Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on singer and songwriter Ora Cogan.Ora Cogan's music pulls from folk, country, psychedelia, and gothic rock. She holds all of it without flinching, as heard on the fantastic album Hard Hearted Woman, her latest release on Sacred Bones.Ora has worked as a photojournalist and human rights advocate, and those experiences feed directly into how she thinks about art, resistance, and what the music is actually for. "Not just about crowns and glitter and farting unicorns"This episode is a dark conversation for the dark half of the year. The witches sit down with Iberian Shamaness, Priestess, and author Ness Bosch to talk about her work, her book Sacred Bones, Magic Bones, and the deep magick of inner work and symbolic sacrifice. Living in Scotland and teaching internationally, Ness brings a grounded and ancient perspective to the conversation.Together, they explore powerful mythic figures like Persephone, Inanna, Cailleach, and Ariadne; goddesses who carry wounds and wisdom, and who show us how to walk willingly into the shadows of transformation. This episode is full of the intensity of the season. The three witches discuss the themes of sacrifice, symbolic death, and of letting go to make room for something new when the light returns.Prepare to be challenged, comforted, and called inward as Ness shares insights on spiritual death, ancestral healing, and the fierce power of dark goddesses, even when wounded. It's an episode about finding sacredness in surrender, and magic in the bones we carry.National Sexual Assault Hotline Text HOPE to 64673 to get support directly on your device. As stated at numerous points in this episode, a lot of the things discussed here can be found in the documentary Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus. We urge you to go check out that film here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/qlazzarus as it is a brilliant piece of work. For long time pod fans, this episode could technically be classed as part of our unsong series. But the reality is that the story of Q Lazzarus is so interesting, that it simply bursts out of the constraints of that format. Q Lazzarus/Diane Luckey, is best known for the song "Goodbye Horses", a track that you've almost certainly heard at some point in your life. It's most notable use was in the Jonathan Demme classic Silence of the Lambs, but it has been used in a bunch of films since then, and covered by an array of artists. It is, in fact, that only "official" release by Q Lazzarus. She would later go on to appear in Demme's next film, the wonderful Philadelphia, singing a cover of Roxy Music's classic tune "Heaven". After that, though, she would simply vanish from the industry entirely. So what happened? Why did this seemingly promising up and coming artist, who had two huge brushes with fame, suddenly disappear without trace? Well, it's a rather complicated, and compelling, story that touches on industry discrimination, artist exploitation, and the music business's treatment of unique talents. This week we dive into that story, with the help of a remarkable documentary film called Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus - a film that came about through an almost impossibly serendipitous encounter between filmmaker Eva Aridjis Fuentes and her mysterious subject. The documentary is available on Vimeo and you should absolutely check it out for yourself, alongside the Sacred Bones compilation of her previously unreleased works. Please note that this story deals with some heavy themes and doesn't have the resolution we might hope for, but it's an important and deeply affecting tale that deserves to be told. "There's a lack of continuity for FLINTA* individuals." The Chilean artist talks about trans rights and the launch of her new sex party, ABOV. What would genuine visibility, safety and solidarity look like for the trans community? This week's interview with Chilean artist Dominga Huidobro (AKA Föllakzoid) explores this topic in depth. Huidobro began her transition eight years ago. By then, Föllakzoid had already put out a number of releases on Sacred Bones. She's since gone on to totally reinvent the psych rock genre, working with hypnotic loops and percussion, and even crossing over into the world of techno with collaborations and remixes from Atom TM and DJ Nobu. Huidobro opens up about how transitioning changed her artistic identity, and even fed directly into her standout album, V. But it also began to pose problems in her personal life. She was attacked at a queer party in Berlin last September, an incident that reflected an ongoing lack of safety and care for the trans community. Touring as a solo artist, she is still rarely provided safe, pre-arranged transportation to and from venues, and the constant trauma of crossing borders and being left to fend for herself in threatening situations led her to pause her live shows for the rest of this year. In the meantime, Huidobro has started a FLINTA* party, ABOV, with her partner Ariana Paoletti (AKA Volvox). The two end the conversation with a meditation on what the FLINTA* mission means in 2025. Sextile is an electro-punk duo based in Los Angeles. They're newest record, Yes, Please is due out May 2 and is their sophomore release on Sacred Bones. On Yes, Please, founding members Melissa Scaduto and Brady Keehn offer up their most realized and personal record yet, all with an overflowing trifecta of visceral, frenetic and heady energy. Melissa and Brady share their musical backstory, how Brady found music in his disciplined upbringing and why Mellissa initially resisted dance music. We get the origin story of Sextile and how they made their first record on a $250 budget in sober living situation. We learn why Yes, Please has more emphasis on lyrics the previous records and why Mellissa is nervous about a particular song. The duo share their writing and recording processes on Yes, Please, how they adapt to the current touring climate and why Nick Zinner operated as their front of house engineer for a split second. Joe, Brady and Mellissa discuss the delights of Japan and we hear a couple new tunes. SEXTILE SACRD BONES Please visit and support Izotope and Distrokid for continued exclusive listener discounts. Maria BC is a singer, songwriter and ambient musician based in Oakland, Ca. Growing up in a musical household, Maria was encouraged to sing and is grateful for the 10 years of vocal training they enjoyed throughout their childhood. Since 2020, Maria has self-recorded and released two well received records and the third, Spike Field (out now on Sacred Bones) is a sprawling and spacious ambient journey laced with broad reverberations, dark folk guitar, synthesizers and choral stacking. Maria shares the idea behind Spike Field and how our battles with past and future selves relate to the field of nuclear semiotics. Joe and Maria discuss the meaning behind the song Watcher and what motivates them to take an outward reaching position in song writing. They share their perfectionist style of recording, why Oakland is the best city in the world, and we hear a couple tunes. Khanate and their new record were one of the biggest surprises in 2023, simply dropping their fifth full-length without any official hints, promotion or anything on May 19. Everyone's feed was dominated by the news and everyone automatically went ahead to listen to it. The record has now had time to settle in and people were able to dive into To Be Cruel and as we are sure that there are still things that need clarification and explanation! Hence we were happy to get together with drummer Tim Wyskida to talk about the record and loads of things related to it! Khanate is a supergroup consisting of band members with myriads of merits in their respective biography and a long history of releasing great stuff on famous labels. To Be Cruel is now released via Sacred Bones and fits perfectly into their body of work even though it might be a bit more “classical” in a specific way, as the way the band works is surely not by jamming all together but putting layer upon layer. The record is mesmerizing and haunting at the same time and always awe-inducing. We talked with drummer demon Tim Wyskida about all of that and much more. Enjoy the interview! Welcome back to another episode of Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, so glad to have you with us. A major inspiration for us in the podcast zone is media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, host of the Team Human podcast. As our digital age gets stranger, more fractured, and harder to parse, we find his humanist, consciousness-centered approach very helpful. One of the things he's known for saying is “Look for the others”—the others who grok your worldview, whose enthusiasms and obsessions mirror your own. And no doubt about it, our guest this week, Andy Zax, feels very much like one of the others. Zax is a lifelong music devotee, and he's worked on pretty much every side of the music business, writing copy and liner notes, producing records, working with labels like Rhino, and generally helping to shine a light on figures like Judee Sill, David Axelrod, Talking Heads, and many more. In 2019, he oversaw the massive Woodstock 50th anniversary project, restoring virtually all the audio associated with the historic concert. For Zax, all of this is something of a holy calling, and its led him to discoveries in unexpected places, like when he found an unreleased recording by electronic pioneer Mort Garson—known these days for the hippest ever music for plants to grow by LP Plantasia—nested in the archive of spoken word artist Rod McKuen. And not just any recording: we're talking “Journey to the Moon,” music Garson composed for the live CBS News broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. That recording sees release this week via Sacred Bones' Journey To the Moon and Beyond, released on Friday, July 21. Over the course of his long chat, we riff on the value of archived music, music streaming and music technology, audio quality, the merits of keeping your records unorganized, the haunting quality of Leonard Nimoy's late ‘60s studio albums, and much more. Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast network, check out Talkhouse for more great reading and listening. Next week on Transmissions? 20-year-old Navajo singer/songwriter Hataałii joins us to discuss his label debut and what music has meant to him growing up. Until then, this Transmission is concluded. Klip: YouTube, Sacred Bones, New Line Cinema

Nika Danilova began recording under the moniker Zola Jesus while attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She drew textures from industrial music and harsh noise (alongside operatic vocals) to create a sound that shaped the cultural moment. It also helped define the popular indie label Sacred Bones. This year brings her sixth full-length album Arkhon. This conversation was previously recorded in June. Intro music from Ted Byrnes' Words Have Two Meanings (Foul Prey). Outro music - Lost (Sacred Bones).
Zola Jesus - The Fall - from the 2022 album Arkhon on Sacred Bones. Zola Jesus returns with her sixth full-length later this month titled Arkhon. The artist, whose real name is Nika Roza Danilova, explains that the title translates to "power" or "ruler" in ancient Greek. "Arkons are a Gnostic idea of power wielded through a flawed god," Danilova elaborated via a press release. "They taint and tarnish humanity, keeping them corrupted instead of letting them find their harmonious selves. I do feel like we are living in an arkhonic time; these negative influences are weighing extremely heavy on all of us. We're in a time of arkhons. There's power in naming that." Today's Song of the Day taps into that power. "I wrote ‘The Fall' for myself," she said. "It was an exercise in using music as a tool for the sake of my own inner catharsis. I had a lot of turmoil and complicated emotions that I couldn't process in any other way. I suppose some feelings require you to write a pop song in order to fully understand them. For that reason, this song is very precious to me." Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liz Lamere and Jared Artuad join us this week on Aquarium Drunkard's weekly talk show podcast Transmissions to discuss the life, work, and creative philosophies of the late Alan Vega. As one-half of Suicide, alongside his partner Martin Rev, Vega blazed a trail of provocative, synth-driven art rock that was often too punk for the punks. From there, his solo career found him making forays into pop music with producer Ric Ocasek, painting, and constantly creating, rarely working on any terms other than his own. For this program, his widow and creative partner Lamere and collaborator Artaud join host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss the Vega Vault, a vast trove of unreleased material that's yielded posthumous releases like It and Mutator on the Sacred Bones label, Surrender, a new career spanning Suicide comp, and Liz Lamere's Keep It Alive, out May 20 on In the Red Records.
