The teaching of the Trikaya, or Three Bodies of Buddha, is challenging. It may seem to be metaphysical speculation or surprisingly theistic for Buddhism. However, it offers a unique and valuable framing for the mystery of awakening, the palpable presence of the Ineffable despite its ungraspable nature, and the relationship of all phenomena to the Ineffable.

Trying to keep career momentum as a mom of young kids can be really tough. On top of all the demands of being a parent, wife, and daughter, going hard at the office can start to feel like a slog. Moreover, being a parent and approaching middle life can surface a lot of questions about your priorities and your choices, including about work. And of course, all your baggage from being a women, Asian-American, child of immigrants is still showing up at the office and not helping you get to the next level in your career. We discuss these issues and more with Minal Mehta, the founder of the executive coaching firm The Ineffable Leader. Educated at Stanford and HBS, Minal worked as a product leader across several leading tech companies such as Google, Amazon, LinkedIn and others. She was born and raised in India and Singapore and is a mother of two tweens in the Bay Area. In her words, Minal's mission is "to empower leaders who've achieved external success from a place of exhaustion and burnout to achieve even greater success from a place of flow."

Victorious Roman soldiers sacrificed the weapons of their conquered enemies to Lua, which is the only thing known about her as a cult figure. However she has many connections--to both Saturn and Mars, to the goddess Ops and her consort Consus, to the goddess Angerona, and a little known Roman deity called Robigus. We look at these connections, the idea of Saturn as the "Black Sun" and the "Star of the Sun", and the Electric Universe Theory.
In this episode of Spiritual Unraveling, hosts Ashley and Nate delve into the concept of ineffability in spirituality, exploring the challenges of understanding enlightenment and the role of the mind in meditation. They discuss the importance of surrendering to silence, the influence of the ego, and the journey of trust in connecting to a greater frequency of existence. Through personal experiences and insights, they highlight the transformative power of meditation and the necessity of allowing oneself to be present in the moment.
The tenth Field of Zen is Connecting with the Ineffable. Zen is not based on a belief in God in a theistic sense. However, at its core there is a strong emphasis on a much more profound, inspiring, significant, and hopeful Reality than the bleak, mundane, and discouraging one people sometimes experience in their ordinary daily lives. Call this “greater reality” anything you like – God, the Divine, That Which is Greater, Other Power, the Ineffable, the Great Mystery, the Great Matter of Life and Death – but you have tasted it at peak moments of your life. Zen encourages you to explore and deepen your relationship with the Great Matter.

Abby and Patrick are joined by philosopher Simon Critchley to discuss his new book, On Mysticism: The Experience of Ecstasy. They discuss how, for Critchley, mysticism represents "a way of thinking about existential ecstasy that is outside and more than the conscious self.” Exploring the book's survey of key figures and texts in the Western Christian tradition, the three unpack how accounts of mystical experiences can challenge our assumptions about the past, defy traditional philosophical ideas of subjectivity, and suggest new ways of thinking about the conditions of everyday life in the present, all with rich psychoanalytic implications. Their conversation ranges from the cognitive and affective dimensions of mystical experience to mystical accounts of embodiment, gender, and erotic jouissance to the biographies and autobiographies of mystics, and more. Plus: what it might have been like to travel with the constantly weeping Margery Kempe, Meister Eckhart's inspired defense against charges of heresy, the ecstatic pleasures of your favorite playlist, and why absolutely everyone should read the Song of Songs. On Mysticism: The Experience of Ecstasy is available here: https://www.nyrb.com/products/mysticismA pre-order link for Simon's forthcoming Your Life is Not a (Fucking) Story is available here: https://everyday-analysis.sellfy.store/p/your-life-is-not-a-story-by-simon-critchley/Have you noticed that Freud is back? ypsi experimental space was started by accident on January 1st, 2016, at the site of a former drugstore turned black box theater (8 N Washington Street) and ended by eminent domain on January 1st, 2023. While it remains a mystery as to why "yes" came into existence and little is known about the perpetrators who were said to have started this madcap venture, the main premise was ostensibly to cause some creative mayhem from time to time. Besides the playing of ping-pong, slideshow karaoke, and showing of films, there were reportedly evenings consisting entirely of experimental poetry, music, politics, theater, and a broad range of impromptu performances and exhibitions that still defy description. Occasionally, "yes" was even turned into "8," an intimate experimental dinner theater, where 8 delicious courses were paired with outrageous provocations by creative miscreants. While the "yes" itself no longer exists, the creative spirit lives on in the lives of all who entered its hallowed portal. Apocalypse now? This week, V and Emily start out the episode by talking about the super-cool annual convention that Good Omens fans created and host as part of The Ineffable Society: the Ineffable Con, going strong since 2019. Then, we have to delve into the allegations against Good Omens co-author and showrunner Neil Gaiman, former Tumblr everyman and (alleged) total sleazebag. Looking at the Gaiman situation through the lens of, "how are fans reacting, and how are fans treating each other's reactions?" makes us feel a little better than looking too deeply at him as a person. The episode closes out with a reminder that the fannish world moves fast -- when we put this on our calendar, it was supposed to just be a happy episode about awesome Good Omens fans, you know? Sigh. Today, we are honored to be joined by Hamilton Souther, a Master and visionary who has dedicated over two decades of his life to unlocking the mysteries of consciousness through plant medicine. Trained under the legendary Julio Llerena Pinedo in the depths of the Amazon, Hamilton became the first Westerner to be recognized as a Maestro Medico Vegetalista—a title that signifies unparalleled mastery in Amazonian plant medicine. What sets Hamilton apart is not just his depth of experience—having led over 3,000 plant medicine ceremonies and guided more than 15,000 people through profound, life-altering journeys—but also his ability to bridge worlds. He has brought the sacred knowledge of shamanism to the global stage, mentoring high-profile leaders, CEOs, and creatives, helping them tap into their personal power and transcend the limitations of conventional success.Hamilton is more than a healer; he is a pioneer. In 2004, the New York Times recognized his groundbreaking work with Ayahuasca, opening the door for the Western world to engage with this powerful tradition. He has since founded the Blue Morpho Academy, training a new generation of sitters, facilitators, and master healers to carry this lineage forward with safety, professionalism, and integrity. His think tank explores the intersection of technology and consciousness, and his ventures like Gaia Labs and LiquidEarth push the boundaries of what's possible in both the digital and spiritual realms.Hamilton's journey is one of courage, innovation, and deep service. He stands as a testament to what is possible when we integrate the wisdom of ancient traditions with the complexities of modern life. Today, we'll delve into the very heart of his work—exploring not just the power of plant medicine but the deeper philosophical and spiritual questions that arise when we begin to unlock the full potential of the human spirit.Hamilton, it's a profound honor to have you here. The role of the artist in the climate crisis is not simply to communicate scientific information in a sort of dressed up kind of way, but really to engage the imagination to do that thing that only art can do, which is getting at these almost imperceptible shifts in identity, in purpose and meaning, and the way that we as humans think about our relationship with the natural world and our place in it. It's ineffable, that kind of shift. If that's not the role of art, I don't know what is. Judi Pearl has been a passionate environmentalist since her early teens here in Ottawa, unceded Algonquin-Anishinaabe lands. In addition to her long-standing role with the English Theatre Department at the National Arts Centre, Judi formerly served on the boards of The Only Animal theatre company and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres also known as PACT.Judi is also a co-founder, along with myself, Anjali Appadurai, Robin Sokoloski, David Maggs, Kendra Fanconi and Anthony Garoufalis-Auger of SCALE (Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency), a non-profit network of artists, cultural practitioners, and arts organisations committed to addressing the climate emergency. This organization was founded in 2021, where Judi was also the Operations Lead until 2023. You can learn about SCALE by listening to its current leader of SCALE, Annette Hegel, in e176 art as a tactic. At the NAC, Judi has produced large-scale projects such as Grand Acts of Theatre, Stages of Transformation, the NAC Hip Hop Theatre Festival, the annual ceremony for the Siminovitch Prize (2016-2020) as well as Family Day (2011-2015), among many others. She was also the recipient of the CEO's Award of Excellence in 2020. Well deserved, I'm sure. My first conversation with Judi (e59 pearl – positive tipping points) took place during a walk in the park here in Ottawa where we talked about theatre, the climate emergency, collaboration, arts leadership, the intersection of arts and sustainability and elusive positive tipping points. I invite you to listen back to that episode:SCALE is really trying to become that gathering place that will engender that high level collaboration, which hopefully will create those positive tipping points.Fast forward 3 years later and Judi has a new title at NAC English Theatre ‘Associate Producer, Artistic Programming and Environmental Projects', which points to her long standing leadership role on environmental issues at the NAC and in the arts sector in general. Judi's work these days has an increased focus on artistic programming such as the Irresistible Neighbourhoods, a multi-year play development project centered on themes of climate and sustainability, which nurtures both emerging and established playwrights to imagine alternative visions for the neighbourhoods they call home and I invite you to go all the way back to the second episode of this season, e155, where you can hear Sanita Fejzić talk about her Irresistible Neighbourhoods radio play Machines and Moss. When I first Sanita's play I was blown away. I loved it. Irresistible NeighbourhoodsIt was good to reconnect with Judi, the theatre producer and climate activist. I've always appreciated Judi's insights on art and climate emergency policy as well as her moral clarity, for example : What we hear is extremism on both sides, even though those extremist views are often, I think, a minority, and yet those are the voices we hear the most that get the most attention and then because of the way social media works or the media in general works, that extremism tends to beget more extremism, hence polarization just gets worse and worse. I really hope that the arts and artists can be a force to counter that trend.Judi also observes that the arts are well placed to address these wounds :I think it's vitally important that artists hone, cultivate and maintain an ability to dialogue and listen and reach people who think differently. And I think we should be grateful to Judi and her peers for working so hard to help set up SCALE and similar organizations that place the arts at the centre of the complex challenges that we face and thereby increasing their relevance. Judi's recommended readings are : Not the End of the World : How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet by Hannah RitchieFix the News by Angus HerveyNote: This document was referred to during this conversation : Walking Gently on the Land (National Arts Centre Environmental Sustainability Action Plan 2023-2026)*Sections of the episode (generated by AI and reviewed by Claude Schryer)Reconnecting with Judi PearlJudi Pearl returns to the conscient podcast, reminiscing about past conversations and her journey in the arts. The discussion sets the stage for exploring her current role at the National Arts Centre and her commitment to environmental issues.Judi's Journey in the ArtsJudi shares her background as a theatre artist, highlighting her evolution from stage manager to associate producer at the National Arts Centre. She emphasizes her deep connection to Ottawa and her work in a large institution. The NAC's Environmental CommitmentThe conversation shifts to the National Arts Centre's environmental policies, including their new strategic plan and sustainability action plan. Judi discusses the importance of setting targets for waste, energy, and artistic programming.Creative Green Tools and Climate AwarenessJudi and Claude elaborate on the Creative Green Tools in Canada and their relevance to measuring the environmental impact of the arts. Judi highlights the importance of raising awareness and establishing baselines for carbon footprints within institutions.Irresistible Neighbourhoods: A New Artistic InitiativeThe focus shifts to Judi's artistic work at the NAC, particularly the ‘Irresistible Neighbourhoods' project. She explains how this initiative aims to explore neighbourhoods through a climate lens, involving emerging playwrights in the creative process. The Role of Climate DramaturgyJudi discusses the innovative concept of climate dramaturgy, introduced by Vicki Stroich, and its significance in shaping narratives around environmental issues. This approach encourages playwrights to imagine futures for their neighbourhoods beyond dystopian themes.Integrating Music and TheatreAs the conversation continues, Judi shares insights on the integration of music and theatre in the second volume of ‘Irresistible Neighbourhoods.' She highlights the collaborative process between composers and playwrights to create a unified artistic vision.Art's Potential for Cultural ShiftJudi reflects on the power of art to influence societal attitudes and values, drawing parallels with historical movements. She argues that cultural shifts are essential for driving political and economic change, particularly in the context of climate action.Facing the Future: The Role of ArtsAs we confront the uncertainties of the future, the conversation shifts to how the arts can play a pivotal role in addressing societal challenges. The discussion highlights the potential for the arts to foster resilience and adaptation in communities facing resource scarcity and climate change.Bridging Divides: The Power of DialogueThe dialogue emphasizes the importance of engaging with differing perspectives in an increasingly polarized world. Artists are encouraged to cultivate the ability to listen and connect with those who hold contrasting views, fostering a more inclusive discourse.Navigating Modernity: A Call for OpennessThe conversation delves into the complexities of modernity and the need for new visions as societal structures evolve. The speakers advocate for open dialogue and collaboration to address pressing issues, highlighting the potential of community-engaged arts.Finding Hope Amidst ChallengesAs the discussion turns to the media's portrayal of current events, the speakers reflect on the necessity of sharing positive stories that inspire action and change. They recommend resources that highlight impactful initiatives and encourage a more balanced view of the world's progress.Joy in the Everyday: Celebrating Small WinsJudi shares personal moments of joy and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of recognizing positive aspects in life amidst challenges. They reflect on the significance of community and the arts in fostering connection and hope. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). She's currently an animal technician for a laboratory in Salt lake city Utah, and in her second year of a degree in Animal health and behavior. Animals have always been Ravens drive, but when posed with the question “Who are you?” The answer has always been the same; "I am a writer". First she published a short story, a science fiction book called ‘Ineffable', when Raven was 18, and before then she'd spent years scribbling stories into school notebooks, and entertaining family with whimsical tales of fantastical lands, aliens, and adventures. Finally, after years of tireless work, she finished ‘Nothing is beautiful', her magnum opus. The recent audio book rendition of this amazing novel, is narrated by the talented Jack de Golia who has brought new life to the story, and Raven is so excited to share it with you all. 'Nothing is Beautiful' - Life is hard for Sharkey and the other scrappers in Lawrence. After the Great Oil Crisis the Earth became a hot, wild, dangerous place. Those that could reach the portals left the planet long ago. Those left behind live a desperate and brutal existence, surviving on the bones of a ruined civilization, fighting and killing each other in a world taken back by the earth. But Sharkey has hope. Can he and his band of followers make it through the Nothing alive? And if they do, will they find the salvation they are looking for?Nothing is Beautiful is a post apocalyptic western sci fi story of love and friendship, terror and loss, and fierce determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. You will not soon forget this compelling and original book.Raven's Links - https://www.audible.com/author/Raven-Harris-Keim/B07GR3Q94Zhttps://www.amazon.com/stores/Ray-Harris-Keim/author/B0Support the Show. This is a shareable podcast, with a group of creatives, documenting their creative voice over & on-camera journeys to inspire all of us as we navigate our own paths! All great spiritual lineages point us back to that which defies concept and language. Authentic practitioners describe awakening as being touched by a sense of awe, overcome by the beauty, fierceness and power of being. To be in AWE is a natural human experience. Ironically, so is the discomfort that leaves us restless with the experience, making it almost impossible to bear. Our inability to bear the ineffable gives rise to dualism and our conflict with faith.
One of my favorite things about the Tantrik tradition is how vast it is. On one hand, you have the most refined non-dual philosophy wedded to aesthetically heightened and exceedingly subtle systems of practice for the attainment of the highest liberation in life. And on the other hand, you have midnight ghastly rituals in cremation grounds to hex your enemies, take control of spirits, amass wealth and get people to fall in love with you…Such range! And my favorite thing about Tantra?: as Swami Vivekananda so boldly declared before a western audience in 1893, we regard the “highest absolutism as well as the lowest fetishism as both equally valid attempts at grasping the Ineffable.” My favorite thing is how very inclusive and accepting our tradition is to every form of spiritual practice from the so called “lowest” to the “highest”. Everyone is approaching the divine each in their own way according to their own understanding and predispositions. And so every approach is valid as just another way to reach and express the Ineffable Reality which is non other than non-dual Consciousness reposing in Her innate bliss endowed with the ecstatic powers of willing, knowing and doing, joyously projecting Herself outward into manifestation in each and every moment. As the Tantrik master Prabodha once said: “There is nothing so high that I can conceive that you have not transcended nor is there anything so low that you have not permeated completely!” So in the name of embracing both highest and lowest, in this lecture, we will be discussing “the dark side of Tantra”. Yep. Cremation ground rituals, spirit possession, fierce blood drinking goddesses etc. Enjoy! Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST. How does one coherently speak about the ineffable? Was Paul Tillich a religious naturalist? This week, I talk with the ever stupendous Jeff Speaks about metaphysics, apophaticism, the complexities of naturalist theology, and how to best characterize Tillich's theological lens. This is an especially relevant episode for any one who, like Jeff and myself, thirsts for a philosophically informed spiritual framework but rejects supernaturalism. Jeff Speaks is a PhD Candidate at Boston University School of Theology studying theology, philosophy, and ethics.
In this episode, Joe and guest co-host Erica Rex interview Elizabeth Anglin: spirit medium, animal communicator, intuitive healer, alien abductee, and author of Experience: Memoirs of an Abducted Childhood. She talks about her early abduction experiences, the time when she and her father realized they were both being abducted at the same time (from different locations), and the horrifying experience of six beings entering her apartment and realizing she knew one of them. These experiences led her to Budd Hopkins, and eventually John Mack (who did regression work with her) and the John E. Mack Institute, where she became a peer mentor for abductees. She talks about the validity of alien abductions, the concept of spiritual ecology, and the importance of listening to people: There's so much we don't know, so is it fair to label experiencers as schizophrenic just because we can't replicate the experience? She discusses: The commonality of people from the same family being abducted and why some people are lifetime abductees while others are only taken once The differences in abductions and how some seem to only be mental while others are physical and extremely painful The story of Linda Napolitano and the famous Brooklyn Bridge abduction Regressive hypnotherapy work: Are the memories you're recovering accurate? Quantum biology, the Penrose-Hameroff quantum theory of consciousness, parallel realities, time travel, and quantum jumping and so much more! As the X-Files made famous: The truth is out there. And this episode is definitely pretty out there! Click here to head to the show notes page.

In this episode, we unravel the nature of God as a transcendent being of light whose very essence is mirrored in the marvels of our physical realm. Through an insightful exploration of how the properties and capabilities of physical light- manifested in the intricate workings of fiber optic networks and emerging technologies like quantum computing- reflect the omniscient and omnipotent nature of God's light, this episode aims to bridge the chasm between physical light and the ineffable mystery of who God is, suggesting that in the very structure of our temporal world lies hidden a blueprint which alludes to the limitless capacities of God.Visit us on the web at theancienttradition.com for more amazing comparative religion.

An episode interesting from every point of view, we train our eyes on Jorge Luis Borges' “The Aleph.” The first segment wins the kudos of the learned, the academician, the Hellenist, as we talk about the favorite things we saw this year. The second segment — baroque? decadent? the purified and fanatical cult of form? — dives into the philosophy, comedy, satire, and poignancy of this classic story. Once again, we show our awareness that truly modern podcasting demands the balm of laughter, of scherzo. The finicky will want to excommunicate our discussion without benefit of clergy but the critic of more manly tastes will embrace this episode as he does his very life. Every once in a while, JF and Phil like to do a “song swap.” Each picks a song, and the ensuing conversation locates linkages and correspondences where none was previously thought to exist. In this episode, they are joined by the music scholar Meredith Michael – Weird Studies assistant, and co-host of Cosmophonia, a podcast about music and outer space – to discuss songs by Lili Boulanger, Vienna Teng, and Iron & Wine. Ineffable, invisible, inscrutable--angels are enduring creatures across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and human experiences of the divine as mediated by spiritual emissaries are an aspect of almost every religious tradition. In popular culture, angels are often reduced to the most gauzy, sentimental, and saccharine of images: fat babies with wings and guardians with robes, halos, and harps. By contrast, in scripture whenever one of the heavenly choirs appears before a prophet or patriarch, they first declare "Fear not!" for terror would be the most appropriate initial reaction to these otherworldly beings. Angels are often not what we'd expect, but it's precisely in that transcendent encounter that something of the strangeness of existence can be conveyed. Elysium: A Visual History of Angelology (Cernunnos, 2023) is a follow-up volume to Pandemonium: A Visual History of Demonology, and like the earlier title, this book offers an account of the angelic hierarchies as they've been understood across centuries and cultures and of the individual personages, such as the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Uriel, who have marked the mythology of the West. Ed Simon is the Executive Director of Belt Media Collaborative and the Editor-in-Chief for Belt Magazine and an emeritus staff writer at The Millions, which the New York Times has called the “indispensable literary site.” Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Today's guest is Kevin Killeen whose new monograph, The Unknowable in Early Modern Thought: Natural Philosophy and the Poetics of the Ineffable, has just been published by Stanford University Press. This monograph gathers together a range of early modern sources including the mystic Jacob Boehme, the poet and radical John Milton, the writer and royalist Margaret Cavendish, and the prophet Anna Trapnel. Taken together, these chapter offer a vibrant picture of literary culture's engagements (sometimes critical, sometimes appreciative) of that which can't quite be understood by the mind, language, or theology. Kevin Killeen is Professor of English at the University of York. His previous books are the monograph, The Political Bible in Early Modern England (Cambridge University Press, 2017), and the Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Early Modern England, c. 1530-1700 (2015), co-edited with Helen Smith and Rachel Judith Willie. Kevin also is the editor of the journal Renaissance Studies. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies. "Solaris" by Stanislaw Lem follows a crew of scientists trying to understand an utterly alien intelligence--a planet covered by an ocean of (apparently?) conscious goop. How can we communicate with something truly, truly foreign to our evolution and understanding? How can we even confirm it's "intelligent"? John Krikorian returns to discuss.
