and persisting despite gender barriers, she achieved this goal, setting a foundation of self-confidence that influenced her future adventures. Holly's experience becoming the first woman to skydive Everest taught her the power of intention setting and perseverance in securing sponsorships. Despite not having £24,000 for the expedition, she said "yes" first and then found sponsors to fund her vision, demonstrating how commitment precedes resources. When faced with unexpected challenges during her adventures, like being caught in a storm on Everest or losing horses in Mongolia, Holly learned to make critical decisions independently. Holly transformed from wanting selfish indulgences in adventure to creating adventure with purpose by founding "How Many Elephants" and "World Female Ranger Week," using her platform to raise funds and awareness for conservation causes that received 500 million views. Her work with female anti-poaching rangers in Africa represents her most meaningful adventure because it combines real danger with genuine purpose beyond personal achievement. Despite feeling like an imposter during her master's degree, Holly earned the highest mark ever given because she discovered something she was truly passionate about. Having supportive parents who didn't push her but encouraged her to follow her interests allowed Holly to develop a natural drive and confidence to pursue unconventional goals, from competing in sports to skydiving professionally. Holly's golden nugget for goal-setting is to "Say it out loud and watch what happens." Voicing your goals to others gives them momentum, creates accountability, and transforms them from thoughts to actions—pushing you beyond your comfort zone where true growth happens. BEST MOMENTS "This 60 seconds of sheer terror completely changed the course of my life. I loved it and I wanted to go back up and do it again straight away. But nobody had told me that people were getting paid to jump out of perfectly good airplanes every day of the year." "I call this hanging onto my 21-year-old mindset, and now I'm 46 and I've kept trying to keep this mindset going over the last two and a half decades, and that's taken me on some pretty incredible sponsored adventures around the world." "These days, for me, it's all about adventure with purpose. I use adventure as a platform to raise funds and raise global media attention for a greater good than me jumping out of an airplane or me climbing a mountain." "Conservation without funding is just conversation. So it's about getting the money to the right places without the middleman." "When you've got your big audacious goal, say it out loud and watch what happens. The minute you voice it and you start chatting to people about it, it suddenly grows arms and legs, but in a really good way." Lake is insanely smart and talented and I really admire her so much. She has taken what she learned from her daughter about epilepsy and turned it into a beautiful book called All About Brains. I loved hearing her talk about the book and how it's designed to help kids across the neurodiversity spectrum feel like they have language to talk about their experience. Lake's also a fabulous actor and you may have seen her as Dr. Graham in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dr. Cat Black on Children's Hospital (Jeph's Favorite) or in ...In A World, which she also wrote and directed. Stick around for the Hindsight after the interview, where Jeph and I talk about some upcoming convention dates and respond to Fan Questions from the Mail Sack! Voicing Animations with Kate HarbourThis month Rob and Helen Bee are joined by the legendary Kate Harbour – a voice actor with more iconic credits than you can shake a script at.You've heard her in Bob the Builder, Shaun the Sheep, Timmy Time, Octonauts, The Secret Show, Chip and Potato, Go! Go! Cory Carson… Honestly, the list goes on, and if we tried to name everything, we'd be here all day. She's also a master of radio drama (Doctor Who, Robin of Sherwood), comedy (Puckoon, The Big Ben Theory), and Netflix dubs – basically, if you've ever watched TV, you've probably heard Kate. But she's not just a voiceover powerhouse – she also teaches. Her Acting for Animation workshops have helped countless VOs bring characters to life, whether at top drama schools or in her own private coaching sessions. So, of course, we had to sit her down and grill her on everything: How did she get into animation? How does she build her characters? What makes a great animation performance? And crucially, how does her approach to teaching differ from everyone else's?It's a properly juicy episode, full of insights, laughs, and a fair bit of geeking out over characters. The mental load of motherhood is heavy, and I am always on the lookout for ways to lighten it.  Can you relate?  A surprising discovery I've made throughout the years is how dramatic a difference knowing and voicing our values can make in lightening our mental load as moms. When we know ourselves well enough to know our core values, we are able to decrease stress and pressure and build up the structure and support that we need.  Knowing our core values is key to avoiding mom burnout!  I was really grateful to have the opportunity to discuss this at the Happy Mom Summit with JoAnn Crohn. In the interview, I discussed 3 ways knowing our values can help lighten our mental load, and I'm so excited to share them with you today. I absolutely loved being part of the Happy Mom Summit.
