Sextile is an electro-punk duo based in Los Angeles. They're newest record, Yes, Please is due out May 2 and is their sophomore release on Sacred Bones. On Yes, Please, founding members Melissa Scaduto and Brady Keehn offer up their most realized and personal record yet, all with an overflowing trifecta of visceral, frenetic and heady energy.  Melissa and Brady share their musical backstory, how Brady found music in his disciplined upbringing and why Mellissa initially resisted dance music. We get the origin story of Sextile and how they made their first record on a $250 budget in sober living situation.  We learn why Yes, Please has more emphasis on lyrics the previous records and why Mellissa is nervous about a particular song. The duo share their writing and recording processes on Yes, Please, how they adapt to the current touring climate and why Nick Zinner operated as their front of house engineer for a split second. Joe, Brady and Mellissa discuss the delights of Japan and we hear a couple new tunes. SEXTILE SACRD BONES Please visit and support Izotope and Distrokid for continued exclusive listener discounts. Khanate and their new record were one of the biggest surprises in 2023, simply dropping their fifth full-length without any official hints, promotion or anything on May 19. Everyone's feed was dominated by the news and everyone automatically went ahead to listen to it. The record has now had time to settle in and people were able to dive into To Be Cruel and as we are sure that there are still things that need clarification and explanation! Hence we were happy to get together with drummer Tim Wyskida to talk about the record and loads of things related to it! Khanate is a supergroup consisting of band members with myriads of merits in their respective biography and a long history of releasing great stuff on famous labels. To Be Cruel is now released via Sacred Bones and fits perfectly into their body of work even though it might be a bit more “classical” in a specific way, as the way the band works is surely not by jamming all together but putting layer upon layer. The record is mesmerizing and haunting at the same time and always awe-inducing. We talked with drummer demon Tim Wyskida about all of that and much more. Enjoy the interview! Welcome back to another episode of Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, so glad to have you with us. A major inspiration for us in the podcast zone is media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, host of the Team Human podcast. As our digital age gets stranger, more fractured, and harder to parse, we find his humanist, consciousness-centered approach very helpful. One of the things he's known for saying is “Look for the others”—the others who grok your worldview, whose enthusiasms and obsessions mirror your own. And no doubt about it, our guest this week, Andy Zax, feels very much like one of the others. Zax is a lifelong music devotee, and he's worked on pretty much every side of the music business, writing copy and liner notes, producing records, working with labels like Rhino, and generally helping to shine a light on figures like Judee Sill, David Axelrod, Talking Heads, and many more. In 2019, he oversaw the massive Woodstock 50th anniversary project, restoring virtually all the audio associated with the historic concert. For Zax, all of this is something of a holy calling, and its led him to discoveries in unexpected places, like when he found an unreleased recording by electronic pioneer Mort Garson—known these days for the hippest ever music for plants to grow by LP Plantasia—nested in the archive of spoken word artist Rod McKuen. And not just any recording: we're talking “Journey to the Moon,” music Garson composed for the live CBS News broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. That recording sees release this week via Sacred Bones' Journey To the Moon and Beyond, released on Friday, July 21. Over the course of his long chat, we riff on the value of archived music, music streaming and music technology, audio quality, the merits of keeping your records unorganized, the haunting quality of Leonard Nimoy's late ‘60s studio albums, and much more.  Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast network, check out Talkhouse for more great reading and listening. Next week on Transmissions? 20-year-old Navajo singer/songwriter Hataałii joins us to discuss his label debut and what music has meant to him growing up. Until then, this Transmission is concluded.  For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Nika Danilova began recording under the moniker Zola Jesus while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She drew textures from industrial music and harsh noise (alongside operatic vocals) to create a sound that shaped the cultural moment. It also helped define the popular indie label Sacred Bones. This year brings her sixth full-length album Arkhon. This conversation was previously recorded in June. Intro music from Ted Byrnes' Words Have Two Meanings (Foul Prey). Zola Jesus - The Fall - from the 2022 album Arkhon on Sacred Bones. Zola Jesus returns with her sixth full-length later this month titled Arkhon. The artist, whose real name is Nika Roza Danilova, explains that the title translates to "power" or "ruler" in ancient Greek. "Arkons are a Gnostic idea of power wielded through a flawed god," Danilova elaborated via a press release. "They taint and tarnish humanity, keeping them corrupted instead of letting them find their harmonious selves. I do feel like we are living in an arkhonic time; these negative influences are weighing extremely heavy on all of us. We're in a time of arkhons. There's power in naming that."  Today's Song of the Day taps into that power. "I wrote ‘The Fall' for myself," she said. "It was an exercise in using music as a tool for the sake of my own inner catharsis. I had a lot of turmoil and complicated emotions that I couldn't process in any other way. I suppose some feelings require you to write a pop song in order to fully understand them. For that reason, this song is very precious to me." Liz Lamere and Jared Artuad join us this week on Aquarium Drunkard's weekly talk show podcast Transmissions to discuss the life, work, and creative philosophies of the late Alan Vega. As one-half of Suicide, alongside his partner Martin Rev, Vega blazed a trail of provocative, synth-driven art rock that was often too punk for the punks. From there, his solo career found him making forays into pop music with producer Ric Ocasek, painting, and constantly creating, rarely working on any terms other than his own.

Constant Smiles - "Run to Stay" from the 2021 album Paragons on Sacred Bones. Since 2009, Constant Smiles have been churning out roughly an album a year, amassing a pretty enormous discography that's now 15 records deep. Led by Ben Jones, the band is more of a collective, with more than 50 members providing contributions over the past 13 years. While Constant Smiles have tried out a number of varying sounds over the years, their latest release sees the collective join the Sacred Bones family for a 13-track record of dynamic indie rock titled Paragons. Our Song of the Day is the album's lead single “Run to Stay,” a mid-tempo strummer with a shimmering, wistful tone. “‘Run To Stay' is about not being present in the moment, and struggling with antisocial tendencies,” explains Jones. “Like when you're at a party or talking to someone but you're only half paying attention to what they're saying because you can't stop thinking about other things you need to do. Or when you avoid hanging out with friends because you want to work on music or something, but nothing comes to you so you just end up sitting around all day.” The song comes with a video self-directed by the band that sees its members traveling separately, in various modes of transportation. Says Jones of the video, “We were trying to capture that anxious feeling of always needing to be somewhere or be doing something else but realizing that it isn't ever that important.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SPELLLING - "Boys at School" from the 2021 album The Turning Wheel on Sacred Bones. Bay Area-based artist Chrystia Cabral, who records as SPELLLING, returns with her third full-length, The Turning Wheel, out June 25th via Sacred Bones. In a press release, she details that the album has “themes of human unity, the future, divine love, and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life.”  Today's Song of the Day is a dramatic seven-minute-long piano-led ballad, with Cabral reflecting on the early stages of her life. She explains that the track “steps back into my younger self, my teenage self to voice my angst, desires and disillusionments. I knew when I created the main motif on the piano that it was striking something really raw and both delicate and fierce. The notes just immediately transported me to the era of my youth, of this time when you are really beginning to confront the mirror of yourself to the outside world.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Music is never incidental in a movie made by our guest this week: director, collage artist, and music maker Jim Jarmusch. Music is part of his films’ DNA, a through line running through his characters’ black comedy gags and existential wanderings. There’s no stylistic template—everything from crazed blues to ambient drones have soundtracked Jarmusch’s films—but the director ties songs together with an unmatched patience and style. The soundtrack to one of those motion pictures—2014’s vampire yarn Only Lovers Left Alive—was recently reissued by Sacred Bones. It features Jim’s band, SQÜRL, his frequent collaborator lutenist Jozef Van Wissem, and guest appearances by Madeline Follin of Cults, Zola Jesus, and Yasmine Hamdan. Jim joined us from his place in upstate New York to discuss the pastoralism that defines his creative practice these days, his early days, collaborators like John Lurie and Steve Buscemi, and of course music—Neil Young, Tom Waits, Iggy, Wu-Tang Clan, and beyond.

Among the many things we'd been looking forward to in the year of 2021 was the release of Lost Themes III: Alive After Death, the third collection of John Carpenter's original, non-soundtrack musical compositions. And, now that it's here, we can safely say -- and Chris DOES say so, more than once -- that this album is an absolute banger! We got to hear a lot of these tracks when they were released as singles last year, but your humble hosts and Carpenter aficionados think this album is best enjoyed in its entirety. Nick and Chris do another track-by-track review and commentary of this Sacred Bones Records release, and along the way, we imagine the cinematic visions this music might inspire, consider the locked-in groove that Carpenter and his band (son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies) have established over several albums, and even figure out the correct pronunciation of Moog! Plus, Chris braves the brutal world of Australian horror filmmaker Greg McLean, Nick has a bloody good time with an Italian slasher-movie classic, and we celebrate another one of our favorite cinematic composers, Trent Reznor.

Molchat Doma - "Discoteque" from the 2020 album Monument on Sacred Bones. Belarusian trio Molchat Doma (a phrase that translates to “Houses Are Silent”) formed in 2017, crafting darkwave synth-pop from their hometown of Minsk. Their just-released third full-length Monument was written and recorded in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, but with today's featured track "Discotheque", they invite the listener to imagine the now-forbidden dance floor. In a press release, they describe the song as “a light dance composition, which was created in order to make the listener move to the beat of the music. A kind of answer to 'Just Can’t Get Enough' by Depeche Mode…Ideal for both mood elevation and unbridled fun.” The accompanying music video, directed by Alexey Terehoff, was filmed at the Memorial Museum-Studio of Z. Azgur, and while the clip finds the band performing to statues of Lenin and Stalin, Terehoff aimed to focus on the aesthetic. “This is the city that embalmed and revived all the idols from the era of the Soviet dictatorship,” he declared. “There are no politics in the video, only the STYLE, a mixture of pure, concentrated neo-totalitarian aesthetics and acidic post-punk.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hilary Woods released one of the beguiling releases of 2018 with Colt, out on the acclaimed Sacred Bones label. It's a lovely record, one that slowly furls itself around you. Ahead of playing Quarter Block Party in Cork City, which runs February 8-10, 2019, Hilary talked to Eoghan about how the album was recorded, turning from bedroom recordings to being mixed by James Kelly (Wife) to their challenging subject matters and why the time felt right to release it. She also discusses her journey, going from playing bass in JJ72 to finding her voice as a solo artist and how a support slot across Europe with Low came about.

Hey folks, welcome to the last Random Old Records podcast of 2018! EPISODE #71 jumps wildly from genre to genre, equally divided between music for dancing and dreaming.Colemine Records out of Loveland, Ohio has been modestly releasing the best vintage-sounding soul music all year long. The beginning of this episode highlights tracks by Ben Pirani and Wesley Bright and the Honeytones along with some rare '60s and '70s soul stompers. It moves on to more classic sounds from recent compilations, including garage rock from The Collectors and sunshine pop from The Carnival Connection, then back to the present day with jangle from The Weather Station and The Stroppies, bionic synth grooves from Vive La Void and Klaus Johann Grobe, plus a whole lot more!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. This month, I felt a sudden shock of inspiration and this podcast seemed to appear instantly out of thin air! EPISODE #70 of Random Old Records started like many past ones have, with a song that I couldn't get out of my head.In this case, it was the first track off the classic 1997 album by The Promise Ring, Nothing Feels Good. "Is This Thing On?" lit a spark in me that led to a set of incredible late '90s post-hardcore emo-punk-pop from Jets To Brazil, Superchunk, and others. From there, the episode flows into a bunch of recent jams from One Eleven Heavy, Shannon and the Clams, Exploded View, Mountain Movers, Dreamend, and so much more. If you like raw post-punk, rootsy guitars, and/or dreamy drones, there's something for you here, plus you'll get wild excerpts from the 1960 sci-fi classic Amazing Transparent Man!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. I tried coming up with some kind of theme to EPISODE #65 of Random Old Records, but had the hardest time. 18 out of the 20 tracks included here feature a female vocalist, but it's not any kind of feminist statement. It jumps across genres. There's punk and reggae but not at the same time. There's great love songs, great rage songs, and a couple where I have no idea what they are about. It's music for singing and swaying and dancing. The early-going is dominated by British music from the late 80s, thanks to the incredible recent C87 and C88 box sets from Cherry Red that document those years in UK indie history. There's been so many great CD-only releases lately that I have started buying them regularly again. You'll also hear  new tracks from second-generation reggae rocker Hollie Cook, NYC poppers The Shacks, and Canadian no-wave dynamos Ruby Karinto. Their self-titled debut LP on HoZac is an early frontrunner for album of the year!Loveland, Ohio's own Colemine Records is also highlighted, via a track from their February reissue of Gloria Barnes' rare deep-soul classic Uptown, and a recent moody soul cut from The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, NY. The episode then finishes up with some new and old post-punk bashers from Aquarium, Grass Widow, Pill, the World, and so much more!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. Check out an hour's worth of jams that are hand-picked by a real person, not an algorithm!Starting off with some classic romantic tunes from Carl Carlton and the Chi-Lites, the episode moves through more love-themed soul classics and a few recent highlights from the Stones Throw label, then drops in some tense indie jangle from The Popguns and brooding rock from Northern Kentucky masters The Light Wires before finishing up with a stack of new post-punk and goth atmospheres. Hey, folks!! Another month has gone by, and now here's a brand new episode of Random Old Records Podcast to (possibly) bring some joy to your life and (hopefully) break up the monotony. This time around, it starts off with a run of classic country and country-rock, including the maddeningly catchy "Mare, Take Me Home" by Wildweeds, and the acoustic beauty of "She's My Girl" by UK rockers Help Yourself. Then, there's a detour into the amazing new Numero Group compilation Cosmic American Music for a track by private press journeyman Allan Wachs, which is bursting with spooky highway Seger vibes.Elsewhere, you will hear tough-edged power pop from Mama and Mother's Children, a track from the underrated last Warm Soda LP, and a set of blazing old and new hardcore from around the US. On the tour is Cincinnati's own Everyday Objects, Rüz from St. Louis, Stuck Pigs from DC, and Poison Idea from Portland. Finally, you get a set of goth-pop including three of the best vocalists in rock n' roll today: Hether Fortune of Wax Idols, Jess Poplawski of Survival, and Haley Morris of Pleasure Leftists. You can download the episode HERE. Random Old Records Podcast is back from its summer vacation! Not gonna try to make up any crazy excuses, the truth is that I was running low on inspiration after 3+ years of blogging and doing a monthly podcast, and decided to put it to rest for awhile instead of cranking 'em out just to keep the streak going.Considering that it was four months in the making, EPISODE #43 of Random Old Records is a one hour MONSTER of fresh rock n' roll for your ears. It starts out with some ugly, noisy jams from Puffy Areolas and the K-Holes and crucial new punk rock from White Lung and Dikes Of Holland, hits the best tracks from the latest releases by The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and highlights some psych pop newcomers like The Marble Vanity and Jacco Gardner. This edition hits all the bases from the noisiest free-form freakouts to tight power pop and everything in between. It's simply a collection of the best shit I've heard all year, and I hope you all have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together. Let's all have fun together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Hey folks, it's that time again! Random Old Records Podcast EPISODE #29 is out NOW! Yes sir or madam, get ready for a solid hour of new and old rock n' roll, punk, garage, soul, psych, and raw n' REAL shouts from the bottom of the gutter. Kicking things off on #29 is a track from the LP I've been spinning the most in the last few months, the latest and greatest from Ottawa's White Wires! "I Can Tell" is a classic, slow-building power pop punk rawk jam, and the rest of the record is more of the amazing same. After that, you'll hear a track off the long-awaited new 7" from Florida's Garbo's Daughter, the triumphant return of Denton, TX's all star punks High Tension Wires, up-and-coming Richmond trash rockers Sports Bar, the dreamy new Vivian Girls side projects La Sera and The Babies, and a bunch of spankin' NEW bangers from the likes of Charlie and The Skunks, Dead Ghosts, Hornet Leg, Smith Westerns, Wheels On Fire, Trent Fox and the  Tenants, Caroline and the Treats, and WHEW, a whole lot MORE! This is one of the best episodes I've cranked out in recent months, so download it, rock out, and tell all your friends.I guess the most exciting new news this month is that Random Old Records Podcast is now iTunes OFFICIAL! Yep, I broke down and threw my credit card number Apple's way and went legit. You can now search for Random Old Records in the iTunes store and subscribe directly. Neat, huh? I'm not normally into comps but a few standouts have been released over the last few weeks. First up is the all femme-psyche comp My Estrogeneration on Not Not Fun, featuring blog mainstays Zola Jesus, US Girls, Valet, Pocahaunted, Tickley Feather, and Inca Ore, and a bunch of relative newcomers who haven't released much (or anything) or have been under most listeners radars--HNY, Topaz Rags and Talk Normal (feat. Blevin Blectum and Sumara Lubelski). Despite the wide range of vibrations picked up here, from the industrial hymns of Zola Jesus to the floating web of of HNY to the cavernous psych secretions of Topaz Rags, this comp flows easily from each track to the next. Highly recommended stuff, all of which is exclusive to this LP. Speaking of femme mystique, my ears were recently perked up by the Minneapolis via LA duo Tropic Of Cancer and their sadly out of print 10" EP, The Dull Age. Two tracks of dark 'n hypnotic chant-filled drones, most reminiscent of pre-dubbed-out Pocahaunted, and maybe with a sprinkling of Portishead. Camella Lobo, lead enchantress of the duo, has an excellent blog worth a regular peep here. Back on to the subject of comps, Secret Seven has just released an LP of unreleased tracks by various San Franciscan bands. Regular readers of this here blog will no doubt be familiar with The Fresh & Onlys, The Sandwitches, Sonny & The Sunsets, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall and Grass Widow, but there are plenty of tracks from newer or lesser known acts. A track by new band Exrays is the biggest surprise, which initially came off a little like a Tim Cohen (also featured on the comp) song. After a little research (and bugging Secret Seven for answers), I found that The Exrays are a new band lead by Ray's Vast Basement's Jon Bernson. According to his Wikipedia page we can expect an Exrays full length soon, and it'll feature contributions by--surprise, surprise!--The Fresh & Onlys' Tim Cohen. After a little more reading it looks like the two are also in a group called Window Twins, who released an LP in 2008 on Broken Twilight. This is all news to me, but looks like AQ is carrying this one. Anyways, In A Cloud is limited to 500 copies, so if yr a fan of any of the above I highly recommend tracking this one down.Sweet Rot has started the year off correct with 2 new 7 inches and their first full length LP. After two years of releasing a coupla satisfyin' 7 inches on labels like Severed Hands and Hozac, a 10 incher on Kill Shaman and a handful of cassettes, Richmond, Virginia's Nerve City finally get down to a full length release (pictured at top of the post), and it was well worth the wait. Comprised of recordings from 2007-2008, this collection is a varied, yet cohesive, batch of lurch 'n stomp-style rock reminiscent of early Velvets, dark 'n twangy surf rippers, and some rougher garage blues numbers. Fans of past Sweet Rot releases, particularly the now classic Meth Teeth 7 inch, oughta be lining up for this one asap. Absolute highest recommendation. Watch out for future NC releases on Sacred Bones, a split 7 inch with Flight on Needless and a split cassette with Florida's Tee Pee.Sweet Rot also launched two new 7 inches in the same week. Over the last few years Metz, France has been bustling over with releases by Anals, A.H. Kraken and Feeling Of Love, the latter of which drop this overdriven and infectious 7 inch and simultaneously release an LP on Kill Shaman. Not sure how a city of 125, 000 manages to come up with three exciting garage and punk bands, but if they keep pumping out high quality releases, I'll keep buyin´.Alabama's Amber Alerts whip up three tracks of lo-fi drum machine-driven synth punk with nicely placed low end bass grooves, which makes a bit of sense considering they share members with the like-minded Wizzard Sleeve. Though I wasn't quite as juiced on the recent Wizzard Sleeve LP on Hozac, it appears as if I can rest easy knowing the Amber Alerts are pickin' up the slack.Vancouver's own Von Bingen quietly released an LP late last year, and I was finally able to track down this ironically difficult to find record. Featuring Josh Stevenson (aka Magneticring, ex-Jackie-O-Motherfucker and Pink Mountaintops member, and head of the always-amazing FM Shades blog), Daniel and Jennie Pace Presnell (Feed and Seed Records), and Richard Smith, Von Bingen do some serious time traveling (backwards and forwards), visiting the ghosts of Kluster, Suicide and probably a bunch of them oddball records regularly seen on FM Shades. Walls of dense motorik kosmiche are explored here with the lead taken by some vintage synths that I'm not even gonna pretend I know anything about. You can track this one down at fine online retailers like Mimarogalu, Volcanic Tongue and Eclipse. Damn good company to be keeping. You can also buy this at their sporadic live appearances here in our fair city. Well worth tracking down.Olde English Spelling Bee dropped three LP re-issues of some recent "classic" cassette releases. Most notably is the released last year tape by Matrix Metals, which garnered many favorable reviews online, including Tinymixtapes ("the perfect soundtrack to the shittiest summer of your life") and Rose Quartz ("neo-primitive retro-futuristic FUN that oozes out of these claps and plastic beats), where it made it to number 1 on their best of '09 cassette list. I played it on the show several times and always got a positive, yet head scratching, response (fellow DJ Luke Meat said it "sounded like we had tuned into an alien pirate radio rave station"). All in all, pretty damn good responses for initially being limited to 100 copies. Check this recent video taken from the cassette/LP releaseMATRIX METALS "FLAMINGO BREEZE, PART 4" from OESB // FUTURE SOUND on Vimeo.Other reissues include a classic by James Ferraro (Skaters, Lamborghini Crystal, Vodka Soap) and a blinked-and-you-missed-it cassette from the mysterious Outer Limits Collective, who count Sam Meringue (aka Matrix Metals) as a member. All three are worth the dough and should be readily available at many of the above mentioned suppliers. In other local action, ETMS faves solars have released another fine cassette, this time issued on the newly launched Vacant Tapes label, run by the head of the always amazing Scrapyard Forecast and the metal and drone manipulator known as Empress. First release, though numbered as the second release on the label (when is that first one coming out??), is a lengthy, side-long synth and guitar drone-out. It never really blasts off, but leaves the listener gripping in dread.
